North of England win the Vets Area Championships

Scotland's veteran women's golfers lost their two-year grip on the Miller Stirling Trophy on the final day of the Veteran Ladies Golfing Association's area championship at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk.
After drawing their matches on the first two days, the Scots, skippered by Pat Hutton, needed to beat England South and hope that Midlands and North drew the other match.
It was not to be. South edged a 5-4 win over the Scots and North beat Midlands 8-1 to take the title.
"I couldn't have asked for a bigger effort from my team but I think they were just drained by their efforts in the European senior women's team championship last week. I don't think they had anything left to give in the final session," said Mrs Hutton.
The Scots won the morning foursomes 2 1/2-1/2 against South but lost the singles 4 1/2-1 1/2. Only Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) managed a 2 and 1 win while Heather Anderson (Downfield) secured a square game.

Helen Faulds wins her match against North of England

Defending champions Scotland showed a lot of grit and determination to salvage a 4 ½-4 ½ draw with England North on the opening day of the Veteran Ladies Golf Association inter-area golf team championship at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk today.

Skipper Pat Hutton's team trailed by 2pt at lunchtime after taking only half-a-point from the three games but they came storming back into the picture in the six singles.

Victories by Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose), Helen Faulds (Douglas Park), Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) enabled the rallying Scots to take the singles 4-2 and cancel out their morning deficit.

"It was a good performance to get a draw from the position we were in," said Pat Hutton.

Incidentally, the England North line-up included former Scottish women's amateur champion and international team captain Fiona Anderson who has been based on Merseyside for a number of years.

Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), partnering Lorna Bennett, had a hole in one at the 17th in their foursome against Hilary Smythe and Elaine Elliot.

It was the third ace of Noreen's golfing career. It squared the match but Noreen and Lorna lost the 18th to go down by one hole.

In the other match in the four-cornered contest, England Midlands beat England South 5 ½-3 ½.

Scotland play the Midlands tomorrow.

Megan Briggs and Pamela Pretswell play in the International Matches in Wales

Scotland will be hoping for a successful defence of the Stroyan Cup, awarded to the winning team in the Girls’ Home International Matches, when the series is played at Southerndown which starts tomorrow 8th August 2007

In lifting the trophy last year at Portstewart for the first time in eight years, Scotland broke England’s domination that gave them the series eight times in ten years.

Now, with a side that includes Carly Booth, the newly crowned European Young Masters Champion and 16-year old Sally Watson who qualified for and played 72 holes in the Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship, the Scots have their sights set firmly on retaining the trophy.

Pat Hutton skippers the Scots for the last time

Pat Hutton skippers Scotland for the last time in the Veteran Ladies Golf Association jamboree at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk over the next three days.
"We are defending the Miller Stirling Trophy and I am hoping to bow out on a successful note," said Pat, pictured right, who was a very successful Lanark and county team player in her day and, more recently, chairman of the SLGA.
The Scots open their campaign with a match against England North tomorrow.
The two other teams in the four-cornered, all-play-all contest are England South and England Midlands.
The Northern Division provide two of the squad of eight - Heather Anderson (Downfield) and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) - Midlands two, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) and Fiona De Vries (St Rule).
East have three representatives in the line-up - Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), Moira Thomson (North Berwick) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton).

D&A WIN WEST DIVISION TITLE

D&A --- CLICK TO ENLARGE
Posted by Picasa
Dunbartonshire & Argyll, who have not won the Scottish title since 1997, have joined the other divisional champions, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries-shire and Midlothian, in the Scottish women’s county golf finals at Tulliallan Golf Club from August 31 to September 2.
They won the West Division women’s team championship – at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club today, clinching the title with a 7-2 win over Ayrshire while Lanarkshire were beating the defending champions, Renfrewshire, 5-4.
D&A started the three-day programme by drawing with Lanarkshire but they won their next two matches, beating Renfrewshire on Tuesday, to finish with 2 1/2pt out of three.
Lanarkshire were runners-up with 1 1/2pt while Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire both finished with one point.
Ayrshire resisted the D&A victory roll in the morning foursomes which were shared but it was one-way traffic in the afternoon singles. Kylie Walker, Judy Galbraith, Jill Meldrum, Anne Laing and Sara Bishop won for D&A and Gemma Webster halved the other tie.
Three times Scottish champion Anne Laing was D&A’s top performer with 4 1/2pt out of six, closely followed by Sara Bishop with 4pt out of five.
But the players who gained the most points over the three days were teenager Megan Briggs and Claire-Marie Carlton, both of Renfrewshire. Megan won six out of six ties, while Claire-Marie had 5pt out of six to her credit.

Day 2 Results from the West Inter County Matches

Dunbartonshire & Argyll moved into a marginal lead in the West Division inter-county team golf championship table at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club today.
After a draw with Lanarkshire on Monday, D&A dented the 100 per cent record of title-holders Renfrewshire by beating them 5-4.
In the other match, Ayrshire beat Lanarkshire 5-4 which all but ends the latter’s hopes of going forward as divisional champions to the Scottish county finals at Tulliallan Golf Club at the end of next month.
D&A lead with 1 1/2pt (one win, one draw) from Renfrewshire and Ayrshire 1pt (one win each) and Lanarkshire 1/2pt (one draw).
In Wednesday’s final programme, D&A play Ayrshire and a win would secure them the title.
Renfrewshire looked well on their way to a second win when they led D&A 2-1 after the foursomes and then took the top two singles through Megan Briggs and Claire-Marie Carlton.
But D&A won the last four singles for a notable come-from-behind victory through Sara Bishop, Anne Laing, Gemma Webster and Kylie Walker.
Ayrshire led Lanarkshire 2-1 after the foursomes and then won the top two singles through Lesley Hendry and Debbie Watt. Catherine Malcolm got Ayrshire’s clinching point.
