Nominations are now open for the Scottish Golf Club and Volunteer of the Year awards which celebrate those who have gone above and beyond to make a difference over the past year.

Four finalists, plus their guests, in each category will be invited to attend the 2017 Scottish Golf Awards where the winners will be presented with their accolade on stage. The Club of the Year will also receive a grant of £1,500 to support a future club project or local initiatives.

Scottish Golf Handicap Seminars

To help your club gain a better understanding of the Unified Handicapping System (UHS), Scottish Golf are running a number of Handicapping Seminars across Scotland.

The two-hour regional seminars are free of charge and are open to Match and Handicap Convenors from any affiliated golf club (Places subject to demand).

 The two hour seminars will be dedicated to providing a generic overview on the CONGU Unified Handicapping System and will also look at a number of changes introduced in 2016 and how they affect your club.

Workshop topics include: Club Handicaps; 9-Hole Qualifying Competitions and Supplementary Scores; Alteration of Handicaps; Multi-Tee Competitions; and Initial Handicap Allocation.

Lanarkshire's Lesley Lloyd is awarded Honorary Membership

Lesley Lloyd was awarded Honorary Membership of Lanarkshire Ladies' County Golf Association last night at their AGM.

 This is well deserved for the outstanding contribution she has made to county golf over many years serving as Junior Secretary, Treasurer, Captain, Champion, caddy and then team member continuosly for the past 24 years.

 She has also brought honour to the county through representing Scotland in Senior European Team Championships and Home Internationals.

Disabled golfers approve new indoor facility in Ayrshire.

Disabled golfers from across Scotland will attend the Studio Golf facility in Stevenston Ayrshire, for a day-long training session at their new indoor centre, with local PGA Golf Professional, David Rushbury, on Monday 21 November.

International players, heading off soon to the Portuguese Disabled Open, will be in attendance, along with beginners and novices to the game, for some tuition from owner and resident Pro David Rushbury.

Chic Brodie, formerMSP and supporter of disabled golfers, along with his son who is a Professional Golf Coach, will also attend the event to help out with tuition and support for Scottish Disability Golf.

James Gales MBE, who is the Secretary and Founder of the Scottish Disability Golf charity said, “this is a wonderful opportunity for some of our members to get some much needed winter practice. We have an extensive golf diary throughout the traditional golfing season, but like most players, we cannot get a great deal of practice throughout the colder months. The new Studio Golf facility looks great and we can get some tuition and fun practice on the simulator, playing some prestigious golf courses, while relaxing with a coffee”.

Some of those attending will be heading off at the end of the month for the final European Disabled Golf Championship event of the year, at the Villa Sol Resort in Portugal. The event, for the European Order of Merit Rankings will host over forty of the best disabled golfers from across Europe for the coveted title.

David Rushbury began his career in golf at Troon Municipal Courses for 3 years before fully qualifying as a Professional in 1982. Since then he has worked and taught in the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Spain and various other European locations, before opening the 3000-square foot facility in Stevenston last year.

46 ladies attended the AGM of the West Division's SLVGA which was held at Cowglen GC this afternoon - Thursday, November 3rd 2016.

Captain Marion Stewart gave a full review of a successful season for the West Vets. 
She then handed over the Captain's roll to June Lockhart and the new Vice Captain is Chris Fowler (pictured above)

Aileen Wilson and Heather Anderson were awarded Honorary Membership of the West Vets and were presented with their Honorary membership certificates. Both Heather and Aileen were delighted and both gave entertaining replies.

Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association held their 107th AGM last night at Haggs Castle Golf Club. Captain Gillian Kyle gave her annual report of the years events and was pleased to announce the various successes at girls, ladies and senior level.
Audrey Sturgess from Scottish Golf gave an excellent overview of the difficulties and challenges that have been faced since the SLGA / SGU amalgamation.
Renfrewshire's Maureen Mitchell from Old Ranfurly up dated and explained the needs of Course Rating and that Scottish Golf, is seeking willing volunteers to join their team of national golf Course Rating -- Read more at  Scottish Golf - Course Rating
Secretary Carol McNally was pleased to announce that the 2017 County Championship would be held at what was formerly an all male club - Pollok Golf Club in Glasgow.

The evening was rounded up with the presentation of trophies by RLCGA president Jennifer Mack

County Champion Eilidh Briggs gave the vote of thanks after a very informative and enjoyable AGM.

Lorna McClymont - Milngavie (County Champion) Fiona Rattray - Douglas Park (Junior Champion) and Jillian Farrell - Cardross were amongst the prize winners.

The Royal British Legion is urging golf clubs to fly a poppy pin flag on the 16th hole as part of its Somme 100 commemorations

The Royal British Legion’s ‘Fly the Flag’ initiative is part of a nationwide campaign, ‘Sport Remembers the Somme 1916-2016’, which is calling on sporting organisations, associations, clubs, teams and individuals to commemorate the role played by sportsmen on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Scottish Golf 2017 National Championships

Scottish Golf has announced a number of changes to its national championships following a comprehensive review, with several to come into effect from the start of next season.

The governing body has engaged with players, clubs and other stakeholders to help shape the changes, helping to provide a better platform for the nation’s amateur golfers to perform on while showcasing some of the country’s outstanding courses.

The most significant developments concerns changes to the formats and timing of the major national match play championships, while the Scottish Youths Championship will be removed from the schedule, with the category no longer complimenting the national structure or international amateur calendar.

In line with a number of other countries, the Scottish Boys and Men’s Amateur Championships will change from straight knock-out to 36-hole stroke play qualifying, with the leading 64 players (and ties) reaching the match play stages. The Scottish Boys Championship also moves from its traditional April slot into the school summer holidays, to be played for the first time alongside the Scottish Girls Championship, running concurrently on two neighbouring courses, with Scotscraig and Drumoig named as the 2017 host venues. The boys’ field size will reduce to 180, with the girls at 64.

The Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship will be held at Royal Aberdeen (6 – 10 June) for the first time since former Solheim Cup star Janice Moodie won the event there 25 years ago, while Royal Troon’s Old Course will continue to host the prestigious Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open Stroke Play Championship accompanied by the Troon Portland course.

Also in Ayrshire, Prestwick will be joined by Prestwick St Cuthbert in hosting the stroke play qualifying for the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship (31 July – 5 Aug) and Western Gailes welcomes the leading male amateurs for the Carrick Neill Scottish Stroke Play Championship in early June.

Like their match play equivalents, the Scottish Boys and Girls Stroke Play Championships will be played on the same dates, moving to the Spring (Easter) holiday slot of 10 - 12 April next year, with Monifieth welcoming the boys and Montrose staging the girls.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S KYLIE WALKER QUALIFIES AT STAGE 2 LPGA TOUR Q SCHOOL

Three Scots - Kylie Walker, Gemma Dryburgh and Sally Watson finished in the leading 80 and ties at the LPGA Tour Q School Stage 2 event over four rounds at Venice, Florida on Sunday.
They advance to the Final Q SChool at LPGA International, Daytona Beach, Florida, from November 30 to December 4.

Jennifer Rankine loses in play off for Scottish Junior Champion of Champions

Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazelhead) and Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) tied with two-over-par 73s. in the Junior Champion of Champions at the Duke's Course St Andrews yesterday.
Jasmine  birdied the first, 14th and 18th in halves of 37-36. Jennifer birdied the 14th and 17th but bogeyed the eighth, ninth, 10th and 18th in halves of 38-35.
Three players tied for third place on 74 - Louise Duncan (West Kilbride), Kirsten Brown (Strathaven) and Joanne Free (Gullane).

WEST KILBRIDE PAIR MAKE IT TO THE SEMI FINALS OF THE DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

Many congratulations go to West Kilbride's Catherine Garett and Helen Cattanach on reaching the Semi Finals of the 2016 Daily Mail Foursomes where they were beaten by Grangemouth Golf Club.

Congratulations also go to Scotland's Grangemouth's Janice Bridgeman and Fiona Lawless for battling through the last 16 teams at St. Pierre Golf & Country Club.

Janice and Fiona made there way through the rounds beating Thornhill, Ashburnham and West Kilbride and were finally beaten by Bromborough in the final 3&2.

Connie Jaffrey wins in North Carolina

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Third-year Kansas State University student Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, took home the Greenville Regional Preview individual title on Tuesday as she led the Kansas State women’s golf team to a third-place finish at the par-72, 6,122-yard Brook Valley Country Club.
Jaffrey, a former Scottish U18 girls champion, with rounds of 71,75 and 73 for an aggregate of three-over-par 219, earned the second individual win of her US college golf career and the 13th individual title in K-State women's golf history. The Wildcats shot a 50-over par 914 for the tournament, finishing one shot back of Augusta for second place and 19 behind team title winners Texas Christian University.
“Connie played exceptionally well on a very difficult course,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “I am very proud of her and this entire team. A top-three finish in this field is great.”

68 ladies representing 25 of the 28 Golf Clubs in the West of Scotland Greenlees teams attended the  2016 Greenlees Trophy presentation and lunch at Cathkin Braes Golf Club today.

Cathkin Braes Lady Captain Joyce Mullin ---- and Greenlees Secretary Anne Dunn presided over the event at which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Results coordinator on the Web Carol Fell and Cathkin Braes Greenlees Secretary Pauline Wardlaw were also at the top table.

After an excellent lunch and lots of chat Anne Dunn said a few words --

"Once again it is my privilege to welcome you to the Greenlees Presentation Lunch.
The Weather this year, until near the end, was kind to us and the matches were finished on time. It is lovely to see new, and old, names on the trophies and the leagues for next year look interesting I say this as a spectator."

"Going up to the First Division for the first time is always difficult, as Cathcart Castle will tell you but, as I am sure they will also tell you, it was enjoyable. "

"I wish Old Ranfurly and Largs all the very best for next year. I also wish to welcome Prestwick St Nicholas and Cardross back into the Second Division – all the best to you. "
"I wish to thank all the Secretaries for all their hard work and for sending in their results in so quickly. Also to Carol Fell for putting all the details on the web, which allows everybody to keep up to date."

She then asked Cathkin Braes Lady Captain Joyce Mullin to present the trophies.

CONNIE JAFFREY SHARES LEAD IN NORTH CAROLINA

Connie Jaffrey, (Troon Ladies) former Scottish U18 girls champion from Kilwinning, was joint leader at the Greenville Regional Preview women's college tournament at Brook Valley Country Club in North Carolina after an openign round of one-under-par 71 over a 6,133yd course.
She shared the lead at the head of a field of 92 players with Jessica Spicer (Virginia Tech).
Curtis Cup player Alice Hewson from Berkhamsted, a stdent at Clemson University, was T6 with a 76.
Chloe Weir (Kansas State) from Belfast had an 80.
Jessica Carty (Denver), also from Northern Ireland, and Rachel Walker (Old Dominion), from Dumfries, had 81s.
Sophie Newlove (Denver), from Nottingham, had an 8

TROON'S HAZEL MACGARVIE WINS THE 2016 GIRLS MERIT AWARD

Scottish Golf’s Orders of Merit have been finalised with Hannah McCook, Hazel MacGarvie and Sheena Wood winning the respective womens', girls and senior domestic titles for 2016.

Troon’s Hazel MacGarvie has won the 2016 girls’ merit award  with 902 points from four events, ahead of Jasmine Mackintosh from Hazlehead on 834, and Gullane’s Joanne Free on 759 who pipped Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) by one point.

She said: “I am delighted to win the Girls’ Order of Merit especially since I didn't play in many counting events. I think this season has been successful. I really just wanted to do the best I could bearing in mind I was sitting my Highers, my last one not being until the beginning of June.”

The 17 year-old’s season included winning all six of her matches at the Home Internationals, and she even squared a match with Thomas Pieters in practice ahead of the Open Championship. But it was her victory in the weather-disrupted Scottish Girls Amateur Championship which was key in topping the girls’ Order.

“I was really pleased to win the Scottish Girls, particularly finishing on three under and then going onto win with an eagle at the par four first. Next year I just want to continue to improve my game.”

Gillian Paton wins Champion of Champions and Kilmacolm's Eilidh Briggs is the runner up

Angus women's champion Gillian Paton (Royal Montrose) finished four strokes clear at the top of a field of 13 in the Scottish women's champion of champions' tournament over 18 holes at Glasgow Gailes Golf Club today.

Mrs Paton had contrasting halves of three-over 39 and Sree-under 32 for a par round of 71.

She bogeyed the fourth, fifth and seventh before birdieing the 10th, 17th and 18th.

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) was runner-up with a 75 (37-38) and Joanne Free (Gullane) third with a 76 (39-37).
