Sally Watson was the leading Scot in the first round of the British Amateur Championship played Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire today. Ex member of Ranfurly Castle Lauren Mackin now based in Majorca was only 2 off the pace closely followed by Lanarkshire's Pamela Pretswell from Bothwell Castle.

The West of Scotland Junior Inter County Matches for the Kennedy Salver was played today in very pleasant weather at Cawder Golf Club. The girls from the four counties mixed well and enjoyed their day.
The winner with 6 1/2 points was Renfrewshire, second with 5 1/2 points was Ayrshire ,third with 4 1/2 points was Dunbarton & Argyll and Lanarkshire with 1 1/2 points was fourth.

Pamela Pretswell returns from the Curtis Cup and does a bit of " Caddying"

Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) has just returned from the Curtis Cup in the USA and she came to Kilmacolm Golf Club yesterday to help out her Lanarkshire County Team mates by Caddying for Fiona Norris in their final Inter County Team Match against Ayrshire. SLGA'S Isabel Crawford introduces the match and congratulates Pamela on her achievements

RENFREWSHIRE ARE THE WEST DIVISION CHAMPIONS

Renfrewshire retained the West Division women's inter-county team championship at Kilmacolm Golf Club today. They completed their programme with a 100 per cent record by beating Dunbartonshire and Argyll 7-2. Earlier in the week Renfrewshire had beaten Ayrshire 6 1/2-2 1/2 and Lanarkshire 7-2.
Three Renfrewshire players won six out of six games over the three days - Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) and Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze).
The other match today resulted in a draw between Ayrshire and Lanarkshire.
Renfrewshire are the first of the divisional champions to qualify for the Scottish county finals at Bothwell Castle from September 17 to 19.

The 36th Curtis Cup --- Final Result USA 12.5 -- GB&I 7.5

The GB&I Team

The 36th biennial competition between teams of eight amateur female golfers from the United States and Great Britian and Ireland was held at Essex County Club. The Americans have now won a seven-match winning streak and won it 27 times.

Essex County Club also happens to be the home course of sisters Harriot and Margaret Curtis, who established the competition in 1932. The competition was also held at the club in 1938.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Pitreavie’s Louise Kenney remains on course to retain the Scottish Ladies’ Golf Association’s Order of Merit, while Abernethy teenager Hannah McCook is the early leader in the race for the girls’ title.
After six counting tournaments, Kenney, beaten finalist in the Scottish championship at Craigielaw last month, remains in pole position on the women's list with 2,280 points. Laura Murray (Alford) is in second place with 1,880.
Jane Turner (Craigielaw) is third with 1,515, while the biggest mover is Mortonhall’s Rachael Watton. She finished second in the Munross Trophy to overtake Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar). Rachael has 1,371 points with Kelsey on 1,285.
After the opening two events In the girls’ Order of Merit, 16-year-old Hannah, who finished second in the Paul Lawrie Scottish Schools’ Championship at Murrayshall earlier this week, is the early leader with 470 points.
Alyson McKechin (Ederslie) is a close second on 440 with Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Lesley Atkins (Gullane) in the next two spots on 420 and 408 respectively.
The next women's event to count for SLGA Order of Merit points is the British Amateur Championship at Ganton from June 22-26. Points are allocated for both the stroke-play qualifying and the match-play knock-out – while the girls’ will be chasing points at the Janice Moodie Trophy at Windyhill on July 2.

Former tennis prospect Pretswell set to serve GB&I in Curtis Cup

PAMELA Pretswell played tennis as a junior for Scotland and once took part in a demonstration with the Great Britain junior team on Number One court at Wimbledon. Yet, as the grass court season gets into full swing this week at Queen's Club and Birmingham, the 21-year-old from Hamilton will have a golf club in her hands when she enjoys the highlight of her sporting life to date.

One of two Scots in the Great Britain & Ireland team taking on the Americans in the 36th Curtis Cup, a three-day match that starts tomorrow at Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, Pretswell turned to golf just seven years ago a
ADVERTISEMENT fter tennis had threatened to take over her life, and she is adamant that she made the right decision.

Studying business and management, she's a year away from securing an honours degree at Glasgow University and has no regrets that the coaching sessions she once took part in under the watchful eye of Judy Murray, Andy's mum, haven't paved the way for that career highlight to come instead at SW19, Roland Garros, Melbourne Park or Flushing Meadow.

"Judy Murray used to take us to tournaments and was also involved in Scottish training squads," recalled Pretswell. "Andy and his brother (Jamie] were around at the time and I always remember they had a good work ethic, something I've tried to follow myself. I played for Scotland and the Great Britain junior team but I stopped playing because I was too busy with the tennis and, within a few weeks, I had started to play golf."

A member at Bothwell Castle, where she plays off plus three, Pretswell was surprised by the high standard she encountered in golf when making her first appearance in the Scottish Girls' Championship. However, she took just four years to break into the Scotland team and, helped by a win in the 2008 Swiss Open Amateur Championship, secured her first GB&I cap in last year's Vagliano Trophy against the Continent of Europe.

Having also finished third in the St Rule Trophy and fourth in the European Individual Championship, as well as reaching the last 16 of the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship, Mary McKenna, the GB&I captain, and her fellow selectors didn't mind too much that Pretswell was unable to play in some of the bigger events earlier this year due to university work, finding a place for her in the eight-strong side along with Sally Watson of Elie & Earlsferry Ladies.

"I've never played in America, so it should be good – a nice challenge," said Pretswell. "We know the Americans are good but we also have to remember that we are good as well. Helped by the fact we've had a week's practice over here, I feel we can definitely win. We've got a good team and will certainly be giving it our best shot."

JULIE YANG SLASHES SEVEN STROKES OFF MURRAYSHALL RECORD IN SCHOOLS GOLF

Fourteen-year-old Loretto School, Musselburgh pupil Julie Yang lived up to her billing as a world golf star in the making with an incredible record-slashing round at Murrayshall, near Perth TODAY (Monday).
Competing in the Paul Lawrie Scottish schools golf championships, South Korean-born Julie returned a nine-under-par 64 over the Murrayshall No 1 course, SEVEN strokes better than the previous women’s course record of 71.
She required only 24 putts as she marked up one eagle (at the ninth), nine birdies (first, third, sixth, eighth, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th), and two bogeys (at the seventh and 10th).
“My putting has not been very good since I won the Welsh women’s open title last month but I think these Murrayshall greens were made for me. The speed of them was just perfect,” said Julie who did not have any putts at all at the 16th where she holed a 40ft chip from off the green. Her halves of 32 were five under for the outward journey and four under for the inward half.
Yet the so talented youngster did not get back home from finishing joint fifth in the Irish women’s open amateur stroke-play championship at Dublin at the weekend until midnight on Sunday night and was on the tee at Murrayshall just a few hours later at 8am Monday morning.
Julie had a par-matching round of 69 over the shorter Lynedoch course to give her a nine-under-par total of 133.
“I like Scotland and the golf courses – but not the weather,” said Julie who was transferred from her previous Phoenix, Arizona base to Loretto School by her parents last September so that she could gain valuable experience of European conditions courses with a view to becoming a tour professional as soon as she completes her education.
Although Yang will not be able to play for the Scotland girls team during her four years at Loretto, she is eligible to play for the Scottish schools against the English schools in the annual international at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire in September.
She won the Paul Lawrie Scottish schoolgirls title at the first attempt by 12 shots from Hannah McCook (Highland) who had rounds of 75 and 70 for 145.
Alyson McKechin pipped her Renfrewshire team-mate and county champion Eilidh Briggs for third place. Eilidh had a definite edge with a first-round 70 over the shorter course but she drifted to an 80 over Murrayshall for 150 to finish fourth. Alyson, with a morning 77 and a second-round 71, slipped past into third place on 148.

In the team event only two girls were required to make up a team in their category and Julie Yang and Lesley Atkins, both pupils at Loretto School’s Golf Academy and representing East Lothian schools, won that trophy by 14 shots from runners-up Renfrewshire Alyson McKechin and Eilidh Briggs.
Forth Valley’s Tiffiny Wood and Nicola Robertson finished third.
The girls’ section also had a Paul Lawrie Salver handicap prize for the best net 36-hole aggregate. It was won by Tegan Seivwright (Aberdeen City) with a net total of 134 (65-69) off 11 of a handicap.
Second was Natasha Qayum (Renfrewshire) on 137 (63-74) off seven.
Hannah Scott (City of Aberdeen) came third, after a countback, with 138 (69-69) off seven.
The Scottish schools team of 12 boys and six girls for the match against the English schools at Fairhaven on Monday, September 13 will be finalised by the Scottish Schools Golf Association once they know who is available for selection and who is not. It is roughly based on the leading finishers in the championship at Murrayshall.

West won the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association inter-area girls’ team championship after a tense finish to the two-day contest at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club, Monifieth today.
All four teams went into the final matches on level terms, each having won once and lost once. In the decisive games, North beat East 2-1 and West beat South 2-1. That meant that North and West were level at the top of the final table with two wins a piece.
The tie-breaker was the number of individual games won and West (+20) came out on top over North (+9) in this.

Renfrewshire County Champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) pipped another of Scotland’s up and coming youngsters, Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) to win the Munross Trophy women’s 36-hole tournament – an SLGA Order of Merit event – by a single shot over the Montrose Links today (Sunday).

Eilidh had two rounds of 75 for a total of 150.
Rachael was the first-round leader with a 73 but slipped back to a 78 second time round for 151.
Ashley Smith (Monifieth) was third on 156 (80-76) with last year’s winner, Ann Ramsay (Kirriemuir), joint fourth on 157 with scores of 78 and 79.

KYLIE WALKER MAKES HER FIRST CUT ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR

England’s Florentyna Parker earned her first Ladies European Tour victory at the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in Holland.
The German-born 20-year-old, who celebrates her 21st birthday in exactly two weeks’ time, carded a final round of two under par 70 at Golfclub Broekpolder in Rotterdam on Sunday for a two stroke win over Scotland’s Krystle Caithness (68).

Mary McKenna’s Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team scored a 6-2 victory today (Friday) over a men’s select team from Longmeadow Country Club, Massachusetts where the team have been practising this week before they can switch to the match venue, Essex County Club, at the weekend.
The three-day Curtis Cup match against the United States starts on Friday, June 11.
All the games in the pracentice match were played to a finish over 18 holes. Great Britain and Ireland made a 4-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes but the Longmeadow select, playing a format more familiar to them, shared the afternoon four-balls 2-2.

Liz and Audrey win West Division Inter-County Foursomes

Liz Keohone and Audrey Thompson of Loudoun Gowf Club, Ayrshire won the West Division Inter-County Foursomes tournament at Ballochmyle Golf Club, Ayrshire today.
They had a round of five-over-par 76 and headed the scratch returns by two shots from Renfrewshire's Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) and Liz Stewart (Glenburn).
Lanarkshire's Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) and Fiona Scott (Bothwell Castle) were third with an 80.
In the Handicap section, the winners were Renfrewshire's Jackie MacDonald and Denise Cowan of Ranfurly Castle with a net 69.5 off a handicap of 13.5
Lanarkshire's Anne Lloyd (Hayston) and Pat Casey (Mount Ellen) (13) tied with Renfrewshire's Merope Dunlop and Maureen Taggart (Old Course Ranfurly) (14) on the net 70 mark. Anne and Pat were awarded second place with the better inward half.

Munross Trophy at Montrose - Late Entries Accepted

Late entries will be accepted for Sunday's Munross Trophy at Montrose

There's quality but not quantity so far in the field for Sunday's Munross Trophy 36-hole women's tournament over the Montrose Links. Once upon a time, this SLGA Order of Merit event attracted far more than 28 players, which is the current figure.
Late entries will be accepted. Contact the Montrose Golf Links Office on 01674 672 932. Entry fee is only £15. Handicap limit is 12.
