Linlithgow Pairing are the 2019 Ping Mixed Champions

Linlithgow duo Gill Scott and Alasdair Mackenzie were today crowned Scottish PING Mixed Champions at Gleneagles.

On a breezy day in Perth, 40 club pairings teed it up on The Queen’s Course, in the free-to-enter national event for club golfers.

For the second year in the row, the winning team’s round included a remarkable hole-in-one, this year from Scott on the par-3 17thhole.  Scott’s ace helped the Linlithgow pair to an impressive 44-point total.

Finishing in a tie for second place were Dennis and Ivy Donn from Musselburgh Golf Club, and Innes and Morag Cowie from Buckpool Golf Club who finished on 42 points.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after the victory, Linlithgow’s Gill Scott said, “It was a fabulous event to be a part of here at Gleneagles today, we had a really great day.” 

On carding her first hole-in-one ever, Scott added, ‘To get my first hole-in-one in a National Championship is absolutely amazing, I still can’t quite believe it. The wind was behind us and I just thought I am going to have to take my driver here and hit the ball, as we walked on to the green our playing partner gave me the thumbs up and said you have just got a hole-in-one which was quite surreal really, I am still shaking.” 

Following a successful day at Gleneagles, Scott’s playing partner Alasdair Mackenzie added,“Playing mixed golf is always a lot of fun, if you have a playing partner who has a lot of fun it makes such a difference and that it was mixed golf is all about. All in all, it was just a brilliant day out and to win it with Gill was really special.”

Solheim Putting Championship on August 25

The race is on to find Perthshire’s champion putter.

The finals of the 2019 Solheim Putting Championship will take place at Gleneagles on August 25, in advance of the Solheim Cup.

Finalists will pit their skills against each other and the undulations of the 18th green of the PGA Centenary Course.

 

Blairgowrie Golf Club, which is marking the 43rd anniversary of the celebrated Lansdowne championship course by offering rounds at £43 per head to visitors for the rest of the month, hosted their club qualifiers on Friday and Saturday, with categories for Women, Men and Children (under-14).

Mount Ellen Golf Club closes its doors.

Mount Ellen in Gartcosh is set to become the latest Scottish golf club to close its doors due to dwindling membership.

Founded in 1904, the shutters will be brought down at the Lanarkshire club on Sunday due to financial problems.

A club spokesman said: “Unfortunately, Mount Ellen Golf Club is closing its doors on Sunday.

“We’ve had the same problem as a number of golf clubs. Membership numbers have fallen over the years and it has come harder and harder.

“Basically, we are not bringing in enough money to cover our costs to be able to continue.

“In total, the membership was round about 300, but, out of that, we only had 196 paying full fees.

“We had seniors, juniors, associates and flexible memberships as well. If we had 300 full paying members, I think it would be a different story.”

Sandy Jones served on the Mount Ellen committee before becoming PGA in Scotland secretary then going on to serve as PGA chief executive at The Belfry.

Peter Lloyd, who was one of Jones’s successors in the PGA in Scotland post, was also a long-time member at the club.

“Listen, I am in the golf club today and it’s like being at a funeral,” added the spokesman. “The place is really busy and everybody is in a state of shock.

“It’s only 10 years since Paul Lawrie opened our new clubhouse. It has just happened so quickly and we are devastated, absolutely devastated.

“We’ve got a visiting party here on Sunday and, if the weather is good, I am sure members will be out for a game. But most of the members have already been up to clean out their lockers.”

The news comes hot on the heels of an announcement earlier this week that Camperdown in Dundee is set to be closed.

Earlier this year, Eastwood on the outskirts of Glasgow also went out of business while other Scottish clubs to close down over the past few years have included Carrick Knowe in Edinburgh and Brunston Castle in Ayrshire.

Slovenian Pia Babnik wins the British Girls Amateur Championship

Pia Babnik produced a commanding display of golf to defeat Isabella Holpfer and win the centenary R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship at Panmure today.

The 15-year-old Slovenian played impressively in blustery conditions throughout the 18-hole final to defeat Austria’s Holpfer, who was making her second consecutive appearance in the final after losing out to compatriot Emma Spitz at Ardglass last year.

This ladies tournament was first played in 1989 to complement the success of the Eden Tournament and attracts many lady golfers who compete in the same competition format as the men’s event.

The Strathtyrum Trophy, presented by the Cheape family, owners of the Strathtyrum Estate, is awarded to the scratch winner with the Strathtyrum Salver awarded to the handicap winner.

Wow what a week in St Andrews playing in the Strathtyrum Tournament. 

9 rounds of golf in 6 days 😳 in rain, sunshine, wind, nasty wet squawls (witness to somebody chasing their brolly across 2 fairways 😆😂), wind and rain 😭😫 then sun to finish 😎. 

Practice, qualifying rounds, into match play and a Final against good old local Edinburgh buddy Karen Marshall. Kaz was off to a hot start and the door never opened for me. 

She continued to show some bold accurate Kaz Marshall brilliant shots and beat me at 17 🏌️‍♀️⛳️🏆. 

Worthy and well deserved winner of the tournament in its 30th year. And I’m sure a very special year for all the Marshalls ❤️.

The Phoenix Cup is based on the Solheim/Ryder Cup internationals, is played over three days and includes the traditional match play formats of foursomes, fourball and singles competitions.

Last October, the SDGC selected a  European team and travelled to the USA, to take on their best disabled golfers, and much like the Ryder Cup in France just before, beat them over the Rotonda Course near Tampa, Florida, 13.5 to 10.5.  

Jim Gales, the event organiser and Captain of the European Team in Florida said, “The Phoenix Cup has been on a wee promotional tour of the country since we returned victorious from the US, and has been pictured with lots of politicians, representatives from the likes of Scottish Golf and numerous golf clubs around the country, so raising the profile of the sport for golfers with disabilities”.

The 25^th Anniversary Phoenix Cup in 2020 will be played at four venues, at Gleneagles Centenary, Panmure, Blairgowrie Rosemount and Carnoustie Championship Courses from 15 to 20 September and will be played between Europe & The USA.  The Scottish Captain Iain Ross of Kirriemuir will face Dan Aldrich from California over the week long festival of inclusive golf, with golfers qualifying from over a dozen countries.  

“The SDGC was the first fully inclusive disabled golf group in the world and created the Phoenix Cup to incorporate anyone of any age with any type of sensory, intellectual or physical disability.  To date, the Phoenix Cup has involved 693 golfers from 18 nations and has been staged in 6 countries, like the US, Canada, Scotland and Spain”.

The Girls’ Amateur Championship was first played in 1919 and celebrates its centenary this year. Four former Girls’ Amateur Champions were named in the European Solheim Cup team this week: Georgia Hall, Suzann Pettersen, Anna Nordqvist and Azahara Munoz.

The winner of this year’s championship will receive exemptions into Final Qualifying for the 2020 AIG Women's British Open, the Women’s Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.

Nearly a Hole in One !!

West Vet's  Fiona Armour with Brenda Conway (Renfrew) were playing in one of the matches against East Vets for the Asp Trophy.

Fiona said "It was at the14th at Cochrane Castle and it nailed the match for Brenda and I, 5 and 4.  

"Brenda had already hit a cracking tee shot to about 8ft from the pin at the par 3 9th and I slotted in the putt for our first 2 on the card."

All in all  West had a good day and won 4-1

Cardross Golf Club Open Day Results

Cardross Golf Club hosted their annual open day event earlier this month, with 120 ladies taking part in the trim am tournament.

The Winning Team is presented with the Harper Trophy

The Harper Trophy and first handicap prize was presented to the victorious trio of Margaret King (Helensburgh), Fiona Leitch (Dumbarton) and Margaret Stirling (Cardross) by Noreen Harper.

Milngavie Trios were second and third with Laura Robinson, Marion Mason and Sandy Sinclair followed by Mandy Allen, Davina Lavery and Christina Houston.

Hannah Darling qualifies for the R&A Girls Amateur Championship matchplay stages

Alessia Nobilio showed why she is the highest-ranked player in the field for the centenary R and A Girls’ Amateur Championship with a sterling performance at Panmure today to finish as the leading qualifier amond the 64 who go forward to the match-play stages.

Nobilio, who hails from Milan, compiled a six-under-par round of 65 to move to 11-under-par for the championship and secure her place in the last 64, one shot ahead of her nearest rival Lucie Malchirand from France.

Ranked sixth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Nobilio did not drop a shot in the two stroke-play rounds and four birdies in her opening six holes in benign conditions at the challenging Angus links this morning set her well on her way.

The winner of the Italian Ladies stroke-play championship and the Citta di Milano Trofeo Gianni Albertini as well as a member of the winning Continent of Europe Vagliano Team in June picked up further shots on the 10th and 11th to coast home.

Slovenia’s Pia Babnik, the Helen Holm Scottish women’s open champion, qualified comfortably with a three-under-par total of 139 following a one-over-par 72, two shots clear of Germany’s Christin Eisenbeiss.

Broomieknowe’s Hannah Darling qualified as the leading Scot on level par after a two-over-par 72. The two-time Scottish Girls’ Amateur Champion traded four birdies with six bogeys. She was the only Scottish make the cut. 

The cut fell at nine-over-par with former champions Emilie Paltrinieri and Lily May Humphries qualifying on three-over and seven-over respectively.

The qualifiers will each be looking to follow in the footsteps of the four past champions in this event who were named in the European Solheim Cup team this week: Georgia Hall, Suzann Pettersen, Anna Nordqvist and Azahara Munoz.

Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes including Saturday’s final. The winner will receive exemptions into the 2020 Womens Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the Augusta National Womens Amateur Championship.

Renfrew Golf Club Tri Am Success

Another very successful Ladies Open Tri-am took place yesterday at Renfrew Golf Club in largely dry and sunny conditions. A field of 37 teams took part in a bid to win the Burgoyne Thistle Trophy and the 'on course' prizes. 

As well as the opportunity to win some fantastic raffle prizes- the local Renfrew Branch of Enable Scotland Charity will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds - there was an extensive selection of ladies golf clothing, gifts and accessories offered for sale by Sarah and Tom Eckford. Never has the Committee Room looked so pretty 😜

A selection of photographs from the event are included in the album on the Renfrew Facebook Page and quite unusually the vast majority of the prize-winners stayed or in the case of the winners, came back for the presentation of prizes that was undertaken by Alice Burgoyne.

The competition was based on the best nett score at each hole but in the last three holes all three players nett scores counted and were added in.

Many congratulations to the winners of the Trophy, who only entered the day before the competition;

Hannah Darling in fourth place after 1st round at Panmure

Lucie Malchirand got off to a flying start in the 91^st staging of the British Girls' Amateur Championship at Panmure, near Carnoustie  today with a seven-under-par round of 64 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of stroke-play qualifying.
The 16-year-old from France turned in three-under and went on to notch eagles on the par-five 10th and 14th holes on her way to setting a new women’s course record at the renowned Angus links.

Malchirand, who is second in the Junior Solheim Cup rankings and has two wins already this year, said, “I’m feeling really good. It was the first day and it is a bit stressful but I’m really happy to shoot seven-under today.
"The course was really nice and I didn’t have any rain. I haven’t played well in my previous tournaments on links courses and this is the first time I have shot seven-under on a links course.”
Conditions varied throughout the day with periods of gusting winds, squally showers and calmer sunnier conditions. Scoring was strong among some of the later starters with Alessia Nobilio of Italy carding a five-under-par 66. Nobilio, the highest-ranked player in the field at sixth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, made her move on the front nine with four consecutive birdies from the 5th and parred her way in.
Pia Babnik, who won the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Championship earlier this year, is one shot further back after a four-under-par 67.

Hannah Darling leads home hopes
Scotland’s Hannah Darling, who won The R and A’s inaugural Girls Under-16 Amateur last year and the Scottish Girls Open Championship this year, sits fourth after a two-under-par 69.
Annabell Fuller from Roehampton is on one-under-par, a shot ahead of compatriot Euphemie Rhodes from Burnham and Berrow who is on the same mark as Isabella Holpfer from Austria, Katri Bakker from Finland, Christin Eisenbeiss from Germany and Sweden’s Louise Rydqvist.
Former champions Emilie Paltrieneri and Lily May Humphries struggled with rounds of three-over-par 74 and seven-over-par 78 respectively.

Players from as far afield as Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United States of America are competing with a strong contingent from Great Britain and Ireland and mainland Europe as the championship, founded in 1919, celebrates its centenary year.

Following tomorrow’s second round of stroke-play qualifying the leading 64 players and ties will progress to the match-play stage at the Angus venue. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes including Saturday’s final. 

The winner will receive exemptions into the 2020 Women Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.

Admission and parking are free of charge for spectators visiting Panmure.

GRACE CRAWFORD WINS THE SCOTTISH GIRLS’ U14 CHAMPIONSHIP

Grace Crawford is your new Scottish Girls’ U14 Champion winning the first playoff hole with an eagle 3

Sofia Barroso Sá and Grace Crawford were today crowned the winners at the Scottish Girls’ U16 & U14 Open Championship at Elgin Golf Club today. 

In the U14 section, it was Scot Grace Crawford from Gullane Golf Club who came out on top after a playoff with Kasumi Tran of Wales.

Crawford, who was part of the Scotland Girls’ Home International team just last week, reached the turn in three-under, level par overall, to close the overnight deficit and reach the top of the leaderboard going into the final nine.

After five straight pars to start the back-nine, Crawford took a two-shot lead into the final three holes over her playing partner Tran.

However, Tran birdied 16 and 17 to take a one-shot lead going down 18 but Crawford bounced back from a bogey at 16, birdieing the par-5 18th to force a playoff.

The players headed back down the 1st and it was Crawford who secured the victory with a stunning eagle three.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after picking up the U14 trophy, Crawford said, “I’m very excited to win. Coming down 18 I was just thinking make birdie and see what happens.

“When it’s a playoff it’s whoever wins, wins and thankfully this time it was me.

Douglas Park 40th Anniversary Family Foursomes Success Despite the Rain.

The Douglas Park Golf Club Family Foursomes was held yesterday despite the awful overhead conditions. It was open to every member in the club playing with ANY family relative (member or guest). The only pairing excluded were husbands and wives. Each player from their appropriate tee- Gents, Ladies or Juniors, in the format of foursomes scoring stableford points.

The range of ages of players were from under 10 to over ninety !!

The event was celebrating their 40th Anniversary set up by Colin Robertson who joined everyone back in the clubhouse after the games were finished.

There was much hilarity and fun inside the clubhouse with many families and children joining in and not too many being disappointed the "bouncy castle" was unable to be used !

The main prizewinners were presented with Centenary Glass Trophies that their photograph can be added into.

Megan Docherty is leading Scot in rain delayed U16 Scottish Girls Open Championship

After a three and a half hour delay due to the overnight and early morning rain, play was eventually able to get underway at 11.00am.

In the U16 event, it was Austria’s Anna Neumayer and England’s Leonie Muir who finished the day at the top of the leaderboard after level-par opening rounds of 74.

Neumayer’s opening round included four birdies and four bogeys while Muir carded five birdies alongside three bogeys and a double.

The pair will now take a one-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round.

Portugal’s Sofia Barroso Sa sits one shot back of the leaders on one-over par, largely thanks to a fantastic bogey-free back-nine with eight pars and a closing birdie at 18th.

The top-Scot in the U16 event is Bishopbriggs’ Megan Docherty who posted a two-over par round of 76 and will go into tomorrow’s final round just two shots back from the lead.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after her round, Docherty said, “I’m pretty happy with today’s round, I played well and holed some nice putts. We were lucky with the weather after this morning’s delay and only got caught in one shower which was good.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Docherty said, “It’s a nice position to be in. I’m just going to stay calm and try to play well and see what happens.”

In the U14 event, it was France’s Juliette Demeaux who posted the round of the day with an excellent one-under par 73.

Demeaux’s round included three birdies and two bogeys, and she will now take a two-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after her round, Demeaux said, “It feels very good. I was confident as I wanted to play well in Scotland.

“I’m feeling confident. I played well today without attacking too much and that will be the plan again tomorrow, just trying to keep making pars.”

Demeaux’s nearest competitor going into the final round will be Kasumi Tran from Wales who’s round of one-over par has her sitting in second place.

Top Scot in the U14 event after Day 1 is Gullane’s Grace Crawford. Fresh off of competing in last week’s Home Internationals, Crawford made a costly double-bogey at 17 before bouncing back with a birdie on 18 to leave herself just four shots behind the overnight lead.
