Rachel Mathieson beats ladies’ course record at Newburgh-on-Ythan to bag trip to Spain

Congratulations to 17 year old Rachel Mathieson (pictured above) from Hazelhead on breaking the ladies course record  at Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club last month as she won the Junior European Open Qualifying event. Her 2 under par 70 beat the old course record of 73 that had stood since 2003.

The previous ladies’ record holders were Ros Dunsmuir and Sheena Wood (both 2003), Donna Pocock (2008) and Lynda Carnie (2013).

The teenager is now set to fly out to the Alcaidesa Links Resort in Cadiz to play in the 28th Junior European Open 2020 Champions Week Finals in February.

The round earned Rachel a scratch six-shot success over Megan Docherty, of Bishopbriggs, and a net 66 off her handicap of four.

Newburgh captain Jonathan Dobson said: “We’re delighted to congratulate Rachel on her fantastic score. Our members have set some pretty high standards and it’s brilliant to see young players, like Rachel, raising the bar even higher.

“We’re also pleased to see her qualify and wish her the best of luck.

“It’s fantastic to see Scottish juniors competing in international events and I’m sure this will be an inspiration to other young north-east players.”

Scottish golfing couple go head-to-head in title battle at Loch Lomond

Bragging rights were on the line in the Henry household last weekend, when LET player Kylie Henry and husband Scott, a Challenge Tour card holder, went head-to-head in a title battle.

The final was played over 18 holes at Loch Lomond in the Big Johnsons Tour Matchplay, an event set up this year by John Henry, Scott's younger brother, to provide a playing opportunity for home-based pros in a Covid-hit season.

Kylie, a two-time LET winner, beat former Walker Cup player Michael Stewart at Mar Hall in her semi-final, while Scott defeated Sean Lawrie on his home patch at Portlethan.

The final was an exceedingly close affair with Scott winning at the 19th !!

Orla Rooney wins the Renfrewshire County Junior Championship

Orla Rooney

The Renfrewshire Junior County Championship Final between Orla Rooney [Cowglen] and Jennifer Lynagh [Caldwell] arranged with courtesy at Erskine Golf Club had a late rescheduling due to heavy rain overnight and the closure of Erskine today.

Both players coped well with the last minute change and the match was played at a very windy Kilmacolm Golf Club.

Lynagh and Orla on the course with Clair Barclay
Out on the Course

In difficult conditions the match
saw some impressive golf,Jennifer was 1 up after 6 and after battling the wind over the remaining holes in the front nine, Orla was 2 up and the match concluded at the 15th with Orla winning 4 & 3.

Thanks to RLCGA  Captain Sandra Littlejohn for referring the match and to all the girls who participated in the knockout stages.

SCOTTISH GOLF WHS WEBINAR IS A SELL OUT

From the
Scottish Golf Website

With just 24 days to go until the new World Handicap System (WHS) comes into play in Scotland, 500 golfers from across the country benefitted from Scottish Golf’s latest Zoom Panel Call.

Hosted by Scottish Golf’s Club Business Manager, Iain Evans, golfers from across Scotland had the opportunity to hear from, and pose questions to, Scottish Golf’s Handicapping and Course Rating Team of David Kernohan and Adam Phillips.

The call, which was available on a first-come, first-serve basis, was the first sell-out webinar hosted by Scottish Golf and is now available to view by CLICKING THIS LINK  or viewing on the video below

Scottish Golf has also produced an FAQ document to support golfer education and this can be accessed HERE

The slides from this Call can also be accessed HERE

David Kernohan, Handicapping and Course Rating at Scottish Golf said, “As we near the implementation of WHS in Scotland, we were delighted with the overwhelming response to this week’s call.

“We understand that golfer education is crucial over the next 12 months and we will continue to provide additional opportunities for golfers to learn more.

Following the huge demand for this week’s call, we are also looking at options to expand our Zoom Panel Call capacity to ensure more golfers can tune-in to these sessions live.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD HANDICAPPING SYSTEM - PODCAST

The World Handicap System and one of the biggest changes to the way we play the game in decades comes into force on November 2.

However, if you still don’t know your course rating from your slope, your hard cap from your playing conditions calculation, then -- David Kernohan who is the handicapping and course rating officer for Scottish Golf and is leading the way in implementing the new system in Scotland

He gives us a beginners’ guide to WHS and answers some of your questions too in this excellent podcast that was made.

COVID UPDATE BY SCOTTISH GOLF - 7TH OCTOBER 2020

Following the First Minister’s latest update in Parliament on Wednesday 7 October, Scottish Golf has been in dialogue with our partners at sportscotland and the Scottish Government to obtain further clarity about the new national restrictions being implemented across Scotland and how these might impact private member clubs.

On-course golf activities can continue under our current Phase 3 Guidance, with up to four players from four different households allowed to participate together. There are no changes to access to toilet facilities, locker rooms or professional shops which can continue to be utilised provided all appropriate measures, such as use of face masks, increased sanitation are adhered to.

The key changes that apply to all golf club, are the hospitality restrictions which apply to private members clubs across the country. These are summarised below and are effective from 6pm on Friday 9th October 2020:

  • Pubs and licensed cafes in five Scottish health board areas - Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire & Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley - must shut to all but takeaway customers

  • In other parts of Scotland not mentioned above, pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes can operate 6am to 6pm but cannot serve alcohol indoors during that time. These premises can sell alcohol outdoors until 10pm.

  • Rules on gatherings remain the same with a maximum of six people from two households permitted.

The changes announced vary across different regions of the country and we would encourage all clubs to familiarise themselves with the latest guidance and how it may impact their operations. These measures are in place for an initial 16-day period and will be reviewed thereafter by the Scottish Government.

Scottish Golf remains in dialogue with sportscotland and the Scottish Government to seek further clarification on the potential impact of restrictions on indoor activity for driving ranges and swing rooms. Further information will be provided as and when it is received from government.

We would like to thank all clubs and golfers across Scotland for your ongoing adherence to the latest guidance during these trying times. Scottish Golf will continue to keep all involved in the game updated via our dedicated COVID-19 webpage which can be accessed here.

Kind regards,
Karin Sharp, Chief Operating Office

Matthew ‘ absolutely thrilled’ to become an Honorary Member of the R&A

Catriona Matthew -  Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2009

By  GRAHAM BEAN
The Scotsman -26 Sep 2020

Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew has accepted an invitation to become an Honorary Member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

The Scot is one of four new honorary members, joining Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Nick Price. The quartet have won 11 major championships and are described by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club as “among the most successful and influential professional golfers of the modern era and... outstanding ambassadors for the sport”.

Matthew has achieved 11 professional victories in her career, with the pinnacle being her triumph at the Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2009 when she was also named Ladies European Tour player of the year.

The North Berwick golfer has represented the European Solheim Cup team on nine occasions and was a member of three winning teams. In 2019, she captained the European team to a memorable 14 ½ - 13 ½ victor y at Gleneagles and will skipper the side again next year when they take on the United States in Toledo, Ohio.

Matthew also enjoyed a hugely successful amateur career, representing Great Britain and Ireland and was in the Curtis Cup on three occasions and winning the Women’s Amateur Championship.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be made an Honorary Member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club and I feel very privileged to be joining such an illustrious group of Honorary Members who are such renowned figures in the game of golf.

“I was fortunate enough to be one of the first recipients of an R& A Scholarship at the University of Stirling and it gave me some fantastic opportunities to develop my career as a young golfer.

“The Club and the R& A do so much to grow the game and I’m hugely supportive of the work they are doing to support women’s golf and particularly the AIG Women’s Open.”

Scottish Golf latest Covid Updates - 23rd September

Following the First Minister’s latest update in Parliament on Tuesday 22 September, Scottish Golf has been in dialogue with our partners at sportscotland and the Scottish Government to obtain further clarity about the new national restrictions being implemented across Scotland.

Scottish Golf is now in a position to provide all Clubs with Updated Phase 3 Guidance for all Golf Clubs and Golfers.

The changes are summarised as follows and unless otherwise stated are effective immediately:

  • Any golf club/course which is accessed regularly by over 200 members or visitors, in a single day, must have in place a designated COVID officer and appropriate risk assessments. More detail is available in sportscotland’s Phase 3: Return to Sport and Physical Activity guidelines here.

  • For adults, a maximum of 30 people including coaches and officials can combine to essentially create a ‘competition bubble’ as long as physical distancing measures are maintained. Competition organisers should ensure that no two ‘bubbles’ come into contact with each other at any time throughout the day.

  • Caddy services may resume, providing all physical distancing and hygiene measures are adhered to. There are no restrictions on the number of households a caddy can have contact with per day but services should be limited to carrying of a bag, providing advice only and not passing golf clubs to the player.

  • Indoor and outdoor hospitality will be required to close at 10 pm from Friday 25 September onwards, this includes clubhouse facilities and beer gardens which may have been in operation.

  • Golfers from different households should travel separately.

Clubs should also note that additional funding has been allocated to local Environmental Health teams, allowing for greater capacity for inspections of businesses to enhance compliance and enforcement of current restrictions.

Once again, we would like to thank all of our clubs and gofers across Scotland for your continued co-operation and adherence to the current guidance during these challenging times. We will continue to keep all clubs and tournament organisers updated via our dedicated COVID-19 webpage which can be accessed here.

Kind regards,
Karin Sharp, Chief Operating Officer, Scottish Golf

World Handicap System 2020 – Transition Handicaps

CLICK HERE FOR A RULES OF HANDICAPPING PLAYERS REFERENCE GUIDE

WHS RULES OF HANDICAPPING

2020 – TRANSITION OF CONGU HANDICAPS  TO WHS HANDICAP INDEX

In order to move from CONGU to WHS handicaps on the 2nd November 2020 all players’ current Handicap Records will be reprocessed using the WHS principles. The calculation will identify the best 8 of the last 20 Qualifying Scores, if posted during the last 3 years in Scotland, and factor in:

  • The adjusted Gross Score (Score Differential)
  • The Course Rating
  • The Slope Rating of the tees played
Check Out the Players reference guide above

If a player has submitted less than 20 scores in the last 3 years, the calculation will be done in a similar manner to the method of allocating new handicaps, as shown below.

If less than 20 Qualifying Scores posted in the last 2 years

    • 3 scores: lowest score -2
    • 4 scores: lowest score -1
    • 5 scores: lowest score
    • 6 scores: average of lowest 2 scores -1
    • 7 to 8 scores: average of lowest 2 scores
    • 9 to 11 scores: average of lowest 3 scores
    • 12 to 14 scores: average of lowest 4 scores
    • 15 to 16 scores: average of lowest 5 scores
    • 17 to 18 scores: average of lowest 6 scores
    • 19 scores: average of lowest 7 scores
    • 20 scores: average of lowest 8 scores

Lanarkshire's Katie Graham wins in her debut in the USA

Katie Graham

Terrific debut win for Lanarkshire’s Katie Graham who lined up for Redland Cougars in her first ever USA college event and took home the Individual Title

Katie was -4 after 9 holes in round 2 when the heavens opened and play was a abandoned and her first round level par was enough to seal her first win in college golf. Redlands also room the team event to make it a double

Well done Katie amazing achievement at only 16 years of age

JENNIFER RANKINE WINS THE 2020 HAGGS CASTLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AND HEATHER MUSHET WINS AT ELDERSLIE

Jennifer Rankine - 2020 Haggs Castle Ladies Champion

Haggs Castle GC Finals Day
took place today in glorious sunshine.

The Ladies final pitted 4 times champion Jennifer Rankine against 2014 Champion Laura McGeachy, a repeat of 4 previous Ladies Championship Finals.

Both players had been in good form recently and the final was expected to be a close contest.  So it proved.

Jennifer was 1 up playing the 11th and both players were slightly short with their tee shots.  Laura unfortunately missed an opportunity to get back to level. After halving the 12th Laura drove into trouble at 13th and went 2 down.

Laura was again in difficulty at 14th to go 3 down.  The 15th was halved leaving Jennifer 3 up with 3 to play.

The 16th was played well by both players but the resultant half left Jennifer a 3& 2 winner and Champion for the fifth time.

Many thanks go to Neal Stewart for the report and photograph
