With just 24 days to go until the new World Handicap System (WHS) comes into play in Scotland, 500 golfers from across the country benefitted from Scottish Golf’s latest Zoom Panel Call.

Hosted by Scottish Golf’s Club Business Manager, Iain Evans, golfers from across Scotland had the opportunity to hear from, and pose questions to, Scottish Golf’s Handicapping and Course Rating Team of David Kernohan and Adam Phillips.

The call, which was available on a first-come, first-serve basis, was the first sell-out webinar hosted by Scottish Golf and is now available to view by CLICKING THIS LINK  or viewing on the video below

David Kernohan, Handicapping and Course Rating at Scottish Golf said, “As we near the implementation of WHS in Scotland, we were delighted with the overwhelming response to this week’s call.

“We understand that golfer education is crucial over the next 12 months and we will continue to provide additional opportunities for golfers to learn more.

Following the huge demand for this week’s call, we are also looking at options to expand our Zoom Panel Call capacity to ensure more golfers can tune-in to these sessions live.”

COVID UPDATE BY SCOTTISH GOLF - 7TH OCTOBER 2020

 

Following the First Minister’s latest update in Parliament on Wednesday 7 October, Scottish Golf has been in dialogue with our partners at sportscotland and the Scottish Government to obtain further clarity about the new national restrictions being implemented across Scotland and how these might impact private member clubs.

On-course golf activities can continue under our current Phase 3 Guidance, with up to four players from four different households allowed to participate together. There are no changes to access to toilet facilities, locker rooms or professional shops which can continue to be utilised provided all appropriate measures, such as use of face masks, increased sanitation are adhered to. 

The key changes that apply to all golf club, are the hospitality restrictions which apply to private members clubs across the country. These are summarised below and are effective from 6pm on Friday 9^th October 2020:

• Pubs and licensed cafes in five Scottish health board areas - Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire & Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley - must shut to all but takeaway customers
   
• In other parts of Scotland not mentioned above, pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes can operate 6am to 6pm but cannot serve alcohol indoors during that time. These premises can sell alcohol outdoors until 10pm. 
   
• Rules on gatherings remain the same with a maximum of six people from two households permitted.  

The changes announced vary across different regions of the country and we would encourage all clubs to familiarise themselves with the latest guidance and how it may impact their operations. These measures are in place for an initial 16-day period and will be reviewed thereafter by the Scottish Government. 

Scottish Golf remains in dialogue with sportscotland and the Scottish Government to seek further clarification on the potential impact of restrictions on indoor activity for driving ranges and swing rooms. Further information will be provided as and when it is received from government.

The Scottish Veteran Ladies' Golf Association (SVLGA)  had to cancel their team events but it’s never to soon to prepare for 2021. 

Their 2020 squad of players have started winter matches by visiting East Renfrewshire GC, home club of Gillian Kyle. 

Karen Ballantyne (SVLGA Captain) thanked  Gillian for arranging this and to the club for their hospitality and said."Looking at the scores, our players have been working hard on their games during the past few months."

Matthew ‘ absolutely thrilled’ to become an Honorary Member of the R&A

Sol­heim Cup cap­tain Ca­tri­ona Matthew has ac­cepted an in­vi­ta­tion to be­come an Hon­orary Mem­ber of The Royal and An­cient Golf Club of St An­drews.

The Scot is one of four new hon­orary mem­bers, join­ing Ernie Els, Padraig Har­ring­ton and Nick Price. The quar­tet have won 11 ma­jor cham­pi­onships and are de­scribed by the Royal and An­cient Golf Club as “among the most suc­cess­ful and in­flu­en­tial pro­fes­sional golfers of the mod­ern era and... out­stand­ing am­bas­sadors for the sport”.

Matthew has achieved 11 pro­fes­sional vic­to­ries in her ca­reer, with the pin­na­cle be­ing her tri­umph at the Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2009 when she was also named Ladies Euro­pean Tour player of the year.

The North Ber­wick golfer has rep­re­sented the Euro­pean Sol­heim Cup team on nine oc­ca­sions and was a mem­ber of three win­ning teams. In 2019, she cap­tained the Euro­pean team to a mem­o­rable 14 ½ - 13 ½ vic­tor y at Gle­nea­gles and will skip­per the side again next year when they take on the United States in Toledo, Ohio.

Matthew also enjoyed a hugely suc­cess­ful am­a­teur ca­reer, rep­re­sent­ing Great Bri­tain and Ireland and was in the Cur­tis Cup on three oc­ca­sions and win­ning the Women’s Am­a­teur Cham­pi­onship.

She said: “I am ab­so­lutely thrilled to be made an Hon­orary Mem­ber of The Royal and An­cient Golf Club and I feel very priv­i­leged to be join­ing such an il­lus­tri­ous group of Hon­orary Mem­bers who are such renowned fig­ures in the game of golf.

“I was for­tu­nate enough to be one of the first re­cip­i­ents of an R& A Schol­ar­ship at the Uni­ver­sity of Stir­ling and it gave me some fan­tas­tic op­por­tu­ni­ties to de­velop my ca­reer as a young golfer.

“The Club and the R& A do so much to grow the game and I’m hugely sup­port­ive of the work they are do­ing to sup­port women’s golf and par­tic­u­larly the AIG Women’s Open.”

Scottish Golf latest Covid Updates - 23rd September

 

Following the First Minister’s latest update in Parliament on Tuesday 22 September, Scottish Golf has been in dialogue with our partners at sportscotland and the Scottish Government to obtain further clarity about the new national restrictions being implemented across Scotland.

Scottish Golf is now in a position to provide all Clubs with Updated Phase 3 Guidance for all Golf Clubs and Golfers.
 
 The changes are summarised as follows and unless otherwise stated are effective immediately:

• Any golf club/course which is accessed regularly by over 200 members or visitors, in a single day, must have in place a designated COVID officer and appropriate risk assessments. More detail is available in sportscotland’s Phase 3: Return to Sport and Physical Activity guidelines here.
   
• For adults, a maximum of 30 people including coaches and officials can combine to essentially create a ‘competition bubble’ as long as physical distancing measures are maintained. Competition organisers should ensure that no two ‘bubbles’ come into contact with each other at any time throughout the day.
   
• Caddy services may resume, providing all physical distancing and hygiene measures are adhered to. There are no restrictions on the number of households a caddy can have contact with per day but services should be limited to carrying of a bag, providing advice only and not passing golf clubs to the player.
   
• Indoor and outdoor hospitality will be required to close at 10 pm from Friday 25 September onwards, this includes clubhouse facilities and beer gardens which may have been in operation.
   
• Golfers from different households should travel separately.

Clubs should also note that additional funding has been allocated to local Environmental Health teams, allowing for greater capacity for inspections of businesses to enhance compliance and enforcement of current restrictions.

2020 – TRANSITION OF CONGU HANDICAPS  TO WHS HANDICAP INDEX

In order to move from CONGU to WHS handicaps on the 2nd November 2020 all players’ current Handicap Records will be reprocessed using the WHS principles. The calculation will identify the best 8 of the last 20 Qualifying Scores, if posted during the last 3 years in Scotland, and factor in:

• The adjusted Gross Score (Score Differential)
• The Course Rating 
• The Slope Rating of the tees played

If a player has submitted less than 20 scores in the last 3 years, the calculation will be done in a similar manner to the method of allocating new handicaps, as shown below.

If less than 20 Qualifying Scores posted in the last 2 years

• 3 scores: lowest score -2
• 4 scores: lowest score -1
• 5 scores: lowest score
• 6 scores: average of lowest 2 scores -1
• 7 to 8 scores: average of lowest 2 scores
• 9 to 11 scores: average of lowest 3 scores
• 12 to 14 scores: average of lowest 4 scores
• 15 to 16 scores: average of lowest 5 scores
• 17 to 18 scores: average of lowest 6 scores
• 19 scores: average of lowest 7 scores

LATEST UPDATE FOR GOLFERS IN SCOTLAND (10th SEPTEMBER 2020)

Following the First Minister’s update in Parliament today (10 September), Scottish Golf would like to clarify that on-course golf activity can continue under our current Phase 3 Guidance, with up to four players from four different household allowed to participate together. 

 
Golf Clubs with hospitality venues should also note that the following changes are effective from Monday 14 September:

A maximum of six people from two households can meet both indoors and outdoors.

Staff will be required by law to wear face coverings.

Customers will be required to wear face coverings while moving around inside a hospitality venue such as entering or exiting a venue or going to the toilet.

HEATHER MACRAE WINS THE PGA WPGA CHAMPIONSHIP

 Heather MacRae (pictured above) won the PGA WPGA Championship for the 2nd year in a row today and 3rd time in all. 

The Scot posted a 36-hole score of 3-under at Kedleston Park to finish a shot clear of Keely  Chiericato & 2 ahead of Alison Nicholas

JENNIFER RANKINE WINS THE 2020 HAGGS CASTLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AND HEATHER MUSHET WINS AT ELDERSLIE

Jennifer Rankine - 2020 Haggs Castle Ladies Champion

Haggs Castle GC Finals Day took place today in glorious sunshine.  

The Ladies final pitted 4 times champion Jennifer Rankine against 2014 Champion Laura McGeachy, a repeat of 4 previous Ladies Championship Finals. 

Both players had been in good form recently and the final was expected to be a close contest.  So it proved.  

Jennifer was 1 up playing the 11th and both players were slightly short with their tee shots.  Laura unfortunately missed an opportunity to get back to level. After halving the 12th Laura drove into trouble at 13th and went 2 down. 

Laura was again in difficulty at 14th to go 3 down.  The 15th was halved leaving Jennifer 3 up with 3 to play.  

The 16th was played well by both players but the resultant half left Jennifer a 3& 2 winner and Champion for the fifth time.

A family affair for the Foster Family -- Amy and Brother Gregor are Champions

Amy Foster (pictured above) has just won the Ratho Park Ladies Club Championship this year. 

We understand that at just 20 she is the youngest ever winner of the Ladies Championship at Ratho. 

Amy, who is a 4th year student at Heriot Watt in Edinburgh won the Championship the same weekend her brother Gregor won the Royal Burgess mens Club championship. — A double family celebration.  

Thanks go to  a very proud  Dad ... Scott.who has sent us this news and many congrats go to the Foster Family.

Also that day the Douglas Park Golf Club held their finals day with D&A county team member Fiona Rattray putting on a display of great golf to beat Renfrewshire's Shirley Back  -- (Poor Shirley got stung at the side of her eye at the 3rd green by a wasp but I believe all is ok now.)

The Douglas Park Ladies Senior Championship (over 70's)  was a very close encounter between Past RLCGA County Captain June Lockhart and  Helen Robertson. This was a very friendly and close battle with Helen managing to win on the 18th 

No spectators were allowed to watch these matches so no more photos as I was a caddy in the Seniors Match !! -- However here is a short video at the end with Ladies Vice Captain Paula Galloway presenting the Seniors Trophy at the end.

The UK’s first ladies-only Pro-Am is back for the third year running, and this time it’s heading to The Irvine Golf Club in Ayrshire on Tuesday October 6.

We know many of you were disappointed not to be able to head to the AIG Women's Open at Royal Troon this year, but this Scottish jaunt could be the next best thing.

Designed to let you experience some light-hearted team competition (and also win some fabulous team and individual prizes), the teams consistent of three amateurs and one professional.

Don’t know a female pro who would be up for it?

Well never fear, the organisers will find someone suitable to partner you up with. All you need to provide is yourself and two pals.

Entry is £255 per team of three amateurs and £30 per pro; this includes tea or coffee on arrival and a post-comp lunch, too.
