By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Royal Dornoch’s Alison Bartlett is the halfway leader in the Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play golf championship at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club, near Stranraer, today.
Alison, one of the farthest travelled players in the field of 77, shot a two-over-par 73 to lead by two shots from Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) and Lanark’s May Hughes.
Bartlett was four over par after bogeys at the fifth, sixth, short seventh and 12th before finishing strongly with a birdie at the par-4 17th and anotther birdie at the par-5 18th for one-under-par 34 for the inward nine holes.
Fenton was four over par after only four holes, with a double bogey 7 at the long third and bogeys at the second and fifth. Birdies at the ninth and long 11th helped her salvage halves of 39 and 36.
Defending champion Heather Anderson is lying joint fourth on 76. The short holes were costly for the Blairgowrie player – double bogeys at the par-3 seventh and 11th and another shot shead at the short 10th in halves of 39 and 37.
The seniors’ stroke-play event is a championship in itself over 36 holes but the 16 players with the lowest aggregates at the end of two rounds will go forward to conest the Scottish senior match-play championship.

Scottish Seniors Championship begins on Tuesday 28th June

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE S L G A

Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) will be defending the Scottish Seniors’ Strokeplay Championship against a strong field at Portpatrick Dunskey from June 28-July 1.

The Championship is split into two events. The strokeplay winner is crowned after the first 36-holes – the top 16 players then go through to battle it out for the matchplay title.

Fiona De Vries (St Regulus), who was the runner-up in the strokeplay at Fortrose and Rosemarkie last year, is unable to defend the Matchplay Championship as she broke her leg in April when she was competing for Scotland at the World Senior Curling Championships in Minnesota.

Scotland won the European Seniors’ Team Championship last year and Anderson will be joined in the line-up by another four members of the gold medal winning squad – the Tain pair of Mary Smith and Anne Ryan, Moira Thomson (Gullane) and Lorna Bennett (Ladybank).

Bennett, a many times Fife Champion, is the backmarker with a handicap of one and the majority of the 80-strong field have handicaps in single figures.

AYRSHIRE LEAD WEST DIVISION RACE BY BEATING RENFREWSHIRE

Ayrshire Colours - Click to enlarge

Ayrshire beat last year's Scottish county champions Renfrewshire 5-4 today on Day 2 of the West Division women's inter-county golf team championship at Kilmarnock Barassie.
The weather was dreadful in the morning but cleared up a bit in mid-afternoon.
The Ayrshire v Renfrewshire match was very close with both teams sitting on 4 points with one game to finish - Linzi Allan (Ayrshire) v Gillian McGinlay (Renfrewshire). It was all square going down the 18th.
Linzi put her second in the greenside bunker and Gillian also missed the green with her second. Gillian chipped on and narrowly missed her putt. Linzi got up and down out the bunker to win the game by one hole and the match for Ayrshire 5-4.
Ayrshire had taken a 2-1 lead in the morning foursomes and the singles were shared 3-3. The Briggs girls, Megan and Eilidh, ad a 100 per cent win record through the foursomes and singles but it was not enough to deny Ayrshire victory.
Lanarkshire, who were well beaten by Renfrewshire on Day 1, kept their hopes alive by beating Dunbartonshire 7-2.
Lanarkshire lost the top foursome but won the other two to lead 2-1 going into the singles in which they took five of the six available points.
In the other match, Lanarkshire beat Dunbartonshire and Argyll 7-2.
Going into the final day, Ayrshire have 2pt, Lanarkshire 1, Renfrewshire 1pt and Dunbartonshire and Argyll 0pt. Ayrshire play Lanarkshire in their final match. It should be an exciting finish to see who goes forward to the Scottish county finals in September as West Division champions.

Louise Kenney is leading the Ladies Order of Merit.

From the SLGA Website
After an impressive run of form, Louise Kenney, the new Scottish Ladies' Amateur Champion, has retained her lead in the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association's Order of Merit.
The Pitreavie 28-year-old will be making her debut for the Great Britain and Ireland team against the Continent of Europe in the Vagliano Trophy at Royal Porthcawl later this month and she will travel to Wales as the Scottish No. 1.
With a top 15 finish in the St Rule Trophy, Kenney has amassed 2078 points at the top of the Order of Merit. Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), the beaten finalist in the Scottish Championship, is the nearest challenger with 1297 points following a second place in the Munross
But it is close at the top with Pamela Pretswell (1260), Jane Turner (1114), Kelsey MacDonald (1053) and Rachael Watton (1050) all over the 1000 points mark.

Kenney won the Order of Merit in 2009 but her challengers will have a chance to close the gap as she is not in the line-up for the next counting event, this weekend's Irish Women's Strokeplay Championship

Eilidh Sets Sights on Girls' Double
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), who showed form at senior level by reaching the final of the Scottish Ladies' Amateur Championship at Machrihanish last month, has set the early pace in her bid to retain the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association's Girls' Order of Merit.
After just three tournaments, the 18-year-old has amassed 683 points. She finished second in both the Munross Trophy and the Scottish Schools
Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne) also finished runner-up in the Schools' event and she is in second place on the list with 640 points.
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), the Scottish Schools' Champion, and Clara Young (North Berwick), who will be playing for Great Britian and Ireland in this month's Under-16 match against the Continent of Europe in Wales, are in joint third spot with 600 points
The next Girls' Order of Merit tournament is the Janice Moodie Trophy at Windyhill on July 1.

SGU BOARD DELEGATION TO MEET WITH AREAS TO PROGRESS AMALGAMATION DISCUSSIONS

The Scottish Golf Union Board has appointed three of its Directors to meet with its 16 Area Associations to ascertain the reasons behind the recent rejection of its proposal for amalgamation with the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association.

Directors Gordon Murray, Maurice Shields and Iain Harvey will form the group to meet with representatives of the Areas who last month voted 10 – 6 against the formation of a single governing body for amateur golf in Scotland.

Douglas Connon, Chairman of the Scottish Golf Union, said: “While the amalgamation proposal was rejected, we are encouraged that there is overwhelming support for the principle of amalgamation and a commitment from our shareholders to find a solution to achieve amalgamation.”

“The Board has invited three Directors to find out what those who voted against amalgamation regarded as unacceptable and importantly what key issues need further consideration to help achieve an agreement going forward.” he added.

The three Directors will undertake this task with the objective of reporting back to the SGU Board by the end of July. Thereafter, the Board will consider the best way forward in consultation with counterparts at the SLGA.

Shareholders representing the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association had previously voted 93% in favour of the amalgamation proposals, while a poll of 295 of the SGU’s affiliated clubs supported the proposed changes by an 89.2% majority.

Sally loses her trolley but still wins !!

Sally and DP Vice Captain Lynda Smith - Click to enlarge
Posted by Picasa

Sally Macfarlane won the Lady Captain's Day prize at Douglas Park yesterday despite losing her trolley and clubs out on the course. She was at the long par 5 10th green when she turned round after putting to discover that her clubs and trolley had disappeared! Her playing partners and some gents that were in the game behind helped in the hunt.
Lo and behold the trolley was then spotted in the distance having travelled about 200 yards --- past the 11th tee , missed a ditch and crossed the 4th fairway to end up in the trees next to a field !!
One of her younger and fitter playing partners sprinted across the course to retrieve the wayward trolley. Her game went off at that point and Sally continued her good round to win the prize of the day !
Her tale was shared with the ladies who attended a lovely buffet supper after the event
