The home of golf is set to lose another club after officials at Dollar confirmed this morning that it would be closing at the end of December.
An annual general meeting was held on Monday night and a short statement on the club’s website declared that the oldest club in Clackmannanshire would be shutting down at the end of the year.
Founded in 1890, the Dollar Golf Club had been occupying its present site on the slopes of the Ochil Hills since 1906.
The demise of Dollar is the latest in a series of club closures in 2019 as a brutal cull continues in these challenging times.
In an age of dwindling memberships and exacting financial conditions, a number of clubs across the country continue to eke out a hand to mouth existence. Others have been forced to bow to the inevitable.
Carrick Knowe in Edinburgh and Brunston Castle in Ayrshire closed earlier this year while the 126-year-old Eastwood club on Glasgow’s southside shut in May.
Camperdown in Dundee was closed by the city council in a cost-cutting measure and Mount Ellen in Gartcosh, which was formed back in 1904, closed its doors in September.
Letham Grange near Arbroath was also dissolved while the future of half-a-dozen municipal courses in the Glasgow area remain in doubt.
