Day 3 Curtis Cup - USA win the Curtis cup

Team USA dominated the final-day singles to retain the Curtis Cup with a crushing five-point victory over Great Britain and Ireland at Conwy.

Caley McGinty was the only player on the home side to register a singles win in a one-sided contest, with the visitors winning six of the eight matches to post a 12.5-7.5 triumph, their first away victory since 2008.

Scotland’s Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) was denied a win in the top match despite being three up on Jensen Castle with four to play, only for Darling to bogey the 15th and 16th before Castle birdied the last to snatch an unlikely half.

AIG Women's Open star Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) took her match against Rachel Kuehn to the final hole, where the Scot lost to  Kuehn which also confirmed Team USA as the overall winners

The day started off quite exciting and Midlothian players were all full of enthusiasm. Match 1 got underway against Fife who were defending their title and it all became very tense out there as most of our players if not all were all square or down against their opponents.  Team Midlothian dug deep, hung in there and fought well into the back 9. The score line was changing in favour but only slightly. We ended up triumphing in 4 games against Fife with an amazing half at the 18th going via the trees and 3 ‘good’ losses going all the way to the 17th which gave us a satisfying 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

East Lothian Versus Stirling & Clackmannan in Match 2. If East Lothian was to win 5-3, The tournament office were onto the big countback which they had been preparing for updating their stats every day. It was tight most of the way for the majority of their games. Stirling & Clackmannan came through in the end with a 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

Match 2 result today meant Midlothian were out right winners on 5 match points (14 game points). Second was East Lothian 3 match points (12.5 game points), 3rd was Stirling & Clackmannan 3 match points (11 game points) and fourth Fife on 1 match point (10 1/2 game points).

Fife golf tournament to make history as women are invited to take on men in battle of sexes

By Martin Dempster from the Scotsman THE SCOTSMAN

The East of Scotland Open Championship is to become the first battle of the sexes in a leading Scottish amateur golf tournament after a decision to open up the 48th staging of the event at Lundin to women.

The tournament on 27-28 June will feature men and women playing for the same prize, won in the past by some famous names in Scottish golf, including George Macgregor, Sandy Stephen and Richie Ramsay.

The change, which has the support of the R&A and Scottish Golf, comes just over five years after Lundin, founded in 1868, became a mixed membership club.

“It is an exciting change,” said David Moir, a long-serving East of Scotland Open committee member and past president of the Scottish Golf Union. “We’ve actually been thinking about this for a while as we have club competitions among members that are mixed events, which is great.

“The organising committee remain very passionate about the East of Scotland Amateur Stroke Play Championship and we are delighted to be incorporating women into the event for the first time.

“The Women’s Amateur Championship is taking place at the same time but, with that down to the semi-final and final stage by the weekend, we are hoping to get some of the players coming over from Kilmarnock (Barassie).

A maximum of 18 women will feature in a 72-strong field on the Fife coast this summer in a move that mirrors the Berkhamsted Trophy in England being opened up to women for the first time. In the professional game, a mixed event is being hosted by Henrik Stenson and Annika Sorenstam in June.

Ramsay, the winner in 2004, has welcomed the change, saying: “It is good that they are trying new ways to open up this event. Being proactive like this is essential for the future of many events. It’s a lovely course and the design lends itself to this format.”

Hannah Darling, the top Scot in the Women’s Amateur Golf Ranking, also backed the decision, though she will be unable to play at Lundin due to the aforementioned Women’s Amateur Championship coming to a conclusion on the Ayrshire coast at the same time.

“This is a great opportunity for women to be introduced to this event,” said the two-time Scottish Girls’ champion from Broomieknowe. “Hopefully, it’s the first of many opportunities we will be given. Unfortunately, I can’t play, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out.”

With World Amateur Golf Ranking points on offer, the Lundin event will be open to players with handicap of 0.4 or better. While competing for the main prize, the Denholm Trophy, women competitors will also be playing for a separate piece of silverware.

If no women qualify for the final 36 holes, the leading four after two rounds will progress to the Sunday to compete for that trophy as opposed to it being awarded to the top woman following Saturday’s play.

Clare Queen, performance director at Scottish Golf, said: “We are always looking at ways we can strengthen the female game in Scotland. The opportunity to compete on a great course like Lundin in a high-quality field is a great one for females who compete in Scotland, especially during the quieter summer months."

Juniors playing in adult events is no brainer

By Martin Dempster - The Scotsman Newspaper

So, the “Pillocks of the Year” prize goes to the lady members who wanted to stop juniors from taking part in their club competitions before someone with a grasp on modern-day life intervened.

Well done to John Clark, the managing director of Ping, for quickly stepping in and avoiding any further embarassment for Thonock Park, which is owned by the equipment manufacturer, but what on earth possessed those lady members at the Lincolnshire club to pass such a vote?

Was it because they are precious wee souls and don’t like losing out to youngsters in competitions? If so, they should hang their heads in shame because such an attitude is just not acceptable in the sport.
No wonder there were lots of people expressing disbelief over the decision before Clark issued a statement from Ping’s European headquarters nearby to say that it had been revoked due to the fact it was “completely against the values, principles and philosophies” of the company.

“This shouldn’t even be a debate/question!” declared Bradley Neil, the 2014 Amateur champion, on Twitter and, in fairness, he should know, having played in men’s competitions at Blairgowrie as he came through the junior ranks.

“Most of the best golfers – if not all – this game has seen will have played adult competitions as a junior. How can we expect to grow the game if we deny them the chance to improve?”
Exactly and how ironic that this story came to light on the same day that 15-year-old Englishman Josh Hill earned a place in the record books by becoming the youngest winner of an Official World Golf Ranking event with his victory in the Al Ain Open on the MENA Tour, one of the game’s third-tier circuits. Like many players of his age, Hill has seen his game flourish through competing against adults from an early age.

There’s more to it than just that, though. Youngsters can learn life skills from spending time in adult company and, speaking from experience,
a golf course can be one of
the best places to appreciate that.

Yes, of course, there are some people out there who aren’t necessarily the ideal role models but, in the main, the majority of people that play the game can be instrumental in that respect and, what’s more, are happy to do so.

It really is a no brainer that juniors should be allowed to play in adult competitions and even more so these days when older members should feel a sense of duty when it comes to doing everything possible to proctect the future of their golf club.

If Ping hadn’t stepped in, those lady members at Thonock Park would have been scoring a shocking own goal as far as the club was concerned and also for the game itself in the bigger picture.
At a time when attracting new blood into the game is vital, the sport needs more players like Hannah Darling, for example, who has been encouraged by her home club, Broomieknowe, and has seen her talent blossom as a consequence.

Would she be on the verge of breaking into the world’s top 100 if she’d been stopped from playing against older and more experienced players over the last few years? Probably not.

Hannah Darling qualifies for the R&A Girls Amateur Championship matchplay stages

Alessia Nobilio showed why she is the highest-ranked player in the field for the centenary R and A Girls’ Amateur Championship with a sterling performance at Panmure today to finish as the leading qualifier amond the 64 who go forward to the match-play stages.
Nobilio, who hails from Milan, compiled a six-under-par round of 65 to move to 11-under-par for the championship and secure her place in the last 64, one shot ahead of her nearest rival Lucie Malchirand from France.
Nobilio’s blemish-free card
Ranked sixth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Nobilio did not drop a shot in the two stroke-play rounds and four birdies in her opening six holes in benign conditions at the challenging Angus links this morning set her well on her way.
The winner of the Italian Ladies stroke-play championship and the Citta di Milano Trofeo Gianni Albertini as well as a member of the winning Continent of Europe Vagliano Team in June picked up further shots on the 10th and 11th to coast home.
Slovenia’s Pia Babnik, the Helen Holm Scottish women’s open champion, qualified comfortably with a three-under-par total of 139 following a one-over-par 72, two shots clear of Germany’s Christin Eisenbeiss.
Broomieknowe’s Hannah Darling qualified as the leading Scot on level par after a two-over-par 72. The two-time Scottish Girls’ Amateur Champion traded four birdies with six bogeys. She was the only Scottish make the cut.
The cut fell at nine-over-par with former champions Emilie Paltrinieri and Lily May Humphries qualifying on three-over and seven-over respectively.
The qualifiers will each be looking to follow in the footsteps of the four past champions in this event who were named in the European Solheim Cup team this week: Georgia Hall, Suzann Pettersen, Anna Nordqvist and Azahara Munoz.
Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes including Saturday’s final. The winner will receive exemptions into the 2020 Womens Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the Augusta National Womens Amateur Championship.

DARLING HOLDS LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND AT PARKSTONE

Hannah Darling -- Photo courtesy of the EGA
Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) has taken the lead at the European Ladies' Amateur Championship.

The Scottish player, who celebrated her 16th birthday last week, fired a bogey-free 68 (-4) in round three at Parkstone Golf Club to top the leaderboard on eight-under-par.
"I enjoyed it out there a lot. I just stuck to my processes, I had no idea where I was on the leaderboad" said Darling. "Obviously it's a big tournament but it's still the same golf course. There's no pressure on me to be honest, I'm only 16, so I'm just going to enjoy it tomorrow and see what happens in the end."
Darling, the second youngest player in the 144-player field, will have a chance to become the first ever Scottish player to win the European Ladies' Amateur Championship on Saturday. Victory would also qualify her for the AIG Women's British Open to be held at Woburn next week.
France's Chloé Salort shot the lowest round of the day. The French player made four birdies and an eagle on her way to shooting a five-under-par 67. Two birdies in the last four holes earned Salort a place in the final pairing just three shots behind.

Shannon McWilliam finished on +3
Scots - Hazel Macgarvie, Chloe Goadby and Louise Duncan all missed the cut

HANNAH DARLING SECURES HOME VICTORY AT THE SCOTTISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Scotland’s Hannah Darling led from start to finish at the 2019 Scottish Girls’ Open Championship to claim the title at The Home of Golf on Friday afternoon.
Taking a three-shot lead into the final round, the 15-year-old from Broomieknowe Golf Club carded her second even-par round of the week to finish on four-under-par for a final total of 209.
England’s Ellie Gower was two-under-par through 12 but an eight on the penultimate hole put an end to her chase. Darling, who had spoken about maintaining a level-head throughout the week did just that, finishing with a birdie on 18 to secure a six-shot advantage and the Scottish Girls’ Championship.
Speaking to Scottish Golf following the trophy presentation, Darling said:
“I was really steady out there today and went on a bit of a par-run, but I think that was worth it. Ellie was holing quite a few putts and had me worried at some points but I stuck to my game pan and just really happy to come away with the win.”
Darling now turns her attention to next week’s Helen Holm Women’s Open at Troon. With next week’s event counting towards qualification for The PING Junior Solheim Cup, the Scots teenager is hoping she can take advantage of her recent run of form, adding:
Next week’s event is a women’s event so obviously it will step up another level but I am definitely happy with where my game is at the moment and ready to take on the challenge of next week and hopefully I will come away with another good performance.”

HANNAH DARLING LEADS AFTER ROUND 1 OF THE SCOTTISH GIRLS

From the Scottish Golf Website (Photo courtesy of Scottish Golf)

Hannah Darling soared to the top of the Scottish Girls’ Open leaderboard on Wednesday afternoon after posting an impressive four-under-par 67 on St Andrews’ Eden Course.

Darling fired six birdies in her opening nine holes and a steady closing stretch gave the Broomieknowe teenager a one-shot lead over the rest of the field.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after her round, Darling said: “I stuck to my processes well today, I had a few bogeys out there but I didn’t let that get me down. Everyone is going to have bad holes out there because it is that sort of golf course but I stayed patient and let the birdies come to me and I was pretty chuffed overall.”

Looking ahead to the next two rounds, Darling added: “It’s a marathon and not a sprint so I am just taking each day as it comes. I will re-assess tomorrow when I wake up, but I am just happy with what has happened.” Germany’s Olivia Bergner sits in second place, one stroke behind Darling after round one while four players, including top seed Ani Eisenhut, are tied for third on -1.

LOUISE IS 3RD AND HANNAH DARLING IS RUNNER UP IN THE TELEGRAPH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THE BEST ROUND OF THE WEEK

Hannah Darling

The girls’ title at the Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship at PGA Catalunya  was a close-run affair – in Sophie Johnson’s eyes at least – until the very last putt of the 54-hole finals.

Johnson looked to be in a two-way scrap with Scotland’s Louise Duncan (West Kilbride)

However, little did the England Under-18 player know that Louise's compatriot Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) was on her way to a superb 69 – the best round of the Championship and the only player to break 70 across both finals – from the lead-out group.

Johnson said: “I was told the scores on the 16th and I thought ‘Oh my God!’ It was an unbelievable score by Hannah so she must have played amazingly.

As Johnson putted out, Darling, 15, sat by the galleries on the 18th before describing the enormity of her round. “After my week, this really meant a lot, but it was a case of ‘What if?’,” she admitted after a 79 and 78.

LOUISE DUNCAN IN 2nd PLACE AFTER ROUND ONE OF VITALITY JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

In each of the past two years, England’s Sophie Johnson has missed out on qualifying for the Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship finals by a single shot.

But the England Under-18 player cast aside those disappointments in fine style on Wednesday, producing the round of the day to lead the girls’ event by two shots at a sun-kissed PGA Catalunya Resort in Barcelona

Scotland’s Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) shot a fine 73 to be in 2nd place and is one clear of Charlotte Heath, another returning finalist, in the 54-hole strokeplay event.

Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) is in 5th place on 7 over
