D&A Triumph on Day 3 and win the West of Scotland Inter County Jamboree at Cardross

D&A Winning Team

Well … we played the Inter-Counties Championship at Cardross Golf Club this week.

It was a wee bit different due to Covid. It was nice to see all our friends from Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. We had close games and nail biting finishes. We (Dumbarton and Argyll) managed to come out on top😳 It was a pleasure to be Team Captain and thanks to our County Captain Jean, and her committee, for managing to get it played this year. Now we have a wee road trip to Forres for the finals in August πŸ’™πŸŒπŸΌ‍♀️

Thanks go to Lorraine Campbell (D&A) for her report and photograph

At the start of Day 3 three of the counties were in contention to win. In a close match with some close games between Ayrshire and D&A , D&A won by 4.5 to 3.5.

This meant that D&A could only be beaten if Renfrewshire beat Lanarkshire. After 6 games were completed the score in that match  was 3 all but Lanarkshire won the last 2 games at the 18th to win 5 to 3.   - 5 of the 8 matches ended up going down the 18th !!

D&A last won the Inter County Jamboree in 2016 when it was played at Douglas Park Golf Club  when D&A was the host  county  and now again at Cardross with 3 home players in the team have won again on County home soil.

Seven Scots Qualify for the British Amateur Matchplay Championship

At the renowned venue in the north-west, the English trio of Emily Price, Rosie Belsham and Isabelle Simpson were joined by Carolina Melgrati from Italy and Denmark’s Amalie Leth-Nissen in signing for one-under-par rounds of 71 in the Women's

7 Scots have qualified for the Matchplay which starts tomorrow including West of Scotland's  Hazel MacGarvie (Royal Troon) and Lorna McClymont (Milngavie) the 2019 D&A County Champion

WEST OF SCOTLAND COUNTIES CORONAVIRUS NOTIFICATIONS

All the West Of Scotland County Captains have announced to their members over the last couple of weeks the initial decisions with regards their County Championships and Inter-County Foursomes qualifiers.

AYRSHIRE (24th March)
Since I last wrote to you the situation with the Coronavirus has got much worse and therefore it will probably come as no surprise to you that, it is with great disappointment and regret, the Committee and I have decided to cancel the County Championship in April and the Foursomes in May
We had hoped that it may have been possible to keep these competitions going by adhering to social distancing and not using club house facilities. However, following the Prime Ministers announcement yesterday and for the safety and well being of our members and their families this will not be possible. These are very sad and unprecedented times.
Being an optimist, hopefully we will all get back to our golf in June.
Thank you for your continued understanding.
Take care and stay safe.
Joanne Sharp - Ayrshire County Captain

D&A (19th March)
In the current situation it has been reluctantly decided to cancel/postpone the County Championship and the Intercounty Foursomes/Commonwealth Spoons (qualifying rounds). The final of the Winter Foursomes scheduled for 28th March has also been postponed until later in the year. The committee will keep the situation under review and further updates will be posted.
Jean Lietch - D&A Captain

LANARKSHIRE (24th March)
Due to the ongoing situation with the Coronavirus, the committee and I have regrettably decided to cancel our County Championship at Drumpellier from 27-29th April. With the current government advice there was no option but to do this. I will keep you informed in due course about other fixtures. It's a sad decision to make but we have to be mindful of everyone's health.
Hopefully we will be back on the fairways soon. Take care everyone.
Fiona Norris - Lanarkshire County Captain

RENFREWSHIRE (19th March)
It's with a heavy heart that Vice Captain Donna (Jackson), Honorary President Pearl (Orr), the Committee and I have decided to postpone both the County Foursomes (at Elderslie GC on 27th April) and the County Championship (at Ranfurly Castle GC between 6 - 8th May) but we feel the health and well-being of our members has to be our priority.

If possible we will try and re-arrange both these events later in the season but, at the moment, we can give no guarantees.

Unfortunately, other competitions may also be affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic and its associated restrictions but we will keep you advised as we go along.

Sadly 2020 hasn't been kind to us so far, firstly with the horrendous wet weather and now the coronavirus but let's stay positive and hope we'll be back to normal real soon.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and continued support.

Sandra Littlejohn RLCGA Captain

Nikki Ferguson comments on a ban on Junior Girls playing in ladies Competitions

Nikki Ferguson -- Assistant Pro at Cathcart Castle

Ping have stepped in to overturn a widely criticised ban at Thonock Park Golf Club in Gainsborough.

The golf club, which is owned by Ping, voted last week to prohibit junior girls playing in ladies competitions.
Ping seemed less than happy with the decision from the club and immediately stepped in to rectify the situation.
“Upon hearing news on the result of this vote, Ping (the proprietors of Thonock Park) immediately revoked the proposal and have it very clear that it goes completely against the values, principles and philosophies of Ping and would never permit this to go ahead,” read a statement from Ping Europe’s managing director, John Clark
“Ping will continue working very closely with the committees of Thonock Park to ensure the club provides every member with the highest quality experience.
The ban received heavy backlash, with many taking to social media to criticise the decision.
Nikki -- D&A county Champion, Milngavie and Clober Champion 2014

As Past D&A County Champion Nikki Ferguson said on social media

"If I didn’t have the help from Clober and Milngavie GC growing up, I wouldn’t be where I am today! I won the Club Championship when I was a Junior. "

"Dunbartonshire & Argyll Ladies County helped me massively as well. I made so many friends growing up, many I’m still friends with today! "

"This should not be getting asked in this modern world!"
