The day started off quite exciting and Midlothian players were all full of enthusiasm. Match 1 got underway against Fife who were defending their title and it all became very tense out there as most of our players if not all were all square or down against their opponents.  Team Midlothian dug deep, hung in there and fought well into the back 9. The score line was changing in favour but only slightly. We ended up triumphing in 4 games against Fife with an amazing half at the 18th going via the trees and 3 ‘good’ losses going all the way to the 17th which gave us a satisfying 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

East Lothian Versus Stirling & Clackmannan in Match 2. If East Lothian was to win 5-3, The tournament office were onto the big countback which they had been preparing for updating their stats every day. It was tight most of the way for the majority of their games. Stirling & Clackmannan came through in the end with a 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

Match 2 result today meant Midlothian were out right winners on 5 match points (14 game points). Second was East Lothian 3 match points (12.5 game points), 3rd was Stirling & Clackmannan 3 match points (11 game points) and fourth Fife on 1 match point (10 1/2 game points).

Freya Constable wins the Midlothian County Championship

Freya Constable
From the Midlothian Website

The Midlothian County Championship Final was s the younger generation final between Freya Constable  (Prestonfield) and Emma Morrison (Gullane) who both sped round 17 holes in 2 hours without it affecting their golf.

Freya got off to a head start from the 1st hole and would continue to lead most of the way. Emma was hot on her heels in the front 9 but Freya had the edge in the back 9.

A couple of missed opportunities from Emma with short putts at 13 and 14, which, if made, could have resulted in all square through 14, let Freya lead by 2 holes. Freya looked comfortable with her lead but Emma came right back at her with a magical eagle 3 at the 16th.

Freya stepped aside to give Emma the honour on the tee and they both reached the 17th green in 2. Freya looking for a half would let her first putt slide by the hole by 5 feet, but as cool as a cucumber she stepped up without any fuss and slotted the return putt to win 2/1.

The Champion necklace was presented on the 17th green to Freya by previous (2019) Champion Louise Fraser. Well done to both players getting to The Championship Final, a fabulous achievement by the youngsters and congratulations to Freya Constable, The Midlothian 2021 Champion.

Hannah Darling: Sixteen-year-old Scot believes she can be world's best golfer

Sixteen-year-old Scot Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) "definitely" believes she can be the world's best golfer as she bids to compete in the Junior Solheim Cup on home soil later this year.

Darling could be the only Scot named in Team Europe's squad for the junior event in Gleneagles during September. The teen has won six Scottish titles and even had compatriot and major winner Catriona Matthew caddy for her.

"I definitely think I can be [the best in the world]," she told BBC Scotland. "There would be no point in getting out of bed and doing what I'm doing if I didn't have that belief. It's something I can achieve if I put in the effort, play well enough and work hard enough."

MIDLOTHIAN COUNTY WIN AGAINST SCOTTISH VETS TEAM IN FRIENDLY MATCH

Midlothian and Scottish Vets
This is SVLGA Captain Ellie Whyte’s report of our recent match v Midlothian County Ladies at Bruntsfield Links with apologies on the delay in posting this:

Ten ladies represented SVLGA to enjoy a friendly competitive match against Midlothian County Ladies

The venue was rather special, the Bruntsfield Links Golf Club which is the 4th oldest golf club In the world. The course has recently been remodelled and is now admitting lady members so we were all excited to be amongst the first ladies to have a competition on this historic course.

Unfortunately there were a few last minute call offs from both teams so we ended up lending Midlothian back a couple of their players.

However this meant that others enjoyed the opportunity of taking part in the match. Well done to the ladies sporting the purple and representing SVLGA for the first time. Roz Purdom, Sue Penman, Sal Shepherd, Louise Graham and wait for it, Ellie Whyte! They were partnered by stalwarts, Frances Millar, Carol Whyte, Sheena Wood, Liz Stewart and Lesley Lloyd.

Congratulations to Midlothian County ladies who won the match 3-2, we look forward to playing again next year.

Thanks must go to Bruntsfield Links Golf Club for their wonderful hospitality and to Louise Fraser, Captain of MLCGA for organising such an enjoyable match.
