Stacey Lewis is back in the Winner's Circle as your 2020 Ladies Scottish Champion

Stacy Lewis holed a long birdie putt to see off three rivals at the first playoff hole and win the Ladies Scottish Open on Sunday, giving the American a first title in nearly three years and a confidence boost ahead of the British Open.

The 35-year-old Lewis took a swig of champagne beside the 18th green after securing a 13th victory on the LPGA Tour — and first since the birth of her first child, Chesnee, in October 2018

The former top-ranked Lewis started the final round a stroke off the lead held by Azahara Muñoz, and shot 1-over 72 to join Muñoz (73), Cheyenne Knight (70) and Emily Kristine Pedersen (68) in a four-way playoff at the Renaissance Club.

The approach shots of Muñoz and Pedersen didn't make it onto the green, and they rolled putts up to near the hole.

Lewis made her birdie putt from about 20 feet, which went slightly left to right, leaving compatriot Knight a putt of around 15 feet to take the playoff back down the 18th. Knight's putt slid by the right side of the cup.

West of Scotland's Kylie Henry had another good round today (3 under par)to finish tied in 12th place on 1 under.

Lewis will look to follow up this win on the links with another at Royal Troon next week, when the first women's major of a reshaped golfing year takes place. Kylie Henry cards a 69 on day 3 of the Scottish Open

Stacy Lewis reckons The Renaissance Club has a “major feel” to it this week. So, too, does the leaderboard in the $1.5 million Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open. Spaniard Azahara Munoz is out in front heading into the final round but has some big guns breathing down her neck at the East Lothian venue.

Lewis, a Women’s Open winner at St Andrews in 2013, is just one shot back. Lydia Ko, a two-time major champion, is also lurking ominously, as is Danielle Kang, who is bidding for a third Sunday success on the trot after back-to-back wins in Ohio following the LPGA Tour’s restart after the Covid-19 lockdown.

Helped by knocking in a 30-footer for an eagle-2 at the 13th, West of Scotland’s Kylie Henry carded a 69 for two-over to sit in a tie for 24th, giving her a chance to secure one of the 21 spots up for grabs in this week’s AIG Women’s Open at Royal Troon. Gemma Dryburgh, who is already in that field, and Michele Thomson are on four-over and 13-over respectively.

Day 2 of the Scottish Ladies Open - 3 Scots make the cut

At the halfway stage of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open, Spain’s Azahara Munoz and American major winner Stacy Lewis lead by one stroke from America’s Jennifer Song and an international chasing pack at five-under-par.

On a benign day by links standards, Renaissance Golf Club appeared to offer up more favorable weather conditions for the field, but these were combatted by a few more difficult pins as well the well documented thick rough, which ensured that only 15 players broke par. As it stands, only 12 players are under par for the tournament.

Three of the seven Scottish players competing this week made the cut with Gemma Dryburgh highest placed heading into the weekend in T35 on 2-over-par. Kylie Henry 4 over par and Michele Thomson 5 over par sit in T53 and T62 respectively.

Michele had a great 2 under par 69 today to add to her 78 yesterday to just make the cut

70 players made the halfway cut at five-over-par.

2020 SCOTTISH OPEN AT THE RENAISSANCE CLUB NORTH BERWICK

The 2020 Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open is on track to take place next month, Aug 13 – 16 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, marking a return of professional women’s golf to Scotland for the first time since Europe’s remarkable triumph in the 2019 Solheim Cup last September.

The tournament is set to go ahead without spectators as a made for TV event following close consultation and collaboration with the Scottish Government, Aberdeen Standard Investments, VisitScotland, the LPGA and the LET, fully adhering to internationally recognised COVID-19 protocol and subject to necessary formal approvals of athlete quarantine exemptions.

The decision to move forward with the 2020 Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open has been taken only once organisers and stakeholders could ensure delivery of an event with all relevant safeguarding and protocols in place.

The tournament has a robust operational plan, which has been established with medical and health and safety specialists to make sure that all appropriate measures are in place that meet the high standards required by the Scottish Government as well as adhering to all WHO guidelines.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, an Aberdeen Standard Investments ambassador, said: “We are all happy to hear that women’s golf will be getting back underway in Scotland and especially grateful to Aberdeen Standard Investments and VisitScotland for working so hard to make this happen and putting all the necessary COVID-19 related practices in place and for being so supportive of the women’s tours.”
The victorious 2019 Solheim Cup Captain continued, “With men’s professional golf back playing, it is important that we are able to follow suit, so this is really excellent news for the women’s game and I am delighted to be preparing for my national open in just over a month’s time.”

Jill Maxwell of Aberdeen Standard Investments added, “The decision to proceed with the tournament as lockdown measures begin to ease has not been taken lightly. The safety and wellbeing of everyone onsite is the top priority and as title sponsor, Aberdeen Standard Investments will remain part of ongoing discussions with the event organisers to monitor the situation and react accordingly should the situation change. We felt it important to honour our commitment to this event to help provide a vital boost to Scotland’s events sector. We want to show our support through tournament initiatives that will help local communities and charities and lastly our continued involvement in the LSO for a 12th year underpins our commitment to equality by supporting women’s sport. We hope this news brings some joy back to sports fans who will be able to tune in on TV and various social channels.”

Mi Jung Hur claims Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open crown

From the  Ladies European Tour Website

Mi Jung Hur fired a five-under-par 66 – the joint lowest round of the day – in wet conditions to earn a four-stroke victory in the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.
The 29-year-old South Korean, who led by two at the halfway stage of the tournament after a nine-under-par 62, came from a stroke back entering the final round to win on 20-under-par.
Despite having set the tournament scoring record after two rounds, and having earned a runner-up finish in the event at Dundonald two years ago, she revealed that she had never previously been a fan of links golf.
“Actually, I don’t like links courses, but after this week, I love them,” said Hur, whose neon yellow waterproofs were decorated with the slogan “Win at all costs.”
Hur claimed her first LPGA Tour victory as a rookie in 2009 and then another five years ago in 2014. Five years had passed since her last title and this was her first victory as a married woman, after her wedding last year. She thanked her Scottish caddie, Gary Marshall, for helping to keep her clubs and balls dry and for encouragement throughout the severe and changeable conditions over the four days.
“On the first day, I made a birdie and then two bogeys. Then he told me on the fourth hole, come on MJ, you can win this. He said that again today again on the fourth tee after I’d just made a three-putt, so that helped a lot.”
Hur began her final round with a bogey on the third hole and trailed after eight holes, but made her first birdie of the day on the par-3 ninth, sinking a putt from six feet, to enter a four-way tie for the lead.
After making her fourth straight birdie putt, from around nine yards, on the par-5 12th hole, the Texas-based professional felt that she could win the tournament.
She made another great putt from five feet on the 16th to take a three stroke advantage and then polished off the round with her sixth birdie of the day on 18.
The US Women’s Open champion Jeongeun Lee6 (70) and third-round leader Moriya Jutanugarn (71) tied for second position on 16-under, with the 2017 champion Mi Hyang Lee a stroke back in fourth place and the 2018 winner Ariya Jutanugarn two shots further adrift in fifth.

With a tie for sixth, alongside Minjee Lee and Elizabeth Szokol, Anne Van Dam moved up to second on the LET Solheim Cup points list, while Carly Booth tied for ninth and won the Douglas Lowe Memorial Trophy as the top performing Scot in the tournament, after a final round of level par 71.

After a disastrous 3rd round yesterday Kylie Hendry equalled the best score of the day by firing a 5 under par 66. It was the turn of Pamela Pretswell Asher to have the bad round today

Following on from Solheim Cup Sunday, the excitement continues with the announcement of the full European Solheim Cup team tomorrow.

Carly Booth leading Scot at Ladies Scottish Open as Dame Laura has a Hole in One

Dame Laura Davies made a hole-in-one at the 152-yard fifth using a pitching wedge in the second round of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club this morning and signed for an incredible three-under-par 68, just before play was suspended due to unplayable conditions at 13.04.
Davies said it was the second best round of her 34-year career, due to the ‘horrific’ conditions, with heavy rain and strong winds, gusting at 35 miles per hour.
Davies said it was her best round since the 1996 Canadian Open, which she won on a tree-lined course in a gale.
When play was suspended, the European Solheim Cup vice-captain tied for 27th position on a 36 hole total of two-under-par, two strokes behind the clubhouse leader, Hyo Joo Kim, with Sarah Schmelzel and Caroline Hedwall having finished on three-under-par. Linda Wessberg also shot a three-under-par 68 this morning for the joint lowest round of the day so far. She was tied for 57th on par and just inside the cut line when play was suspended.
The first round leaders Mi Hyang Lee and Anne Van Dam had only just teed off, while joint overnight leader Jane Park had yet to start.
After persistent rain all morning, a shard of light appeared through the clouds at around 2.30pm and conditions appeared to be drying up.
Play resumed at 3.25pm after a 2 hour, 21 minute delay and the weather completely changed for the afternoon side of the draw.
Play was yet again suspended later in the day with Mi Jung Hur (Korea) completing her second round of 62 to be in the lead at 14 under par.

SCOTTISH PLAYERS
Carly Booth managed to complete her round and was the leading scot in the Clubhouse on 5 under par.

HOWLING WIND AT GULLANE ON DAY 3 BLOWS A FEW OFF COURSE !!

Kelsey MacDonald and caddy - courtesy of the European Tour
A howling wind proved to be a stiff challenge for the leaders on day three of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open, but Ariya Jutanugarn and Amy Yang refused to be blown off course.
After two days of glorious sunshine at Gullane, the third day was played in very different conditions: around 10 degrees cooler and in a near gale.
Overnight leader Tiffany Joh, who had started at 13-under, made a birdie at the second, but struggled to a nine-over 80.
The pack will be chasing two of the most prolific winners in the field, who shot matching rounds of two-over 73 to share the lead on eight-under at 205

Kelsey MacDonald and Kylie Henry, the two Scots left standing, both shot level-par 71s to sit level-par and one-over respectively.
