EUROPEAN LADIES' TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Scotland's Hannah Darling was the star of Day 1 at the European Ladies' Team Championship. A round of 68 (-5) at Royal County Down was two shots lower than any other player in the 114-strong field. "I did quite a lot of things well out there today" said Darling after her round. "The conditions were tough and the course is quite demanding in places so I just had to be sensible." 

 

Darling's round helped Scotland into 2nd position in the stroke play qualifying, setting the team up with an excellent chance of qualifying for Flight A.

Team Sweden, looking for a fourth straight victory in the event, currently find themselves in fifth position on +13. The team is under-practiced on the course compared to the rest of the field however, their golf clubs got stuck at Amsterdam airport during their trip to Northern Ireland, costing them valuable practice time.

 

The Czech Republic are currently sitting in first place. Five scores lower than 75 (+2) put the team on a total +1, eight shots clear of Scotland. Denmark and England, both with totals of +10, are in third and fourth positions respectively.

EUROPEAN LADIES' TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The European Ladies’ Team Championship will be contested by 19 teams at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. Sweden will look for a fourth straight victory in the event, which would be a record for any nation in all 62 years of European Team Championship history   

The 2021 European Team Championships are set to take place at five different venues in the coming week from 6 to 10 July.

 

474 golfers representing 30 countries and 79 different teams will compete for six separate European titles this year.

 

Five days of competition await the players. Two rounds of stroke play qualifying followed by three rounds of match play will decide who takes home the 2021 European medals.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Each team is made up of six players. Over Day’s 1 & 2 all players complete two individual stroke play rounds. The team’s five best scores out of six from each day count towards their stroke play qualifying totals.

 

Based on finishing position in the stroke play qualifying, the top eight teams from each championship qualify for the medal-contention Flight A bracket.

 

The format for the three remaining competition days is match play. Nations go head-to-head, with two foursomes matches in the morning and five singles matches in the afternoon.

The day started off quite exciting and Midlothian players were all full of enthusiasm. Match 1 got underway against Fife who were defending their title and it all became very tense out there as most of our players if not all were all square or down against their opponents.  Team Midlothian dug deep, hung in there and fought well into the back 9. The score line was changing in favour but only slightly. We ended up triumphing in 4 games against Fife with an amazing half at the 18th going via the trees and 3 ‘good’ losses going all the way to the 17th which gave us a satisfying 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

East Lothian Versus Stirling & Clackmannan in Match 2. If East Lothian was to win 5-3, The tournament office were onto the big countback which they had been preparing for updating their stats every day. It was tight most of the way for the majority of their games. Stirling & Clackmannan came through in the end with a 4 1/2 – 3 1/2 win.

Match 2 result today meant Midlothian were out right winners on 5 match points (14 game points). Second was East Lothian 3 match points (12.5 game points), 3rd was Stirling & Clackmannan 3 match points (11 game points) and fourth Fife on 1 match point (10 1/2 game points).

AUSTRALIAN KIRSTEN RUDGELY WINS THE 2021 HELEN HOLM TROPHY - 8 Scots in top 20

Kirsten Rudgeley carded a closing six under par 66 to storm through the field and become the first Australian to claim the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open title.

Rudgeley, from Perth, Western Australia, started the final round at Royal Troon Portland Course four shots off the pace set by Scotland’s Hannah Darling but she quickly got in her stride with birdies on the third and fifth before vaulting into the lead with further birdies at the 11th, 15th and 16th.

A sixth birdie of the day on the 18th saw her complete a bogey-free round and in the end her 12 under par 204 aggregate was enough to claim a one shot victory over Darling and 2019 Women’s Amateur champion Emily Toy from England.

It also meant that Scotland’s long victory drought in this championship was extended by another year.

It is now some 19 years since Heather Stirling became the last Scot to lift the Helen Holm trophy all the way back in 2002.

Local Royal Troon member Hazel MacGarvie also posted a 70 to finish in fifth place on eight under par while Scottish Women’s Amateur champion Chloe Goadby carded a 74 to drop from second to sixth.

Also of note was Clara Young (North Berwick) , Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) and Lorna McClymont (Milngavie) who finished in 8th, 10th and 11th place respectively.

HANNAH DARLING LEADS BY ONE AFTER DAY 2 OF THE HELEN HOLM TROPHY

 Scotland’s Hannah Darling holds a slender one shot lead over compatriot Chloe Goadby heading into the final round of the 2021 Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open at Royal Troon Portland Course.

17-year-old Darling carded a second successive five under par 67 to finish the day on ten under par 134 but a couple of hours later was nearly caught by new Scottish Women’s Amateur champion Goadby who birdied the last for the second day in a row to post her own 67 and go into the final round on 135. 

Darling started the day with a dropped shot at the 458-yard par four first hole but then birdied the second, sixth and ninth to go out in 33 before carding four birdies and a bogey coming home to give herself a great chance of becoming the first Scot to lift the trophy since Heather Stirling all the way back in 2002.  

“It was good out there,” said the in-form Darling, a two-time Scottish Girls’ champion who won the Recent St Rule Trophy at St Andrews and then reached the semi-finals at both the Scottish Women’s Amateur and the Women’s Amateur Championship. 

Goadby will also be confident she can end Scotland’s long winless drought after beating Darling on the way to claiming her first Scottish Women’s title at the start of this month at Gullane.

The former Stirling University student stormed home with five birdies in her last seven holes to add a 67 to her opening 68 and believes she is in great shape to claim a rare Scottish double. 

MacGarvie will not be short of local support after carding a 68 while Duncan eagled the last on her way to posting a two under par 70.

The cut fell at eleven over par 155 with 60 players progressing to the final round tomorrow.

GILLIAN KYLE IS IN TOP FORM IN THE RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY MEDAL OVER KILMACOLM

It was hot, hot, hot yesterday at the Renfrewshire County June Medal at Kilmacolm GC and so were the scores, with quite a bit of run on the ball and barely a breeze, quite a number of the 44 competitors took advantage of the conditions and played under their handicap. Whilst others enjoyed the fantastic views of the countryside and on too many occasions visited the rough!

Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) -- semi finalist last week at Aberdour in the Scottish Women's Seniors Championship continued her good form by having the best scratch score of the day with a one over par 73.

Hannah Darling Takes an Early Lead on a Great Day for the Scots at Troon

Scotland’s Hannah Darling holds a one-shot lead over three of her compatriots after a dramatic first round of the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open at Royal Troon Portland Course.

The GB & I Curtis Cup squad member from Broomieknowe carded a five under par 67 to overhaul new British champion, Louise Duncan, Scottish Women’s Amateur Champion Chloe Goadby and Jasmine MacKintosh from Murcar Links at the top of the leaderboard near the end of an opening day during which the sun shone throughout and no less than 25 players beat or matched par.

It was also a good day for local Royal Troon member Hazel MacGarvie who carded a three under par 69 to share fifth place with Northern Ireland’s Jessica Ross and England’s Rosie Belsham.

On a fine day for the Scots Clara Young, Tara Mactaggart and Shannon McWilliam all go into the second round in a share of eleventh place on 71 

Louise Duncan has had little time to relax since winning the Women’s Amateur title at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and admitted to being a bit anxious about teeing up for the first time as the British champion.

She was two -over par after four holes but soon got into her stride and birdies at the eighth, 10th, 11th 12th, 16th and 18th saw her clinch the early clubhouse lead.

LARGS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS DAY: RESULTS

Largs Golf Club had their Championship Finals day yesterday with the weather absolutely perfect and the course in fabulous condition.

Ladies Club Championship:

Jennifer Linklater beat Jean Capes 5&4

Jenny won her 8th title and 3rd in a row with victory over Jean. After 9 holes there was only 1 hole in it and then Jenny pulled away in the back 9 with some excellent golf.

Ladies Bronze Bucket Championship:

CHRISTINE GRIBBIN beat Linda Taylor 2&1

A really good match played in a great spirit saw Christine defeat Linda at the 17th hole. A very close game all the way through although Christine was never behind.

RLCGA Junior Jennifer Lynagh had a great day at Caldwell yesterday to round off a great week of superb golf golf by becoming the first girl to win the Junior Club Championship in the clubs history.

Douglas Park Open Day Tri Am Success

The 2021 Douglas Park Ladies’ Open Day was held on Friday 25th June in sunshine and mostly dry conditions. 

Douglas Park was host to a total of 141 ladies in 47 teams of 3. The overall winners were a team from Milngavie with a great score of 81 points. 

Well done to all the ladies who won prizes. 

This day does not happen by itself and we would like to thank: 

Anne Fergusson for her support on the day and keeping us right with the scorecards. 

Our very smart and sociable gentlemen starters: Ian Macdougall, Iain Fergusson, George Roberts, George Simmons and Stephen Murray, who kept the tee going extremely smoothly! 

Thanks also to the greenkeeping staff for presenting our course in great condition, especially ensuring the works at the front of the clubhouse were neat and tidy. 

Lisa Cuthbert and her team had a very early start to be ready to offer the first competitors a bacon roll and a cup of tea, as well as catering during a full day for our many guests.

Alison Davidson on golfing friendships meaning more than titles

Until a fortnight ago, Alison Davidson was the last Scottish player to have been crowned as the R&A Women’s Amateur champion, having landed the prize at Cruden Bay in 1994.

Only time will tell what lies ahead in the game for Louise Duncan after she ended Scotland’s drought in the event, but Davidson has shown that satisfaction can be found by staying in the amateur ranks.

The Stirling woman never even gave turning professional consideration at the height of a career that also saw her win four points out of four in a Curtis Cup and insists she has no regrets whatsoever.

How did you feel when West Kilbride’s Louise Duncan became the first Scot since then to claim the title with her recent win at Kilmarnock (Barassie)?

AD: It was nice to have that title of being the last Scot to win the British Amateur, but it was time someone else won it and I am absolutely thrilled for Louise. I think Scottish golf is in a great place right now and hopefully Louise can move on and, fingers crossed, we can have some Scots in the Curtis Cup later this year, if it goes ahead. Twenty-four years is a long time and it had to happen at some point, though I am surprised it took so long (laughing).

You might already have partly answered this one, but sum what golf has meant for you?

AD: Mainly it’s a game that I love. Even though I don’t play as much competitively now as I did, I still go out and give it my best shot every time I go out. I’m very passionate about golf and one of the main things I love about golf is the friendships I’ve made. All my good friends are golfers and I still follow all the girls I used to play international golf with. In my first Home Internationals, my foursomes partner was Catriona Matthew and I still follow their careers. I just think it’s a fantastic game for friendships.

Cathy Skinner has a Hole In One at Balmore Open Day

KAREN FERGUSON - SNEDDEN IS THE 2021 SCOTTISH SENIORS CHAMPION

Karen Ferguson-Snedden won the Scottish Senior Women’s Match Play Championship for the first time when she beat Iona McKean 2 & 1 in a tense final at a windswept Aberdour.

The Mortonhall player needed to go all the way to the 20th hole before beating East Renfrewshire’s Gillian Kyle in the semi-final and in the final she had to work almost as hard against an opponent who was frequently outgunned off the tee but never more than a hole behind before losing the 17th green.

McKean won the opening hole but lost the fourth to go back to all square. The Ladybank player regained the initiative with a win on the fifth and still held that slender advantage before Ferguson-Snedden won both the 12th and 13th. She went further ahead with another win on the 16th before closing out the match with a halve on the 17th.

“It was tough but I’m delighted,” admitted the new champion who had started the Match Play Championship as second seed after finishing runner-up to Elaine Moffat in the 36-hole Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship.

“I’m also a bit surprised about how well I’ve done. “I was hoping to get into the match play and have a run but I didn’t really think I’d be able to get to the final and win. 

“Iona is pretty incredible,” she added. “I had a big length advantage off the tee but she doesn’t do a lot wrong, chips it close and sinks putts. Great credit to her. She was very tough to beat.”

Earlier in the day, McKean showed just how doughty a competitor she is by ending Moffat’s lengthy three-year reign as Senior Women’s Match Play champion when she came from two down after 11 holes to claim a 2 & 1 win. That reign had begun when Moffat took the title at Prestwick St Nicholas in 2018 and was extended the following year with a successful defence at Edzell. The 2020 championship was cancelled because of the Covid pandemic.

The concurrent net competition was won by Gullane’s Sarah Ledingham who beat Elaine MacGregor 4 & 2 in the final.

Earlier in the day, Ledingham reached the final with a two-hole victory over Comiston’s Jaci Moriarty while MacGregor beat Turnhouse’s Morag Wardrop on the 18th hole.  

“I was very surprised to get to the final,” Ledingham admitted after her victory over MacGregor. “I’ve had a fantastic week here at Aberdour. It’s my first time playing in the Scottish Seniors so I’m delighted to come here and become the net winner.

“I’ve met a lot of new people, I’ve met people I’ve known a long, long time, it’s been super and Aberdour’s been great.

Today was tough, it was very windy, very blustery. When we teed off at eight this morning it was very calm. It was like that for the first four or five holes but then the wind picked up and it became very tricky. The tees are all off the whites this week, and I’m not a particularly long hitter, so coming back into the wind from the 12th was quite hard work for me.

“I just kept my head down and got on with it.”
