COUNTY FINALS AT KILMACOLM - DAY 2 - RENFREWSHIRE WIN AND MIDLOTHIAN STAGE A COMEBACK AGAINST ABERDEENSHIRE

Renfrewshire's Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart

SOME PHOTOS FROM TODAY

Renfrewshire are odds-on favourites to retain the Scottish Women's County Championship at Kilmacolm after beating Dumfries-shire 6.5-2.5 today (Saturday) while their main rivals, Aberdeenshire, leading by 2pt after the foursomes, nosedived in the singles and lost 5.5-3.5 to Midlothian.

To win the title Aberdeenshire would need to win their final match on Sunday, against Renfrewshire, by a big-enough margin to cancel out the title-holder's commanding "goal difference" of 12-6 compared with Aberdeen's 9.5-8.5

Renfrewshire's stalwarts Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart  won their foursomes match comfortably in the morning and both picked up a point each in the afternoon. County Champion Eilidh Briggs won all her matches today with Jennifer Rankine picking up a point and a half.

Aberdeenshire's collapse in the singles - which they lost 5-1 - started with a shock 6 and 5 defeat for Curtis Cup player Shannon McWilliam from Aboyne at the hands of Karen Ferguson-Snedden who was three up after 10 holes.

Defending champions Renfrewshire were overpowered in the foursomes by Midlothian who led 2.5-0.5 at lunch-time on Day 1 of the County Finals at Kilmacolm.
However with the help of County Champion Eilidh Briggs who had been unable to play in the morning due to work commitments -  the team bounced back off the ropes to win five of the six afternoon singles for an overall 5.5 - 3.5 victory - a remarkable recovery -- with wins also by Megan Briggs, Jennifer Rankine, Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart

Aberdeenshire, the Northern Division champions, took their first step towards the Scottish women's County championship by beating Dumfries-shire 6-3
Aberdeenshire built up a useful 2pt lead at the end of the morning foursomes and edged the afternoon singles 3.5-2.5.

JENNIFER RANKINE WINS HAGGS CASTLE LADIES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

This year's rain-delayed Haggs Castle Ladies Championship Final was played last Saturday (8th).

The match was contested by Laura McGeachy and Jennifer Rankine who between them had won the previous four titles.

Both ladies played some great golf before Jennifer pulled way to win.

Congratulations to both players for making the final and thanks to Past Captain, Audrey Sturgess for refereeing.

RENFREWSHIRES COUNTY TRI-AM OVER RALSTON - WINNING TEAM

Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association held their Tri-am Competition over Ralston GC today.

Ralston's 18th green and Clubhouse

Surprisingly the rain stayed off for the whole competition but it was a very blustery day and stabilisers would have been handy on the 1st green. Wind aside, the course was in excellent condition and is always a favourite with the RLCGA members.

Played as a betterball stableford with two scores counting at each hole it turned into a very closely fought competition with the winning team with a score of 73 points being Lorna Howie (Whitecraigs), Julie Scott (Troon Welbeck) and Maureen Mitchell (Old Ranfurly).

Winning Tri-am Team (l to r) Julie Scott, Maureen Mitchell and Lorna Howie

Four teams then tied with 72 points with second place with a better inward half going to the team comprising of Fiona Armour (Renfrew), Lilias Snodgrass (Ranfurly Castle) and Pam Harvey (Cowglen).

Second Placed Team (l to r) Pam Harvey, Lilias Snodgrass and Fiona Armour

The third placed team was Chris Fowler (Cowglen), Anita McMillan (Erskine) and Lyn Black (Eastwood).

Congratulations to the winning team and sad to say that the Tri-am was the last of the 2018 County monthly competitions but it's always good to finish with a fun event.

However, don't put your golf clubs away yet because booking via HDID or the Members Hub is open until 30th September 2018 for the 2018-19 RLCGA Winter Foursomes. The first round in this knockout competition has to be played by the 13th November.

RENFREWSHIRE DEFEND THE COUNTY TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP AT KILMACOLM GOLF CLUB

From Scottish Golf

Teams of the country’s top women’s county players from Aberdeenshire, Dumfriesshire, Renfrewshire and Midlothian will descend on Kilmacolm this Friday (14 September) for the chance to be crowned 2018 Scottish Women’s County Champions.
In the Scottish Golf organised event, first played in 1909, teams of eight players from the four winning counties from this year’s inter-county matches will contest three days of round-robin match play with the winners confirmed on Sunday.
Renfrewshire will be looking to defend the title they won at Glenbervie with a team featuring two local Kilmacolm players, Megan and Eilidh Briggs. However with 2018 Curtis Cup player Shannon McWilliam (Aberdeenshire), ex-professional Corisande Lee (Dumfriesshire) and Kate McIntosh in the Midlothian team amongst others in attendance, competition for honours will be strong again this year.
Fraser Munro, Head of Events at Scottish Golf, said: “The County Finals are an excellent showcase for women’s golf in Scotland and we look forward to another exciting event. With Renfrewshire winning last year, Dumfriesshire in 2016 and Angus in 2015, it’s all to play for this week.
“We would like to thank our hosts Kilmacolm and wish all teams every success. We hope all players enjoy the course and we look forward to seeing some exciting matches contested in a great spirit over the next few days.”
Once the event gets underway, live scoring will be available at:  SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
