RLCGA LAUNCHES A NEW WEBSITE AND CAROLFELLGOLF BLOG COMES TO AN END

Dear CarolFellGolf Readers,

I am delighted to announce that Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association Website (RLCGA) which I launched 19 years ago in 2003 and has had various versions since that time has a NEW WEBSITE.

Fiona Armour (Whitecraigs and RLCGA Past Results Secretary)  has just launched it using the Scottish Golf Venue Management System (VMS) which is now being used for its membership and for running the County Competitions. Fiona has done a great job  and the website the address stays the same --- https://www.rlcga.co.uk.         READ MORE

She has also designed and kept many of the Past Memories with image links and I thank her -- they are not lost in the void yet !! ---Go to CLUB LINK  --  HISTORY AND ARCHIVES

I  had also  been reporting on womens, girls and student golf since April 2006 on this blog. -- plus seniors golf on the WestVets blog until 2021,  Ranfurly Castle Ladies Blog 2007 - 2019  -- and  also an editor for KirkwoodGolf from 2016 -2018.

The days of website reporting such as this blog are numbered. - Nowadays there are social media apps on phones and tablets (SG APP, TWITTER, FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM) and many people are kept up to date with golf news on a daily basis. Also this can be shared and posted instantly with their friends without the need for a dedicated blog to provide the service.

I would like to thank Colin Farquharson for his great input before his retirement and for sharing many Ladies Golf News articles written by himself - and also to Gillian Kirkwood for her help in getting me started all those years ago.  Both of them made fantastic contributions both in content and support. Now without that support from them and having to find feeds myself for the blog -- it is time for me to take a big step back.

Counties Centenary Match 2009

This West of Scotland blog and beyond included many posts from various Scottish Counties but mainly Ayrshire, D&A, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire and many memories can be found in the search link --

 West of Scotland Greenlees Trophies

I am delighted to announce that Sara Bottomley is the new West of Scotland Greenlees Secretary
Currently Sara and I  are looking to set up a dedicated Greenlees Blog for all the results to sit on for the future. Meantime the GREENLEES FIXTURES AND RESULTS LINK are still on this blog.

During that time I have made very many friends and have always been encouraged by the knowledgeable readership. Thank you for your support over the years.

I do hope everyone continues to ENJOY THEIR GOLF as it is most certainly a great game and even when you have a bad day you can laugh and enjoy the friendship we have as you can see from a recent get together at my Home Club Douglas Park and the above photo for 2009 !!

Finally many thanks go to RLCGA for their very kind words on their new Website --- Click Here

It is lovely to see so many familiar faces from matches or from the 80th Anniversary celebration which we hosted just a couple of months ago.

Today’s weather is certainly better for a lunch than playing golf.

East Ren will be celebrating our centenary next year and you will have noticed that preparations are well underway to freshen up the clubhouse. Apologies if you can detect the aroma of fresh paint, although on the upside it probably means you don’t have COVID!

Congratulation to the winning teams and I hope that everyone enjoys their lunch and catching up with friends old and new."

On Tuesday 31st of August, East Renfrewshire Golf Club was delighted to host the Tri-am event and lunch to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the West of Scotland Ladies Inter Club Leagues that compete for the Greenlees Trophy.

72 ladies from 25 different golf clubs in the West of Scotland were represented, teams ideally having a player from each of the three divisions.

The weather was calm and mild, with the sun appearing intermittently, resulting in almost perfect playing conditions. The golf course was at its best, having recovered its lushness after the long dry month of July.

After their round, ladies enjoyed a lovely lunch in the club lounge which had been decorated with balloons and bunting and were able to chat and catch up with old friends

Lady Captain, Carole Spy from East Renfrewshire Golf Club spoke before the Prize giving and welcomed everyone, expressing her hope that they had all enjoyed their day. She gave an insight into East Renfrewshire Golf Club’s history of involvement in the Greenlees Trophy leagues. CLICK ON THIS LINK FOR THE -------> VIDEO OF PRESENTATION    or watch at end of post

Carole Spy said --

I hope you have all enjoyed playing East Ren in perfect golfing conditions and had fun with the bendy driver and left-handed putter on 18th. Watching on, there certainly seemed to be a lot of laughter, there were even several offers to buy the putter

Val Crawford who organised today’s events has left information leaflets on the history of the Greenlees for you. What you probably won’t know is East Ren’s involvement.

We were invited to take part in the Greenlees Trophy in 1952. It took us four years to win the second division and were then promoted to division one, where we stayed until ’65. The ladies of the day were obviously not satisfied with the demotion and promptly won Division two in ‘66 followed by Division one in ‘67 where the team remained until 1976.

There was more success in winning division 2 in 1978. It’s fair to say that since those ‘glory days’ East Ren has had experience of all 3 divisions taking advantage of playing at a variety of great courses over the years.

No matter which division a team is playing in or wither a player is number one or number 9 or even 7, when we represent our clubs in a Greenlees match, we do it with pride and great determination to get that point for our club.

Thank you, ladies, for your competitive spirit and for taking part in the 80th year celebration of Greenlees golf.

Prizes were then awarded by Carole, with Val Crawford, the club’s Greenlees Secretary announcing the various winners.

A final vote of thanks was given by Maureen Mitchell, West of Scotland Greenlees Convenor.

Prizes were awarded to

GREENLEES STALWART WILLEEN MCCALLUM HAS DIED

Willeen McCallum

It is with great saddness that I have to announce the death of Willeen McCallum who ran the Greenlees league, single handed for 19 years. Her organisational skills, friendly manner and sense of humour stood her in good stead and we all owed her a great debt of gratitude.

In the her time all the Greenlees results were collated manually and then put in the Results Section of the Glasgow Herald

I don’t think anyone realised how much time and effort Willeen spent making sure that the league ran smoothly through the summers and then followed this up with the presentation lunches and December fixture meetings.

As well as the general day to day running of the league, proposals from clubs had to be dealt with as well as any complaints from clubs - on the whole the latter were not numerous."
"But it all added up to responsibility of running the league."

In her time of office the 50th anniversary took place and she organised a Greenlees Jamboree over Troon Portland. A highly successful day. 3 ball best ball competition with 60 competitors. Lunch provided for some 100 people. -- No mean feat of organisation

Willeen, Anne and Fiona
75th Anniversary Celebration at Cathcart Castle

She then attended the 75th Anniversary Match at Cathcart Castle in 2015  she is seen in the photo with her successor Fiona Roger and Secretary at the time of the 75th Anniversary Anne Dunn

On her retrial in 2008 she said that the highlight of her 20 years in office was the meeting of Mrs Greenlees in 1990 at the 50th Anniversary at Troon. Mrs Greenlees got married at aged 17, had 2 children by the age of 20 and started her golfing career at Prestwick St.Nicholas and died in 1994 aged 94

Willeen on the other hand started her golfing career at Ranfurly Castle and on her retiral she just managesd to squeeze in at no 9 in the Whitecraigs Greenlees Team..

Willeen was such a character and many of her antics came to the fore as you will see in the video below in 2007 at Prestwick St Nicholas at the Greenlees Presentation Lunch.

She also was a past member of Renfrewshire Ladies'  County Golf Assoiation and member of Whitecraigs GC   -- She will be sorely missed by many

GREENLEES TROPHY 80TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT EAST RENFREWSHIRE POSTPONED TO 2021

As you are all aware, life is not normal at the moment so it is with regret that I am writing to say that after discussion with Valerie Crawford, East Renfrewshire Greenlees’ Secretary, we have decided to call off our Anniversary Lunch on 1st September.
.

We feel that we cannot make plans with any certainty either about catering arrangements or clubhouse facilities so East Renfrewshire would rather we abandoned our plans for this year.

However, they are willing to hold the event for us in 2021.
As we have not played any matches this year, we are not really celebrating 80 years of golf and next year now seems quite appropriate.
I hope you agree with us that under the current circumstances, this seems a sensible decision to take.

I am still hoping that one of you will volunteer to come onto our sub-committee to look at perhaps making some changes to our Constitution.

Hope you are all enjoying your golf.
Regards
Maureen Mitchell - West of Scotland Greenlees Secretary.

MEMORIES OF THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Also with all the fixtures cancelled this year it is hoped that the matches will be able to be played next year on the current days of the fixtures and only the dates needing to be changed  --- SEE 2020 FIXTURE LISTS

DEATH OF SHEILA GENDERS - FERENEZE, HAGGS CASTLE AND WEST KILBRIDE

Haggs Castle Greenlees Trophy Winners - 1998
Sheila 4th from left back row

Sheila in 2010
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of past RLCGA County member Sheila Genders.

Sheila whose home club was Fereneze was also a Greenlees Trophy Team member for Haggs Castle playing along side many good players in that team at that time -- Aileen Wilson, Dorothea Hastings, Jennifer Mack, Janice Gardner (Paterson), Brenda Livingstone, Irene Rose, Carol Smith, Audrey Sturgess, Jennifer Graham, Evi Park, Isobel Pearson - to name but a few.
She was also member of West Kilbride GC

WEST OF SCOTLAND GREENLEES MATCHES CANCELLED FOR 2020

Greenlees Trophies
After considering all the options and taking on board the Government’s directives, I regretfully feel that the Greenlees League matches should be cancelled this year.

As our clubhouses are closing down, we might have considered playing our games with no hospitality but this could become impractical if various players became ill at different times.
This could easily lead to you not being able to field a team.
At the moment there is not an end in sight so any thoughts about playing later in the season do not seem sensible.

However, as you are aware, it is the League’s 80thAnniversary this year. We have made plans for this celebration to be held at East Renfrewshire G. C. on Tuesday, 1st September.
I would like you to keep this date in your diaries with the great hope that things will greatly improve and we can enjoy the celebrations. Obviously, details cannot be finalised till later.

If things do improve later in the summer, perhaps you could consider playing some of your fixtures as ‘friendlies’

Please keep in touch if there is anything you would like to discuss or any news you would like to pass on.

Hopefully you will all stay safe and healthy.

GREENLEES TROPHY AND PRESENTATION LUNCH - CATHKIN BRAES ARE THE 2019 CHAMPIONS

Cathkin Braes celebrate

VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHS

The Annual Greenlees Lunch and prize giving  took place today, 17th October, at Douglas Park Golf Club.

This was attended by 57 ladies representing the 25 Clubs that are in the 3 Greenlees Divisions.

Old Ranfurly's  Maureen Taggart and Merope Dunlop helped to collect in the Greenlees Fees and Douglas Park had Lindsay Mclean and Gill Hendry welcoming the visitors to the club.

The tables were named after  the European Countries were represented in the victorious Solheim Cup and flower arrangements  were on all the tables courtesy of D Park's Jeannie Sutherland and Elaine Macewan

SCOTLAND: Lynda Smith, Denise Macnaughton, Maureen Mitchell and Carol Fell (Top Table)

SPAIN: Cathkin Braes, East Renfrewshire and Lanark
NETHERLANDS : Douglas Park, Troon and Old Ranfurly
FRANCE: Milngavie, Loudoun Gowf, Largs and Hilton Park
NORWAY: Erskine, Prestwick St Nicholas, Kilmacolm and Williamwood
SWEDEN: Ayr Bellisle, Kilmarnock Barassie, Cowglen and Cathcart Castle
GERMANY: Whitecraigs, Bothwell Castle and Cardross
ENGLAND: Haggs Castle, Ranfurly Castle, West Kilbride and Lenzie

West of Scotland Greenlees Secretary Maureen Mitchell (Old Ranfurly) opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone to the 79th Anniversary Year of the Greenlees Trophy.

She then introduced the top table guests - Denise Macnaughton , the Lady Captain of Douglas Park , who welcomed everyone on behalf of the Club and announced that if everyone checked behind their seat if they found a card they were invited to take home the flowers after the lunch.

She then introduced Carol Fell and said "Carol does a fantastic job keeping her website CaroFellGolf up to date which includes the  Greenlees Results which are available for all to see."

Next introduction was that of  Douglas Park's Past Greenlees Secretary Lynda Smith who was there instead of Susan Griffin (DP Greenlees Secretary) who was down in London. Susan had been the main organiser of all the the lunch arrangements and table plans and with the help of a few others enabled the event to be held.

Everyone then enjoyed an excellent lunch and much chat could be heard.

Prior to the presentation of Trophies Carol  Fell said a few words --
Elizabeth Fazzi and Aileen Wilson (Haggs Castle) - Runners Up Division 2

She welcomed Aileen Wilson from Haggs Castle who in her first Greenlees match played for Caldwell in the 1950's and over 60  years on still represented Haggs Castle this year -- a fantastic feat !!

She then read out a piece that past Secretary Fiona Roger had said in 2010  when it was the 70th Anniversary of the Greenlees --

In 1931 ten teams played in one division - Troon, Prestwick St. Nicholas, Douglas Park, Paisley, Drumpellier, Sandyhills, Kilmacolm, Ranfurly Castle, Cathkin Braes and Cardross. At the end of the season Troon and Prestwick St. Nicholas both had 62 points, they had a play off over Western Gailes and Prestwick St Nicholas won by one match. Mrs Greenlees, on behalf of her husband who donated the trophy, presented it to Prestwick.

Cathkin must have found it all too much because they withdrew after year one and were replaced by Balmore!!
Fiona also found a report written after the 1934 matches, I presume by the then Secretary. It read ----- matches have not been so keanly contested this year and certain clubs are lacking in team spirit. ----------. Our recent Secretaries would not dare to write such a report as with the usual close fought matches we have it is right up to the bitter end to decide our winners

Now a great Cathkin Braes Team has won the trophy for the  3rd time in 6 years — Many congratulations
Carol said "I am not too sad to be out of the 1st Division after 41 years (Ranfurly Castle - 40 ) and now playing for Douglas Park— I have enjoyed 100s and 100s of matches and love the camaraderie."

Willeen McCallum took over as West of Scotland Greenlees Secretary in 1988 and in 1990 - the 50th anniversary took place and she organised a Greenlees Jamboree over Troon Portland. A highly successful day. 3 ball best ball competition with 60 competitors. Lunch provided for some 100 people. -- No mean feat of organisation She then retired in 2007

In 2007 I was asked at that time by Isabel Crawford the then West of Scotland Secretary if I would be the Greenlees Secretary  — Results were no longer going into the Herald and a real difficulty in communicating the results.
It was also decided  to try to make a change of Secretary every 3 to 4 years  — I then set up the spreadsheets for the results and Fiona Roger then took over in 2008 - 2011 when the 70th Anniversary was in 2010.
Anne Dunn from 2012 - 2016 (75th Anniversary Tri Am was so well run at Cathcart Castle in 2015 ) and then Maureen  who will still be the Greenlees Secretary in 2020 when it will be the 80th Anniversary.

After that Maureen will then step down and we hope to fill the role of West of Scotland Greenlees Secretary for 2021 so that no-one is ever in the job for too long - Maureen is enjoying doing her roll and we thank her for all her hard work during the season.

Also it would be greatly appreciated that with the ever growing age of technology --  I am quite willing to help iron out any communication problems   -- and if anyone has ideas they would be most welcome.

East Renfrewshire GC is the next club to hold the lunch and perhaps be able hold an 80th Anniversary Celebration at their club  All help will be available.

Finally I would like to congratulate Donna Jackson from Troon who had a hole in one at the 4th hole at Williamwood against Julie Wilson  and Julie tells me the same thing happened to her last year when Lenzie’s Evelyn Crosbie had a hole in one at the same hole against her — Julie has been having a hard time  --
I was then also reminded that Lindsay Mclean (Douglas Park) had a hole in one against Cathkin Braes in their  final match and June Kerr (West Kilbride) also had one in a Greenlees match this year followed by an eagle I think !!!

Well done everyone

Finally, I like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Williamwood Annodata Team who are through to the semi-final in Spain of the Annodata UK Golf Club Classic with a hard fought 3-2 win against Kenwood Park Golf Club in a home match in the quarter finals. They are now off to play their semi finals at the Montecastillo Resort near Cadiz in Spain on 20th and 21st November.

Maureen then informed everyone that the Greenlees AGM would be on Tuesday 19th November at Old Ranfurly -- The exchanging of dates for matches would be first at 10:15 am with the AGM at 11am.

Maureen then invited the Captain Denise to present the trophies to the winning teams - see video. -
Bothwell Castle, Whitecraigs, Troon and Cathkin representatives all said a few words  -- Apologies to Bothwell Castle -- I missed hitting the record button  - It was an excellent speech !!

Division 3 was won by Bothwell Castle, Runners up Hilton Park.
Whitecraigs winners of Division 2 and runners up Haggs Castle.

The runners up in Division 1 were Troon who were  beaten by the overall winners - Cathkin Braes
