Pamela Pretswell is the West of Scotland Champion

Pamela Pretswell -- Click to enlarge
Bothwell Castle’s Pamela Pretswell lived up to her rating as the backmarker in the West of Scotland women’s amateur championship at Prestwick today.
The +2 player, who won the Swiss women’s open amateur title last summer, won by four strokes with a pair of 74s, against the CSS of 76 and 77, for a total of 148 in very windy and cold but mainly dry weather.
With no university exams clashing this year, Pamela will make her debut this month in the Scottish women's championship at Southerness ... and on this form she must be one of the favourites.
Runner-up at Prestwick on 152 with scores of 79 and 73 was former Scotland international Sara Bishop (Windyhill).
Pretswell, Susan Wood and Lesley Lloyd won the County Shield for Lanarkshire, while Renfrewshire (Eilidh Briggs, Alyson McKechin and Natasha Qayum) won the new Junior County Silver Salver, presented by the West Association.

Northern Ireland Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down) won the Welsh women’s open amateur stroke-play championship in tough conditions at the so-demanding par-75 (for women) Royal Porthcawl links in South Wales.

The Buchanan Castle player double bogeyed both the first and third but got two of the shots back with birdies at the short fourth and the long fifth before bogeying the ninth to turn in three-over-par 40.Then can disaster with a capital “D” – a quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th. Kylie did birdie the long 15th but then lurched off track again with a double bogey 7 at the long 17th and a bogey at the 18th for 44 shots home.Carly Booth (Comrie finished joint 12th with a closing 81 for 234.Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), runner-up in the “Helen Holm,” also struggled in the last round with an 81 for 236 and 17th place.Laura Murray (Alford) finished with an 83 for 242 and a share of 26th place.Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) had an 83 for joint 29th place on 243

Draw Sheet --- Click to enlarge

Sunday's West of Scotland women's (closed) amateur championship, to be hosted by Prestwick Golf Club, has attracted its largest entry for many years - some 48 players, all with handicaps of 10 and under.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) is unable to defend the title as she is being sent by the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association to play in the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play at Royal Porthcawl this weekend.
The backmarker in the field is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) holder of the Swiss women's amateur title, and she will have strong competition from former Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), Sara Bishop (Windyhill) and Susan Wood (Drumpellier) to name but four.
The West of Scotland Ladies County Golf Association has presented a new team trophy for which each county in the West District will nominate three players (under-18 years) from whom the best two scores will count in each round.
