KYLIE WINS THE GERMAN OPEN AFTER A PLAY OFF AGAINST CHARLEY HULL

Kylie Walker Winner of the German Open

Wörthsee/Munich, July 20, 2014 - Scotland’s Kylie Walker survived a final round charge by Charley Hull of England to win the Ladies German Open presented by Marriott.

Walker won with a par on the first extra hole at Golfclub Wörthsee, two months after earning her first Ladies European Tour title in similar fashion, in a play-off at the Deloitte Ladies Open in Holland.

The 27-year-old Glaswegian began the final round with a six stroke lead, but Hull fired a final round 65 to join her on a 72-hole total of 25-under-par.

Hull applied pressure from the beginning, opening with three straight birdies, and she narrowed Walker’s advantage to one stroke with a fourth birdie on the eighth hole. An up and down for birdie from the bunker short and left of the ninth green saw Walker make the turn in level par 36 and she took a two stroke lead into the back nine.

Hull then birdied 12, but then Walker pulled two clear with a birdie on 13. Walker bogeyed 14 and both players birdied 15, before Hull eventually drew level by making a five footer for birdie on the 17th green.

Both players missed birdie chances on the last hole and returned to the 18th tee in a heavy shower. In the play-off, Hull hit her drive into trees and had to chip out. She then hit her third shot to within five feet of the flag but missed her par putt, whereas Walker was on the green for two and took a par.

“It was pretty nerve-wracking. Charley played brilliantly today because it was slightly tougher conditions as well. I wasn’t quite playing as well as I have done the rest of the week but I’m delighted to have hung in there today and get the win,” said Walker, who added a final round 71 to her three opening 64s. “I was hoping not for a play-off, I was trying to win it in regulation play but it didn’t happen and Charley made a great birdie on 17 to tie for the lead. I was delighted in the play-off that I made a solid par and managed to get it. I’m delighted. I’m just living the dream at the moment. I’m really happy and enjoying my golf.”

Hull took the disappointment on the chin and said: “I just blocked my tee shot on the last which was annoying but I hit a good shot in and a good putt. I’m quite happy. It’s been a long three weeks and I’m a bit tired now because I’ve been in contention all three weeks and especially with a major in the middle of it. To finish it off with a second place is not too bad.

“I’m looking forward to my next competitions after I have a week or so off because I feel like my game is in really good condition. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. It’s a shame because in regulation play on 18 I hit my drive 305 yards, so it’s a shame for me to push it a little bit in my play-off hole.

KYLIE IS 6 AHEAD BEFORE GOING ONTO FINAL ROUND -- THE SAME AS RORY !!

A happy Kylie Walker and her caddie on their way to another 64 in Germany

KYLIE REWRITES LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR RECORD BOOKS WITH ANOTHER 64

NEWS RELEASE FROM LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR

Wörthsee/Munich: Glasgow’s Kylie Walker fired a third straight round of eight-under-par 64 in the Ladies German Open presented by Marriott at Golfclub Wörthsee for a three-round total of 259, 24-under-par: a new Ladies European Tour 54-hole record.
The 27-year-old Carrick on Loch Lomond player fired 10 birdies and two bogeys in baking hot temperatures of 31C to lower by one stroke the previous record set by Gwladys Nocera at the 2008 Goteborg Masters.
Walker’s shot of the day came on the par-4 14th when, having had to take a penalty drop behind a tree, she holed a 9-iron shot from 132 yards for the first of four straight birdies.
“On 14, that was a real stroke of luck really,” said the recent Deloitte Ladies Open champion. “I had three-putted 13 for bogey and then tugged my tee shot on 14 and it had hit a tree, but from the tee we couldn’t see what had happened.
"I got up there and the ball was still in the tree about two feet off the ground. So I took two club length’s penalty drop and I didn’t have a line at all. I hit a 9-iron over bushes and a tree and then ran out to see where it went and it managed to go in, so it was crazy. I had to calm myself down after that.”
Walker goes into the final round with a six-stroke lead ahead of China’s Yu Yang Zhang and England’s Charley Hull.
The Scot added: “I feel really comfortable with my game and I’m really enjoying it. Today was really hot and I had to keep getting myself in the shade, any chance I could get to stay cool and I think that helped because out in the sun it was roasting. "Obviously I would love to win and going into tomorrow I’ve just got to try and do the same again and keep playing the way I’m playing.
"I’m putting nicely so I’ve just got to get as many birdies as I can.”
Hull fired eight birdies for her second 64 of the tournament and is also in contention for her second LET victory this season. She said:
“I didn’t really get off to a fast start, because I birdied the first but didn’t hole many putts on my front nine. I missed a short putt on the fourth hole from five feet and could have birdied the next couple of holes but I’m happy with a steady round of golf. Hopefully a low one tomorrow will put me up there.”
After six birdies and one bogey in a 67, the diminutive 22-year-old Zhang, from Guangzhou, remains in the mix for her first LET trophy and said: “I think I will be playing with two long hitters so I will stick to my game plan and just try to make birdies and focus on my shots.”
Two strokes further behind at 16-under, French duo Celine Herbin and the 2012 tournament champion Anne-Lise Caudal lie in a tie for fourth spot. Caudal injured her wrist playing out of a bunker on hole 14 and saw the LET osteopath on course, but still managed birdies on 15 and 16.
She said “I’m happy to be 16-under. It looks like Kylie loves the golf course and it’s going to be hard to catch her but there is some space for second place.”
Welsh rookie professional Amy Boulden was alone in sixth on 15-under after a third round 65, while Germany’s Sandra Gal and the defending champion Carlota Ciganda of Spain share seventh place 10 shots off the lead going into the final round.
Walker needs a final round 66 to set a new Ladies European Tour record for the lowest 72-hole total, at 30-under-par. The current record of 259, 29-under-par, was set by Gwladys Nocera when she won the Goteborg Masters in Sweden six years ago.

KYLIE WALKER EQUALS LET RECORD FOR LOWEST 36-HOLE TOTAL

Kylie Walker
Wörthsee/Munich - West of Scotland’s Kylie Walker fired a second straight round of eight-under-par 64 in scorching conditions at Golfclub Wörthsee to equal the all-time record for the lowest 36-hole total in a Ladies European Tour (LET) event.

At 128, 16-under-par, Walker leads by three strokes over China’s Yu Yang Zhang, who shot a second round 67, with Dutchwoman Dewi Claire Schreefel a stroke further behind in outright third place.

The last woman to post a 36-hole total of 16-under was Gwladys Nocera at the Goteborg Masters in Sweden in 2008, before she went on to record the LET’s lowest 72-hole winning total of 29-under-par.

Kylie led after every round of the Deloitte Ladies Open in Holland two months ago, which she went on to win, but the level-headed Glaswegian, 27, said:
“I’m not really used to being in this position. I led in Holland through the tournament but I haven’t thought about it. I just try to play one shot at a time.”

With six birdies on her front nine, Kylie went out in 30. She picked up a stroke at the first and then a hat-trick from the fourth, before adding two more birdies on holes eight and nine.

After driving left into the trees on hole-12, she took her first bogey in 30 holes, but immediately recovered with a birdie on 13. A pair of birdies followed on 15 and 16 and she dropped a shot on 17 but finished with a birdie on 18 for a back nine of 34.

She said: “I probably played a little bit better today because I had 10 birdies and two bogeys. I’m happy with how I’m playing and the score is looking good at the moment. We’ve got two more rounds and we’re really looking forward to the weekend.

“Going into the back nine today I was trying to beat my score from yesterday which was eight under, but I stumbled on 12 and caught a flier on 17 and ended up through the green.
"I made a couple of bogeys today, but I’ll keep playing the way I played today and see what happens.”

IN-FORM JAFFREY BIDS TO RETAIN GIRLS’ TITLE

SLGA NEWS RELEASE

Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) faces a strong field in defence of the Scottish U18 girls’ championship at Dumfries and County Golf Club next week ( from July 16-18).

The 17-year-old won the title at Ranfurly Castle 12 months ago and has since gone on to make her mark at adult level. She finished runner-up at the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship at Troon in April and then reached the final of the Scottish Ladies’ Championship at Prestwick in May.

“Winning the Scottish girls last year was my goal and it’s great to be able to defend,” said the teenager (pictured) who is heading for Kansas State University in the autumn.

Jaffrey is the backmarker with a plus two handicap, but it won’t be easy to retain the coveted trophy.

Germany-based Fiona Liddell, who played in last year’s Junior Vagliano Trophy, is also playing off plus two while Clara Young (North Berwick), runner-up in last year’s Scottish Ladies’ Championship, has a plus one handicap.

Other strong contenders include the Troon Ladies youngsters, Hazel MacGarvie and Emma Hale, and Mill Green’s Nicola Callander, who won the 2012 Scottish Junior Open Strokeplay Championship.

Following two rounds of strokeplay, the top 16 players qualify for the matchplay knockout. The 18-hole final takes place on Friday afternoon.
