It was thought that Scotland’s leading female amateurs could be the main beneficiaries of Scottish Golf becoming a unified body and that certainly seems to be true.
 Two years after having no complaints whatsoever about failing to have a representative in the Great Britain & Ireland team for a Curtis Cup match in Ireland, Scots are definitely in the mix for the side that will defend that trophy at Quaker Ridge in June.

Aboyne’s Shannon McWilliam and Connie Jaffrey of Troon Ladies would appear to be the best bets to earn spots on a team that will once again be captained by Aberdonian Elaine Farquharson-Black, with a third player, Chloe Goadby of St Regulus, also having given the selectors food for thought with some strong performances recently.

With only eight spots up for grabs in a team due to be announced on Thursday, it would be a tremendous result if two Scots get the nod, giving the game a huge boost in its birthplace in the countdown to the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles next year.

The absence of Leona Maguire, the world No 1, due to the fact she is about to embark on her professional career, is a blow to Farquharson-Black, but the GB&I captain will have have been encouraged by players such as McWilliam, Jaffrey and Goadby all 
showing a hunger to be involved in this contest.

PROVISIONAL GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND SQUAD FOR 2018 CURTIS CUP ANNOUNCED - CONNIE JAFFREY IS IN THE SQUAD

14 December 2017, St Andrews, Scotland:

An initial Great Britain and Ireland squad of 14 players has been announced by The R&A ahead of next year’s Curtis Cup match being played at Quaker Ridge, New York.
The 40th Curtis Cup match will be played from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June 2018 with GB&I attempting to retain the historic trophy after an 11½-8½ win over the United States at Dun Laoghaire in Ireland last year.
Elaine Farquharson-Black, who will captain GB&I in the Curtis Cup for the second time, said, “We have identified a talented group of golfers, including three members of the winning 2016 Curtis Cup team. Each player in the squad is in contention for selection to the team and we will be monitoring their performances and results closely over the coming months.
“We will also be closely following the performances of other players not named in this squad who still have the opportunity to play their way into our thinking before the final team selection is made in April.”
Leona Maguire, who is currently the number one woman golfer in the WORLD AMATEUR GOLF RANKING™, leads a group from Ireland which also includes Paula Grant, a former R&A Foundation scholar, Olivia Mehaffey, a 2016 team member, and Annabel Wilson. Maguire won the 2017 Ladies British Amateur Championship at Pyle & Kenfig, while Mehaffey had wins at the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship and Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship in 2016.
Lily May Humphreys, who won the Girls British Open Amateur Championship at Enville earlier this year, features in a strong English contingent of eight players. Alice Hewson is in contention to make her second Curtis Cup appearance after playing in the winning GB&I side in 2016 and Sophie Lamb, who finished as leading amateur at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Kingsbarns to win the Smyth Salver, is also included.
Scotland’s Shannon McWilliam and Connie Jaffrey make up the squad. A former Scottish Ladies Order of Merit winner in 2015, McWilliam finished runner-up in both the Helen Holm Championship and the Scottish Girls Open Championship this year. Jaffrey attends Kansas State University and has won three times in US collegiate golf, while also triumphing in the 2017 Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship.

GB & I CURTIS CUP TEAM WILL WARM UP WITH MATCH AGAINST CASTLE GOLF CLUB TEAM

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE LADIES’ GOLF UNION

The Great Britain and Ireland team to challenge the United States of America, at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin from June 10 to 12, will warm up for the international contest with a "friendly" match against a members' men's team from Castle Golf Club on the south side of Dublin.
The GB and I team of eight players will be finalised immediately after the Helen Holm Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Troon and will be announced on Thursday 28th April at 2pm.

Six of the home line-up will earn automatic selection - the leading four eligible players in the Women's World Amateur Rankings at the designated cut-off point and also the leading two players on the Ladies’ Golf Union Order of Merit not selected through the World Rankings.
The remaining places in the team will go to two players selected by the LGU Selection Panel.

Elaine Farquharson-Black (Deeside), the first Scot to captain the GB and I Curtis Cup team since Belle Robertson in 1976, played in two Curtis Cup and two Vagliano Trophy matches during her playing career. She was also a member of the winning line-up when the match was played at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 1992.

Elaine said
"It is very kind of the Castle Golf Club to allow the GB & I team to use their marvellous facilities to prepare for the Curtis Cup match. I know they have a wonderful short game facility and course and I thank the members for allowing us to visit. “
Elaine and team manager Helen Hewlett, also a past Curtis Cup player and a former British champion, will arrive with the GB and I squad at Castle Golf Club on Wednesday, June 1 and get straight down to practice in the afternoon.
The four-ball match against the Castle GC team will tee off at 1pm on Friday 3rd June.
They will have a further practice session at Castle Golf Club on the morning of Saturday 4th June before being given an organised tour of Dublin in the afternoon.

Castle Golf Club general manager John McCormack said,
"Our captains Bernadette Murray and Paul Williams, and all our members, are honoured to welcome the GB & I Curtis Cup team to our club in advance of the match against the United States and we will do everything possible to assist”
Castle Golf Club is a magnificent 18-hole parkland course in South Dublin. Nestled between Churchtown and Rathfarnham, the club offers its members and guests exceptional playing conditions and facilities. The club celebrated its centenary in 2013 and the course is a fine example of golf course design, originally by Harry Colt.

This will be only the second Curtis Cup match to be played in Ireland. The first, in 1996, was at Killarney and was won by GB and I. Four years ago, at Nairn Golf Club, GB and I came from behind to win the trophy after an excellent match, watched by big galleries.

KILMACOLM GOLF CLUB SOCIAL EVENING --- PAST CURTIS CUP STARS

Kilmacolm Golf Club who is celebrating their 125th Anniversary this year held their Ladies Social evening on Tuesday (22nd March) with Captain Susan Reid inviting some Past Curtis Cup players to join them. 

Susan introduced Angela Bonallack, Eilidh Briggs, Julie Otto, Mo Richmond and Belle Robertson to all that attended. She gave some history of the Curtis Cup and then questions from the audience were answered by the players - with many amusing stories and tales. 

The evening finished with an excellent supper enjoyed by all with the players joining to chat and mix with everyone around the room.  - A lovely evening was had by all

Susan's Introduction :

The Curtis Cup Match is contested every two years by teams of female amateurs representing Great Britain & Ireland and the United States. It is organised by the United States Golf Association and Ladies Golf Union, who select the respective teams of eight golfers. The Curtis Cup was first played in 1932, and is named after sisters Harriot and Margaret Curtis, who won four victories in the U.S. Women's Amateur. The Curtis sisters donated the trophy for the competition.The Curtis sisters had competed in the 1905 British Ladies Amateur at Royal Cromer Golf Club, where an informal match had occurred between teams of American and British golfers, and they wanted to promote the international friendships in the world of women's golf. The cup is inscribed, "To stimulate friendly rivalry among the women golfers of many lands." 

BELLE ROBERTSON O.B.E.

Belle started playing golf at Dunaverty GC at age 15.  Played in the Curtis Cup in 1960, 1966, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1982, 1986 and was the non-playing Captain of GB & Ireland in 1974 and 1976. She won the British Ladies Amateur title in 1981 plus winning the Scottish Amateur title on seven occasions. Received O.B.E for services to golf. Voted "Scottish Sportswoman of the Year" four times; voted "Women Golfer of the Year" three times; inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.  She also became one of the first female members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in February 2015.

MAUREEN RICHMOND

Maureen began her golfing career here as a junior and she is now an Honorary Member of Kilmacolm.  She played in the Scottish Junior Team for 5 years; was the Scottish Girls Champion 1970, 1971, 1973; the British Girls Champion 1972.  Played in the 1974 Curtis Cup in San Francisco, which Belle Robertson captained!  She also played in the Vagliano Trophy in 1975 (UK & Ireland v Continental Europe) and was selected for the World Team in 1976.  Maureen is now a GP based in the Wirral, and now plays in the British Senior Women’s’ Golf Amateur competitions as well as in the Seniors in Spain (along with Barbara Biggart who is a former Kilmacolm member as well!)

LADY ANGELA BONALLACK

Angela started golfing in England when she was 12 years old. Was British Girls’Champion in 1955 and English Ladies Champion in 1958 and 1963.  She played in 6 Curtis Cup teams – 1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964 and 1966. She is now a member of the R & A and won the 2015 Monthly May Medal  with a net 71, played on the New Course St Andrews. She was also the first woman to play in a match for the R & A against the St Andrews Link Trust Staff that same week. 

JULIE OTTO

Julie was brought up in Felixstowe where she was introduced to golf at the age of 11.  At age 19, she was selected to represent England in the European Lady Junior Team Championships in Germany.    Played in the Curtis Cup teams of 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996. She retired from international amateur golf after the 1996 Curtis Cup as the reigning British Amateur Champion and moved into golf administration becoming Assistant Director – Rules at the R & A.  In 2015, Julie became an Attached PGA Professional at the Fairmont St Andrews and she is also a PGA Teaching Professional at Elie Sports Club in Fife.

EILIDH BRIGGS

Eilidh began playing golf at age 6; got her first handicap at age 9.  She has been the Renfrewshire Ladies County Champion three times; Scottish Girls Champion 2011; Scottish Champion of Champions 2011 & 2012. She played foursomes with her sister Megan, when Eilidh won her first ladies cap at Hillside Golf Club in the Ladies Home International matches in 2011. Eilidh first represented Scotland at the European Young Masters in 2008, returning to the competition in 2015 as the Team Captain. She played in the Curtis Cup in 2014 in St Louis, USA.

All these golfers have won numerous other Championships during their golfing careers – too many to list!

TEGWEN MATHEWS IS GOING TO CAPTAIN THE CURTIS CUP TEAM AGAIN

Tegwen Matthews, the Captain of the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team that scored an historic victory over the USA at Nairn this year, will lead the 2014 team when it defends the trophy on American soil.

The first International Team Captain from Wales, Tegwen proved to be an inspirational and popular leader, and relishes the chance to motivate her team for the 38th Curtis Cup, which will be hosted at the St Louis Country Club, Missouri, in June 2014.

No mean player herself, having been on four successive Curtis Cup teams between 1974 and 1980, Tegwen used that experience and the experience of four years as team manager to Past Captain Mary McKenna MBE, to inspire her team to the first GB&I victory in the biennial match since 1996. She also led the GB&I team to a win in the Astor Trophy Tournament at Fairhaven Golf Club last year, which included victory over a New Zealand team led by the world’s number one amateur Lydia Ko.

Matthews will also captain the Great Britain & Ireland team which takes on the Continent of Europe in the Vagliano Trophy match in June 2013 at Chantilly Golf Club in France.

On being invited to continue as International Team Captain, Tegwen said “I am thrilled, honoured and excited to be invited to be Captain of the GB & I International Ladies Team for a further 2 years. Following our historic Curtis Cup win at Nairn, I would dearly love to raise the bar even higher, by winning back the Vagliano Trophy at Chantilly and retaining the Curtis Cup in St Louis on American soil. Both tough calls, but winning is a habit and I will be doing everything in my power to keep that habit well and truly alive. With many of the Curtis Cup team turning professional, I am sure both teams will look very different, but I know there are a lot of girls waiting in the wings, desperate for the chance, not just to play for GB & I, but to be part of a winning GB & I team. My job is to harness that desire and make the dream a reality.”

The LGU has also announced Scotland’s Elaine Farquharson-Black as Captain of the Junior Vagliano Trophy team, to be played at the same time and venue as the Vagliano Trophy itself. Introduced in 2010, the junior match involves teams of six youngsters, aged 16 and under, going head to head in four sets of matches over a two day period. All six play in two sets of three foursomes and two sets of six singles matches.

Elaine, a solicitor in practice in Aberdeen, played both Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy matches on two occasions, having been on winning teams for the Vagliano Trophy in 1989 and 1991and the Curtis Cup at Hoylake in 1992. She was also a member of the winning GB&I team in the Astor (formerly the Commonwealth) Trophy in 1991. The mother of two young boys, she is enthusiastic about her new role as Captain.

Elaine said “Attending this year’s Curtis Cup in Nairn brought back many warm memories for me of representing my country and I am honoured to be asked to Captain the Junior Vagliano team. The match is a wonderful opportunity for our young players embarking on their international careers. I was fortunate to play under several inspirational captains and I hope that I can use my own experiences to help the next generation of golfers develop. I am also looking forward to working with and learning from Tegwen, who led the Curtis Cup team so magnificently at Nairn.”

Anna Hubbard, Wales, a very experienced and successful team manager who supported Tegwen at the Curtis Cup, will be manager to both Captains at Chantilly next year.

GB&I WIN THE CURTIS CUP

GB&I Curtis Cup Winners

Great Britain and Ireland staged a brilliant last-day surge to win back the Curtis Cup at The Nairn Golf Club today. They finished victors by 10 1/2pt to 8 1/2.
Trailing by 1pt going into the final set of eighth singles, captain Tegwen Matthews' team notched individual wins by Kelly Tidy, who was three down after six holes, 
Amy Boulden, Holly Clyburn, Charley Hull and the clincher from Stephanie Meadow.
The last time GB and I beat the Americans was at Killarney in 1996. The US were bidding to win the Curtis Cup for an eighth straight occasion in the biennial fixture.
This is believed to be the first time since 1956 that the United States have lost a Curtis Cup match after leading into the final set of singles.
The Ryder Cup, Walker Cup, Solheim Cup and now the Curtis Cup all now rest on this side of the Atlantic.
English amateur champion Kelly Tidy came back from three down after six to put the first point of final day on the board at around 1pm.
The English champion's 2 and 1 victory over Austin Ernst in the lead-off singles squared the match overall at 6 1/2pt each.
GB and I's overall points total rose to 8 1/2 with wins by Holly Clyburn (3 and 2 over Erica Popson) and Amy Boulden (3 and 1 over Emily Tubert).
The United States advanced their overnight points total of 6 1/2 by one with Lisa McCloskey beat Scotland's Pamela Pretswell 4 and 3.
Charley Hull played sub-par golf to beat Lindy Duncan 5 and 3 - GB and I now on 9 1/2pt to United States' 7 1/2
The Americans' total moved up to 8 1/2 with Brooke Pancake registering a 6 and 5 win over Leona Maguire in the eighth singles.
Stephanie Meadow produced the clinching point by beating Amy Anderson 4 and 2. Stephanie's figures of four under par were the best of the day, surpassing Charley Hull#s earlier three-under-par effort.
The Olympic Torch (unlit) was on the first tee. Perhaps it lit the flame of fighting spirit among Tegwen's Troopers.
It was a dull, overcast morning, no sunshine but no rain and relatively no wind.

The Ladies Golf Union and women members of the host golf club are combining forces to stage a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Street Party next Tuesday (June 5) from 3.30pm in the Curtis Cup tented village at The Nairn Golf Club.

"Tickets are not required and the party is open to all," said Susan Simpson, the LGU Head of Golf Operations.

 "The GB and I Team will joining the celebrations at some stage in proceedings."

The 37th Curtis Cup match will be held from Friday to Sunday, June 8 to 10 at The Nairn Golf Club. The GB and Ireland, and United States teams will be arriving at Nairn at the weekend.

The teams will practise over the course each morning and afternoon  from Monday onwards and members of the public are welcome to watch.

The opening ceremony - which Susan Simpson promises will be "spectacular" - starts at 6pm on the Thursday. 

GB and I have not won the biennial match against the Americans since Killarney in 1996.
