The USA appears on the verge of reclaiming the Curtis Cup from Great Britain and Ireland.
After earning five of the available six points to grab a 9-3 lead on Saturday – including a sweep of the three morning four-ball encounters, captain Virginia Derby Grimes’ charges need just 1½ of the available eight points in Sunday’s singles to return the Cup to American soil after a three-point defeat in 2016 in the Republic of Ireland.
The lone bright spot for GB&I came from the tandem of Olivia Mehaffey, 20, of Northern Ireland, and Sophie Lamb, 20, of England. The duo registered their second foursomes victory of the competition, defeating Kupcho, the No. 2 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking™, and world No. 1 Lilia Vu, 2 and 1. Mehaffey is one of two returning players from the victorious 2016 team and the side’s highest-ranked golfer in the WAGR (No. 16), while Lamb was the low amateur in last year’s Women’s British Open.

Gemma Batty's historic win in 2018 Scottish women's amateur championship final

Gemma Batty - 2018 Scottish Ladies Champion - photo courtesy of Scottish Golf

by Colin Farquharson

Gemma Batty, English-born West Linton Golf Club member, has become the first player to have won both the English and Scottish women's amateur golf championships.
The 24-year-old won the English title while she was waiting to acquire Scottish eligibility after moving from Yorkshire to Moffat. And, today (on Saturday), Gemma won the 104th Scottish women's championship at Golf House Club, Elie in Fife by beating former champion Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) by one hole in the 18-hole final.
There were nine birdies in the final - five by Batty and four by MacDonald - so it was a shame that such a good tie ended with a concession of the hole and the match by the Craigielaw player.

MacDonald drew first blood with a winning par 4 at the second but conceded the fourth to be pulled back to all square. Batty went ahead for the first time with a birdie 3 at the sixth. MacDonald birdied the eighth to get back on terms but Batty produced another birdie to go one up again at the ninth. She then birdied the 12th to go two up.
That should have been a decisive lead but MacDonald was not ready to throw in the towel, she birdied the 14th to halve her deficit and then squared the match when Batty bogeyed the 15th.
The par-5 17th was halved in birdie 4s, leaving the players all square on the 18th tee.

Then came the disappointing last hole … certainly disappointing for MacDonald who ran into trouble and finally conceded the hole, the match and the title to Batty.

It's Gabrielle MacDonald v Gemma Batty in the Scottish Final at Elie

by Colin Farquharson

It's a MacDonald v Batty Scottish women's amateur final at Elie on Saturday Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw), the 2014 champion and beaten finalist in 2016, is through to her third Scottish women's amateur championship final.

She will play Gemma Batty (West Linton) in Saturday's final of the 104th staging of the tournament, at Golf Club House, Elie in Fife. MacDonald knocked out the No 1 seed, Chloe Goadby (St Regulus) at the 23rd hole in a marathon morning quarter-final tie.
Then she squeezed past Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) with a birdie 2 at the short 21st hole.

Batty was three under par in beating the 2016 champion, Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) by 5 and 4 in the semi-finals, having beaten Tara Mactaggart (Minto) by 3 and 2 in the morning quarter-finals. Summers had won at the 19th in the quarter-finals against Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead), conqueror of defending champion Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) earlier in the tournament.

The Clark Rosebowl was won by Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) who birdied the 18th for a one-hole win over Katie Scott  (Strathaven)
