HANNAH DARLING LEADS THE QUALIFIERS IN THE UNDER 18 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe), - pictured left, the youngest ever U18 girls champion at the age of 13 12 months ago, looks unstoppable in her bid for a repeat.

She headed the 16 girl qualifiers for the match-play stages by six strokes with an impressive nine-under-par total of 137 over  the new and old course Moray

There were two players, Rachel Mathieson (Hazlehead) and Sarah Westwood (Elgin), on the 162 mark, tied for the final match-play berth.

It went to Rachel on a card countback so it is she who will face Darling in the first round of the girls' match-play.

Alongside this, Gillian Kyle the junior convenor plans to run their Championship. This will be a stroke play event this year rather than a matchplay event. The other counties seem to do it this way so she thought we could try it this year.

The lowest gross score will be the champion. The scores can then be converted into stableford points for the Campbell Clock competition.

NIKKI IS GETTING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AT CATHCART CASTLE

Nikki Ferguson (2014 D&A Champion) is presented with the trophy
by County Captain at the time - Carol Sim

From the PGA WEBSITE

Past D&A Champion Nikki Ferguson is returning to the PGA National Assistants’ Final after combining the two biggest interests in life - teaching and golf.

The Cathcart Castle Golf Club assistant originally wanted to be a schoolteacher.

But she was also a keen golfer and the Glasgow-based player discovered that PGA training gave her the best of both worlds.

Now she has completed her three year course and will take one last shot at playing in the £32,000 Birdietime-supported Assistants’ final which will be played at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey between July 3-5.

Ferguson, who has only been at Cathcart Castle since April, earned a place in the event for the second time when she finished eighth in the qualifying competition held at Livingstone’s Deer Park Golf & Country Club in May.

She played in the grand final two years ago at Little Aston Golf Club in Birmingham - but definitely hopes she does better at Farleigh after missing the cut in 2016.

“I wanted to get more into coaching with the chance to play a bit more which is why I joined Cathcart Castle,” she said.

“This will be my second appearance in the final, the first one at Little Aston didn’t go too well. I didn’t really know what it was about and I didn’t play well. But it’ll be a rare visit to play in England for me, it’s hard to justify going there to compete most of the year.

“It’s just a bit too far away so I tend to play mainly in Order of Merit events in Scotland.”

Now she plans to focus on her career in golf after coming through PGA training.

“I always wanted to be a teacher, I’ve always wanted to be on that side of things, but I also had an interest in golf and spoke to quite a few people about doing the PGA course,” she said.

“Everbody recommended doing it. But I also liked the studying aspect and learning about golf, especially the business side. I’ve furthered my knowledge about golf. It’s also giving me a good relationship with the club members as well.”

Other players from Scotland due to play at Farleigh include: Jamie McLeary (Deer Park);  Chris Curran (Bathgate Golf Club); Fraser McKenna (Caldwell Golf Club);  Anthony O’Donnell (Largs Golf Club); Adam Wills (Lanark Golf Club) and Darryn McBratney (Carnwath Golf Club)

NO SCOTS LEFT IN LAST 16 OF THE BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE FROM R AND A
The three leading qualifiers from the stroke play stage of the 115th Ladies’ Amateur Championship were knocked out in the first round of match play at Hillside Golf Club today.

Elin Esborn, who was the official leading qualifier on countback after she finished on one-under-par alongside Esther Henseliet and Elodie Chapelet, suffered a loss to Germany’s Ava Bergner (2 Holes). The German then went on to defeat Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup player Annabel Fuller in the second round 3 and 2.
Henseleit, who lost out to Finland’s Anna Backman by one hole, and Chapelet, defeated by Aline Krauter (2 holes), also departed the championship after the first round of match play.
Hollie Muse, pictured left,  heroically came through an all-England match with the 2017 Girls Amateur champion and Curtis Cup player, Lily May Humphreys despite suffering a painful groin injury on Wednesday. The Liverpool golfer limped through both her first (Hannah Screen 3 and 2) and second round matches to progress to Friday's last 16.
The 2016 Girls Amateur Champion Emile Alba Paltrinieri from Italy is looking to add the Ladies’ Amateur title to her record after defeating Scotland’s champion Gemma Batty 5 and 4 to book her place in the third round. The 16-year-old knocked Ana Ruiz from Mexico in the morning session winning by 2 holes.
Ruiz’s team-mate Isabella Fierro came from four down with five to play to beat Sweden’s Maja Stark on the 19th hole in the first round. The 17-year-old then went on to defeat Spain’s Laura Maria Gomez Ruiz to set up a third-round tie with Alessio Nobilio, who edged out GB and I Curtis Cup player Olivia Mehaffey by 1 hole.
Hannah McCook from Grantown on Spey and Chloe Goadby (St Regulus) lost in the first round of the match-play.
Wales' Bethan Morris, lost at the 20th to P Schmid from Switzerland in the last Round 2 match to finish - after 8pm - on the opening match-play day.
The only English player to make it through to the last 16, apart from Hollie Muse, is Georgina Blackman from Chelmsford.
