CLARE QUEEN CHATS ABOUT HER CAREER TO DATE

As part of Women & Girls’ Golf Week, today we are focusing on the opportunities for young, female aspiring players at the elite level of the game. We caught up with Scottish Golf Performance Director, Clare Queen (pictured above) , to chat about her career to date, the modern athlete and the future of women and girls’ golf.

Explain to us the key responsibilities of the role of Scottish Golf Performance Director.

I am responsible for overseeing all training and competition programmes across Scottish Golf, particularly around our National Teams. Players join the performance programme from 12 years of age and the performance strategy is ultimately designed to assist the most talented players in fulfilling their potential. The programme gives Scottish players an opportunity to test themselves against their peers across the UK, Europe and beyond. In short, my role is the help players build-up to and ideally make the transition from being a talented amateur player into a professional.

CATRIONA MATTHEW IS TIED IN 15TH PLACE AS THAILANDS PHATLUM TAKES THE 36 HOLE LEAD

Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum produced a major turnaround in form to lead the field after the second round of the Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The diminutive 28-year-old from Bangkok had made just one cut in eight previous starts in the championship but that did not stop her firing a second successive 67 to take a one-shot lead at the halfway stage on ten under-par 134.

What made her performance all-the more-impressive was that the Thai golfer played all 36-holes without dropping a single shot on what is widely regarded as one of the most demanding courses on the GB & I links circuit.

Home challenge still strong

The only other player in the field to play the first 36-holes without a blemish is 2017 Ladies European Tour No. 1, Georgia Hall, who was tied for third place 12 months ago at Kingsbarns and is challenging again after adding a 68 to her opening 67.

The 22-year-old from Bournemouth began the round with eight straight pars before posting her first red number with a birdie on the ninth. She made further advances at the 13th, 15th and 16th and will go into the weekend with the support of the home crowd behind her as she bids to become the first British champion since Catriona Matthew at Lytham in 2009 who finished on 3 under par and tied in 15th place

Hole-in-one again

For the second day in row there was a hole-in-one on the ninth which resulted in title sponsors Ricoh handing out a £2,000 bonus as part of its drive to raise funds for raise funds of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

On the first day it was England’s Florentyna Parker who posted the magic number and 24-hours later it was the turn of Canada’s Brooke Henderson whose ace with a 9-iron helped her post a 70 and finish alongside Parker, America’s Mina Harigae, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom on five under par 139.

The cut fell was at one over par 145 and among the players to miss out were Charley Hull, Karrie Webb, Laura Davies, Inbee Park and Mel Reid and Kylie Walker

The Asia-Pacific champion Atthaya Thitikul carded rounds of 73 and 71 to be the only amateur to make the cut and is guaranteed the Smyth Salver awarded to the leading amateur provided she completes the next two rounds.

ABOYNE HOSTS THE R&A CORONATION FOURSOMES AREA FINAL

Aboyne is celebrating after successfully hosting the leading national competition for amateur lady golfers at the club yesterday. Selected by the sport's governing body 'the Royal & Ancient’ (R&A) to stage the area finals of the ‘Coronation Foursomes’ it was the first visit to Aboyne for the R&A.

The long-standing and highly prestigious ‘Coronation Foursomes’ has this year attracted 25,000 entrants from over 1,200 clubs across the UK & Ireland in a series of regional qualifiers. Some 120 ladies representing 60 clubs from as far as Shetland in the North to Grantown-on-Spey in the West down to Moreton Hall in Edinburgh made the journey to Aboyne for the area finals yesterday.

The winners who go forward to the national finals at St Andrews in late September were the team of Angela Joss and Hannah Bycroft from Alford with 39 points. A close second on 38 points were Alison Christie and Mary McGregor from Torphins with 38 points. Third were the team of Liz Clark and Chris Cowie from Peterculter with 37 points.

Jim McArthur, the R&A representative in overall charge of the day said “I want to add my own personal thanks for the kind welcome, great hospitality, and support and enthusiasm shown by Aboyne Golf Club and its members. It was a great event and the course was presented in terrific condition. On behalf of the R&A many thanks to the Club and congratulations to everyone that was involved in making the Coronation Foursomes a fantastic success enjoyed by all competitors."

Liz Taylor, Lady Captain at Aboyne said "It was a great honour and privilege for Aboyne to be hosting such a prestigious tournament attracting players from right across Scotland and putting money in to the local economy. We showed what a fine facility and great challenging course we have at Aboyne. Given the glowing feedback we have received from players and officials it has strengthened our standing at a national level and firmly put Aboyne on the map to hold future national golfing events."

MAUREEN MADILL IS FEELING CROSS ABOUT WOMENS GOLF

I’m feeling very cross.

This is 2018 and we’re in the middle of Major season in golf.  Three weeks ago the first US Senior Women’s Open was held at Chicago Golf Club and Dame Laura Davies put on a peerless display winning by ten shots.  A couple of weeks ago we were enthralled by Francesco Molinari at Carnoustie.  Last week we saw Tom Watson shooting his age round the Old Course at St Andrews in the men’s Senior British Open and this week I’m at Royal Lytham & St Annes for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, the fourth of the women’s five majors in the game.  So, why am I cross?

It was impossible to see any coverage of Laura’s win – I certainly didn’t find any – and if you cannot come to Lytham, and do not have a Sky Sports package, the only sight you will have of the world’s best women golfers this week is a paltry hour on the BBC, squeezed in either side of midnight.  Disappointed doesn’t begin to cover it.

MINJEE LEE LEADS THE BRITISH OPEN ON DAY 1

Australian star Minjee Lee, pictured above, took advantage of the glorious weather conditions at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club, Lancashire this afternoon to shoot a sizzling seven-under-par 65 to lead after the first round of the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Lee is one stroke clear of Japan’s Mamiko Higa, with England’s Georgia Hall tied for third place only two shots from the lead

The 2009 Champion Catriona Matthew finished on 1under par 71 to be tied in 28th place. Kylie Henry had 2 disaster holes to drop 5 shots in her round of 78.

Charitable donations to follow birdies, eagles and hole-in-ones For every birdie, eagle and hole-in-one hit by competitors at this year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, Ricoh Europe will donate money to fund life changing research into Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. 

 The print and technology specialist will donate £10 per birdie, £20 for every eagle and £2,000 for a hole-in-one to Alzheimer’s Research, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

CRAIGMILAR'S MARY RICHARDSON -- JUNIOR VOLUNTEER AND A HIDDEN HERO

As part of Woman & Girls’ Golf week, Scottish Golf have been catching up with the hidden heroes of golf in Scotland, and  we’re featuring Craigmillar Park’s Junior Convenor Mary Richardson to talk all things volunteering and golf…

Mary is currently the Junior Convenor at Craigmillar Park in Edinburgh, and she is also a member at Dunbar in East Lothian.

What’s the best thing about volunteering? 

 I have been involved as a volunteer with golf for many years with my club, county and with the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association (now Scottish Golf).
 My current role as junior convenor is probably the most frustrating and time consuming one, but by far the most rewarding.
 Watching and supporting young people as they learn and develop, make friends, have fun and fall in love with the game, as I have, is such a privilege.
Also, fantastic to see so many young girls take up golf and join our club – we currently have 25 girls, just over a 3rd of our junior membership and to watch them walking up the fairways, chatting, laughing and enjoying their golf, always puts a smile on my face.
