West of Scotland Championship --- Hailstorm cancels 2nd round
A freak hailstorm in the midst of gale-force winds forced the cancellation of the second round of the scheduled 36-hole West of Scotland women’s amateur stroke-play championship at Drumpellier Golf Club today (Sunday).
Ayrshire county champion Lesley Hendry was declared the winner with a first-round 77,five over the standard scratch but a good score in such awful May weather.
Lesley had a stroke to spare from Elaine Cuthill (Lanark) with Liz Keohone (Loudoun) and Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), the new Lanarkshire women’s champion both on the 79 mark.
Lanarkshire (Elaine Cuthill, Pamela Pretswell and Susan Wood) won the team event with ease with a total of 238.
Kirsten Scott (Windyhill) won the handicap prize with a net 73 off 13, despite incurring a two-stroke penalty for inadvertently starting at the wrong hole.
