Carnoustie’s Jessica Meek set the early pace at Kilmarnock Barassie on Friday as play got underway in the 2019 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship.
Meek, a former student at the University of Missouri, entered this week’s competition as the highest ranked player with a handicap of +4.9 and quickly made her mark on the field opening with a six-under par round of 69.
There was no letting up from Meek in the afternoon as she went on to go one better with a second-round score of 68 to take the top spot in tomorrow’s matchplay.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after a scorching day on the links, Meek said, “The course is in great condition and it was nice to have a little bit of a breeze today but other than that it was super toasty. I like playing in this weather, I would prefer to play in this than our usual Scottish weather.”
Qualifying as the top seed for tomorrow’s matchplay, Meek admitted she is looking forward to the challenge, adding, “Matchplay is a little bit different, so you just have to keep playing your own game. At the end of the day, I am just looking to have some really good matches out there. Hopefully it is good golf from everybody, and we will see how it pans out for me.”
Meek’s playing partner Chloe Goadby battled back from an opening round of 78 to go ten shots better in round two. The St Regulus member carded a bogey-free second-round of 68 to secure her place in the weekend’s matchplay.
Summarising her opening day, Goadby said, “This morning I just got into a bit of trouble off the tee, had a couple of penalty shots and dropped shots. In the afternoon, I chose to be a bit clearer and committed with my shots and it paid off so we will try and continue that into the rest of the weekend.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, Goadby added, “This course is an interesting one, I think on holes nine and ten you can be a bit more aggressive and be rewarded with it, whereas today you had to play a bit more conservatively. The wind can change things massively here so depending on that tomorrow, we will assess the strategy and see how aggressive we want to be.”
Defending Champion Gemma Batty missed out on a place in the top 16 but was able to secure a place in the Clark Rosebowl matchplay which will also take place over the weekend.
