Pamela finishes in the top 20 in the Murcia Open at La Manga

Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) was the top Scot, finishing T9 on 223 with scores of 76, 70 and 77. She had a double bogey 6 at the 15th for the second successive day. Heather's take-home pay amounted to 675 Euros.
British amateur international Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), who entered the tournament because it was being played over La Manga's South Course which is the same one that will be used for January's LET Qualifying School, finished one shot behind Heather but T17 was her final position after rounds of 73, 75 and 76. She had a birdie 3 at the 14th in the final round. The same hole cost her a double bogey 6 in the first round.

MURCIA LADIES OPEN PLAY SUSPENDED: SCOTS IN TOP TEN

The second round of the 54-hole Murcia Ladies Open over the South Course, La Manga will be completed early Saturday morning after electrical storms in the south-east region of Spain forced a suspension of play this afternoon.
Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) and amateur international Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) will have nine holes to complete before going out again for the third and final round.
They are both two over par overall, Pamela Pretswell, playing the second nine first, dropped three shots over her first three holes. MacRae started badly but birdied the fourth, sixth and eighth before play was halted.
Ayrshire's Pamela Feggans also has nine holes to complete but, having run up a quadruple bogey 8 at the third and taken 44 shots for the first nine to be 12 over par overall, she has little chance of surving the cut, forecast to be at four-over 150.
Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll was one of the few to complete her second round and she had a disastrous 83 with one triple boge3y and two double bogeys to be joint 66th on 159.
Danish amateur Daisy Nielsen, with nine holes to play, leads at three under par by one shot from Danielle McVeigh (Ireland), also halfway through her second round, with overnight leader Carlota Ciganda (Spain) one under par with six holes to play.

NOW WORLD-RANKED No 29, BUT PAMELA PRETSWELL MUST PRE-QUALIFY

Hamilton's Pamela Pretswell moved up three places to No 29 in the Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings this midweek on the strength of her finishing third in rain-shortened French women's amateur international tournament at Morfontaine at the weekend.
This means the Bothwell Castle GC member will have to play in the 72-hole pre-qualifying event at the Ladies European Tour School at La Manga, Spain from January 8 to 11.
Had she been ranked in the leading 25 at the LET's closing date for entries, she would have been exempt from pre-qualifying and gone straight through to the Final Q School field for the 90-hole event from January 15 to 19.

PAMELA PRETSWELL FINISHES IN THIRD PLACE IN FRENCH EVENT AFTER THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS REDUCED TO 3 ROUNDS

Bothwell Castle's Pamela Pretswell had a 72 today and was three shots off the pace after 3 rounds of the 72-hole event at Morfontaine Golf Club.
The Bothwell Castle player has had rounds of 69 74 and 72
Pamela, the first-round pacemaker with a 69, was deprived, however, of the opportunity to regain the lead when the fourth and final round of the French international women's amateur golf championship at Morfontaine was cancelled because of heavy rain.
The championship for the Cecile de Rothschild Trophy was cut to three rounds and Pamela finished third on 215 (69-74-72), three shots behind the winner, Perrine Delacour from Paris, winner of the British girls open title two years ago. Perrine scored 73, 66 and 73 for four-under-par 212.
Another French player, Fiona Puyo (72-72-70) finished second on 214, one ahead of Pretswell.
Rising English teenage star Charley Hull finished joint fourth on 217 with scores of 70, 74 and 73.
Compatriot Rachel Drummond shot 72, 74 and 73 and finished eighth on 219.

England are Women's Home International champions for the first time since Dunbar Golf Club was the venue in 2007. And captain Chris Pascall's squad finished the job in style with an 8-1 victory over Ireland on a sunny last day at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire.
England did not win a match at Whitchurch, Cardiff 12 months ago. This time round England won three out of three, having already beaten both Wales and Scotland by 6-3.
Wales finished runners-up with two wins to their credit by beating Scotland, the defending champions, 5-4. It was the Scots' third defeat of the week. Twelve months ago they won three out of three. This time round they finished last.
Scots skipper Fiona Norris reinstated the Briggs sisters, Megan and Eilidh, to the line-up for the final set of singles after leaving them out of two sessions of play.
They responded with two good wins. Megan beat Lucy Gould 4 and 2 while Eilidh was a 5 and 4 winner over Katherine O'Connor.
Wales' Amy Boulden beat international team-mate Pamela Pretswell by 5 and 4 in the lead-off singles. The Welsh player was two up on the Scot after five holes and increased her lead to three after eight and four with a birdie at the 10th
A half in birdie 3s ended the match at the 14th.
Kelsey MacDonald came back from two down after 12 to salvage a square match with Katie Bradbury. Kelsey birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th in her storming finish.
In a match between two teenagers, Scotland's Alyson McKechin halved with Wales' Chloe Williams who was two holes up after five. McKechin birdied the sixth and seventh to square the match.
Williams had regained a two-hole lead by winning three in a row from the 12th but the Scot won the 15th and 17th to gain half a point/
Welsh champion Becky Harries notched up her sixth win in six appearances by beating Scottish champion Louise Kenney 3 and 1 in the final tie to finish.
Harries was three up after five but Kenney got her back to one by winning the sixth with a birdie and the ninth.
Harries pulled away again by winning the 10th and 11th with a birdie. The 12th was halved in birdies and Kenney won the 13th to be two down with five to play. After three halves in a row from the 14th, Harries clinched a 3 and 1 victory by winning the 17th.

Scotland lose to England on the 2nd day of the Home Internationals

From the LGU Website
England favourites for title after beating Scotland, Wales beat Ireland

England go into the final day of the Ladies’ Home Internationals at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire as the only team with a 100 per cent record and favourites to win the title for the first time since Dunbar in 2007.

Scotland, the defending champions, suffered their second defeat of the week when they lost 6-3 to England who took a grip on the outcome by making a 3-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes. England had come from behind to beat Wales 6-3 on the first day.

They carried the momentum they built up in winning five of their singles on Wednesday into the match against the Scots.
Kelly Tidy extended the England lead to 4-0 by beating Jane Turner 5 and 3. Tidy never looked back after winning the first three holes.and had four birdies in all in a quality performance by the 2010 British champion.

Pamela Pretswell put Scotland’s first point of the day on the board by beating Charlotte Wild 3 and 1 in the lead-off singles.
Pretswell was three up after six holes and was four up after 11 holes.
Holly Clyburn made it 5-1 for England with a 5 and 3 win over international debutante Rebecca Wilson. Clyburn won five holes in a row from the 12th
Bronte Law chalked up a sixth point for Scotland by beating Kelsey MacDonald 2 and 1. Youngster Law was two up at the turn and four up after 11. Then MacDonald rallied to win the 12th with a birdie 3, and also the 13th, 14th and 15th to be all square with three to play.

Law conjured up a birdie 2 at the 16th to halt the Scot’s charge and go one up again. She also won the 17th for a 2 and 1 victory.
Alyson McKechin scored a second point for Scotland by beating Charlotte Ellis by one hole. The Scots teenager made a great start by winning the first two holes but she was pulled back to square after four and had to fight her way back into a two-hole lead with a birdie 3 at the 14th. Ellis won the 15th to be one down going into the closing holes.

McKechin held on to her narrow lead by halving the last two holes, pitching dead for a 5 at the last after her first chip went over the green.
Scottish champion Louise Kenney, fielded as the tail-gunner by skipper Fiona Norris, won the last tie, beating young Georgia Hall 2 and 1 after going three up through eight holes.

So the Scots regained some pride by sharing the singles 3-3 after their blank sheet in the foursomes

IRELAND DENT SCOTLAND'S TITLE AND ENGLAND PEG BACK WALES
Title-holders Scotland's hopes of retaining the Women's Home Internationals title at Hillside Golf Club took a potentially fatal blow on another very windy and latterly very wet day at the Lancashire links.
The Scots led Ireland by 2 points after the morning foursomes but the Irish took the singles by 3 points to finish as 5-4 winners.
Meanwhile, England, trailing 2-1 to Wales after the morning foursomes, won five of the six singles to win the match 6-3.
Scotland play England and Ireland play Wales on Day 2
Scotland looked set for a comfortable start to the defence of the title they won at Whitchurch (Cardiff) 12 months ago when Pamela Pretswell beat Lisa Maguire 5 and 4 to stretch the Scots' lunchtime lead to 3.5 to 0.5.
But it was a false dawn. Scotland did not win another singles tie.
Louise Coffey started the swing Ireland's way when she beat Louise Kenney 4 and 3,
Gillian O'Leary had a very good 3 and 1 win over Kelsey MacDonald and Charlene Reid chalked up a 5 and 4 win over former Scottish champion Megan Briggs.
That left the overall scoreline level at 3.5pt each with two matches to finish.
Ireland's Paula Grant, two down to Monifieth debutante Rebecca Wilson at the turn, fought back to gain a square match by winning the last hole.
And Ireland got the clinching victory point in the last match to finish with Emma O'Driscoll winning the 16th and 17th and halving the last for a come-from-behind one hole victory over Craigielaw's Jane Turner.
England came storming back in the singles against Wales, quickly making up their one-point deficit from the singles, winning five of the six afternoon ties.
A rampant England is bad news for Scotland's second match particularly after the morale blow they must have suffered with their collapse in the singles.

Blisters or no blisters, Pamela would have crawled on to the first tee at Carnoustie

From the LGU Website 27.07.2011

Pamela Pretswell, the Hamilton girl who might have become the Andy Murray of the female tennis world, says she has no regrets at turning her back on tennis seven years ago when she was 15 and was Scotland’s top-ranked girl player at tennis – and No 2 in junior badminton!
Speaking at Carnoustie where the Bothwell Castle GC member is one of six amateurs in a field of the best female golfers in the world, assembled for the Ricoh British Women’s Open championship, the 22-year-old business and management degree graduate from Glasgow University, said:
“Giving up tennis was the best decision I ever made. To be as dedicated to a career in tennis as Andy Murray (two years older) was, I would have had to give up the idea of going to university, completing an education and having a life,” she said.
“I turned my attentions to golf because I knew I could play and practise golf and still get a university education. And seven years later I had won the British women’s open amateur stroke-play championship and played for Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy, so I have absolutely no regrets at all. I have not swung a tennis racquet again since the day I walked away from the sport.”
It was winning last year’s British stroke-play title at Tenby that won Pamela a place in the Ricoh Women’s British Open this week and even though she had to withdraw from last Saturday’s final round in Holland of the European women’s amateur championship, there was never any doubt that she would be there when her name is called on the first tee at Carnoustie on Thursday.
“I have a tendency to get blisters on my feet and I had them last week in Holland. I had them lanced but it would have been too painful to play in the last round. I could have finished in the top 20, maybe better, but it would have been too sore,” said Pamela.
“Different story this week, of course, I would have crawled on to the first tee if I had had to, blisters or no blisters and taken 10 hours to get round if need be …. I’ve looked forward to the Ricoh British Women’s Open championship since the day last August I knew I had won a place in the field by winning the British stroke-play.
“Carnoustie is quite simply the best course I have ever played. There is no easy shot or easy hole on the course. It just doesn’t give you a break … and that’s the way I like it. The tougher the course, the better I like it.
“And I’m right in the mood for this week. I’m just come off the best bucket of balls I’ve probably ever hit on a practice range.”
Pamela’s dad William Pretswell is her caddie and though Kevin Craggs is her coach, her father, who was a scratch player – he’s not 55 – and a Scottish universities champion in his day.
“He’s a good caddie. Knows when to speak up, knows when to keep quiet and he obviously knows the game, having been a scratch player,” said Pamela who might now win the Ricoh Women’s British Open this week but could certainly do a Tom Lewis, winner of the R&A Amateur Silver Medal at Royal St George’s a week or two back.
Yes, there is a Silver medal for the leading ladies amateur in the women’s Major but, the same rules apply as in the men’s Open, making the halfway cut is mandatory in qualifying to win the Smythe Medal on Sunday.
So what does the future hold for Pamela Pretswell?
“I intend going to the Ladies European Tour School later in the year and I think I have the game to make the grade,” she said. “If not, then I would probably set up a business to make the most of my university qualifications.”
She’s a smart girl is our Pamela.

European Amateur Championship won by Ireland's Lisa McGuire

Irish players dominated the final placings of the European women's individual amateur golf championship at Noordwijkse Golf Club in Holland today.
In very windy conditions, 16-year-old Lisa Maguire from Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, a member of the Slieve Russell club, became the first player from Ireland ever to win this prestigious title since the tournament was inaugurated in 1986.
Stephanie Meadow of Northern Ireland was runner up and Leona Maguire was fourth.
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) withdrew from the competition before the start of the fourth round due to an injury.

Scotland Miss Top Flight

Scotland’s women, still handicapped by the loss of champion Louise Kenney, who has been in hospital since the eve of the tournament for surgery to remove food stuck in her throat, finished 13th on 746 in the European women’s team championship at Murhof, Austria.
Again all five individual Scotland scores had to count, instead of the worst being discarded. and they were:
Pamela Pretswell 70, Jane Turner 71, Kelsey MacDonald 71, Megan Briggs 77, Rachael Watton 81.
Scotland’s team total of 370 was an improvement of six shots on Tuesday but their total of 746 was well outside the championship flight maximum of 733 by eighth qualifiers France. Germany led the way with 15-under 705, ahead of Denmark and Spain. Ireland and England qualified fifth and sixth on the same mark, 726.
So disappointment for the Scotland women who won the bronze medals in this championship 12 months ago.

In the European Girls Team Championship Scotland finished 14th of 19 with a total of 789, ahead of 16th placed Ireland (791) and 17th placed Wales (819).
Scotland's second-day scores were:
Eilidh Briggs 76, Alyson McKechin 76, Clara Young 78, Hannah McCook 79, Lauren Whyte 80, Ailsa Summers 82.

Pamela, Megan, Eilidh and Alyson all do well but Scotland are struggling

Scots women have mountain to climb to make top eight in Austria
The Scotland women's team, who gained bronze medals in Spain last year, will be hard pushed to qualify for the top flight of the European women's team championship at Murhof GC in Austria this week.
With Scottish champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) listed as a No Return - more likely that she was unable to play for some reason - all five Scots scores counted, which was a pity because Vagliano Trophy player Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and Mortonhall teenager Rachael Watton both had seven-over-par 79s.
The Scotland counting scores were:
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) par 72, Megan Briggs 73, Jane Turner (Craigielaw) 73, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) 79, Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) 79.
Megan Briggs was going very well indeed when she turned in 34, having birdied the fourth, seventh and eighth, but she took 39 shots for the back nine.
Jane Turner was out in 37 and back in 36.
Kelsey MacDonald had halves of 39 and 40. She had one birdie, one double bogey and six bogeys.
Rachael Watton had halves of 40 and 39.
Pamela Pretswell went out in 35 and back in 37 for her par-matching round, even though she had a double bogey 6 at the third. The G B and A Vagliano Trophy team player birdied the first, sixth, ninth and 14th.
The Scots are lying joint 15th on 376 with Denmark (345) leading the way from Spain (356), Germany (359) and England (363).
Somehow, the Scots have to make up the leeway between them and the team/teams in seventh/eighth place overnight: Sweden and France, both on 367.
Ireland, surprisingly with a very strong team on paper, are back in 12th place on 370.
Wales are 19th of 20.
Spanish champion Camilla Hedberg, who played for the Continent of Europe's winning Vagliano Trophy team at Royal Porthcawl a week or so ago, had the best individual round of five-under-par 67.
Scotland are unlikely to qualify for the top flight of the European girls team championship at Is Molas GC, Sardinia. They are lying 16th in a field of 19 with a first-round, best five from six team total of 400 - 24 shots worse than the team in eighth place overnight, Norway.
Scotland scores were: Elidh Briggs 75, Alyson McKechin 76, Hannah McCook 82, Clara Young 82, Ailsa Summers 85, Lauren Whyte 86 (non-counting).
England's Lauren Taylor, the new British women's champion, had the lowest score of three-under-par 69. She was one of nine players to get under the par of 72.
Finland (361) lead from England (363) and Spain (367). Ireland and Wales, like Scotland, are unlikely to make the top flight of eight. The Irish are lying 15th on 398, the Welsh 17th on 421.
