TRIBUTES

SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
Andrew McKinlay, CEO of Scottish Golf said, “On behalf of Scottish Golf, we would like to express our deepest condolences to Joan’s family and friends at this difficult time. Joan was a two-time winner of the Scottish Ladies Championship and represented Scotland with distinction at so many high profile events within the amateur game.”

GILLIAN KIRKWOOD  - PAST PRESIDENT OF THE LGU
"Joan was SLGA President when I first went onto the SLGA Executive in 1995.
Her extensive experience and golfing knowledge were extremely useful to the Committee, especially when we hosted a European Team Championship at  Nairn and discussed (fruitlessly)  amalgamation with the SGU."

"I’ve emailed some of the LGU Past and Vice-Presidents and they have replied to say how much they admired Joan, as a player, selector and administrator, although many of them found her strong Fife accent difficult to understand ! "

"She had a sharp wit and a great sense of humour, but what comes through in their emails was the great respect and fondness they held for her."

"Latterly her golf took a back seat to bowls,  but she attended both SLGA and LGU events and was always supportive and interested in what the LGU was doing."

"Golf is a sadder place today with the news of her death."

SHONA MALCOM - PGA SCOTLAND
"Sorry to hear about Joan's death yesterday. She was President when I went on to the SLGA as Treasurer in 1996, and we worked very closely together in what was quite a challenging time with the move to Drumoig and the need to manage the relationship with the then SGU. We kept in touch after she went off the SLGA and indeed she last popped in to see me at Gleneagles last year in the lead up to the Solheim Cup."

"Joan never minced her words - but I liked that because you always knew where you stood! Her contribution to golf in Scotland should never be underestimated, and she was very generous with her time and, almost as importantly, her advice - whether sought or just offered "
"She and Babs were stalwart supporters of ladies golf in Scotland, and the game will be poorer without her inimitable presence."
Play through, Joan, RIP

ELINOR GRANT (Chairman SLGA 1997)
"Joan was a member of Aberdour Golf Club and in 1997 was elected to be the first Lady to be the Captain of the Club and, it is believed, the first Lady to be elected Captain of any Scottish Golf Club."

"When, in 1997,  the S.L.G.A. moved the Association HQ to Drumoig Joan was President and was the mainstay of the Executive Committee that year. We had new offices, a new Secretary, a new Treasurer and a new Chairman.
Joan’s extensive knowledge of British golf infrastructure was invaluable that year and subsequently. Apart from being a very accomplished player over many years she was hard working, efficient, a good organiser and funny with it."

"She was Chairman of the L.G.U. in 1989/90 also --
In 1997 the Scottish Ladies team went to the European Team Championship in Finland where we came 2nd to Sweden. She was known to many of the Countries representatives there and highly respected"

"We kept in touch in spite of the demise of S.LG.A and her last comments to me were that she now knew nothing about anything."
- I did not believe that!"
" An outstanding and proud Scotswoman who brought honour to her Club, county and COUNTRY."

MAUREEN GIVEN (CHAIRMAN SLGA 1984)
"Joan and I were friends since 1949 having played together in the Girls Internationals of that year. Our paths crossed many times over the years golfing together then when I was SLGA Chairman she was Treasurer then on my appointment to the LGU Executive she was my Chairman."
"We saw each other frequently and her dedication to the game whether as a golfer or Administrator I did so admire."
"Ladies golf in Scotland is the poorer for her loss. Sleep well friend."

WILMA LEBURN (AITKEN) - CURTIS CUP
"I was very sad to hear of the passing of Joan Lawrence I knew Joan well during my competitive years as both a fierce competitor and proud Scot . Sad news indeed for Scottish Golf.

AILEEN WILSON -  (SCOTTISH LADIES AMATEUR CHAMPION - 1974 - Nairn)

"I was sad to hear of the recent death of Joan Lawrence. She was a talented golfer, and much respected in so many different official positions.
"I first met Joan in 1963 at the Scottish Championship at The Old Course Troon as it was known then. A friend and I were fortunate to be asked to be her ball-spotters in the Final."
" I was impressed by her controlled play and long running fairway shots, which resulted in a win. I realised how much she loved her golf, as well as being very competitive, and having a pawky sense of humour. "
"When the golf museum at St Andrews opened she donated one of her Scottish Championship Cup replicas to the museum.
"The Scottish golfing scene has lost one of the their true characters."

Aileen Wilson, Renfrewshire .

ISABEL CRAWFORD (WYLIE)-  SCOTTISH INTERNATIONIST , SLGA BOARD MEMBER AND LGU SELECTOR

Joan was a one off ...honest, direct, kind, and in all situations called a spade a spade....great golfer for the national cause...and a very astute administrator.....but a driver???  -------
Coming back from Killarney after the home internationals, the Captain and Vice captain had stayed on for a holiday thus Joan was given the job of driving our mini bus to Shannon airport. -- 6am  on a very stormy wet morning...visibility very poor ... pitch black and flooded roads.
The golf bags and suitcases were piled in the back, the team sitting in the middle, all suffering from excellent Irish hospitality the previous evening!” -- Right Wylie (Joan always used surnames) up here beside me to help to read the road signs”  - Marjory Ferguson (nee Fowler) was sitting immediately behind Joan with dark glasses on and very much hung over! - Ten minutes into our trip from a high bank above the road came four or five donkeys. Joan braked violently and skidded into the side... the donkeys brayed and neighed and dispersed....clubs, cases, bags and bodies were hurtled all over the bus ....and Marjory let out a scream.”” --
"What was that?" -
"Donkeys!" - replies Joan...
"Donkeys ?“shouts Marjory  -- “Not donkeys it’s your rotten driving”
Joan and I were the only ones to know the truth!!

In the 1980's and 1990's Turnberry  was in the 1st Division of the Greenlees Trophy and played alongside the McKay sisters Mhairi and Fiona (Norris)
She  was interviewed by the  Telegraph Newspaper in 2002 (Click to read more)  and told them she remembered when the 12-year-old Mhairi McKay would play in the women's Greenlees team. "Little old ladies were horrified when they found they had to play her," Dykes said. They would lose every time but they would also be won over by the child's charm and chat.

RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY STALWART MAE NOBLE HAS DIED. - Obituary and Glasgow Herald announcement

Mae Noble and Aileen Wilson
1967 Evening Time Scottish Ladies Foursomes Winners

It is with great sadness to announce the death of Mae Noble on Sunday 24th February.

Mae played for the RLCGA County Team from 1966 - 1988 and played for Scotland 7 times in the Scottish Vets team.

She was Haggs Castle Golf Club Ladies Champion 8 times and Erskine champion 13 times. She won the County Rosebowl in 1980 and 1982 and lost in the semi finals of the West of Scotland Championship in 1969 to Sandra Needham.
Some photos over the years - Click to enlarge

Her great County "partner in crime" was the late Jean Brown of Erskine and both were seen on many occasions, before and after county medals and matches, playing the fruit machines and having much laughter and fun.

The highlight of Mae's golfing career was winning the Evening Times Scottish Ladies' Foursomes in 1967 with Aileen Wilson (Haggs Castle) and having a couple of Holes in One in later years.

Mae then moved to Elie with her husband Harry (died in 2011)  and she played her golf at Elie Golf Club  until she was 86 when her balance became very poor.
She was very sad about this as golf was her life and she said then " The spirit is willing but the body is just not able'

In July 2018 Mae suffered a slight stroke and this further knocked her confidence and in October her daughter Lynda Smith (Douglas Park) and son Guy moved her back to Glasgow to a home nearby Lynda in Bearsden.

She would have been 91 on the 14th March 2019.

We send Lynda and Guy and all the family our sincere condolences.

The funeral is at Dalnotter Crematorium on Friday 15th March at 11:30am  -- Glasgow Herald Announcement

JESSIE DONALDSON 1923 - 2018 (WILL BE MISSED BY MANY)

Jessie Donaldson (right) with her good friend Nancy Chisholm
at the 2014 County Jamboree at Haggs Castle

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Ayrshire's Jessie Donaldson who was 95 years of age.

Her funeral is a Holmsford Bridge Crematorium next Friday the 16th November at 12:30 pm - GLASGOW HERALD NOTICE

JESSIE DONALDSON
1923 - 2018 ( by daughter in law - Aileen Donaldson)

Jessie whose Home club was West Kilbride was also a member of Ayr Belleisle for a time and an active member of Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association.

She was the Ladies’ Captain of West Kilbride in 1963.

She captained the West Kilbride Greenlees Team with a rod of iron throughout the 70’s. Her motto always was the team came first – no excuse not to play was ever good enough. And to come in after a match to report a lost match was just unthinkable.

Captain of Ayrshire LCGA then President in the late 80’s early 90’s she travelled throughout the West of Scotland flying the flag of encouragement for ‘her team’

She also attended and played in several Scottish Championships as far afield as Machrihanish, Southerness and Dornoch where she entertained and encouraged the ‘new girls on the block’. She will be remembered by many for leading the traditional party night singing with versions of songs, concocted by husband Tommy and herself, to traditional ballad tunes.

Until her stroke in 2007 she was still playing and enjoying competitive golf and would never miss her annual trip to the Banff Week where she met so many of her old friends and made many new friends.

Obituary - Joan Marshall, leading figure in Scottish women's golf

Leading figure in Scottish women's golf
Born: October 26, 1942;
Died: September 14 2018
JOAN Marshall, who has died aged 75, was a leading figure in Scottish women's golf as player, administrator and official over many years.
A member of Baberton Golf Club in Edinburgh for 41 years, she was club champion 10 times and set a course record of 68 in 1982, later bettered by daughter Karen by a stroke.
Her early promise saw her represent East girls against West girls in their annual match and win the Midlothian Junior championship. She played for Scotland Juniors against England at Barassie and Beaconsfield near London, winning both her ties at Barassie. At county level she won the Midlothian championship four times and the county Champion of Champions’ competition three times, continuing to represent the county till 2000. She played regularly in the Scottish Amateur championship, her best performance coming at Gullane in 1979 when she reached the semi final and was unfortunate not to earn a full cap as a result. She did later represent Scotland several times as a vet/senior.
At her peak she played off scratch and was particularly noted for her short game, consistency and ability to play under pressure.
She began to be involved in the administrative side of the sport, going on to hold several prestigious positions. In 1990 she was chairwoman of the Scottish Ladies’ Golf Association, having previously been a member of the executive committee. Latterly she was honoured with appointment as honorary association vice president in recognition of her services.
Between 2005 and 2008 she was Scottish selector on the Great Britain and Ireland committee responsible for selection of Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy teams. She was captain of many Scottish international teams at all age levels - junior, ladies, and vets/seniors.
She captained the team at the European Junior Ladies’ Team Championships in Belgium, the ladies’ team at the Home Internationals at Barassie in 1988 when she led Scotland to a clean sweep triumph and later in the European Team Championships at Pals in Spain and Wentworth. At senior level, she led the Scottish team in the Home Internationals and European team Championship in Holland. A Scottish selector in the 1980s, she was also captain and later president of Midlothian County Association for which she was awarded honorary membership.
At Baberton, she was ladies’ captain in their centenary year and was also awarded honorary membership of the club. In her role as captain she was successful and popular thanks to her empathetic nature allied to her ability to ease the pressure on players and her attention to individuals’ needs.
As testament to her worth as captain, many players remained lifelong friends with her. According to friend and fellow player Pamela Williamson, as an administrator, “she was capable, efficient and got things done.”
Joan Henderson was born in Edinburgh, the only child of George, a master baker, and Abigail nee Clark. Brought up in the city’s Kingsknowe area, she attended Cranley School in Polwarth. Golf was in the family with both parents excellent players. Her father was club champion at Baberton, Longniddry and Dalmahoy where Joan began playing and where her mother was also champion, as well as at Kingsknowe and Longniddry. The existence of practice netting in the attic reflected their enthusiasm for golf. In 1962, however, family loyalties had to be put aside as Joan faced her mother in the final of the Dalmahoy club championship and defeated her. After school she attended Moray House College before working in Standard Life, and later for 20 years as PA to the chief executive of Viewpoint Housing Association. On 2nd April 1966 she married Brian Marshall in St Andrew’s Church in Juniper Green and the couple who had grown up together as near neighbours enjoyed 52 years of happy marriage, initially living at Kingsknowe before moving to Juniper Green in 1975. They had two children, Stephen and Karen.
Again, golf featured largely in the family with husband Brian a low handicap player and one- time champion at Kingsknowe while Stephen was twice champion there and sister Karen has surpassed her mother’s total of Baberton championship successes with 14.
Unsurprisingly much of the couple’s social life was golf related with their house being a popular venue for parties after functions at the nearby Baberton club and at Hogmanay. The first fortnight in August was sacrosanct for family golf holidays to St Andrews where they supported the Eden and Strathtyrum tournaments, the latter of which Joan helped establish. Last year she was delighted with granddaughter Ella’s win in the Marshall Trophy, donated by her, at the Midlothian Girls’ Championship.
Away from the links, they were enthusiastic attenders with friends at rugby internationals at Murrayfield and home nations’ venues. Other interests apart from family, to whom Joan was devoted, included having been a cub leader locally, and gardening and upholstery which she studied at night classes.
Unfortunately, her latter years were marred with macular degeneration which prevented her playing golf and restricted her activities. She was very much a people person, bright, sociable and fun to be around who will be long remembered for her contribution to golf and much missed by many.
She is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren Ella and Grace.

DEATH OF PAST D&A COUNTY PLAYER ELEANOR FISKEN

Eleanor Fisken died last week aged 77 originally from Glasgow and a most enthusiastic member at Douglas Park Golf Club.
Eleanor played in many County matches for D&A and was a very true supporter of the team.
She moved to Nairn where she enjoyed golfing on that fabulous course.
She was a physiotherapist and worked at Inverness at Raigmore hospital until her retirement over 12 years ago.
She enjoyed walking with her faithful black Labrador and took up ornithology in the area around Nairn.
Eleanor enjoyed the company of many golfing friends from all over Scotland and will be fondly remembered
In 2008 at the Scottish Senior Supper at Deeside -- she will be remembered for taking part in what was a very entertaining evening as Prince Charming
