ERSKINE'S MARGOT STEWART HAS DIED

Margot in 2020
at lunch at Erskine GC

For those who knew Margot Stewart  (Erskine) - she died on the 15th August at the age of 99 .

Margot was born in her parents house where she lived in all her days and died at home (not many people could have managed that) -- She was a real feisty lady in fact a bit of a legend.

She was also  Past Secretary of Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association (1989 - 1991) and treasurer for the West Vets for 5 years retiring in 1999

Many hockey players may remember Margot - She was a Scottish Internationalist (Centre Forward) and then a Scottish International and West District Selector in the 60's and 70's

As she got older and took up golf she started to get a lot of bother with her knees (as many hockey players do !)  and when your webmaster met her at Erskine she would often ask me how my knees were !!

She used to meet the late Dorothea Hastings, Jean Brown and others every Friday for lunch regularly

She was a real character who loved her regular wee dram at the Golf Club and was able to drive down to the club until she was about 95 - Her car did get a few dents and scrapes !!

She finally got a taxi down to Erskine after that and it took many of of her friends at the club about 15 minutes to get her out the lounge as she would talk non stop to everyone on the way.

You just had to admire her determination and spirit !!

Carol and Alyson reach the finals of the Renfrewshire Winter Foursomes

Click to Enlarge to read results

Home players  Carol McNally and Alyson McGinnigle (Williamwood) played the Whitecraigs pairing of Lorna Boyd and Linda Hay in the RLCGA Winter Foursomes Semi Final a couple of weeks ago.

For a January day the weather and course were extremely favourable.

The home team took an early lead over the first several holes but with a magnificent Golden Ferret by Lorna the game sat at Williamwood 3 up playing 6th which was halved in birdies.

After halving 7th; Whitecraigs' ladies won 8th hole and Williamwood 9th.
The toughest hole on the course was halved. Williamwood won par 3 11th followed by Whitecraigs winning the tricky 12th.

After Williamwood winning 13th and the long 14th being halved this meant home duo dormie 4. Good drive by Alyson set up par and a win on 15th green.

A really friendly game in great County spirit.

Carol and Alyson now meet the winners of the other semi final between Alison Murray and Lesley Robertson (Ranfurly Castle) and Morag Key (Ralston) and Anita McMillan (Erskine)

RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY STALWART MAE NOBLE HAS DIED. - Obituary and Glasgow Herald announcement

Mae Noble and Aileen Wilson
1967 Evening Time Scottish Ladies Foursomes Winners

It is with great sadness to announce the death of Mae Noble on Sunday 24th February.

Mae played for the RLCGA County Team from 1966 - 1988 and played for Scotland 7 times in the Scottish Vets team.

She was Haggs Castle Golf Club Ladies Champion 8 times and Erskine champion 13 times. She won the County Rosebowl in 1980 and 1982 and lost in the semi finals of the West of Scotland Championship in 1969 to Sandra Needham.
Some photos over the years - Click to enlarge

Her great County "partner in crime" was the late Jean Brown of Erskine and both were seen on many occasions, before and after county medals and matches, playing the fruit machines and having much laughter and fun.

The highlight of Mae's golfing career was winning the Evening Times Scottish Ladies' Foursomes in 1967 with Aileen Wilson (Haggs Castle) and having a couple of Holes in One in later years.

Mae then moved to Elie with her husband Harry (died in 2011)  and she played her golf at Elie Golf Club  until she was 86 when her balance became very poor.
She was very sad about this as golf was her life and she said then " The spirit is willing but the body is just not able'

In July 2018 Mae suffered a slight stroke and this further knocked her confidence and in October her daughter Lynda Smith (Douglas Park) and son Guy moved her back to Glasgow to a home nearby Lynda in Bearsden.

She would have been 91 on the 14th March 2019.

We send Lynda and Guy and all the family our sincere condolences.

The funeral is at Dalnotter Crematorium on Friday 15th March at 11:30am  -- Glasgow Herald Announcement

Scotland Seniors

Scotland have been crowned Senior Men’s Home Internationals champions at Southerness yesterday once play resumed following a visit from the uninvited Storm Ali.
After losing the second day’s play due to the extreme weather conditions, a change to the original format was agreed with two sessions taking place today, which consisted of seven head-to-head battle, ensuring all three country versus country matches were played.
In the round robin format, Scotland, England & Ireland all won two out of three matches, so the title was decided on total game points scored across all three matches.

The Briggs Sisters do well at the 2nd Round of the Scottish Girls

Nairn Dunbar’s Kelsey MacDonald has led through the first two rounds of her title defence in the Scottish Under-21 girls’ Open Stroke-Play Championship at Dunfermline Golf Club.
With Jane Turner (Craigielaw), a shot behind after one round, falling away to a second-round 85, it looks as if only the Briggs sisters from Kilmacolm , Megan and Eilidh, lying a close second and third overnight, are the only ones who can stop the 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion completing a hat-trick of Under-21 titles.
Kelsey added a 75 to her opening par round of 72 and she would be the first to admit this was not one of her best efforts. She had no birdies and dropped shots at the short fifth, the 10th and long 18th.
Eilidh, the younger of the Briggs girls and the Renfrewshire county champion, took over second place with a 72 to be one shot off the pace on 148. Eilidh birdied the long third and the six but dropped shots at the fourth and 14th in halves of 34 and 36.
Megan, Scottish Women’s Champion in 2009, also had a 72. After her disatrous 9 at the 6th yesterday she had an outward half of two-under-par, with birdies at two long holes, the third and seventh. Unfortunately 2 bogeys in the 2nd 9 spoilt the charge !

Good luck to all the West of Scotland Players tomorrow
