CRAIGMILAR'S MARY RICHARDSON -- JUNIOR VOLUNTEER AND A HIDDEN HERO

As part of Woman & Girls’ Golf week, Scottish Golf have been catching up with the hidden heroes of golf in Scotland, and  we’re featuring Craigmillar Park’s Junior Convenor Mary Richardson to talk all things volunteering and golf…

Mary is currently the Junior Convenor at Craigmillar Park in Edinburgh, and she is also a member at Dunbar in East Lothian.

What’s the best thing about volunteering?

I have been involved as a volunteer with golf for many years with my club, county and with the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association (now Scottish Golf).
My current role as junior convenor is probably the most frustrating and time consuming one, but by far the most rewarding.
Watching and supporting young people as they learn and develop, make friends, have fun and fall in love with the game, as I have, is such a privilege.
Also, fantastic to see so many young girls take up golf and join our club – we currently have 25 girls, just over a 3rd of our junior membership and to watch them walking up the fairways, chatting, laughing and enjoying their golf, always puts a smile on my face.

WOMEN'S AND GIRLS WEEK AT SCOTTISH GOLF

Women & Girls’ Golf Week is here and it’s time to celebrate and hear from fabulous females involved in our sport.

The national awareness campaign, which will run across Great Britain and Ireland between Monday, 30 July and Sunday 5 August, aims to unite the golf industry in celebrating the successes and challenging the misconceptions and stigmas associated with women and girls in golf.

Throughout the online campaign, each day presents a different theme, where stories will be told of women and girls who are involved in the sport with the aim of creating noise across social media, with women and girl golfers everywhere invited to join the conversation using the #WhyIGolf

The themes are:
Monday: Careers – women working in the industry
Tuesday: Volunteers – the hidden heroes of the game
Wednesday: Health & Wellbeing – including celebrities who love the game and why
Thursday: Performance – opportunities for young, aspiring players Friday:
Participation – focus on participation programmes nationwide Saturday: Championships – key events and pathway for progression
Sunday: Round-up – highlights from the week
