ELAINE MOFFAT SPEAKS TO SCOTTISH GOLF AFTER HER VICTORY

Elaine Moffat - Scottish Seniors Matchplay Champion (Photo Courtesy of Scottish Golf)

Elaine Moffat from St Regulus Ladies Golf Club today capped a dominant week in Edzell by defending her Scottish Senior Women’s Open title.

Following her victory in the strokeplay earlier in the week, Moffat continued her good form right through the matchplay, eventually being crowned Champion with a 2&1 victory over Donna Jackson of Troon Ladies in this afternoon’s Final.
It was a tough final for Moffat who had to work hard for her victory against Jackson, finding herself 2 down after 8 before a birdie at the 9th helped close the gap to 1.  A solid back 9 then saw her take the title on the 17thgreen.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after her victory, Moffat said, “I’m quite elated and on a bit of a high.  I think it will sink in over the weekend, it’s unbelievable.
“The final was a lot harder than I would have liked, I made it very difficult for myself.  I played some nice golf but also some uncharacteristic golf.  I think that was just the pressure and Donna is such a tough opponent.  That was one of the hardest matches I’ve ever played.”
Moffat had earlier beaten Jennifer Bryans of Harburn Golf Club in the semi-finals 5&3 in glorious conditions in Angus while runner-up Jackson reached the final with a 4&3 win over Aileen Baker of Crail.
On the week’s host venue Edzell, Moffat added, “The course has been out of this world.  The greens are immaculate, the fairways are in tip-top shape, everything is so well thought out and for it to stand up to the rain yesterday is testament to how good it was.”

ELAINE MOFFAT STILL ON COURSE FOR THE DOUBLE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS

After today’s two rounds of matchplay at Edzell, the line-up for this year’s Semi Finals of the Scottish Senior Women’s Open are now confirmed.
In the top half of the draw, defending champion Elaine Moffat will take on Jennifer Bryans of Harburn Golf Club.
Bryans followed up a 4&3 morning victory over Sandra Jackson with another fantastic victory over second seed Allison Davidson by the same score line in the afternoon.  Despite entering the matchplay as 13thseed after rounds of 82 and 79, Bryan is now one match away from a shot at the title.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after reaching the semi-finals, Bryans said, “I’m delighted with today’s results and the way I played.  I’m feeling good about my game and there’s no pressure on me tomorrow.
“I played Elaine at Blairgowrie last year, so I know how good she is.  I just want to go out and enjoy it.  I’ll have a nice quiet night tonight and look forward to getting going again tomorrow.”
Bryans now faces the formidable task of trying to knock out defending champion, and this year’s strokeplay winner, Elaine Moffat.
Moffat cruised through her last-16 tie against Edzell member Ann Hay with a 7&6 victory, before progressing to the final with a 2&1 win over Iona McKean of Cottesmore Golf and Country Club.
Moffat told Scottish Golf, “I’m very happy to get through both games. I made a few mistakes but there was a lot of decent golf in there.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow a lot. It’s a great feeling to get into Friday.  I just need to regroup and reset for a new game of golf in the morning now.”
In the bottom half of the draw, Donna Jackson of Troon will face Aileen Baker of Crail for a place in the final.

Jackson reached the semi-finals with a 2&1 victory over Caroline Steedman of Murrayfield in the morning, before an impressive 4&3 victory over third seed Mary Smith of Tain.
Her opponent, Baker, who finished as runner-up in the strokeplay, narrowly reached the last-8 with a 1up victory over Ellie Whyte, before another narrow victory by the same score line over Liz Stewart in the afternoon.
Tomorrow’s Semi Finals will get underway at 8.30am, with Moffat and Bryans leading the way, followed by Jackson and Stewart at 8.45am. The final will then take place in the afternoon with a 13.20 tee off.

Elaine Moffat takes Scottish Senior Women’s strokeplay title at Edzell

From the Scottish Golf Website
Defending champion Elaine Moffat picked up where she left off on day 1 as she secured the strokeplay title at this year’s Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship.
A solid round of 76 in reasonable conditions saw her finish +2 overall and record a two-shot victory over Aileen Baker of Crail.
Baker posted the best round of the day, 75, to finish on +4 overall. Despite finishing strongly, playing her last 7 holes in -1, she couldn’t quite close the gap on Moffat and had to settle for a runner-up finish.
Speaking to Scottish Golf about her strokeplay victory, Moffat said, “It’s amazing, it’s still sinking in but it’s a really nice feeling.
“It was a hard game of golf and I was really aware that I needed to stay focussed.  There was definitely added pressure starting the day with the lead, but in a good way; it made me stay on my toes.  I didn’t play my best, but I made good decisions and I’m pleased to have got through it.
It’s something I’ve not won before so it’s lovely to have that under my belt. I’m going to enjoy the moment. I have to thank my coach Mike Rae who has been key in helping me to achieve this.”
On regrouping for the start of the matchplay tomorrow, Moffat continued, “I’ll go home, get all the gear sorted out and once I’ve done that I’ll just try and rest up and get my brain back in the right mode for another day on the golf course.”
Moffat’s nearest challengers at the start of the day, Sandra Jackson of Royal Dornoch and Alison Davidson of Stirling, fell away on day 2, both shooting +8. Both players will now look to regroup going into the knockout stages.
Last year’s beaten finalist, Sheena Wood, recovered from an opening round of 84 to make the matchplay with a solid second round of 78, keeping her hopes of going one better than last year alive.
The biggest leaderboard climb of the day belonged to Murrayfield’s Caroline Steedman, who bounced back from a first round 85 to shoot 76 today and finish in the top 16, having started the day in a tie for 34th.
The tournament will now move to the knockout stages where the top 16 scratch scores will progress to the matchplay, starting tomorrow morning with the cut falling at +14 after the strokeplay with 3 players missing out on their second round scores.

The top 16 net scores from the rest of the field will also now compete in the net matchplay.

Hannah Darling: Sixteen-year-old Scot believes she can be world's best golfer

Sixteen-year-old Scot Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) "definitely" believes she can be the world's best golfer as she bids to compete in the Junior Solheim Cup on home soil later this year.

Darling could be the only Scot named in Team Europe's squad for the junior event in Gleneagles during September. The teen has won six Scottish titles and even had compatriot and major winner Catriona Matthew caddy for her.

"I definitely think I can be [the best in the world]," she told BBC Scotland. "There would be no point in getting out of bed and doing what I'm doing if I didn't have that belief. It's something I can achieve if I put in the effort, play well enough and work hard enough."

Elaine Moffat leads the field at Edzell despite a double bogey at the last

From the Scottish Golf Website

The 2018 Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship title-holder Elaine Moffat made a strong start as she aims to defend her Scottish Senior Women’s Open title, posting a par round of 74 in excellent conditions at Edzell.

Moffat, the highest ranked player going into the week, carded four birdies and two bogies, before a double bogey 7 on the last saw her end Day 1 at the top of the leaderboard on level par.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after her round, Moffat said, “It was pretty good, I’ve enjoyed getting going. It was mostly a good round with a few wee blemishes, but we won’t dwell on them. There was enough good stuff in there to take home, enjoy and regroup for tomorrow.”
On being overnight leader and looking ahead to the rest of the week, Moffat continued, “It’s a good feeling. I would take it any day of the week, it’s a nice place to be. “It would be an absolute dream come true to make it to the final and have another shot at the trophy, but I know they are all coming for it, so you’ve just got to do one job at a time and not get ahead of yourself.”

Going into the second round of stroke-play tomorrow, Moffat (St Regulus) will start one shot clear of playing partner Alison Davidson from Stirling Golf Club, and Sandra Jackson of Royal Dornoch. Aileen Baker on +3, and Fiona Hay on +4 will also be looking for a good second round as they look to chase down Moffat at the top of the leaderboard. Last year’s defeated finalist, Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), will be looking to bounce back from a +8 round of 82 which leaves her in tied-16th and battling to make Thursday and Friday’s knock-out stages.

The 80-strong field will play another round of stroke-play tomorrow to crown the stroke-play champion, with the top-16 scratch scorers progressing to the knock-out stages, and the next 16 best net scores qualifying for the net match-play.

Heather MacRae wins PGA title as she fights cancer

Heather MacRae
By Martin Dempster (The Scotsman)

Heather MacRae vindicated her brave decision to continue playing competitive golf as she fights cancer by winning the Women’s PGA Professional Championship for the second time in four years.

The 35-year-old, who is going in for an operation on 14 June after being diagnosed with cervical cancer following a routine screening, overcame feeling tired in the final few holes of the 36-hole event to claim her victory at Trentham Golf Club in Stoke-on-Trent.

MacRae, who comes from Dunblane and is attached to Stirling, carded two 72s for a two-under total, winning by two shots from English duo Suzanne Dickens and Ali Gray in a field that also included former Solheim Cup player and captain Alison Nicholas.

“I am absolutely delighted and amazed, I can’t quite believe it,” admitted MacRae of her success, which, in addition to a top prize worth £1,000, secured a spot in the first women’s PGA Cup in Texas in October.

MacRae, a former British Women’s Stroke-Play champion who regularly plays against her male PGA professionals on the Tartan Tour, was two shots off the lead after an opening effort that included five birdies

She then made three birdies in the opening six holes in the afternoon to storm into the lead before running up a double-bogey 6 at the ninth but came home in one-under, a birdie at the 14th coming in the middle of eight pars.

The success came a day after MacRae had teamed up with Lee, a former European Tour player, to qualify for the PGA Fourball Championship..
