Gemma Dryburgh becomes Women & Golf Tour Ambassador

Gemma Dryburgh - Photo Courtesy of the LET

Today Women and Golf are excited to announce that Scotland’s highest-ranked female golfer, Gemma Dryburgh has become a Women & Golf Tour Ambassador.

Our mission at Women & Golf is to promote all levels of women’s golf and we are keen to have a stable of Ambassadors who reflect the diverse nature of our sport from grassroots to the elite end of the game. The aim is to follow their life in golf and hear first-hand from them what it is like to be part of a sport that we all love.

We will be following Gemma’s progress over the rest of the season and into 2022 as she heads back onto the LPGA Tour. This is her fourth season on the LPGA and she has had a strong return to the States, after events in Europe over the summer, finishing tied eighth at the Portland Classic. She is now heading to Arkansas and the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G.

A COUPLE OF PLACES AVAILABLE FOR ROYAL DEESIDE GOLF WEEK

Disabled get access to new facilities

The Scottish Disability Golf & Curling charity, will launch its second HUB later this month at the Elmwood Golf Club near Cupar, where golfers from as far afield as England and Northern Ireland will help tee-off the new project.

PGA Students from Elmwood’s College, representatives of the Elmwood Golfing Society and SDGC members , will provide some tips and tuition for existing golfing and new members with disabilities on Friday 31 January from 10:00

An “SDGC HUB” is a recognised club/facility that has a positive record on encouraging people with a disability to come and enjoy the game. Appropriate access, friendly and helpful staff and qualified instructors with experience of delivering coaching to a range of disabilities, which ultimately creates a positive environment and experience for our members.

Jim Gales, the Secretary of the charity said, “Funding, which helped to establish Scotland’s first disability hub  in St Andrews earlier this month, has come from Trusts and Foundations across the UK and each HUB session can include lessons, putting and other golf practice facilities, as well as the most important social side of the game, with members mixing with PGA Professionals, Coaches and our volunteers.”

Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open set for bumper weekend of entertainment

North Berwick, 22 July, 2019 – The Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open has announced the introduction of two themed days for the weekend to add to the fun at The Renaissance Club from August 8 to 11.
The tournament, co-sanctioned by the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, makes its debut at The Renaissance Club just three weeks after the men and is set to feature world-class talent including defending champion and major winner Ariya Jutanugarn, as well as Jeongeun Lee6, So Yeon Ryu, Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Scotland’s very own Team Europe Solheim Cup captain, Catriona Matthew.
Ladies Day, which will take place on Saturday 10th August, is new for 2019 and gives all women that attend the chance to not only watch the golf but take part in a golf clinic with European Tour coach Gary Nicol and enjoy live music from former Westlife star Brian McFadden and upcoming Scottish artist Hugh Kelly.

No golfing experience is required and welcome drinks will be served to all attendees on arrival as well as a free shuttle service being in operation from North Berwick Train Station to the golf course.
Participants will also be able to enjoy cocktail making masterclass sessions supported by Loch Lomond Distillery, relax with a complimentary neck and shoulder massage courtesy of The Macdonald Marine Hotel and witness a special guest Q&A in the public village hosted by TV personality, Emma Dodds with popstar Brian McFadden amongst other stars from the event.

Speaking about the initiative, Martin Gilbert, Chairman of Aberdeen Standard Investments, said, “The Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open is committed to showcasing this special event to as many new audiences as possible. It’s important for us to bring in new fans to golf and we hope that Ladies Day offers women, who might not have previous golfing experience, the opportunity to visit The Renaissance Club and have a fantastic day out.”

In addition to Ladies Day, Solheim Cup Sunday is also new to the 2019 tournament. In support of the Solheim Cup, which takes place at nearby Gleneagles from 9 – 15 September 2019, fans are encouraged to get behind the tournament by wearing Team Europe or Team USA colours to pledge their support of their favourite team in the biennial contest.
The best-dressed fan will receive a special Solheim Cup pin flag signed by all the European Team and there will be on the spot prizes for those that have made the effort.

Another special guest Q&A will take place in the spectator village with a number of Solheim Cup stars, giving fans the opportunity to ask what it is like to be part of one of the world’s greatest golf events.

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open is the last qualifying event for Team Europe ahead of final selection announcement on Monday 12th August as well being the penultimate qualifying event for Team USA. With plenty of last minute qualifying points on offer, it is all to play for.

Paul Bush, Director of Events with VisitScotland, said, “The Solheim Cup is one of the world’s greatest golf events and with it taking place just one month after the Ladies Scottish Open, it only felt right to put on a day for the fans to show their support. Scotland’s Catriona Matthew will captain Team Europe for the first time and we hope that spectators and fans alike can get behind her and all the players at the Ladies Scottish Open who are looking to qualify for each of the prestigious teams.”

This event will feature and promote East Lothian.  Scotland’s Food & Drink County marquee will showcase the diversity and quality of local produce that will be available for tasting and purchase and the Scotland’s Golf Coast on course activation zone will give visitors an opportunity to find out more about the golfing, accommodation and leisure offering in the area.

PICKELBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND IN GLASGOW

I know this has nothing to do with golf but --- WHY NOT GO ALONG TO THE PICKELBALL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world.  It is a central net, rebound game played with a ball and paddle (like a hard racket) and was invented in the USA over 50 years ago by a family who named it after their dog Pickles!

Pickleball is played on a court very similar to badminton and uses elements of racket skills from tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis.  However this game is unique - for one reason, no other sport has a 'kitchen' in the middle of the court!  The rules and scoring system also mean that pickleball is much more accessible by the young and not-so-young, making this a fantastic family activity for everyone to enjoy.

Now in Scotland we have many golfers who have taken up this sport and this holiday week end and yo fancy seeing the game and perhaps many of your fellow golfers why not go along to the National Badminton Academy in Glasgow which has free parking, 10 fantastic courts and competition-standard lighting.
There is a cafe next door at Scotstoun Leisure Centre, and the campus is also home to Glasgow Warriors professional rugby club

Dr Katrina Douglas Golf Psychology Workshop at Cowglen Golf Club

Alyson McGinnigle (Vice Captain)  Moira Kerr (Captain) ,
Katrina Douglas and Sue Fordyce
Cowglen Golf Club held a Golf Psychology Women and  Golf Workshop today set up by Cowglen's  Sue Fordyce.

Captain Moir Kerr welcomed Katrina to the workshop and reminded us of the fact that Katrina won the British Ladies Amateur in 1982 and played in the 1982 Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team.
She then played professionally on the Ladies European Tour, where she won eight times and was a member of the 1992 European Solheim Cup team.

Katrina introduced herself and told us that that when  her father who was a very good footballer, stopped playing football he started playing golf.

During her school holidays he lured her younger sister and her to the Normandy driving range in Renfrew and at  the range his friend, an international golfer himself (Cowglen's own Gordon Coshinvited the girls hit some shots and gave them both their first lesson.

‘It’s a shame Kitrina didn’t play when she was younger,’ he said to my father, ‘I think she could have been quite good.’  -- She was 17 at this time !

That comment set her father’s cogs turning and a few days later he put the following proposition to her:
‘Would you like to leave school and play golf for a year? If you don’t like it you can return and complete your A-levels.

If you like it, but aren’t very good, you can continue with your A-levels. But if you like it, and become good, no one can stop you, you are your own boss and you can always complete your studies later in life.’ -- READ MORE

Katrina did leave school and she had a wonderful golfing career - reaching the top.

Once her competitive career was over, Katrina became a BBC Sport Online golf columnist and in 2004 she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Achievement psychology of international women golfers at the University of Bristol.

Kitrina is presently a Women and Golf magazine columnist

The workshop was then held with great interaction with all who were present -- a break for lunch was provided by Cowglen GC  which was excellent

We had discussions of all aspects of visualisation, feel, concentration, and attention to detail with the aim to make us feel more confident, focused and to be better prepared for the season ahead.
We even had to draw elephants at one point which was really difficult for many !!

Carol and Alyson drawing Elephants, Noting down our various thoughts
and bottom right your webmaster trying to explain her pre shot routine

It was a great Workshop which everyone enjoyed.
Finally thanks were given to Sue, Moira, Alyson and all at Cowglen and of course to Katrina.

New campaign to tempt women tourists to play golf in Scotland

By Martin Dempster
In the countdown to the
Solheim Cup at Gleneagles in September, a campaign has been launched aimed at encouraging more women to travel to Scotland to play golf in the sport’s birthplace.

The VisitScotland video content campaign, which has adopted the #HerScotland hashtag, is a concerted bid to grow the number of female visitors from its current figure of just 12 per cent at a time when female golf participation in some European countries is in excess of 35 per cent.
The campaign features four women, including LET player Kelsey MacDonald, who are filmed enjoying a golf break which also involves other fun activities off the course.

“VisitScotland is proud to be doing something that no other tourism body has done before by investing in a female focused golf destination
marketing campaign,” said Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland’s chief executive.

“We pride ourselves on being a forward thinking and innovative organisation and I believe this campaign will
help to put the focus on Scotland as a female friendly golf destination.
“Scotland’ commitment to women’s golf is unquestionable with an investment in excess of £23 million since 2007 through our staging of both the Women’s British Open and the Aberdeen Standard Invesments Ladies Scottish Open cementing our reputation as the home of golf.”

Joining MacDonald in a campaign that will also be used to help support raise awareness of the 2019 Solheim Cup are Mar Hall head pro Kirstin Scott, Castle Stuart operations assistant Ellie Docherty and amateur golfer Susan Wood.

“It is a huge year for women’s golf in Scotland as we are set to host the Solheim Cup at
Gleneagles in September,” added Roughead of an event that aims to attract 100,000 spectators as North Berwick’s Catriona Matthew leads Europe into battle.
“The event offers us a significant opportunity to increase the number of female golfing visitors to Scotland.
“Add in a TV broadcast audience with the potential to reach more than 600 million households it means a lot of eyes will be firmly fixed on Scotland.”
