WEST OF SCOTLAND'S PAMELA PRETSWELL LEADS THE HELEN HOLM

Curtis Cup team selection Pamela Pretswell took up the running in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship as overnight leaders Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) - also in the GB and I team for Nairn from June 8-10 - and Rachael Goodall (Heswall) failed to follow up their splendid opening efforts of seven-under-par 68 apiece.
In fairness to Leona and Rachael, the conditions today were at least a shot or two more difficult than Friday's bright and not breezy conditions. The inward half, in particular, was not giving up many birdies.
Bothwell Castle's Pretswell, who lives at Hamilton, improved on her first-day 71 by one stroke and a nine-under-par 36-hole tally of nine-under par 141 was good enough to see her take over the clubhouse lead in the early afternoon, a shot ahead of a third Curtis Cup player, Amy Boulden from Wales (70-72), Rachael Goodall (68-74) and France's Perrine Delacour (70-72) who won the British girls open championship at West Lancs GC in 2009.
Leona Maguire fell back with a 75 for 143, the same mark as France's Celine Boutier (71-72), beaten in the final of the British girls open championship at Gullane last August and winner of the French Under-21 open girls title earlier this month.
Pretswell had seven birdies and two bogeys in her five-under 70. Five of her birdies came at the par-5 holes at which some of the top class players are playing short irons to get up in two ... such is the progress in ability and equipment compared with 10 years ago.
Pamela, who had been playing with the lady pros on the Ladies European Tour's developmental circuit (LETAS) to gain experience ahead of her plan to turn pro with a LET players' card in her pocket after the Q School at La Manga next January, looked in good fettle with birdies at the long second, fifth, long sixth, long ninth (out in four-under 34), long 12th, 13th and long 15th towards an inward half of one-under 36.
Well that she is playing, Pamela failed to master Troon Portland's closing holes over the two rounds. She had a double bogey 7 at the last in her first round and she bogeyed the short 14th and par-4 17th in Round 2.
The last Scot to win the "Helen Holm" was Heather Stirling in 2002. Whatever happened to Heather?
Last heard of caddieing in Florida - which is not a bad way to make a living!
Club pro's daughter Amy Boulden from the Conwy club birdied the long second, short eighth, long ninth and 17th in halves of 36. Her only bogey came at the third. Pars only for Amy between the 10th and the 16th, plus the very birdieable par-5 18th underline how difficult it was to improve on a score over the second nine.
Rachael Goodall was another who could not buy a birdie on the inward half until she succeeded at the 18th. The Heswall player had earlier birdied the long first, long sixth and long ninth, but bogeyed the short fourth and seventh, in reaching the turn in one-under 37. A bogey at the 10th put her level par but she had to settle for seven pars in a row before she got that birdie at the 18th for a par-matching 37 home.
Parisienne Perrine Delacour did well to return a three-under 72 considering she had a double bogey 5 at the short fourth and further shots dropped at the seventh and short eighth. She was able to get in out in level par 38, thanks to birdies at the fifth and long sixth, capped by an eagle 3 at the ninth.
Delacour did best of the earlier starters on the inward half which she covered in three-under-par 34 strokes with birdies at three par-5s: the 12th, 15th and 18th.
Last year's British women's open stroke play champion by half a dozen strokes at Royal Ashdown Forest and winner last weekend of the Irish Under-18 girls open stroke-play, again by a very comfortable margin, was grateful to get off the Troon Portland course today with a par-matching 75 because she was three-over for the day with three to play.
Then 17-year-old twin Leona birdied the short 16th, the par-4 18th and the par-5 18th.
Earlier things had not gone their usual smooth way for the +5 player who, at No 8 in the World's female amateur rankings, is the highest in the field (Charley Hull, who is No 4, pulled out before the tournament).
Leona's double bogey 5 at the short fourth was probably a shock to her system but she did get one back with a birdie 4 at the long sixth as she turned in one-over 39. That became two over when she dropped a shot at the short 10th ... and it was three over par when she ran up a 6 at the long 15th.
Then Maguire showed her class with that birdie-birdie-birdie finish. She won this title in 2009. Don't write off her this year, just yet ...
Celine Boutier, on the same 143 mark as Maguire after a three-under 72, was one of those who found the inward half under today's tougher conditions a wee bit frustrating.
Celine had birdie the long sixth and eagled the long ninth to be out in 35 (three under par|). She dropped one at the short 10th but got it back with a birdie at the long 11th, only for the course to hold her to pars over each of the last seven holess.

CURTIS CUP TEAM MEMBER PAMELA PRETSWELL HAS A GOOD FIRST ROUND IN THE HELEN HOLM

Six members of the GB and I Curtis Cup team in the leading 14 at the end of the first day in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon was good news for the LGU Selection Panel. Only Charley Hull (who withdrew earlier in the week) and Stephanie Meadow (a student at Alabama University) of the eight chosen to play against the Americans at Nairn Golf Club from June 8-10 are missing from a star-studded field.

Ireland's Leona Maguire, who seems to win any stroke-play event she plays in by a barrowload of strokes as befits a +5 handicap player ranked No 8 in the world, was the best of them but she had to share the pole position for the moment with Rachael Goodall (Heswall).

 On a dry, windless day, the par-5s at Troon Portland were all reachable in two shots and Maguire and Goodall plundered them in returning seven-under-par 68s. The 17-year-old (her twin Lisa, the European individual champion, has a wrist injury) from the Slieve Russell club birdied six of the seven long holes in halves of 36-32. Goodall started with an eagle 3 and eached the turn in six-under 32, before coming home in 36.

They are two shots clear of Curtis Cup choice Amy Boulden (ranked No 15 in the world) from Wales and France's former British girls champion Perrine Delacour (ranked No 42 in the world).. Third in the list of Curtis Cup players is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), joint fourth on 71. She was set to fill the third place overnight on 69 until she ran up a 7 at the par-5 18th.

 The leading 66 players and ties at the end of Saturday's second round over Troon Portland will go forward to Sunday's final 18 holes over Royal Troon.

After one round, there are exactly 66 players on 79 or better.

Jeff Collington, who works out yardages for the Ladies European Tour, has been at Nairn this weekend and he is giving the players the benefit of his knowledge in that direction. Jeff was also a former caddie on the LET.
Former LET players Gillian Stewart and Christine Langford are on hand to give the GB and I squad members short game tips and also the psychological side of the game,
"We have a very strong support team," said captain Matthews.
Stephanie Meadows is leaving early on Sunday afternoon to catch a plane back to the University of Alabama who gave her special permission to attend the selection trial. Not all American universities are so co-operative.
The players - and the public - will not know the team until it is announced on the Ladies Golf Union website - www.lgu.org - at 12 noon on Tuesday.

PAMELA HEADS FOR NAIRN FROM FRANCE WITH CONFIDENCE

Despite slipping from third to joint seventh over the final round, Hamilton-based Pamela Pretswell will head to Nairn for next week's Curtis Cup selection trial full of confidence that she can impress the GB and I selectors enough to be named for the June 8-10 match against the United States.
Pretswell, who played in the 2010 Curtis Cup match in the States and was the only amateur in the field, had rounds of 71, 73 and 76 for a total of one-over-par 220 in the Terre Blanche Ladies Open, a Ladies European Tour developmental circuit event, at the Terre Blanche Golf Resort in Provence, southern France.
She had three birdies on the front nine but none after the turn to offset three further bogeys.
Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll finished joint 15th with scores of 74-75-74 for 223. She birdied three of the last five holes and is beginning to find her feet as a tour pro.
Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) had scores of 77-74-80 for 231 and 27th place. Winner was France's Marion Ricordeau with scores of 70-73-68 for an eight-under-par total of 211 over the par-73 course. She won by three shots from the overnight leader, Australian Rebecca Flood (72-69-73 for 214).

Pamela does well in the 2nd Round in France

Curtis Cup team place contender Pamela Pretswell goes into Friday's final round of the Terre Blanche Ladies Open - a Ladies European Tour Access Series event - in the south of France in third place, only three shots behind the Aussie leader, Rebecca Flood.
Pamela, in good nick for next week's GB and I selection trial at Nairn, added a par-73 today to her opening 71 with birdies at the first, seventh and 18th being cancelled out by bogeys at the second, third and 14th.
The Bothwell Castle GC amateur's total of two-under 144 is three behind Flood (72-69) and one in arrears of second-placed Marion Ricordeau (France) (70-73). Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie) is lying joint 15th with 74-75 for 149 - two strokes ahead of Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) (77-74) in joint 21st place.
Gemma Webster from Glasgow shot 83-79 for 162 - 10 shots above the cut for the final round.

SLGA NAME INTERNATIONAL TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2012 SEASON

Fiona Norris (Hamilton) has been reappointed captain of the Scotland team for the Women's Home Internationals at Cork Golf Club, Ireland in September, and she is delighted to be leading the side over a course that ranks among her personal favourites.
“My husband, Patrick, is from Ireland and his family live about an hour from the course and I’m also friendly with Clare Coughlan, who is a member of Cork and is going to captain the Irish side this year,” explained Norris, a former international player and GB and Ireland team manager.
“Every time I visit my in-laws I try and have a game at Cork so I know it really well. It will be a really good test for the girls and a great place to try and repeat our win of two years ago.”
Norris was in charge at Hillside last year when Scotland lost all three matches, but she is confident the experience will have helped the youngsters coming through.
“Eilidh Briggs and Alyson McKechin were two teenagers who did well last year and we can also draw on experience of Louise Kenney, Kelsey MacDonald and Pamela Pretswell,” Norris added.
Elaine Cuthill, a member at Lanark but currently based in the Netherlands, has been named captain for the European girls’ team championships in Germany in July, and for the girls’ home internationals at Radyr in Wales the following month.
“I have captained the Under-16s for the past two years and I am extremely honoured and excited to be stepping up to the under-18s,” said Cuthill, who has a three-year Dutch placement as a member of Heineken’s marketing team. “I know I am going to be working with a talented and dedicated group of girls who will do Scotland proud in 2012.”
Laura Walker (Nairn Dunbar) is the new captain of the Scotland Under-16 team, while Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) will again skipper the Senior team for the European senior team championships in Lugano, Switzerland in September and at the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Elie and Earlsferry in October.

PAMELA LOSES IN THE QUARTER FINALS IN SPAIN

Wrexham teenager Chloe Williams won through to the semi-finals in the Spanish women's amateur international championship but Pamela Pretswell from Hamilton was beaten in this morning's round of the last eight at El Valle Golf Club, Murcia in the south-east of the country.
Chloe,a Junior Vagliano Trophy player for GB and I at Royal Porthcawl last June after losing to Bronte Law in a play-off for the Scottish Under-16 girls championship at Strathmore, had a marvellous win this morning over the rising French star Celine Boutier.
Celine was beaten finalist in last year's British girls open amateur championship at Gullane (where Chloe lost in the last 32 to Georgia Hall) and is ranked No 53 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings, compared with Chloe who is No 766 in the WAGR.
But it was Williams who triumped in this morning's quarter-final by one hole.
Chloe was twice down on the outward half, hving lost the third and the eight but won the fourth and halved the short sixth in birdie 2s.
The Welsh player changed the course of the match with winning birdies at the 10th and 11th to go into a one-hole lead.
The 12th was halved in birdie 2s.
Boutier squared the match with a birdie at the 15th but Williams won the short 15th with a par to regain a one-hole lead and halves at the last three holes saw Chloe run out a one-hole winner.
She then played Karolin Lampert of Germany in the semi-finals and lost in a closely contested match by 2&1
Pamela Pretswell, ranked No 66 in the WAGR, lost by 2 and 1 to Spain's Silvia Banon. The Scot did not play to the best of her capabilities and was two down after seven holes, having lost the third with a bogey 6, the fifth with a bogey and the seventh with another bogey sixth before conceding the eighth to fall three behind.
Pretswell had the proverbial mountain to climb after losing the 10th to a birdie to go four down. She claimed her first birdie of the match to win the 11th and halved the short 12th in birdie 2s.
Pretswell lost the 14th with a double bogey 6 to go four down wityh four to play. She staged a fighting finish by winning the short 15th with a par and the long 16th with a birdie 4 to get back to two down with two to play but a half at the 17th saw Banon go through to a semi-final meeting with I Nieuwenhuis of the Netherlands.

Hamilton's Pamela Pretswell, No 66 in the latest Women's World Amaeur Rankings list, is the only British player through to the quarter-finals of the Spanish women's amateur international golf championship at El Valle Golf Club, Murcia.

In this morning's first round, Bothwell Castle GC member Pamela, 11th of the 32 match-play qualifiers, beat Emilee Taylor from Lincolnshire by 2 and 1. The Curtis Cup Scot, a former Swiss amateur championship winner, followed up her win over Emilee by beating Quirine Eijkenboom (Germany) by two holes.

Charley Hull (Woburn), the No 2 seed who has gone up one place to No 8 in the World Amateur Rankings this week, lost by 3 and 1 in the second round to Emily Pentilla (Finland). The surprise defeat of the Spanish No 1 seed in the morning by the last of the 32 qualifiers, made Charley, on paper at least, the title favourite but she was mastered by her Finnish opponent.

Curtis Cup team contenders Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) (WAGR No 32) and Amy Boulden (Conwy) (WAGR No 40) - they are going to Nairn later this month for the three-day selection trial (as is Pamela Pretswell), lost their first-round ties.

English Under-15 girls champion Gabriella Cowley (West Essex) and Chloe Williams (Wrexham) went out in the second round.

Pamela wins through to the last 16 in Spain

No 2 seed Charley Hull (Woburn) marched into the last 16 of the Spanish women's amateur international championship at El Valle GC, Murcia this morning - but Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) and Amy Boulden (Conway), two players strongly tipped to be in the GB and I Curtis Cup line-up at Nairn in June were beaten.

Shock first-round result was the exit of the leading qualifier, Spain's Natalia Escuriola Martinez. She was beaten by the last of the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages, Ana Olarra, also of Spain.

Pamela Pretswell qualifies in 11th place in the Spanish Women's Amateur International Golf Championship

Controversial Charley Hull, only 15 but ranked No 9 female amateur in the world, showed her undoubted class by claiming the No 2 seed spot with a five-under-par tally of 137 in the qualifying rounds of the Spanish women's amateur international golf championship at El Valle Golf Club, Murcia today.

Kettering-based Woburn wonder girl Charley, holder of the English and Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play titles, shot 68 and a five-birdie 69 to finish one shot behind leading match-play qualifier Natalia Escuriola Martinez (66-70).

There have been no developments since the Ladies Golf Union offered to help her make arrangements to leave the Nairn Curtis Cup selection trial early on Sunday, March 25 so that she could fly to California for the Nabisco Kraft LPGA major event.

Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Amy Boulden (Conwy) and Pamela Pretswell, who have all committed to playing in the Nairn three-day trial, all did well in the Spanish qualifying.

Clyburn, who played in the 2010 Curtis Cup match in the States, and Boulden finished joint seventh in the stroke-play section of this championship on one-under-par 141, Holly 71-70, Amy 70-71.

Bothwell Castle's Pamela Pretswell, who also played in the 2010 Curtis Cup match in America, qualified in joint 11th place with 72 and 70 for level par 142. Pamela finished off with 12 straight pars after birdied the second and third and bogeying the short sixth.

No other Scots got inside the qualifying mark of 148 (only one of the five on that mark made it) which reduced the field of 95 to 32 for the match-play. Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) (79-76) and Jane Turner (Craigielaw) (80-75) finished on 155. Hannah McCook (Grantown-on-Spey) totalled 158 with scores of 83 and 75 while Rebecca Wilson (Grange, Monifieth) finished on 173 with rounds of 85-88.

Pamela Pretswell in top 20 after the 1st Round of the Spanish Womens Amateur Championship

England's Charley Hull, at the centre of a storm over her decision not to play in the Curtis Cup selection trial match at Nairn next month, did best of all the British players in the first qualifying round of the Spanish women's amateur international championship at El Valle GC, Murcia in the southeast of Spain today.
The 15-year-old Woburn GC member and World No 9 female amateur, holder of the English and Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play titles, shot a three-under-par 68 to be joint fourth overnight, two shots behind the Spanish pacemaker, Natalia Escuriola Martinez.
Amy Boulden (Conwy), who will be taking part in the Nairn three-day work-out, is next best, joint eighth, on 70
Woodhall Spa's Holly Clyburn, who played in the 2010 Curtis Cup match in America and is also bound for Nairn next month, had a par-matching 71 to be in joint 13th place.
Bothwell Castle's Pamela Pretswell, another with Curtis Cup experience and going to the Nairn trial match, shot a 72 to be joint 15th, well within the cut-off mark of the top 64 players at the end of the second stroke-play round, who will go forward to the match-play stages.
The other Scots in the field will need to dig deep to make the cut. Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) is in joint 72nd place after a 79. Jane Turner (Craigielaw) had an 80 (jt 77th). Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) in jt 87th after an 83 while Rebecca Wilson (Grange, Monifieth) is sharing 90th place in a field of 95 after an 85.

Only Clare Queen and young Carly Booth of the five Scots in the field beat the fourth-round cut in the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School at La Manga, Spain today. 
Lynn Kenny lost her card and the other Scots failures to get through to the crucial fifth round on Thursday were Glasgow's Gemma Webster and Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) who fortunately retained her amateur status and is a near certainty to be named in the GB and I team for the Curtis Cup match at Nairn June 8-10. 
Yorkshire's US-based Jodi Ewart leads the field by four shots with an 11-under-par tally of 277.
The top 30 at the end of 90 holes will gain playing rights on the 2012 LET circuit and Queen looks as if she can start planning her playing schedule now. With the final round to come, The Carrick at Loch Lomond player is lying joint 10th after rounds of 70, 70, 74 and 75 for one-over-par 289 over the North and South courses. 
Comrie's Booth has hung on in there but now needs to find an extra gear for a last-day push to move up from joint 43rd into the top 30. Carly is joint 43rd meantime on 296 after rounds of 76, 72, 74 and 74. 
Kenny, playing out of Archerfield Links, dropped over the limit mark with a final round of 78 for a total of 303 to be placed joint 76th in the four-round totals. It is the first time she has lost her player's card since she gained LET membership some years ago. Her earlier rounds were 77, 72 and 76. 
Webster (78-72-79-73) and Pretswell (767-76-77-73) finished the 72 holes in joint 70th place on 302. 
Another top amateur to miss the cut was Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) with 74-79-75-78 for 306. Like Pretswell, Tidy is almost certain to be named shortly by the LGU selectors in a preliminary Curtis Cup squad.

CLARE QUEEN COPES WITH Q SCHOOL PRESSURE TO LIE JOINT 7th

Playing in the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School is rated by many of the competitors the toughest, nerve-jangling test of all of because their livelihood over the next 12 months depends on whether they gain one of the 30 players' card awarded after a 90-hole marathon at La Manga, Spain.
Clare Queen, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, it would seem, is in "the zone" at the moment after two rounds of 70 for four-under-par 140 have her sharing seventh place in the field of 101. US-based former Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire is setting the pace on 137 with rounds of 70 and 67.
Queen, attached to The Carrick at Loch Lomond, shot three-under par at the more difficult South Course today, boosting her bag of birdies over the first 36 holes to nine with sub-par figures at the first, 10th, 14th and 16th. Her one bogey, at the 15th, came too late to knock her off course for the day.
The first target for all the players is to survive the cut after four rounds to the leading 50 and ties. Apart from Queen, none of the other four Scots is within that mark going into the third day although Carly Booth (Comrie), Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) and Glasgow's Gemma Webster all raised their game from disappointing first rounds to return 72s.
Booth is sharing 52nd place after a three-birdie, two-bogey one-under par 72 at the South course for 148. 
Dunblane's Kenny is in joint 56th position on 149.
Webster had three birdies and four bogeys over the North Course to be joint 65th on 150.
GB and I amateur international Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) is a certainty for selection for the Curtis Cup match at Nairn should she fail to gain pass marks at the Q School.
That might well be affecting her psychologically because two rounds of 76 for eight-over-par 152 and joint 79th place does not represent her normal form. It's too much of a coincidence that Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale), who is in the same amateur-waiting-to-turn pro position as Pretswell, is also having a dire tournament so far at La Manga. The 2010 British women's open amateur champion is lying 91st equal on 153 after scores of 74 and 79.

GEMMA WEBSTER JOINS CLARE AND PAMELA AS QUALIFIERS

There will be five Scots in the field for the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School's five-round Final stage, starting at La Manga on Sunday. Lynn Kenny and Carly Booth, exempt from the pre-qualifier which ended today will be joined by Clare Queen (The Carrick at Loch Lomond), GB and I international amateur Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) and, thanks to a sparkling sub-par fourth and final round, Glasgow's former US college circuit player, Gemma Webster.
With the field of over 200 split into two groups, Queen finished joint 10th on five-over 293 in Group A while Pretswell came joint 18th on 296 in Group B. Webster surged from joint 44th overnight to joint 28th with a one-under-par 70 at La Manga North for a total of 299, making it through with a shot to spare.
Heather MacRae missed out by a single stroke after she too finished with a good score, a 71 at La Manga North. But for a disastrous opening round of 81, MacRae would have made it with ease.
Same goes for Majorca-based youngster Lauren Mackin. She had three respectable scores but was dragged down by a second-round 84.
Other Scots who failed to gain pass marks were former Scottish women's champion and now St Andrews Links Trust caddie Linzi Morton, Nicola Melville, Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll and Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S CLARE QUEEN AND PAMELA PRETSWELL STILL DOING WELL AFTER 3 ROUNDS AT LA MANGA

Seven Scots look doomed to be eliminated after Wednesday's fourth round, leaving only Clare Queen and Pamela Pretswell from north of the Border to advance to join compatriots Lynn Kenny and Carly Booth in the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage at La Manga, beginning on Sunday.

Only Clare Queen and Pamela Pretswell, of the nine Scots are in the qualifying zone with one round to play.
The field of 204 players is split into two groups from which the top 35 and ties in each will advance to the 90-hole Final Stage which starts at the same venue on Sunday. Clare Queen (The Carrick at Loch Lomond) is lying joint 10th in Group A after a two-over-par 71 in the third round at La Manga North. She is on three-over-par 218 - five shots off the pace.
Bothwell Castle GC member Pamela Pretswell, still an amateur, is joint 17th in Group B after a two-over-par 75 at the more difficult La Manga South course.
The situation is not so rosy for the other Scots in Group B. Glasgow's Gemma Webster (78 for 229) is currently joint 44th; Heather MacRae (Gleneagles Hotel) (75 for 230) is joint 51st, Linzi Morton (84 for 235) from Tulliallan is joint 81st and Nicola Melville (unatt) (85 for 249) is 99th.
MacRae had an 8 at the long fourth, an eagle at the 18th and five birdies.
Morton had a triple bogey, a double bogey and no birdies in halves of 44-40.
Similarly, in Group A, Pamela Feggans (74) from Patna, Ayrshire, Katy McNicoll (74) from Carnoustie and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin (72) after all on the 228 mark and sharing 54th place.

CLARE QUEEN AND PAMELA PRETSWELL DO WELL ON DAY 2 OF THE EUROPEAN TOUR SCHOOL

The 200 competitors have been split into two groups of 100. The top 35 and ties in each group at the end of 72 holes will go forward to the Final Q School over five rounds, beginning on Sunday.

Queen shot a two-under-par 71 over the more difficult La Manga South course to be lying joint seventh in Group A on 145 at the halfway point of the pre-qualifier. She had four birdies between the sixth and 13th holes.
Pretswell, still an amateur with selection for the Curtis Cup match in June a possible nice "consolation" if she delays turning pro, surged up from 30th to joint 17th in Group B on 147 after a par-matching 71 at La Manga North.
It was the proverbial game of two halves for Pamela - four birdies in reaching the turn in 31 but no birdies in an inward half of 40- which included a double bogey 6 at the 11th.
Former Scottish amateur champion Linzi Morton from Tulliallan - a professional caddie on the St Andrews Links Trust's "books," slumped in Group B to a share of 35th place with a 78. She struggled with 43 blows over the inward half.

Glasgow's Gemma Webster is alongside Morton on 151 with a 72 which was a mixture of six birdies and seven bogeys.

Former British women's amateur stroke-play champion Heather MacRae (Gleneagles Hotel) is well out of it - at the moment - in joint 64th place on 155 although she did improve to a 74 while Nicola Melville had a 79, also over La Manga North to be joint 96th on 164.

Back in Group A, Katy McNicoll from Carnoustie and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin have it all to do to reach the top 35 qualifiers over the next 36 holes. Katy is joint 56th on 154 after a second-round 79 while Mackin nosedived from a 72 to an 85 and a share of 69th place on 156.

LINZI AND LAUREN LEADING SCOTS AT LA MANGA Q SCHOOL OPENER

Top Scots at the end of the first day of the Ladies European Tour School pre-qualifying competition at La Manga, Spain today (Sunday) were Linzi Morton, the 2001 Scottish women's amateur champion from Tulliallan, and Majorca-based youngster Lauren Mackin.
Morton's pro career has never got off the ground over the past decade due to a wrist injury in the first instance. But she has earned enough money as a professional caddie at the Old Course and other St Andrews Links Trust courses to have another go at making it through to the Ladies European Tour.
There are just over 200 competitors in the first pre-qualifier, being contested by two groups from which the leading 35 and ties in both at the end of 72 holes will go on to next week's four-round Final Stage, also at La Manga.
Morton is lying ninth in Group B after a par-matching 73 at the tougher La Manga South Course.
She had a roller-coaster round with five birdies, one double bogey and three bogeys.
Mackin is joint 14th in Group A after a one-over-par 72 at the "easier" La Manga North Course. Originally from Renfrewshire, Lauren had three birdies and four bogeys, a dropped shot at her last hole, the ninth, costing her the satisfaction of a par round.
At this venue, Clare Queen had a 74 which put her in joint 29th position but Pamela Feggans is well outside the qualifying zone already with a 75 for a share of 43rd place.
At La Manga South, Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), retaining her amateur status until she sees how she fares at Q School, had a 76 to be joint 30th.
Gemma Webster from Glasgow is joint 60th after a 79 which included two double bogeys.
Heather MacRae (Gleneagles Hotel) looked only a shadow of the player who won the British women's amateur stroke play title at Nairn in 2005 as she returned an eight-over 81 which also included two double bogeys.
Nicola Melville required 46 blows for the inward half in compiling an 85 which leaves her an uphill struggle from joint 96th position.
