CARMEN GRIFFITHS WINS THE U18 SCOTTISH MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

From the Scottish Golf Website

Aboyne’s Carmen Griffiths claimed the biggest win of her successful career when she beat Hamilton’s Katie Graham 4 & 2 in the final of Scottish Girls’ Amateur Championship at Strathaven.

The 2019 European Junior Vagliano Trophy team member came into the championship in second place on the 2021 Scottish Girls’ Order of Merit and she showed why she is currently ranked only behind Curtis Cup hopeful, Hannah Darling, on that list with a series of impressive victories in her march to the final.

The new champion’s toughest match came in the second round when she was taken to the 18th hole by fellow Scottish international, Rachel Foster, from Prestwick St Nicholas but she then beat Parkstone’s Alice Webb 6 & 5 in the semi-finals before proving too strong for Graham in the afternoon.

Graham had previously knocked out top seed, Forfar’s Robyn Fowlie, in the second round and then beat Shrewsbury’s Isla McDonald-O’Brien 6 & 5 to earn her place in the final.

Griffiths went ahead as early as the second hole of the final and was three ahead after ten holes before Graham clawed one back on the 11th. Griffith increased her lead again with wins on the 12th and 14th and though Graham won the 15th that reprieve proved to be short-lived when Griffiths sealed victory on the very next hole.

Lindsay Main
claimed a popular victory on her home course in the concurrent Scottish Girls’ Net Amateur Championship.

The Strathaven player beat Elderslie’s Ava Graham 2 & 1 in the semi-finals and then collected the trophy following an emphatic 7 & 6 triumph over Paisley’s Katie Dunn in the final. She was pulled back to two up when Dunn won the seventh but then won five successive holes from the eighth to clinch the Aynsley Reid Salver.

Earlier Dunn had reached the final after securing a 7 & 5 victory over Lucie Barclay from Kilmacolm.

Katie Graham Seals Last Grasp Win Against Top Seed

From the SG Website

Katie Graham from Hamilton Golf Club

Katie Graham from Hamilton
booked her place in the last four after beating top seed Robyn Fowlie in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Girls’ Amateur Championship at Strathaven.

Graham secured a convincing 4 & 3 victory over Royal Troon’s Freya Russell in the morning but then had to come from behind to claim a last gasp victory over Forfar’s Fowlie on the 19th hole.

Graham’s opponent in the last four is Isla McDonald-O’Brien from Shrewsbury who also had to go to the 19th hole in the morning before beating Hazlehead’s Rachel Mathieson and then defeated Ruby Watt from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre 4 & 2 in the last eight.

In the other semi-final Aboyne’s Carmen Griffiths will face Alice Webb who plays out of Parkstone in Dorset who won against Jennifer Lynagh from Caldwell Golf Club by 2&1

Griffiths had a straightforward 8 & 7 victory over Strathmore’s Kirsten Miller in the first round but then had a much tougher test against Rachel Foster from Prestwick St Nicholas after lunch.

Foster reached the quarter finals of the recent Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Gullane where she lost to eventual champion Chloe Goadby and against Griffiths she led all the way until her opponent drew level on the 15th and then went ahead for the first time in the match on the 18th hole.

The semi-finals of the concurrent net match play competition will see Elderslie’s Ava Graham face Strathaven member Lindsay Main and Paisley’s Katie Dunne goes up against Lucie Barclay from Kilmacolm.

SLGA NAME INTERNATIONAL TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2012 SEASON

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SLGA
Fiona Norris (Hamilton) has been reappointed captain of the Scotland team for the Women's Home Internationals at Cork Golf Club, Ireland in September, and she is delighted to be leading the side over a course that ranks among her personal favourites.
“My husband, Patrick, is from Ireland and his family live about an hour from the course and I’m also friendly with Clare Coughlan, who is a member of Cork and is going to captain the Irish side this year,” explained Norris, a former international player and GB and Ireland team manager.
“Every time I visit my in-laws I try and have a game at Cork so I know it really well. It will be a really good test for the girls and a great place to try and repeat our win of two years ago.”
Norris was in charge at Hillside last year when Scotland lost all three matches, but she is confident the experience will have helped the youngsters coming through.
Eilidh Briggs and Alyson McKechin were two teenagers who did well last year and we can also draw on experience of Louise Kenney, Kelsey MacDonald and Pamela Pretswell,” Norris added.
Elaine Cuthill, a member at Lanark but currently based in the Netherlands, has been named captain for the European girls’ team championships in Germany in July, and for the girls’ home internationals at Radyr in Wales the following month.
“I have captained the Under-16s for the past two years and I am extremely honoured and excited to be stepping up to the under-18s,” said Cuthill, who has a three-year Dutch placement as a member of Heineken’s marketing team. “I know I am going to be working with a talented and dedicated group of girls who will do Scotland proud in 2012.”
Laura Walker (Nairn Dunbar) is the new captain of the Scotland Under-16 team, while Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) will again skipper the Senior team for the European senior team championships in Lugano, Switzerland in September and at the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Elie and Earlsferry in October.

Hamilton's Fiona Norris, sister of LPGA Tour player Mhairi McKay, retained the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship at Hayston Golf Club today
Fiona added to her previous title wins in 1988, 1992 and 2009 by beating the No 1 seed, Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), county captain and daughter of the former Scottish PGA secretary, by 4 and 3 in the final.
Norris, the No 3 qualifier, siezed the initiative by winning the first two holes, the second with a birdie but Lloyd was not overawed and hit back with birdies of her own at the third and sixth to square the match.
Norris was two up at the turn after winning the seventh and eighth. The writing was on the wall for Lloyd when she went three down at the 11th and four down at the next which Norris birdied. The remaining holes were halved in par before they shook hands on the 15th green.
It was the sixth time Lloyd had lost in the final since 1998, the year after she won the Lanark title.

Pamela Pretswell is Runner Up in the Scottish Under 21's Stroke Play Championships

Scottish schoolgirls title-winner Kelsey MacDonald added another national tournament victory to her collection when she won the Scottish Under-21 girls’ open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Powfoot Golf Club on the shores of the Solway Firth today.
Kelsey had three fine sub-par rounds of 70, 70 and 71 against the women’s par of 74 for an 11-under-par total of 211.
She led at the end of the first round, was headed by Scottish universities title-holder Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) at the end of the second round but kept her nerve and her touch to prevail by one shot from Pamela after the third and final round.
Pamela had shot a seven-under 67 to surge to the front after 36 holes but she could manage “only” a par 74 at the last time of asking and that left the door open for MacDonald’s steadiness to win the day.
