JENNIFER RANKINE - WINS THE CLARK ROSEBOWL AT WEST KILBRIDE AND YOUNG RACHEL FOSTER IS A NAME FOR THE FUTURE
Jennifer Rankine and Rachel Foster (Photo Courtesy of June Kerr) |
She is off 9 and scored 83 on Tuesday and 78 on Wednesday (CSS 73 both days). With these scores she qualified comfortably for the Clarke Rosebowl.
In the first round she beat Lesley Atkins, a former Scottish Girls' Champion and winner of the Scottish Schoolgirls Championship, by 2 & 1, and in the afternoon won by the same margin over the more experienced Hannah Scott.
In this morning's semi-final against 15 year old Jennifer Rankin (Haggs Castle) , Rachel was not just as accurate as she had been all week but still played a very good game and holed some super putts. Jennifer's golf was excellent and included 5 birdies which helped her to win by 5 & 4.

CONNIE JAFFREY SETS THE PACE AT WEST KILBRIDE IN THE SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
West of Scotland's Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) leads the field after the first day of stroke play qualifying at the Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at sun-kissed West Kilbride today
She did not drop a shot during her four under opening round of 69, earning her the sole lead into the second day.
Four other Scottish women’s squad players finished one shot behind: Chloe Goadby from St Regulus Ladies, Germany-based Rachael Taylor from Golf Club am Reichswald, and Carnoustie Ladies’ Ailsa Summers and Jessica Meek.
Among the group of players tying for sixth at two under, is the 2014 Scottish Amateur champion Gabrielle MacDonald from Craigielaw, while last year’s winner, Clara Young from North Berwick, opened with a par 73 and past Curtis Cup player Eilidh Briggs from Kilmacolm
The field will compete over a second round of stroke play tomorrow, before the top-32 qualifiers enter the matchplay stage from Thursday. The 18-hole final is played at West Kilbride from 8.30am on Saturday morning.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S EILIDH BRIGGS AND CONNIE JAFFREY FINISH IN TOP TEN OF THE ST RULE TROPHY
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and local girl Lauren Whyte (Regulus) tied for third place on 216 in the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews three behind the winner France's 15 year old Pauline Roussin-Bouchard.
Eilidh, who missed most of last season with injury, shot 74, 68 and 74, while Lauren, a student at Baylor University, Texas, reeled off three 72s in her best performance at this high level for a year or two.
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) tied for eighth place on seven-under 219 after an outward half of five-under 33 over the Old Course had her lying joint third with nine holes to play. But she took two-over 40 shots to come home for a 73. Still, she might have run into a bit of form just in time for the Scottish women's championship at West Kilbride this week. She was beaten by Gabrielle Macdonald in the final at Prestwick two or three years back.

PAMELA PRETSWELL QUALIFIES FOR USA WOMEN'S OPEN
Pamela Pretswell secured the fifth and final spot on three-under-par 141 (70-71) in the qualifying 36 hole European qualifier for the 2016 USA Women's Open Championship.
The Scot from Hamilton said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This is my first time playing in US Women’s Open qualifying and I’m looking forward to playing in California.
"I’ve played in two British Opens but to go over to America will be amazing and a good experience. I just tried to stay patient all day and make as many birdies as we could.
"I think I was very patient which is something I’m not always good at but it’s been coming for a while, so it’s nice. It’s massive and I’m looking forward to next month and hopefully I can continue playing good golf.”
Other Scots who did well but not quite well enough by finishing in the top 20 were Carly Booth (T8 on 143: 71-72), Kylie Walker (T11 on 145: 71-74) and Vikki Laing (T18 on 147: 71-76

Alyson, title-winner in 1987, 1990 and 91, had never lost in a county final until this one.
Wood went one up with a par at the third and was still one up at the turn, the sixth being halved in birdie 4s.
Henry birdie the par-5 11th to square the match but was bunkered at both the 12th and 13th, losing them both to go two down.
Wood went three up with a par at the 14th and was conceded the 15th and a 4 and 3 victory
In the morning semi-finals, Wood beat defending champion Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) by 2 and 1 while Hendry beat Kirstin Brown (Strathaven) 3 and 2

D&A CHAMPION IS LORNA McCLYMONT FROM MILNGAVIE
Lorna McClymont - 2016 D&A County Champion with Karen Maxwell (Captain) and Enid Young (President) |
In the final, Lorna won by 5 and 4 against former Scotland international Claire Hargan (Regulus), who was six times champion of Midlothian between 2003 and 2009
Hargan beat top seed Jillian Farrell (Cardross) by 5 and 4 in the morning semi-finals when McClymont won at the 19th against Lorraine Campbell (Cardross).
Lorna was fast out of the blocks with a birdie at the first hole.
Claire won the second, then Lorna won the third and McClymont was four up at the turn.
That became a five-hole lead when Lorna won the 10th. Hargan won the 12th but it was too little too late. After halving 13, won the 14th with a birdie to regain a five-hole lead and claim her first county championship
In the semi-final against Farrell, Hargan won the 10th and 12th before holing a long putt on 13 to go three up.
The 14th was halved and Claire managed to sink a putt on 15 for a 4 to win by 4 and 3.
In the other semi-final Lorna McClymont played steadily but Lorraine Campbell will be rueing a few early putts missed which saw her fall to three down at the turn.
Lorraine was still three down after 14 before she rallied to win two holes and then birdied the last hole to square the match and take it down the 19th.
McClymont won at the 19th with a 4 after Lorraine was bunkered.
The Bronze championship final was a closely fought affair between Mandy Allen (Milngavie) and Rae Strang (Cardross). Rae triumphed by two holes.

AYRSHIRE GIRLS' SPRING SILVER SALVER
Sarah Ramsay - centre with trophy |
5 girls battled the windy conditions at Ardeer today in Ayrshire Girls' Spring Salver competition. Sarah Ramsay (West Kilbride) had an excellent round of 84, nett 71 which matched the standard scratch and wins the trophy. Close on her heels was local girl Luisa Gibson with a nett 73 followed by Cristina McCracken (Troon Ladies) on 75.
Katie Ronnie (Barassie) and Susie Walsh (Troon Ladies) (pictured above) - played 9 holes from forward tees in the Pre-handicap competition. Both girls played lovely golf and have a very good 'feel' for the chipping shots and putting - a delight to be with and we look forward to seeing more of them in the future.

WEST OF SCOTLAND PLAYERS JILLIAN, EILIDH, HAZEL, JENNIFER AND EMMA ALL MAKE THE CUT AT THE HELEN HOLM
Jillian Farrell - Leading West of Scotland Player Photo - Courtesy of Lorraine Campbell |
with player quotes from Iona Scott of Scottish Golf
Much colder and windier conditions on Day 2 of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke play championship made scoring a bit more difficult (CSS 80 compared with a CSS of 79 yesterday) than Day 1 with overnight leader Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies) slipping back from a five-under 67 on Friday to a two-over 74 at Troon Portland.
That gave the 18-year-old defending champion from Northern Ireland, ranked No. 9 female amateur in the world, a 36-hole tally of three-under 141, a mark which was equalled late in the day by Sweden's Linda Lundqvist with rounds of 69 and 72.
Linda's world ranking is No. 872 and her handicap is +1.5, compared with Mehaffey's +4.5
In fact, Lundqvist should have gone into Sunday's final round over the Royal Troon championship links with a one-shot lead but she bogeyed the 18th.
The 19-year-old from Sweden said: “I am very pleased as it is my second time in Scotland and I’m not used to this wind. I did not expect to be leading going into the final round, so I am very happy.”
Mehaffey, who will enrol at Arizona State University in August, said:
The 19-year-old from Sweden said: “I am very pleased as it is my second time in Scotland and I’m not used to this wind. I did not expect to be leading going into the final round, so I am very happy.”
Mehaffey, who will enrol at Arizona State University in August, said:
“I got off to a bad start with two bogeys and I was a wee bit shaken up coming away with a bogey on one of the easier holes but then I made some really good pars out there and a couple of birdies. So I felt in control even though I had a couple of bad shots and still managed to get pars out of it, and that’s what it was about today.
“To put yourself into contention after two rounds is all you have to do and so I’m looking forward to tomorrow. If it blows, it will just make it more exciting.”
The joint leaders are two shots clear of Belfast Queens University student Jessica Ross (70-73 for 143) who had six birdies over the first 13 holes but bogeyed the 17th and double-bogeyed the 18th.
Anna Bailey (Kirby Muxloe), one of the very early starters, is lying tied fourth on 144 with a pair of 72s, alongside Ireland's Maria Dunne whose second-round 73 saw her run up double bogey 7 at the long 15th and also a bogey 5 at the 18th.
Leading Scot is 16 year old Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) who led with only six holes to play in this tournament last year before finishing third. This time round she is tied 10th on 147 (72-75) alongside Abertay Dundee University student Nastja Banovec from Slovenia (73-74).
McWilliam was going well after birdies at the 10th and 11th but, into the stiff breeze over the closing holes, she bogeyed the 14th, 15th and 18th.
Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough), winner of a USA college conference title - her eighth win in America over the past four years - earlier in the week, slumped to a 79 for 151.
Meghan had a triple bogey 7 at the sixth and six bogeys. Her only two birdies came at the fourth and 17th.
The wind was into the players' faces for most of the inward half so they had to make their score on the front nine.
At the end of the day a total of 68 players with tallies of 162 and better qualified for the final round on Sunday over the testing Royal Troon links.
The most notable non-qualifier was young Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe). Sophie and Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall), are well placed in the LGU Order of Merit table to gain the two automatic selection places for the Curtis Cup match in June - provided the table positions remain the same AFTER the "Helen Holm," the last counting event before the GB and I team for Dun Laoghaire in June is named at 2pm next Thursday.
Sophie, who tied for eighth place in last year's "Helen Holm," missed the cut at Troon out by one stroke with 80-83 for 163.
Rochelle made cut the OK.
Ireland won the international team event run in conjunction with the first two rounds of the "Helen Holm."
