Day 1 AT THE LADIES SCOTTISH OPEN AT DUNDONALD

Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open at Dundonald Links
Five Scots in the mix behind leader Nocera

NEWS RELEASE
Gwladys Nocera from France set the target with a five under par 67 on day one of the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open at Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire.

Nocera delighted the Scottish fans as she topped the leaderboard after a busy first day at the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open - a day that was turned yellow in aid of Beatson Cancer Charity, with many players and spectators wearing yellow to show their support.
The Frenchwomen's total of five under par after round one was good enough for a one-shot lead, ahead of Hannah Burke, Becky Morgan and Nanna Koerstz Madsen with a clutch of players one shot further back on three under par.
Norcera, winner of the 2008 Ladies Scottish Open, shot an impressive five birdies on the front nine, with an additional birdie on the 18th. Just one blemish on an otherwise perfect card came at the par four 10th, where the talented Frenchwomen dropped a shot.

Five Scots including Pamela Pretswell are in close contention and within the top 15
She said: The first couple of holes were pretty hard. It was raining and windy so we had the full experience of Scottish weather. But then it got really good and sunny, not too windy, so we had a good back nine. Sometimes the approaches were close and the putting was good. Everything was good at different times.
“It is a difficult course if the wind picks up because there are a lot of bunkers in play off the tee and the greens have a lot of double slopes, so it’s really hard to read the lines but we’ve done a good job.”
In the amateur team competition Sweden's Camilla Lennarth, with playing partner Jamie Govan, lead by one shot on 10 under par.

WEST GIRLS 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION IS CANCELLED

Sadly, numbers for the West Girls 60th Anniversary Celebration did not reach what we hoped for to fulfil the objectives or bringing together former and present "Girls" and committee members to celebrate 60 years of the Association with a special occasion at West Kilbride Golf Club on the 4th August.
As a result we have decided to cancel the event.
It is just a pity it's not going ahead but the golfing calendar is busy and with the Open and the Ladies at Dundonald, national events during July and August, these may have been a contributory factor to us not getting more support.

SCOTLAND REACHES SEMI FINALS OF 2ND FLIGHT IN ICELAND

From the Scottish Golf Website

Singles wins for Hannah McCook and Eilidh Briggs helped Scotland’s ladies to an enthralling 3-2 win over The Netherlands in their opening match play bout in the European Team Championship Flight B.

The foursomes pairing of Jess Meek and Heather Munro gave the Scots a flyer as they cruised to a 5&3 win in the top match, before Hannah McCook secured a second point with a dramatic 19th hole victory.

The Dutch levelled the match as Connie Jaffrey and Rachael Taylor found themselves on the wrong ends of defeats, but recent University of Stirling graduate Briggs held her nerve to post a 3&2 win in the final match to give Scotland a chance to top the second flight.

THE BELLE OF THE BALL IS STILL GOING STRONG AT 80

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
She was the Queen of the Green, the Belle of the Ball and recently blew out the candles on her milestone 80th birthday.
BELLE ROBERTSON, MBE is regarded as one of the best Scottish golfers of all-time, an amateur legend who won countless titles at home and abroad and is still going strong, playing off a three handicap at her beloved Dunaverty on the remote west coast.
In the week of the Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie GC, how fitting to talk with one of the nation’s favourite females. We caught up with Belle at The 19th Hole…

Belle, a happy 80th birthday! We trust it was a fantastic occasion?

BR: “Thank you. I always think of my birthday as being on The Masters weekend, given it is 11 April. I also always used to say my birthday was the same day as Seve’s, but he was two days before. It’s always a nice way to celebrate with The Masters, you have people in the house and you are viewing the golf at night.
“This year I decided to have a weekend birthday, so we were watching Augusta for four nights and thinking about my birthday. We had some family and friends staying as well so that was nice and obviously we had a European winner in England’s Danny Willett.
" I actually celebrated the weekend with Fiona Mackay, Mhairi Mackay’s sister, and her two boys. They came and stayed and we had a great time. I’m just on the edge of Campbeltown in Kintyre. I was born in nearby Southend and now find myself here, which is very nice.”

Belle and Scotland football manager Gordon Strachan at the 2016 Annodata Scottish Golf Awards

Belle: “The Masters almost always has something exciting about it. Tiger’s chip in, Nicklaus’ famous putt. I was lucky enough to be able to go to the Masters twice in my lifetime, and the first time was when Sandy Lyle won in 1988. That was very special to be there. I guess not many Scots can say that.
" I was actually in the Eisenhower Cabin, as they call it, in the upstairs balcony when Sandy was going in below. The downstairs rooms used to be where the security men for President Eisenhower stayed. He owned that cabin and when he died he donated it back to Augusta.
“My ticket was as a guest from Sir John Carmichael, a past captain of The R and A. I was fortunate as he said ‘don’t struggle with the crowds towards the end, watch the last few holes on television with me’. It was very, very exciting.”

You enjoyed so many career highlights, winning the Ladies British Stroke Play (four times), Scottish Ladies Amateur (seven times) and the Dunbartonshire and Argyll Ladies (10 times), to your various international team triumphs, including playing in four Curtis Cups. It’s great to hear you are still enjoying your golf today…

Belle: “I don’t maybe play that much, but I played the other day at Machrihanish. Two helicopters of Mr Trump, one his personal one, and another one, landed on the golf course, as they had popped over from Turnberry to enjoy a game. So it was an exciting day!”

Which club are you a member of?

Belle: “I’ve always used Dunaverty as my home club. I started off golf there and the family farm was in Southend. Jock MacVicar (golf writer for the Scottish Daily Express) and myself play there.
"Jock and I were both born in Southend, 10 miles from Campbeltown. My handicap is three but I don’t play enough. If you don’t, you don’t get a chance to put it up! I’ll need to play in a few more competitions. I think, in all honestly, I probably play off about six, but I haven’t played a great deal in recent years.”

Did you ever consider professional golf?

Belle: “I was in about my 40’s when professional golf started and, of course, I was too old then to start in that. At my stage, married and with all that entails, it wasn’t an exciting prospect for me.”

The Senior Ladies have been battling it out for the Scottish title at Fortrose and Rosemarkie this week, how much competitive senior golf have you played?

Belle: “I’ve never played senior golf at national level. I was lucky enough to play golf at the highest level until I was 50. I decided I had been away so much that that was me finished full-time. I played in a Curtis Cup at the age of 50 at Prairie Dunes, Hutchinson, Kansas (in 1986) and I thought I’ll never ever do that again, so I thought that was a great way to bow out.”

Was that a career highlight?

Belle: “I remember playing over the Old Course at St Andrews in the national Scottish Ladies’ Championship of 1986, thinking ‘I’m not going to make the Curtis Cup unless I win this’. I was 50, and I wanted to play in it again for one last time, so it was the only championship that I went into knowing I had to win it.
"And I managed to make myself win, with ‘Tip’ Anderson’s help! I was lucky enough to have him as a caddy. He was a wonderful caddy, he really was. He was always so positive, gave me great boosts. It was a cold day, I was ahead and was clawed back, but we came through and won.
"Jill Thornhill, the English girl, she was 46, and I was 50, and we had a few others in their 30’s in that Curtis Cup team. We were the first-ever GB and I Curtis Cup team to win on American soil. Trish Johnson was in that team. It was a great success.”

How closely do you follow the amateur scene now and what are your hopes for Scottish Golf in the future?

Belle: “It’s difficult to read amateur coverage in the press, but I was recently at the Dunbartonshire and Argyll Ladies County Championship, they invited me up for the day. It was nice to see that. I was also at the Annodata Scottish Golf Awards earlier this year (pictured top with co-host Dougie Vipond and Crail GS’s David Roy), which was a fantastic night. I’ve never been to an event with so many people like that and I’ll fondly remember it for a long time.
“Most golf I see now is on television. Unfortunately, the amateur game has changed a lot. I went to the Curtis Cup in Ireland this year and there were five girls aged 17 in the American side. It would appear now that if you are an amateur you don’t finish school, you go straight to your job on the circuit as a professional golfer, unlike my day. So many amateur players now want to turn pro and it would be great to see some stay as amateurs longer. There were no Scots players in the team at the Curtis Cup, but I think these things come in waves. Let’s hope in Scotland over the next five years there is rejuvenation of young girls getting into golf.”

Thanks Belle, and enjoy your 80th birthday year!

Scottish senior women's match-play at Fortrose and Rosemarkie

SHEENA WOOD TEST FOR DOUBLE- CHASING ALEX GLENNIE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) is through to the semi-finals in her bid to become the third player in as many years to win both the stroke-play and match-play titles at the Scottish Senior Women's Championships at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.
But first she will have to beat a formidable opponent in Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) in the round of the last four on Saturday morning.
Wood, beaten in last year's final by Martine Pow (Selkirk) who is not defending, won through at the 21st against Lorna McKinlay (Dunnikier Park) after being three up on the 10th tee in the quarter-finals.
Glennie beat Linda Dyball (Pitreavie) by 3 and 2 to reach the last four.
The other semi-final will feature Royal Dornoch American member, Ashley Rose and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose). Rose was taken to the 18th green in both her ties while Sutherland also won by one hole in her quarter-final against No 2 seed Fiona de Vries (St Rule).

KILMARNOCK BARASSIE'S ALEX GLENNIE WINS SCOTTISH SENIORS STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Alex Glennie wins title at high-scoring Scottish senior women's championship
By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Despite having only one birdie over 36 holes, Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the Scottish senior women's amateur stroke-play championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club today.
Her rounds of 77 and 78 for 13-over-par 155 gave her a two-stroke victory margin from Fiona de Vries (St Rule) (76-81) with Mary Smith (Tain) a further two shots back in third place with scores of 79 and 80.
Overnight leader Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) could manage only seven pars in a second-round 86, which included two triple bogey 7s, and her 11-stroke slump saw her slide down to a fourth place finish.
It was another day of nightmare scoring. One player took a 16 at the par-5 fourth and reached the turn in 66. There was one 11 and six 10s among the other returns.
Even the winner found the going tough. Glennie was out in 39 with a double bogey 6 at the second and another shot shed at the ninth. She then bogeyed four holes in a row from the 10th, dropped another sot at the 16th before notching a lone birdie at the 17th for halves of 39.
Runner-up De Vries had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 17th in an inward 41 for an 81.
An even local knowledge could not save Mary Smith (Tain) from running up two 7s on outward 43.
The leading 16 players qualified for the match-play championship over the next two days.
There was a five-way tie on 170 for the 16th place and, after a comparison of the second rounds, Lynne Fraser (Fortrose and Rosemarkie), who had an 80, was named the last match-play qualifier and, therefore, top seed Glennie's opponent in the first round.
Those who lost out in the countback were Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) 85, Lynn Terry (Cruden Bay) 85, Louise Graham (Carnoustie Ladies) 88 and Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar) 89.

Renfrewshire Girls win Kennedy Salver The West of Scotland Junior Inter-County matches

Back - L to R - Anna MacKenzie, Heather Mushet, Emily Crusher
Front -- Sophie Kyle, Ellie Wilkie and Niamh Kennedy

The West of Scotland Junior Inter-County matches were played on Monday (yesterday)  at Loudoun Gowf Club in Ayrshire.
The heavy rain around the time of the girls going out in their singles matches didn't deter their spirits and once it passed over the remainder of the afternoon was fine.
Renfrewshire got off to a good start winning all of the morning foursomes matches giving them 3 points.
Holders Lanarkshire were next on 1.5 points, Ayrshire's point was a concession from D &A who unfortunately had late call-offs, then D & A who gained a half.
D & A won two of their singles matches, Ayrshire won 3 so the fight was on between Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.
Lanarkshire made up some ground from the morning deficit winning 3 matches plus the concession giving them a total of 5.5 points, but Renfrewshire's two afternoon wins along with the concession was enough to get them over the line with a total of 6 points.
Congratulations Renfrewshire on your win, but also very well done to all the girls selected to play for your county........the officials and spectators enjoyed it immensely.
We look forward to next year when Dumbartonshire & Argyll will be our hosts.
