East Renfrewshire Juniors v West Girls Match

The West Girls suffered a defeat yesterday (Sunday 28th April) in their annual match against East Renfrewshire Juniors .  — East Renfrewshire Won 3-1.

Although not the result the girls wanted, it was a great day for golf and a big thanks to East Renfrewshire GC for their hospitality and continuing with this great match - we will be back !

6 RLCGA County Squad players and 6 County Members took part in a Practice Match at Gleddoch GC on Sunday.  On a perfect day for golf, Gleddoch showed up well, with the condition of the course and the views.

Following advice from Karyn Burns, a format was devised to advantage the Members and to challenge the Squad.  

It proved to be so successful that the Members won (!)  but we’re sure all players found it a worthwhile experience.

CARMEN GRIFFITHS IS RUNNER UP IN THE UNDER 16’s GIRLS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

A bogey-free round of 70 (6 under par) for Carmen Griffiths sees the Aboyne Golf Club youngster finish this year’s The R&A U16 Girls’ Amateur Championship at Fulford in second place on - 3 under par 222

Grace Crawford (Gullane) finished in a very creditable 14th place and 3rd in the Under 14 age group on 2 over par 228

Italy’s Francesca Fiorellini secured a notable double on English soil after securing a wire-to-wire victory in the R&A Girls U16 Amateur Championship at Fulford. 

Eight months after winning the English U14 Girls Open Championship, Fiorellini eased to another title after a comfortable three-shot victory over an international field in York. The 13-year-old, who plays out of the Olgiata Club in Rome, was a model of consistency in the final round as she closed with a three-under-par 72 to lift The Angela Uzielli Trophy on a winning total of six-under-par 219. 

After Hannah Darling won last year’s inaugural event at the venue, Carmen Griffiths made a strong final day move in pursuit of more Scottish success, posting a superb bogey-free round of 70 to secure the runner-up spot on a three-under-par total of 222

Ayr Belleisle Ladies Golf club held a free come & try golf session on Thursday night. We had a fantastic turn out with over 35 women & girls attending. 

We are working with South Ayrshire Council & Scottish Golf to help get more women & girls into the game. 

Local businesses donated refreshments & everyone left with a goody bag full of information & some golfing bits & bobs. We introduced the basics and got everyone swinging a club and hitting balls. 

We plan to hold a follow up event on Friday 10th May at 6pm where we hope to introduce our new ladies to the 6 hole short course.

CARMEN AND GRACE IN TOP 10 AFTER ROUND 2 OF U16 GIRLS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

England’s Maggie Whitehead produced the best round of her young life to move into contention at the Girls U16 Amateur Championship at Fulford, with overnight leader Francesca Fiorellini still ahead.

Whitehead, aged only 12-years-old, came into the championship to simply further her experiences, but surged through the field into second place after a superb two-under-par 73 on day two.

The chasing pack includes Scotland’s Grace Crawford (Gullane) --  on one-over-par, another 12-year-old thriving this week. The Gullane player holed a 25 feet putt on the 18th for par and said, “I played well and I was playing with two of my friends in Maggie and Libby (Bell), which was really nice. I’ve moved up the leaderboard further than I thought, so it’s all to play for tomorrow.” -- Watch Video below to see Grace

JILLIAN FARRELL RECEIVES THE MOST IMPROVED PLAYER IN THE C - USA GOLF PROGRAM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The historic second season for the Charlotte women's golf program took home major milestones on Tuesday as Cecilie Finne-Ipsen, Siarra Stout and Jillian Farrell all received the program's first-ever postseason awards from Conference USA. 

D&A's Jillian Farrell (Cardross) was named C-USA's most improved player after lowering her stroke average down nearly four shots from 78.61 in her freshman campaign to 74.78 this season. 

Along with Finne-Ipsen and Stout, Farrell was the only other 49er to play in all 26 rounds this season scoring four rounds under par with a tie for 10th at the fall-ending Palmetto Intercollegiate.

MIDLOTHIAN COUNTY CAPTAIN LOUISE FRASER WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

Midlothian Captain Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) won the Midlothian County Championship at Dalmahoy yesterday against Rachael Livingston (Baberton)

In the final Louise got off to a head start after 2 holes but Rachael was hot on her heels and got it back to 1 hole after the 8th. Louise made birdie at 9, eagle at 10 and par at 11 to get a few more holes under her belt. Rachael made Louise concentrate hard to the end where the match finished at the 16th hole.

SOLHEIM CUP TICKETS FOR THE OPENING CEREMONY

The Opening Ceremony Day of The 2019 Solheim Cup is set to kick off the biennial event in style with a festival of live music, entertainment and family activities on Thursday 12 September.

Tickets for the Opening Ceremony Day are just £10 per adult and free for those aged 16 and under, and the aim is to make the event accessible and appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds, from golf fanatics to those who have never previously been to a sports event.

Pia Babnik from Slovenia wins the Helen Holm in style and Shannon and Chloe win the team event

Slovenia’s Pia Babnik led from start to finish at the 2019 Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship as a bogey-free round of 66 helped the youngster claim a seven-shot victory over France’s Charlotte Bunel. 
 With a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round, Babnik continued to play outstanding golf on the links at Royal Troon Old Course, picking up four shots in as many holes on the front nine in Ayrshire.

Scotland’s Shannon McWilliam and Chloe Goadby were winners of the annual team event, taking home the Ladies’ Club Silver Salver by beating England by 15 shots 

Shannon also finished as the top Scot as this year’s event on six-under-par. 

Speaking to Scottish Golf, Shannon said: “It was another really good result for me today, I have finished in the top five at the Helen Holm quite a few times now and to win the team event with Chloe was really nice as well. 

It’s been a great week and one I will remember after making my fourth hole-in-one of my career at Royal Troon Portland on Friday.”

HELEN HOLM - DAY 2 - SHANNON MCWILLIAM IS THE LEADING SCOT

Slovenia’s Pia Babnik continued her good form on Day 2 at the 2019 Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open with a three-under-par round of 69 at Royal Troon on Saturday. 

 Babnik, who is currently seeking a spot in Europe’s PING Junior Solheim Cup Team, remained consistent to extend her lead over the 120-strong field to three. 

Sitting five shots behind Babnik, Shannon McWilliam is the top Scot after 36 holes. She had 4 birdies in her inward half of 33.

Speaking to Scottish Golf following a bogey-free back nine, which also included four birdies, McWilliam was pleased with how she played, saying: “I played pretty solid on the back nine today, I had eagle putts on 11 and 12 that didn’t drop but overall I am quite happy with the way I finished my round.” 

 McWilliam is one of five Scots  inside the top 10 and with 18 holes left to play, the youngster from Aboyne is looking forward to playing in one of the final groups out tomorrow: “I am looking forward to playing Royal Troon Old Course tomorrow, all I can do is go out there and give it my best shot. It will be an exciting day.”

JESS MEEK AND CHLOE GOADBY ARE LEADING SCOTS AFTER ROUND 1 OF THE HELEN HOLM

With temperatures soaring on the West Coast, it was Slovenian youngster Pia Babnik who hit the ground running on day one at the 2019 Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open. A sensational opening round of 66 at Royal Troon gave the youngster a two-shot lead over the rest of the field.

Babnik, who is the highest ranked player in this week’s field, carded nine birdies in total on her way to finishing six-under-par ahead of round two tomorrow. 2018 Scottish Champion Jess Meek (Carnoustie) and Chloe Goadby (St Regulus) both carded 3 under par round of 69 to be the leading Scots 

Scotland’s Shannon McWilliam also enjoyed the “ace” conditions in Ayrshire. The youngster from Aboyne recorded a hole-in-one at the 142-yard Par 3, eighth on her way to carding a two-under-par 70.

McWilliam, is one of six Scots currently in the top 10 with last week’s Scottish Girls’ Open Champion, Hannah Darling, also two-under-par after day one.

Speaking to Scottish Golf following her opening round, McWilliam said:

“The pin was at 142-yards, playing uphill and slightly into the wind, I was trying to hit a 150-yard shot and hit a perfect eight-iron that bounced once and went in. I didn’t actually see it go in, I only knew because of my mum’s reaction.” 

Analysing the rest of her round, McWilliam admitted that there is still room for improvement, adding:

“It was a very mixed bag out there for me today, two double bogeys, one bogey, five birdies and a hole-in-one. I felt like I could have been a lot lower but I am looking forward to round two tomorrow.”

The 120-strong field will play another round over Royal Troon Portland on Saturday, before the cut is made for the final 18 holes over Royal Troon Old Course, on Sunday.

Masters drama helped bring stroke victim back to health -- the last day of the #Golfhealthweek

As Tiger Woods’ remarkable triumph at the Masters captivated the golfing world last Sunday, the event brought back fresh memories for an amateur golfer who credits the sport for aiding her recovery from serious illness. 

 Vivien Hamilton, a 62-year old member at Douglas Park Golf Club, was as enthralled as anyone as Woods sensationally claimed his first major title since 2008 at Augusta National. Seven years ago, the tournament held extra significance for Hamilton as she persuaded doctors to allow her home from a hospital ward so she could witness the final 36 holes during her recovery from a stroke.

That was the second serious health issue to strike Hamilton who underwent treatment for cancer in 2009. Now back enjoying her golf as part of the blossoming women’s membership at the Bearsden club on the outskirts of Glasgow, Hamilton’s story is among the highlights of this week’s first ever Golf and Health Week. It is a dedicated digital and social media campaign, co-ordinated by the R&A and involving various golf bodies, designed to shine a light on the sport’s various health benefits and encourage golfers, lapsed golfers and non-golfers on to the fairways.

“In 2009 I went through chemotherapy and was very sick. It was a tough time,” recalls Vivien. “I remember being in my bed, looking out to the sky and always thinking ‘I wonder what it would be like to get out there again’. I came down to the course after the treatment was over and heard one of the ladies coming off the course grumbling and I thought about what is important in life. I was thinking ‘I’ve been living in a bedroom’. It was so amazing when I eventually played again, just wonderful. I felt there was still a life.”

Hamilton eased her way back by playing nine-hole medals to keep her handicap active, while everyone at Douglas Park was so supportive. Yet when she was hit with the stroke in 2012, she had to dig deep again.

“It was really awful. It’s affected my lifestyle, not only my golf,” adds Hamilton. “I hate how tired I am, I still have challenges from it, but you keep going. I was in hospital for a week and remember asking the consultant if I could go home for the Masters over the weekend! It was just amazing to come out of a ward and see it at home.”

On the road back to health, Hamilton says golf has played a huge role in her recovery. The research manager for art at Glasgow Museums continues: “I have a stroke on the right side of my body, but one of the things the consultant said to me was to get back out there on the golf course when I could. The stroke affected my speech and spatial awareness, and as 62-year-old Vivien Hamilton thrilled to Tiger Woods’ triumph at the Masters on Sunday, the Douglas Park golfer recalled how the tournament played a big part in her recovery from a stroke. so for the consultant the idea of having to concentrate and hit a ball was fabulous. It took me a few months though, as the reality of the tiredness hit me hard. That first hit of the ball after my health problems felt so good. It is just a beautiful feeling of achievement. Golf, physically, has been good for me, as well as the fresh air, with some nice company who share your values.”

Today’s final day of Golf and Health Week shines a light on club level, offering clubs the opportunity to highlight their work in this area and share positive stories. The collaborative campaign has been running using the hashtag #Golfhealthweek and included content on the physical and mental health benefits of playing golf and projects being delivered by golf bodies and clubs, primarily within Great Britain and Ireland but also in other countries including Canada and Australia.

Hamilton enjoys the camaraderie and competition at Douglas Park and is delighted to be reaping the sport’s health benefits.

“There is a real buzz around the club,” she says. “I love the friendship, the fresh air, the nature and being away from work. Robert Irvine, the professional, has given me lessons.

“Golf is a game that is so good for your soul. During my illnesses, the girls here were so supportive. I thought I would get better at the sport, but never have! I’m now off a 32 handicap, but I’m just delighted to be enjoying and playing golf. I love it.”

A beautiful day at Turnberry today for the semi final and final of the Ayrshire Ladies's County Championship.

This morning Louise Duncan booked a place in her first final by winning her match against Sharon Lambie and Audrey Thompson reached her second final winning on the 18th green against Jenny Linklater.

Great golf was played by both players in the afternoon, a good match to watch for the 20 ladies who came to support.  
Louise won the match on the 15th hole with her 4th birdie of the round.

Sky Sport focus on Douglas Park Golf Club as part of R&A Golf and Health week

A dedicated campaign to raise awareness of the health benefits of golf for people of all ages and abilities is underway.

The first ever Golf and Health Week is taking  place from 15-19 April and aims to encourage golfers, non-golfers and lapsed golfers into taking part in the sport and today on Sky Sports.

RLCGA Caddies/Team Outing at Cochrane Castle

RLCGA Caddies Match

5 RLCGA County players and 10 Caddies combined to have a fun afternoon at Cochrane Castle GC on Sunday. 

The competition was a ‘Waltz Triam Stableford’, the course was in very good condition and the weather was calmer than forecast.

Soup and sandwiches were enjoyed by all after the games, and the course was ‘Mastered’ by the team of Donna Jackson, Sandra Littlejohn (Erskine) and Marilyn Muir (Old Ranfurly) 

However all players were ‘winners’ as a lovely afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Thanks go to all at Cochrane Castle for making us most welcome, to Marilyn Muir for organising the Caddies and to the Team players for taking part.  

Renfrewshire is very lucky to call on such a large group of loyal Caddies, and the Squad are very appreciative.  Special thanks go to Gillian McGinlay for stepping in after Jennifer Rankine had to withdraw, due to qualifying for University Finals

HANNAH DARLING SECURES HOME VICTORY AT THE SCOTTISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Scotland’s Hannah Darling led from start to finish at the 2019 Scottish Girls’ Open Championship to claim the title at The Home of Golf on Friday afternoon.

Taking a three-shot lead into the final round, the 15-year-old from Broomieknowe Golf Club carded her second even-par round of the week to finish on four-under-par for a final total of 209.

England’s Ellie Gower was two-under-par through 12 but an eight on the penultimate hole put an end to her chase. Darling, who had spoken about maintaining a level-head throughout the week did just that, finishing with a birdie on 18 to secure a six-shot advantage and the Scottish Girls’ Championship.

Speaking to Scottish Golf following the trophy presentation, Darling said:

“I was really steady out there today and went on a bit of a par-run, but I think that was worth it. Ellie was holing quite a few putts and had me worried at some points but I stuck to my game pan and just really happy to come away with the win.”

Darling now turns her attention to next week’s Helen Holm Women’s Open at Troon. With next week’s event counting towards qualification for The PING Junior Solheim Cup, the Scots teenager is hoping she can take advantage of her recent run of form, adding:

“Next week’s event is a women’s event so obviously it will step up another level but I am definitely happy with where my game is at the moment and ready to take on the challenge of next week and hopefully I will come away with another good performance.”
