SCOTLAND LIE IN 12th POSITION AFTER ROUND 2 OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Espirito Santo Trophy women's world amateur championship  - Venue: Carton House Golf Club, Maynooth, Co Kildare, Ireland

The USA set a 36-hole scoring mark, fueled by matching bogey-free scores of 8-under 65 from Jennifer Kupcho and Kristen Gillman on the O’Meara Course, to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Republic of Korea and three strokes over first-round leader Japan.

Scotland, who were placed in 13th spot after day one, finished day two in a share of 12th place on a team total of one-under par.

Aboyne’s Shannon McWilliam carded an impressive three-under 69 with Connie Jaffrey’s level par round of 72 also counting towards the team score.

A decade after winning the men’s equivalent for the first time, Scotland are heading into this week’s Women’s World Amateur Team Championship with a side that looks capable of making an impact at Carton House in Ireland.

Emulating that success recorded by Wallace Booth, Gavin Dear and Callum Macaulay in the Eisenhower Trophy event in Australia may be a tall order, but getting in the Espirito Santo Trophy medal mix will definitely be a target for a trio comprising of Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), Hannah McCook (Grantown-on-Spey)and Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne).

They have already tasted team success in Ireland this year, having been part of the Scotland side that won the Women’s Home Internationals for the first time in eight years at Ballybunion earlier this month. 

McCook, also won the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Co Louth earlier in the year, claiming that individual success a week after she had also triumphed in the Welsh equivalent.

“We are all excited to be back in Ireland after a very successful week here a couple of weeks ago,” said McCook. “The courses are both in brilliant condition and we look forward to playing in such a prestigious event. Preparations have gone well, so we are excited to get started.”

Jaffrey, the 2017 Scottish Women’s champion, added: “We are feeling well prepared and confidence is at a high leading from a great victory at Ladies Home Internationals. This is one of the best teams we have had for a few years, so we have the chance to make this week special.”

The event, which features a record 57 teams, two more than in Mexico in 2016, sees Korea bid to maintain their recent dominance, having landed the title three times in the last four stagings and also being the defending champions.

Ireland, the hosts this time around, were bronze medallists two years ago, when Olivia Mehaffey and Annabel Wilson were in the team and they are being joined on this occasion by Paula Grant, who played in Japan in 2014.

McWilliam is among eight players from this year’s Curtis Cup competing, the others including Sophie Lamb and Annabel Fuller, two of England’s representatives along with Hollie Muse.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for all these players because, for the most part, it will be the strongest field they will have played in and a world championships is the ultimate test in any sport,” said Scottish Golf’s new performance director, Clare Queen. “We look forward to testing ourselves against the best.”

While the majority of the players taking part are up-and-coming youngsters, that is 
certainly not the case with Guatemala. Easily the oldest competitor in the field, 70-year-old Beatriz Arenasis making her 11th appearance in the biennial event as a player or a captain 

The men’s event takes place at the same venue next week, when Scotland will be represented by Ryan Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon), Euan Walker (Barassie) and Sandy Scott (Nairn).

Julie Otto sings praises of St Regulus Ladies Golf Club in St Andrews

When Julie Otto says something has impressed her in golf, ears should be pricking up.

We are talking, after all, about a former English and British international who was secretary/CEO of the LGU then had a spell with the R&A before carving out a career for herself as an award-winning PGA Professional.

In short, she knows the game inside out, so to hear her singing the praises of the work being done by the St Regulus Ladies' Golf Club in St Andrews in trying to grow the game really does merit some attention.

"In my years of being involved in the game, from player to administrator to professional, I have never come across a golf club so engaging with new members of all ages and abilities," said Otto.

"St Regulus is really very innovative in the ways in which it supports the traditions of its club and providing an engaging and friendly approach to new golfers. Always a delicate balance which it manages very well."

Founded in 1913, St Regulus Ladies Golf Club now has more than 300 lady members and 35 junior girls from St Andrews and beyond.

"The ladies' section has a busy schedule with medals and competitions running throughout the year. We also run many fun events – texas scrambles, fun tri-ams and Pinehurst," said

vice captain Rhoda Wilson. 

"The junior section has grown in recent years and they, too, have a wide and varied programme, including a range of fun golfing events. 

"In addition, we also try and encourage family golf. In recent years our mother and daughter golf competitions and our family golf evening have proved very popular. Playing in these fun events allows families to spend quality time together in the fresh air.  

"In order to make golf fun, we regularly organise an away day for the juniors to the nine-hole course at Gleneagles. 

"The ongoing success of our junior section is very important to the club and, as a result, this year we have had a successful taster golf event and in the coming weeks will be holding a 'bring a friend to golf' event."

Like all the clubs in St Andrews, St Regulus is a golf club without a course. Members play over the St Andrews Links and they have a clubhouse just around the corner from the 18th hole on the Old Course.  

Coaching is provided by Otto at Elie Sports Club, where the 2015 Titleist PGA Assistant of the Year is based. The nine-hole Braid Course there also hosts those fun events.

"I have been involved in offering golf coaching to the ladies and providing sessions for the juniors for a few years now," she said.  

"There has been a significant increase in the number of girls engaging with the game in St Andrews but this has been in no small part the result of Rhoda Wilson's extensive work in promoting the game and the club to new young players."

According to Wilson, Otto plays an equal part in the club's success. "As a successful lady golfer, having played in five Curtis Cups, there is no doubt that Julie is a great role model for the girls," she said. 

"Over the years the club has produced several Scottish champions and our current junior section has many worthy winners amongst them."

Sarah Westwood (Elgin) won the Northern Counties LGA girls' championship at Tain Golf Club on Sunday. She had a score of 83 - two better than runner-up Mollie O'Brien (Reay).at Tain Golf Club

Hannah Riddell (Royal Dornoch) won the handicap title with a net score of 76 off a handicap of 13, one ahead of Katrina Tan (Nairn) who has 14 of a handicap.

22 girls who are members of Renfrewshire clubs, took part in the  annual RLCGA competitions at Whitecraigs Golf Club on Sunday 26th August. 

The weather had been appalling in the morning but with an improving forecast and crossed fingers, all went ahead,

The Junior Championship was held alongside the Campbell Clock as it is increasing difficult to get the girls together!

We are indebted to Whitecraigs GC for giving us the courtesy of their courses once again and to their Lady Captain, Rosemary Dobson who assisted on the day and presented some of the prizes. 

All the helpers were very much appreciated and delighted that they were not soaked this year. Our thanks also go to Clair Barclay who donated golf balls for the goodie bags.

JAN MACNAB WINS RANFURLY CASTLE LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP

On Saturday 25th August 2018 Ranfurly Castle Club Championship took place in very pleasant and sometimes sunny conditions. 

The finalists were Denise Cowan and Jan Macnab.  It was a very close fought match with Jan winning on the 17th. Well done to both for reaching the final and congratulations to Jan on her achievement. This was Jan’s first Championship win.

In the gents section Andrew Cunningham retained his title beating Ethan Law.
After the presentation of prizes 60 people enjoyed a Italian themed buffet. 

KARYN DALLAS IS NOW A FRANKLY CERTIFIED PUTTING INSTRUCTOR

Recently qualified Certified Putting Instrucor (CPI) Karyn Dallas is looking forward to applying what she has learned to her lessons, having taken advantage of the special PGA in Scotland initiative. 

As a Scottish Golf Performance Coach, Dallas knows what it takes to succeed at the top level, having been involved for many years, and believes that putting is important for success.
