Official Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Charities Announced
AAMSO Largs charity announcement
Press Release

Gillian's Saltire Appeal and Maggie's have been announced as the official charities of the 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
Past Ryder Cup Captain and Scottish golfing legend Sam Torrance is a Gillian's Saltire Appeal ambassador, and was on hand at one of the charity's facilities in Largs, North Ayrshire, to make the announcement.
The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open will be played at Dundonald Links, just a few miles down the Ayrshire coast, on July 13-16. The partnership with Gillian's Saltire Appeal and Maggie's means that the tournament will benefit two charities that make a real difference in the local area.
The two charities work closely together to provide support to people with cancer and those who care for them.
Gillian's Saltire Appeal is an Ayrshire-based charity, which provides and maintains respite accommodation for cancer sufferers, their families and carers in Ayrshire and other parts of Scotland.
Maggie's provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks.  The charity now runs a network of 20 cancer care centres helping people to live well with cancer, including eight in Scotland.
Over the course of the tournament, both charities will have a presence on site at Dundonald, and will benefit from a wide range of fundraising opportunities.
Peter Adams, Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Tournament Director said: "We're delighted to welcome both Gillian's Saltire Appeal and Maggie's as the tournament's official charities.
"It's very important to us that the tournament leaves a legacy in the local area, and with these two charities on board we can help to deliver really meaningful benefits to the local community."
Gillian's Saltire Appeal Co-founder, Les Ward, said: "The Gillian's Saltire Appeal is delighted to be partnering with Maggie's as official charities of this year's Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Dundonald.
Maggie's Logo"The funds raised during the iconic Scottish event will go a long way to improving and enhancing our properties in Largs and Millport, which we provide free of charge for cancer suffers from Maggie's centres and their families to enjoy some well-deserved holiday respite."
Maggie's Chief Executive, Laura Lee, said: "It is wonderful for Maggie's to have this opportunity to work with Gillian's Saltire Appeal and the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
"The tournament provides a tremendous platform to drive awareness of how both charities help people live well with cancer, while also raising vital funds for Maggie's Glasgow.
"Maggie's relies solely on voluntary donations to run its network of 20 support centres across the UK and beyond, including eight in Scotland, and being part of this year's Scottish Open will undoubtedly make a difference to people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, across the West Coast of Scotland."
The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open takes place at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire on July 13-16 2017. Fans can buy tickets to see some of the world's best golfers competing on the Ayrshire coast - including official Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open hospitality packages - at www.aamscottishopen.com/tickets

The Renfrewshire girls found the course tight and conditions tricky, but with some practice over the coming season, they shall look forward to a return match in the autumn.

Thanks go to June Kerr, Ayrshire Junior Convevor for organising the match and the tea in the Station Cafe afterwards.

Swede leads after 2nd Round of the Helen Holm Trophy

Swede Linn Grant leads from Shannon McWilliam with one round to go at "Helen Holm"

Aboyne teenager Shannon McWilliam held on to second place with a second-round 70 for 139 in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
But the leader has changed from the first day's Alexandra Forsterling (Germany) to a young Swede with Scottish blood in her veins, Linn Grant.
Forsterling slipped from 68 to a 73 and is joint third on 141.
Grant leads McWilliam by two shots at the top of the leaderboard with scores of 71 and 66 for 137.
Linn is descended from a former Scottish club pro based in Sweden.
She had no bogeys in her superb, tournament-low 66 in which she birdied five par-5 holes - by reaching them in two shots and two-putting - and her other birdie came at the par-4 17th in halves of 34-32.
McWilliam, who finished third two years ago when only 15. In fact in the 2015 "Helen Holm," she led the field with only six holes to go but Royal Troon's last few holes were too much for her.
Older, wiser and stronger, Shannon would have finished her second round over Troon Portland on level terms with leader Grant but the Aboyne 17-year-old bogeyed the short 16th and the long 18th after birdidieng the first, ninth, 11th and 12th to be four under par for the round with three to play.
Grantown on Spey's Hannah McCook is a second Scot in the leading 10 with a round to go. Her rounds at Troon Portland have been very steady - 72 and 71 for 143.
Reigning Scottish champion Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), who works at Edinburgh Airport, was among those who failed to make the cut at 10-over-par 145.
Ailsa shot 76-85 for 161.

GOLF COPY AND SCORES

Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam, third in the event at the age of 15 in 2015, is lying second, one shot off the pace, with a three-under-par 69 opening round at Troon Portland in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke play championship at the Ayrshire venue.

She birdied the par-5 first and the fifth, then suffered a double bogey 6 at the seventh before a 2 at the short eighth enabled her to turn in one-under-par 35. Shannon, pictured, had a bogey-free inward half of 34 with another 2 at the short 10th and a 4 at the par-5 11th.
McWilliam was the clubhouse leader when she finished but later
Germany's Alexandra Forsterling took the lead with a 68 after bogeying the 13th, 14th and 18th in halves of 32-36.
Alexandra started with an eagle 3 at the par-5 first and then birdied the fifth, seventh, 11th and 12th, at which point she was six under par with six to play. She did get one more birdie, at the long 15th, but the three late bogeys kept her within striking distance of McWilliam.
Twice winner of the "Helen Holm," Olivia Winning (Rotherham) is well in the mix with a 71 (37-34).
There were disappointing scores by Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) 75, Scottish champion Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) 76, former Scottish title-holder Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) 78, Gemma Batty (Moffat) 79 and Isobel Wardle (Prestbury) 83.

The first of the RLCGA Championship semi-finals was between defending champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle).
Denise was 1 up on the turn but Eildih fought back on the back nine to win 2&1.
Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) and Liz Stewart (Greenburn) contested the other semi-final - this was a very close game with Gillian running out eventual winner on the 17th by 3&1.

A fairly large number of Renfrewshire County ladies turned out to support the two finalists - Eilidh Briggs and Gillian Kyle
This too was a close game with some superb golf being played by both players. However with Eilidh having 5 birdies and Gillian just missing a couple of putts Eilidh finished off the match at the 15th.

Renfrewshire County title holder Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm)  won both her ties today in convincing manner to progress through to the semi final stages of the County Championship at Pollok Golf Club today.

In the morning she won by 8&7 against Elaine Robb (Milngavie) and in the afternoon, and with pretty tough weather conditions, Shirley Back (Gleddoch) had the unenviable task of playing the "in form" Eilidh  and lost 7&6.

In the quarter finals the remaining 3 games were all very close with two of the games going to the 18th: Julie Wilson (Williamwood) lost to Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle); and Alyson McGinnigle (Cowglen) lost to Liz Stewart (Greenburn). Taking 19 holes to determine their outcome the Scottish Vets team mates Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) eventually beat Donna Jackson (Troon Ladies).

RENFREWSHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND TIES

Conditions were not quite as bad as yesterday’s Renfrewshire County qualifier in this mornings match play ties, but still very cold and windy.

Game 1
Eilidh Briggs v Elaine Robb
Eilidh won over Elaine by 8 and 7.

Elaine played steady golf but Eilidh birdied the 3rd, 7th and 9th. With the exception of the 8th Eilidh parred the remaining holes during their match.

Game 2
Shirley Back v Carol McNally
Shirley beat Carol 4 and 3.

Both played some mixed golf and although Carol put up a good fight, Shirley dug-in and eventually manage to win.

Game 3
Julie Wilson v Elizabeth Hale
Julie beat Liz 5 and 4.

The front nine was pretty close with Julie being two up on the turn. Both missed scoring opportunities on the back nine with Liz losing out in the end.

Game 4
Fiona Cameron v Denise Cowan
Denise beat Fiona by 2.

This was Fiona’s first time in the knock-out stages and although a closely contested match Denise ran out winner in the end.

Game 5
Gillian Kyle v Marion Stewart
Gillian beat Marion 6 and 5.

Both played steady on the way out with Gillian being one up after eight. However, Gillian’s length proved too strong for Marion on the back nine.

Game 6
Carol Whyte v Donna Jackson
Donna beat Carol 7and 6.

Carol played steady but Donna’s parr golf for the front nine was enough to win the match.

Game 7
Alyson McGinnigle v Anne Judge
Alyson beat Anne 4 and 3.

Game 8
Sara McCorkell v Liz Stewart
Liz beat Sara 2 and 1.

This was probably the closest game in this round. Sara was 3 up at one point but Liz pulled it back to all square at the 15th and then won the next two holes to win the match.

Captain Liz Keohone wins County Championship

Liz Keohone, (Loudoun Gowf Club) is the new Ayrshire Ladies County Champion, winning the title in her year as Captain.

It was a great final between Liz and Jane Finnie, Troon Ladies, with Liz winning at the 19th hole.

Jane got off to a great start winning the first 2 holes, the next 4 holes were exchanged before Liz won 8 and 9 to square the match. Liz then chipped in at the 10th to go ahead for the first time in the game. Eleven and 12 were halved in pars before Jane took 3 holes in a row to be 2 up with 3 to play. Sixteen was halved, then a par on 17 was enough for Liz to take the match down 18 where a great chip secured a 4 and a win.

Despite good approach shots to the 19th green neither found the putting surface with Jane running into some trouble at the back of the green. A good up and down from Liz was enough for her to win the hole and the title.

The match was watched by a good crowd who were certainly entertained by the quality of the golf from both finalists in tricky conditions. The better ball score for the 18 holes played being 3 over par.

KIRSTY BRODIE AND JILLIAN FARRELL TO THE FORE AT MONTROSE LINKS

Strathmore's Kirsty Brodie and Jillian Farrell (Cardross) kept the home fires burning on the opening day of the Scottish Under-18 girls' open stroke play golf championship at Montrose Links today (Wed)

Kristy shares the lead at the head of an international field of 102 with a one-under-par 72 alongside Germany's Hannah Karg while Jillian is one off the pace in a four-way tie for third place on 73.

Brodie bounced back in great style after bogeys at the eighth, ninth and 11th. She staged a grandstand finish to step into the spotlight with birdies at the 12th, 14th, 15th and17th in an inward half of three-under 34.

Co-leader Karg would have been clear of the field but for double bogey 6s at the second and 10th holes. Five birdies in halves of 36 have her sharing the pole position.

Farrell, winner of a recent Scottish Junior Tour girls' competition, stayed in good form with a bag of six birdies in halves of 36 and 37. Six bogeys cancelled out her gains but she is still in good shape.

Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam, one of the favourites for the title, is still seeking to recapture the form that earned her selection for the GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy team a couple of years ago. She had a lacklustre round of 79 with no birdies and two double bogeys.

The leading North-east player with a 78 is Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead) who had an eagle 3 at the par-5 17th.
