SOUTH WIN THE VETERANS JAMBOREE AT GLENBERVIE

Team Scotland - Photo courtesy of Midland vets

This year Scotland hosted the annual Jamboree at Glenbervie GC near Falkirk for the Miller Stirling Trophy

The Jamboree is a prestigious 3 day event payed between the best "senior" lady golfers from England -- namely  North, Midlands, South and Scotland.

Those who went to watch were treated to seeing some fantastic golf being played on a lovely course but with extremely difficult greens.

Throughout the week the teams played 3 foursomes matches in the morning followed by 6 singles matches in the afternoon - so 9 points available each day. At the end of day 2 the teams from the North and the South were vying for top spot - both teams having won their matches against Scotland and the Midlands.

However, on countback of matches the South were up by half a point overall meaning in the final days match between the two leading teams, the North needed to win the match in order to secure the winners trophy.

Scotland lost to North, South and Midlands over the 3 days - - Unfortunately the Vets Jamboree and the Senior Home Internationals coincided  and Karen Ballantyne (Captain of the SVLGA) said "Very proud of SVLGA members Gillian Kyle, Elaine Moffat, Karen Marshall and Karen Ferguson-Snedden who couldn’t be at our Jamboree but performed so well at the Senior Home Internationals (Mixed).

Very well done to Captain Fiona de Vries.

A tense final day!

After the morning foursomes, the South led by 2 matches to 1, so the North then needed to secure wins in at least 4 of their 6 afternoon matches.

The end result came down to the last putt on the final green where the match was halved and resulted in the whole match being halved 4 1/2 to 4 1/2

The North missed out by the smallest of margins - they received the Tony Moffat Quaich as runners-up and the Miller Stirling Trophy this year went to the South.

MESSAGE FROM THE SVLGA

As you all know, we are in the midst of a coronavirus epidemic and the SVLGA Committee has been trying to find the best way forward for 2020. We have held a virtual committee meeting, and, taking into account recent government advice on the length of time it may take to find our way out of the lockdown, we have decided to cancel all our events for 2020. Playing any kind of competitive golf event appears to be quite a long way off. Our events involve an older age group, travel across Scotland and England, overnight stays, catering, not to speak of methods of playing golf at a social distance. We hope that all Divisions agree with these decisions.

The first event to be cancelled is the Jamboree at Glenbervie. We were looking forward to hosting the English Divisions in Scotland. However, the Divisions have agreed to postpone the event to 2021, and we have booked to play at Glenbervie from Monday 2nd - Thursday 5th August 2021.

We have also decided to cancel the SVLGA Championship. Many Divisions have cancelled their qualifying competitions which are usually played over the year leading up to the finals at Blairgowrie. The Scottish Championship will not be contested this year. In 2021 the SVLGA Championship Finals will be contested on Sunday 19th September and Monday 20th September at Blairgowrie as usual.

We have also cancelled the Blairgowrie event. We were hoping that we might be able to hold a golf event in September as it is still a few months away, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that we would be able to hold the event in the normal format, and the sensible decision is to cancel it. We have booked at Blairgowrie for 2021 on Monday 20th September and Tuesday 21st September. Thank you to everyone who intimated that they would like to play this year. Most Divisions had taken up their quota, and will be allocated the same number of places for 2021.

Our AGM is scheduled for Sunday 20th September 2020 at Blairgowrie at 7.30pm. As the Blairgowrie event is not going ahead, we will find another method of holding the AGM which is likely to be on the same date at the same time. We will let you know details as soon as we can.

THE MARY MCKENNA PERPETUAL TROPHY MATCH IS POSTPONED

Annual SVLGA team v Irish Senior Ladies team for the Mary McKenna Perpetual Trophy:

I suspect that it will come as no surprise that the decision has been made to postpone the above match which was due to take place on 28 and 29 March in Dublin. We are currently in discussions with our Irish friends to decide when the next match will be played.
This is such a disappointment for all concerned but it is clear the current situation will not improve  in the next two weeks and this is the only course of action which could be taken.

In the meantime, we do hope that all our members stay fit and well and manage to get out on the golf course to reap the benefits of playing this great game.

Stay fit and well everyone ⛳️🏌️‍♀️

Report from Karyn Ballantyne (Scottish Vets Captain)

Wednesday, 25 September 2019

Karen Ballantyne is the new Scottish Vets Captain

L to R - Fiona de Vries, Karen Ballantyne, Maureen McKenna, Alison Whyte,
Nancy Duncan, Moira Begbie and Ellie Whyte

The SVLGA AGM was held on Monday 23rd September prior to our prizegiving.

Many thanks to all the members who attended. Captain Ellie Whyte gave her report on a very successful Mary McKenna Trophy Match held at Troon and on the ‘Work in Progress’ Jamboree held at Northhamptonshire GC.

We are indebted to Ellie for her superb organisation of the team over the last two years and her attention to detail, good humour and boundless energy!

President Maureen McKerrow, Vice President Nancy Duncan, Secretary Alison Whyte, Treasurer Moira Begbie will continue in office for the current year.

After serving two years as Vice Captain, Karen Ballantyne was appointed Captain for the next two years and is very much looking forward to working with our squad of players over the winter.

I’m delighted Fiona de Vries has agreed to be our Vice Captain. Her huge wealth of experience playing in many team events and in particular at Vet and Senior level will be invaluable.

Thanks go to he new SVLGA Captain Karen Ballantyne for the report and photograph

Scottish Vets Round up from Blairgowrie including the Beddows Quaich and Tony Moffat Memorial Trophies

Fiona Hunter and Sheena Wood

Championship: We have a worthy 2019 Champion in Sheena Wood (Northern) who was pushed all the way by Fiona Hunter (Galloway)

The match was all square after 4 holes but Fiona built up a steady lead and was 3 up after 10 holes. Sheena fought back and the match was all square after 14. It looked like it would stay that way after 16 but Fiona sank a long putt to take her 1 up. Once again Sheena squared the match, on the 17th.
A tense finish on the 18th saw Sheena pitch onto the green from a tricky lie and once they were on the green, Fiona conceded the match. This was a game of high quality golf with a better ball of 3 over which, given that the course was playing its full length, was very good scoring.  We were all impressed by Fiona’s brilliant short game and I think we should all be out there over the winter with the aim of getting ‘up and down’ from anywhere off the green. It’ll pay dividends.

Some of the main prizewinners on Day 1
Patrick Rosebowl singles over Rosemount: Congratulations to Gillian Kyle on an excellent score of 76 net 73 which was the best scratch and net score of the day. The score was particularly good as Gillian teed off in the first game when it was particularly damp and misty.

President Maureen McKerrow with Linda Mcdonald with the Greensomes trophies --
Lorna Bennett missing

Beddows Quaichs and Tony Moffat Memorial Trophies: Linda Mcdonald and Lorna Bennett  played lovely golf and returned an excellent scratch 76 Nett 70.6.  -- CLICK HERE FOR ALL THE SCORES

We were blessed with three days of very good weather, played over fabulous courses and exceptionally well catered for. Our thanks to everyone for making this such a great tournament.

EUROPE LEAD AFTER DAY 1 OF THE SOLHEIM CUP -- GREAT SUPPORT BY MANY

Scottish Vets are out helping and supporting at the Solheim Cup

Europe 4.5, USA 3.5

FROM THE EUROPEAN LADIES TOUR WEBSITE

Europe will take a narrow one point lead into the second day of the 16th Solheim Cup at the PGA Centenary course at Gleneagles.
The home team are 4 ½ – 3 ½ in front heading into the second series of foursomes and fourballs but it is the American team who have momentum on their side after a dramatic finish to the day in which they came from behind to salvage halves in both of the last two fourball matches.
The home side took a slender 2 ½ – 1 ½ lead into the fourballs but it disappeared when in the second match on the course Ally McDonald and Angel Yin, both left out of the morning foursomes, took just 13 holes to beat Swedish duo Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall 7 & 5.
The Americans good off to a fast start with birdies at the first three holes and they also birdied the fifth, ninth, tenth and 11th to increase that advantage to seven. Nordqvist did get one hole back with a birdie at the 12th before McDonald, a late replacement for the injured Stacy Lewis, closed out the match with a par on the next.
The 7 & 5 score tied the record for the biggest margin of victory in a Solheim Cup fourball, set by one of this year’s US Vice-Captains, Pat Hurst, and her partner Rosie Jones in their match against Lisa Hall and Sophie Gustafson at Muirfield Village in 1998.
“That was the year I was born,” laughed a delighted Yin.
“I would say we’re ham and eggs. We’ve always got each other’s back, no matter what, and we work together as a team, communicate well. We’re just such a good pairing.”
Her partner McDonald added: “When Juli called me in to replace Stacy, I knew it could go either way, so to be able to go into my first match and get a point for the US means a lot.”
The USA won the first fourball series 4-0 two years ago in Iowa but any hopes they had of replicating that feat disappeared when the veteran Swede, Suzann Pettersen, and the rookie Dutchwoman, Anne Van Dam, beat Danielle Kang and Lizette Salas 4 & 2. It was a significant win for Pettersen because it was her ninth Solheim Cup fourball victory, tying the European record, held by Laura Davies.
“I just want to say I had the best partner in the world today,” said the Norwegian. “I told you we don’t have any rookie on the team. I mean, this girl, I think she’s the best golfer I’ve ever seen on the women’s side. Today, she was an absolute rock star.”
Van Dam added: “Walking through that tunnel, especially to play with Suzann who has been my idol growing up, for her to say, ‘Let’s enjoy this,’ that is what I was going to do. I was just hitting it solid from the beginning. It is not an easy golf course. Even from the tee you have to hit it in the fairway. If I hit it in the rough I lose my advantage a little bit from the tee, but it was great. I’m happy I played well and I was happy and comfortable around Suzann today.”
At that stage, the Europeans were one point clear of the Americans and that is how it remained when Lexi Thompson holed a curling 25-foot birdie putt across the last green to secure a halve for her and partner Jessica Korda against Bronte Law and Carlota Ciganda.
Then, in the final match, and with the sun starting to set at the end of a long but riveting day, the Europeans, Charley Hull and Azahara Munoz, also lost the last to a birdie to tie their match with Nelly Korda and Brittany Altomare, having been four up with five to play. This time it was rookie Altomare who did the damage, also holing out from long range to keep her side within one point of their rivals.
“Those two half points at the end of the day were huge,” said US captain, Juli Inkster. “For two rookies (Nelly Korda and Altomare) to be four down with five holes left and come back and tie, you can’t teach that. It’s just in your belly. I’m just so impressed with them. It was a great end to the day.”
European captain, Catriona Matthew, said: “Obviously, we got off to a great start in the foursomes. Our objective was to win every session.
“The finish wasn’t what we were looking for, everyone’s a little disappointed with that, but I think you have to take the positives. We’re leading. We’re a point up. If we’re leading at the end of each day, that would be great.”
