Susan Wood (Drumpellier) coped best with the wind and the rain in the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship qualifying round at Lanark Golf Club today
Susan, shot a 77, matching the CSS, and earned the top seed berth by seven shots from Lesley Loyd (Hayston) and defending champion May Hughes (Lanark).
Susan Wood also won the Centenary Salver with the best net score.
Jean Maddock, with a score of 105, was leading qualifier in the Bronze Division championship.

CONNIE JAFFREY BEATS AUDREY THOMPSON IN AYRSHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) is the new Ayrshire women's county golf champion.
She won the title on her first appearance in the final today (Wed), beating Audrey Thompson (Loudoun) - another first-time finalist - by 3 and 1 in the final at Irvine Bogside Golf Club.

Connie, the No 2 seed, got off to a flying start and soon established a four-hole lead.
Audrey, who had beaten top seed Emma Hale (Troon Ladies) by 2 and 1 in the morning semi-finals, fought back to halve her deficit by the turn but Jaffrey held her at bay to win by 3 and 1.

ANNE LAING REGAINS D AND A TITLE

Former Scottish women's champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) won the Dunbartonshire and Argyll county title at Douglas Park Golf Club today. She beat Laura McGeachy (Windhill) by 3 and 1 in the final to claim the county title for a fourth time, but the first since 2001.

KILMACOLM'S EILIDH BRIGGS DOES WELL IN FRANCE

Eilidh Briggs, a member of Kilmacolm Golf Club, had a great run through to the semi-finals of the French Under-21 girls' match-play tournament for the Esmond Trophy at the weekend at St Cloud GC, Paris.
Eilidh lost by 2 and 1 in the penultimate round to the No 2 seed, Germany's Laura Funfstuck, today.
Eilidh who was one down after 10 holes, was the 14th of the 32 qualifiers for the match-play top flight.
To get to the last four, she beat England's Olivia Winning by two holes, the No 3 seed Nuria Iturrios (Spain) by two holes, and Anyssa Harbaut (France) by 2 and 1 in the quarter-finals.
Funfstuck will play the leading qualifier, Natalia Escuriola (Spain) in Monday's 36-hole final.
Escuriola beat Gabriella Cowley (West Essex), winner of the Scottish Under-16 girls' open title last year, by 4 and 3 in the quarter-finals.
Curtis Cup teenager Bronte Law (Bramhall) will play Jessica Vasilic (Sweden) in the final of the second match-play flight for the Cartier Trophy, also over 36 holes.
Bronte, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, beat the top seed, Spain's Harang Lee, by 2 holes in the morning quarter-finals.

Bunny Grant and May Myers -- D&A County Winter Foursomes Winners

The D&A Winter Foursomes Final was played today at Windyhill Golf Course

 Douglas Park's Elinor [Bunny] Grant and Clober's May Myers beat Kay McColl and Helen Burnet (Hilton Park) by the margin of 4&3.

 With extremely difficult conditions and Baltic weather all four ladies showed great guts and stamina. The Damson Gin revived them all on the edge of the 15^th green!   Bunny must be their oldest winner of this competition – she first won in 1985 !! The salver was presented in 1972 by Miss Norah Wallace.   Together with May, they have now won on six occasions, and they have each won with other partners once.

SCOTLAND TEAM CAPTAINS NAMED FOR 2013 SEASON

Following two seasons in charge of the Home International team, Fiona Norris (Hamilton) has been named Captain of the Scottish side for the European Ladies’ Team Championships at Fulford in York in July.

“It is good to be involved with Scotland again this year,” said the former international player. “I am hoping to visit Fulford very soon. I know it is a wonderful championship course and has held many big tournaments in the past.

“Our team will be certainly ready for the challenge and I am sure it will be an advantage that the Championships are taking place in the British Isles. Scotland has many talented players and we will be aiming to put in a strong performance against the very best in Europe.”

Karen Marshall (Baberton) takes over as Captain for the Home Internationals. The Scottish team will have home advantage at Scotscraig from September 11-13. Scotland last hosted the event at Irvine in 2009 when the side finished runners-up to Wales. Scotland went on to win the title at Whitchurch the following season.

Elaine Cuthill ( Lanark) retains Captaincy of the European Girls’ team, while Laura Walker (Muckhart) is the new skipper of the Girls’ Home International team.

Susan Wood (Drumpellier) takes over as Captain of the Scottish Under-16 teams, while Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) extends her period at the helm for the Senior International matches and she will also Captain Scotland at the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship.

KYLIE WALKER IS THE BEST SCOT AT THE LADIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN CHINA

West of Scotland's Kyle Walker posted a 1 under par round 71 in the 2013 Ladies World Championship at Mission Hills in China followed by a 2 under par round on day 2. In round 3 she had a 3 over par 75 and a 4 over par 76 and finished in 37th place on 292.
Carly Booth and the 2 Amateurs Kelsey MacDonald and Eilidh Briggs did not make the cut

Carly Booth however, who was representing Scotland finished on the same score of 292 as Kylie and SCOTLAND finished in 12th position out of 19

LOW HANDICAP AMATEURS NEEDED TO PLAY IN THE NEW PAUL LAWRIE GOLF CENTRE LADIES OPEN TOUR

The new Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Scottish Ladies Open Tour will be launched at Marriott Dalmahoy's East Course on Thursday, April 18. The 14-event tour, modelled on 18-hole, one-day Alliance lines, will be open to women professionals and female amateurs with a single-figure handicap.
The fledgling tour is also being supported by the RandA.

In the 25th anniversary year of his US Masters triumph at Augusta National, Sandy Lyle MBE spoke of his immense pride after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the glittering 2013 Scottish Golf Awards.

 Before a sell-out crowd of almost 600 guests at the annual showpiece jointly-organised by the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, the two-time Major champion received a richly-deserved standing ovation as he collected the final award of the night. Lyle, who won The Open Championship at Royal St George’s in 1985 before making history by becoming the first Briton to claim the Green Jacket three years later, became one of the world’s leading golfers in the 1980s and is forever regarded as a member of Europe’s ‘Big Five’ during that era.

After amassing 30 professional wins and playing on five Ryder Cup sides, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012 and has now entered Scottish Golf’s equivalent, joining previous inductees Sam Torrance, Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie. “It was a wonderful night at the 2013 Scottish Golf Awards at the Hilton Glasgow,” said Lyle, 55. “What an honour it was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in front of Scotland’s golf fans in Glasgow, so close to my family heritage in Milngavie.

It was also wonderful to have my wife, Jolande, and four children present at the awards dinner. “It really doesn’t seem like 25 years ago that I won at Augusta National, but it’s obviously a memory that will live with me forever. “I’ve been lucky to have enjoyed a great career and it was nice to reflect on it in Glasgow.

Well done to all the award winners and thank you to the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association for organising a fantastic occasion.” During a night to celebrate Scottish golf at all levels after a fantastic 12 months at amateur and professional level, Lyle was reacquainted with the Claret Jug and the Ryder Cup – among six trophies on show for dinner guests during a wonderful evening which raised thousands of pounds for junior golf in Scotland. Lyle also presented Alford’s Laura Murray with the SLGA Ladies Order of Merit award, before accepting his own Lifetime Achievement accolade from another icon of the 1980s, the Scotland football manager Gordon Strachan.

Other famous personalities from across Scottish sport who gathered included Stephen Gallacher, the recent winner of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, who presented the Amateur Golfer of the Year award to Jack McDonald of Kilmarnock (Barassie). Gallacher walked away with the Shot of the Year award after his heroics in Dubai, while Ryder Cup hero Paul Lawrie won the prestigious Player of the Year award. Craig Brown, manager of Lawrie’s beloved Aberdeen, received the award on his behalf, with other sports celebrities in attendance including golfer Alastair Forsyth, Scotland’s curling queen Eve Muirhead and Grand Slam winning rugby hero Tony Stanger.

 Among other awards presented on the night, Scotland’s victorious Men’s Home Internationals team won the fierce fight for Team of the Year, while Bradley Neil accepted the Boys’ Order of Merit title on behalf of his Team GB gold medal-winning team-mate Ewan Scott from St Andrews. The awards also recognised the efforts of those involved at the grass roots level of the game, with the RBS Volunteer of the Year award going to Shirley Murray from Torvean, while Central region club Strathendrick triumphed in the RBS Junior Club of the Year.

 Another St Andrews player, Lauren Whyte, the 2012 Scottish Girls champion, was also the second recipient of The Adam Hunter Award, created following the death in 2011 of the ex-European Tour player and coach. Stephen McAllister, a former close tour colleague of Hunter’s, was appropriately on hand to accept Whyte’s £500 grant towards her coaching and development.

 Meanwhile, proceeds from the Jewson Long Putt Challenge went to Lyle’s nominated charity – The Brain Tumour Charity. On the day of Bandanas for Brain Tumours, Sandy and dinner guests donned bandanas for the second biggest Brain Research Charity in the world focussing on research.

£2,000 raised for the Maggies Centre Gartnavel Hospital

On Friday 22nd February, Gleddoch House Hotel proved to be the perfect venue for a wonderful Jean Armour Night, which was thoroughly enjoyed by an audience of 120 ladies, and in the process £2,000 was raised for Maggies.

Gleddoch Golf Club's June Lockhart one of the main organisers along with Marion Dornon and Jackie Gray was the chairperson for the evening --- ( See video below)

 After a lovely meal, ladies were treated to two superb speeches. Baroness Helen Liddell delivered a Tribute to Jean Armour, and Annabel Goldie MSP proposed a Toast tae the Laddies.

A lovely recitation by Douglas Park's Helen Faulds (Kate o’ Shanter) was followed by excellent music from Cowglen's singer/songwriter Moira Kerr, who was superbly accompanied by violinist Sarah Perricone.

 The £2,000 was raised courtesy of those ladies attending and the generosity of 4 sponsors - Aggreko, Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management, Spirito and Top Mark Claims Management. The 2 prizes for the prize draw were donated by Gleddoch House Hotel and Spirito.

A time of change following the LGU’s AGM

As the LGU celebrates its 120th anniversary as the voice of women’s golf, the AGM in Dublin saw the announcement of a number of changes, both in key officials and in the arrangements for selecting international teams.

Trish Wilson succeeded Gillian Kirkwood as Chairman and will serve three years as the strategic head of the LGU. An experienced administrator, and senior rules official at many top professional and amateur events, Trish brings a wealth of golf knowledge and experience to her new role.

She says “The LGU is renowned for the high standard of the championships and international matches it hosts, and the focus has to be on continuing to develop and improve our events, both on and off the golf course. The GB&I victory in the Curtis Cup at Nairn gave ladies’ golf a huge boost and I would hope the LGU can capitalise on this to promote the game to new participants and supporters.”

In another change of senior personnel, Brigid McCaw has been appointed the 25th President of the LGU since the position was instigated in 1908, and commences her two years in office in succession to Mrs. Jill Edwards MBE.

Chairman of the LGU in 2009, Brigid has served in many roles at national level in Ireland and has been one of the LGU’s top rules officials for a number of years. She is “pleased and honoured to be President of the LGU in this, its 120th anniversary year.”

At the AGM itself, retiring Chairman Gillian Kirkwood took the opportunity to announce a radical shake-up in the LGU’s arrangements for selecting international teams. She said “the face of ladies’ amateur golf has changed with the advent of international playing opportunities, and with elite players getting younger and younger. In addition, with the introduction of the World Amateur Golf Ranking for ladies, detailed information on individual performances is becoming more readily available.

A review of selection options was commissioned, and involved wide consultation with many interested parties. At the recent Board meeting, the Directors unanimously agreed that future Great Britain & Ireland teams will be selected from a mix of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (“WAGR”), the newly implemented LGU Order of Merit and a small number of Captain’s picks.

The biennial Junior Vagliano team will continue to be selected by a panel of representatives from each of the four home countries.”

These new arrangements will be introduced with immediate effect, with the Vagliano team for the match against the Continent of Europe in Chantilly in June 2013 comprising:-

The top 4 players from the WAGR (subject to being in the top 20) as at 17 June 2013
The top 3 players from the LGU Order of Merit (or 7 or any number up to 7, if none within the top 20 of WAGR) as at 17 June 2013
Captain’s picks – 2 players
Reserves – the leading 2 players from the WAGR not already selected above

The new selection arrangements are intended to recognise modern playing schedules, be fit for purpose in choosing the best team available, and provide clarity and fairness for players, parents, National Organisations, coaches and the media.


The Junior Vagliano team, which will be selected by the more traditional method, will be announced on 3 June 2013.

PAMELA HAS A GOOD OPENING ROUND IN AUSTRALIA

New Zealand teenage sensation Lydia Ko has continued her fine form with an incredible 10-under-par 63 in the opening round of the 2013 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open being played this week at Royal Canberra Golf Club.

North Berwick's Catriona Matthew, in her first outing of the year, shot a 69, three ahead West of Scotland LET rookie Pamela Pretswell who came through a qualifying round earlier in the week to earn a place in the star-studded field.
The only other Scot in the field, Carly Booth, matched the par of 73.

PAMELA QUALIFIES FOR THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN

West of Scotland's Pamela Pretswell played in Australian Open Qualifying yesterday (Tuesday) and shot two under par to finish joint second and qualify for the ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open which starts at Royal Canberrra on Thursday.
There were only four spots available - Other Scots in the Women's Australian Open field: Catriona Matthew and Carly Booth.
West of Scotland's Kylie Walker is on the reserve list.

PAMELA PRETSWELL MAKES HER FIRST CUT ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR

West of Scotland's Pamela Pretswell, playing in her second European Tour event, made the cut after rounds of 78 and 67 in New Zealand Ladies Open. She then had a final round of 73.
It was a great start for Pamela who was only playing in her second ever event
Lydia Ko, the 15 year old amateur was the winner.
Unfortunately Kylie Walker and Carly Booth did not make the cut to play in the final round.

CHARLIE GREEN - THREE TIMES SCOTTISH CHAMPION - DIES AT 80

Charlie Green OBE, one of the most successful Scottish amateurs golfers in the second half of the 20th Century, has died at the age of 80. He had been suffering from cancer since last August.
The funeral service is on Monday (11.15am) at Cardoss Parish Church.
Born in Dumbarton on August 2, 1932, Green was Scottish amateur champion in 1970, 1982 and 1983.
He won the silver medal as leading amateur in the 1962 Open championship.
Green played in five Walker Cup matches between 1963 and 1973. He was also captain of the GB and I Walker Cup team in 1983 and 1985.
Long and lean, Charlie did not win the first of his three Scottish titles until he was close on 38 - he beat Hugh Stuart by one hole in the final at Balgownie - and Green did not gain the first of many caps for Scotland until 1961 when he was 29.
An affable character, Charlie once told me he "couldn't hit a barn door as a boy golfer."
Fortunately, he persevered and the rest is history.
He enjoyed an Indian Summer of a golfing career when he graduated to the over-50s ranks.
Charlie won the British senior open amateur title six times - four in a row from 1988 to 1991, and then two more consecutively in 1993 and 94.

SCOTTISH LADIES OPEN TOUR -- AMATEURS CAN ENTER

The new Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Scottish Ladies Open Tour will be launched at Marriott Dalmahoy's East Course on Thursday, April 18. The 14-event tour, modelled on 18-hole, one-day Alliance lines, will be open to women professionals and female amateurs with a single-figure handicap.
The fledgling tour is also being supported by the RandA.
This is a great chance for some of our low West of Scotland handicappers to see how they fair against the Pro's -- Why not show them how good you are !

Burns Night at Douglas Park Golf Club

Over 100 people attended the Burns Supper last night at Douglas Park Golf Club.
Club Captain Ian Letford welcomed all the guests and introduced the top table. Calum Ross piped in the haggis for the 35th year running and Past Captain Colin McEwan gave a magnificent address to the Haggis.
Margaret Stewart from Hilton Park gave an excellent reply for the lassies
Vice Captain David Sharpe gave the vote of thanks at the end of the successful evening

Beth Paterson, a member The Eastwood Golf Club, was appointed Chairman of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association at the Annual General Meeting in Perth on January 19. Paterson, who has already served the SLGA as both Chairman of Training and Performance Director, takes over from Shona Malcolm who has been in the post for the last four years. Paterson who was born and brought up on the Isle of Arran has had a lifelong involvement with the game. She is also a member of The Ladies’ Golf Club Troon and Whiting Bay Golf Club.

“I am honoured to be elected as SLGA Chairman. I am looking forward to working with my fellow Board members, staff, our colleagues at the Scottish Golf Union and our partners to carry on the good work that has been done by my predecessors.” said Paterson.

Margaret MacNaughtan, Aberdeen Ladies, was re-elected as President. One new appointment was Audrey Sturgess, a Past Captain of Haggs Castle Golf Club, who replaces Fiona Cowan as the West Director. Eileen Scott has taken over the role of Championship Director. Dawn Butchart, Strathmore Golf Club, was re-elected as the SLGA’s Director of Development. She has been involved in the setting up of Development Centres around the country. So far, 64 girls from eight counties are involved in this exciting project.

SLGA AGM - BETH PATERSON IS THE NEW CHAIRMAN

The SLGA AGM took place yesterday Saturday 19th 2013, at the Dewars Centre in Perth. Captain Maureen Woodhead and and many Renfrewshire County members attended the meeting.

 The meeting started on a sombre note when President, Margaret McNaughton, asked for a moment's silence to remember three stalwarts of the Scottish women's game who died within the last year. They were Ethel Jack, Phyllis Wylie and Elizabeth Pook (Chadwick)


SLGA's Chairman Shona Malcolm then gave an informative annual report which was followed by the Finance Director Pamela Walton detailed accounts annual review.
The annual report of the Scottish representatives on the Executive Council of the LGU was then given by Lorna Bennett.


Margaret McNaughton was re - elected as President and West of Scotland's  Jean Cameron, Wendy Cameron, Nancy Chisholm, Rosemary Dykes and Belle Robertson were all re elected as  Vice Presidents. -- (There are 12)

Audrey Sturgess from Haggs Castle was elected as the West Division representative to replace Fiona Cowan whose term of office has expired.

 Kevin Craggs was reappointed as the Scottish Representative on the Training Panel of the LGU and Dr Lynne Terry and June McEwan were reappointed as the Scottish Representatives on CONGU.

One new Scottish Selectors was appointed - Alex Glennie (West) from Kilmarnock Barassie to replace Anne Laing whose term of office has expired.
 Noreen Fenton (East Division), Addi Shamash (South) remain as Selectors for their second year and Cara Gruber (North Division) for her third year.
Fiona de Vries was reappointed as the Scottish Repesentative on the International Selection Committee of the LGU Past Renfrewshire County

Beth Paterson -- Past Renfrewshire County Captain, SLGA board Member as Performance Director for 4 years and Eastwood Golf Club Member   was then elected to be Chairman to replace Shona Malcolm whose term of office has expired.

 The meeting finished within an hour with a very able Vote of Thanks from Mary Summers, Captain of Angus County

Kilmacolm' s Eilidh Briggs -- Week 2 of the Orange Blossom Trail

Kelsey MacDonald finished with a disappointing last round to still be in the top ten of the South Atlantic Amateur women's championship at Oceanside Country Club, Ormond Beach in Florida yesterday.

Eilidh Briggs was Stirling University's second-highest finisher with a 75 for 301 and a share of 23rd place. The Kilmacolm player birdied the first two holes and then dropped six shots between the sixth and the 13th before ending her round with a birdie.

Eilidh now flies back to Scotland to start a placement as a PE teacher.

KELSEY FINISHES 3RD AND EILIDH BRIGGS FINISHES IN TOP TWENTY IN FLORIDA

Kelsey MacDonald shot a closing three-under-par 69 to finish a highly creditable third in the Harder Hall Invitational, the 72-hole opening event of the Orange Blossom Tour, at Sebring, Florida. 
The Stirling student and Nairn Dunbar GC member posted a three-under aggregate of 285 after earlier rounds of 73, 72 and 71.

Erica Popson, a University of Tennessee student who played for the United States in the Curtis Cup match at Kelsey's home town of Nairn last June, won the prestigious title with a six-under total of 282. She hit the front over an an excellent final round of 68, bettering her earlier efforts of 71, 70 and 73. Mika Liu, a 13-year-old from Bradenton, Florida, finished runner-up, one shot behind Popson and two shots ahead of MacDonald. Liu scored 66, 75, 71 and 71 for 283.

Eilidh Briggs from Kilmacolm provided Stirling University with two players in the final top 20. Eilidh, a former Scottish U18 girls champion, finished joint 19th on 300 with scores of 74, 74, 76 and 76.
