Scottish Girls Championship Eilidh Briggs is 2nd Qualifier

Rachael Watton, 17-year-old Mortonhall member, earned the top seed status in the match-play stages of the Scottish Girls (close) Amateur Championship with a five-over-par total of 153 in the 36-hole qualifying test at Lanark Golf Club today.
Rachael had rounds of 77 and 76 with playing the last eight holes in two under par to finish three shots clear of Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs (Kilmalcolm),
Eilidh had a roller-coaster first round of 77 which included an eagle 3 at the long 11th and a birdie at the long 14th as well as a double bogey sixth at the fifth. She had nothing better than par in her second round.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who led the 1st round with a one over par 75 did not do so well in the 2nd round but ended up being the 6th best qualifier for the matchplay stages tomorrow.

Elderslie's Alyson McKechin set the clubhouse target of one-over-par 75 in the first qualifying round of the Scottish Under-18 girls (close) amateur championship at Lanark Golf Club today.
Alyson had birdies at the first, long 11th, 13th and 17th which almost offset a double bogey at the sixth and other shots dropped at the long fourth, ninth and short 18th in halves of 41 (three over par) and 34 (two under par).
Lying second among the early first-round returns is Jill Meldrum (Dullatur) with a 76. Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) come next with 77s.
The leading 32 players on the gross scoreboard at the end of 36 holes will go forward to the match-play stages.

RACE FOR 2009 JUNIOR MASTERS TITLE STARTS THIS WEEK

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The race for the 2009 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters title, Scotland’s biggest participation junior golf event, gets underway with the first two of this summer’s four regional finals taking place this week.
Sixty four juniors will go west to Glasgow’s Bishopbriggs Golf Club which will tee off this year’s title race, the event then heads north to Boat of Garten with 69 young aspiring golfers hoping to be among those to secure a place in the prestigious grand final, which takes place on the Queen’s Course, Gleneagles, in October.
Qualifying competitions have been taking place up and down the country over the last three months, with the leading two boys and girls from each club making their way through to the regional finals. Following this week’s events, the Junior Masters regional finals moves to Alyth in Perthshire next week (21 July) and the following month to Lothianburn Golf Club, who will host the last qualifier on Wednesday 5 August.
Around 300 youngsters from clubs across the country will be participating in the four events, with the leading 80 players heading for Gleneagles, home of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Among the juniors taking part this year, over 50 competitors are girls, boosted by clubgolf’s ‘Girls in Golf’ programme.
SGU Marketing & Sponsorship Manager Ross Duncan said, “The Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters has been a huge success and we are very grateful to the sponsor’s contribution over the last three years.
“Their support of this event has boosted the grass roots game by promoting and supporting junior golf in communities across Scotland, as well as giving young players the chance to play in a national event at Gleneagles, the Ryder Cup venue for 2014. The calibre of the field at each event has improved year on year and demonstrates much of the hard work going into junior golf and our SGU Academys right now.”
The winner of last year’s Junior Masters girls section was Kirkintilloch’s Jorden Ferrie, whilst Renfrewshire’s Rory McKinnon from Ranfurly Castle won the boys section. Ferrie will be among the field teeing up tomorrow, however McKinnon is unable to take part and is replaced by Scott McAllister, son of two times European Tour winner Stephen McAllister.
This year’s players will need to be on the top of their game to top the Gleneagles leaderboard and take the respective titles at this year’s Grand Final which takes place on 11 October.

Come Back to Ayrshire - The Home of Open Golf Comebacktoayrshire Newsletter 12 July 2009 It's a great year for golfers and anyone with an interest in golf to come back to Ayrshire. Almost 150 years ago a group of individuals took to the sandhills of Prestwick and made Ayrshire the home of Open Golf. Today, Ayrshire boasts two out of five of The Open venues. This year, the newly refurbished Turnberry resort will play host the The Open, a world class event. Those visiting The Open this year will have opportunities to find out more about the area including its range of links, public and parkland courses. A special 'Come Back to Ayrshire' stand will provide information on golf, tourism and the range of events taking place in Scotland's Year of Homecoming and beyond. There will also be opportunities to discover your Scottish roots as specialists from Ayrshire Archives will be on hand to give you an insight into how to trace your family tree and discover more about geneaology. Golf is of course one of the Homecoming pillars and the last practice day of The Open (Wed 15 July) is a special Homecoming Day. Scotland's Year of Homecoming celebrates 250 years since the birth of Robert Burns. Burns was born in Burns Cottage, Alloway, Ayrshire, making this a "must visit" destination for all visitors in 2009. The Come Back to Ayrshire team will have lots of information on the Burns attractions in the area as well as annual Ayrshire events including, the Scottish Gold Cup Festival, Ayr Flower Show, The Burns an' a' that Festival and Alloway 1759. The Homecoming Day will also be a great family day out with opportunities to 'Beat the Pro' at putting, have your photograph taken with The Claret Jug and see some special on screen welcomes from the world of sport. Another special Homecoming golf related event will take place during the week of The Open and throughout the summer until 31 August 2009. Whole in One is a special golf exhibition that charts the history of Open Golf. This free exhibition takes place at Maclaurin Galleries, Rozelle Estate, Ayr and has something for all of the family to enjoy including golf artefacts and memorabilia, an interactive golf simulator and some nostalgic video clips. On a recent visit to Ayrshire golfing legend Jack Nicklaus said of the exhibition: ''The Whole in One exhibition is all about memories and rekindling the spirit of the past. I would encourage everyone with an interest in sport, their local history or those who are plain curious to have a look at the development of golf in South Ayrshire and to see some of the exhibits on show." Jack Nicklaus The Open provides a driving force for golf development in Ayrshire. South Ayrshire Council Leader Hugh Hunter said: "Golf is a major asset to Ayrshire tourism. Often referred to as Scotland's Golf Coast, Ayrshire is a popular destination for golfers the world over. As well as major golfing events such as The Open, annual golf events are also organised by South Ayrshire Council bringing together locals and visitors to enjoy a sense of competition and camaraderie over a number of our courses in Ayr, Troon and Girvan and teams from Golf South Ayrshire and Junior Golf South Ayrshire (Club golf delivered by South Ayrshire Council within local primary schools) work together to develop the sport's social and recreational benefits amongst the young and young at heart!" Scotland finish top of Flight B and Pamela and Kylie are winners

Scotland beat Wales 5-0 to earn ninth place ranking, Silver medals for England

Scotland defeated Switzerland 4 1/2 to 1/2 in the European Team Championships and then went on to beat Wales 5-0 in their final Flight B match to be officially ranked ninth of the 18 competing countries in the European women's amateur team golf championship at Bled, Slovenia.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) won the foursomes by 4 and 3 over Amy Boulden and Gemma Bradbury.
In the singles, the Scotland dominance continued. Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) beat left-handed Stephanie Evans by 3 and 2. Carly Booth (Comrie) was a one-hole winner over Rhian Wyn Thomas. Stirling student Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) beat Tara Davies 4 and 3 while Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) also won by 4 and 3 over Lucy Gould.
Considering they were a little unlucky to lose out on eighth place in the Championship Flight, it was not a bad performance at all by the Scots. Ninth was the highest finish they could achieve after that - and they did it with a little bit of style.
The official rankings at the conclusion of the championship were:

Scottish Under 14's at Largs Golf Club

In the Loretto School Scottish U14s Girls Championship, the title went to Belgium’s Jennifer Remy today after she posted a six-over par 79 to edge out Selby’s Ellie Goodall on the better inward half.

Pamela and Kylie play well for Scotland but Scots miss out for the Top Flight by one

Scotland missed out by one in the Championship Flight of the European women's amateur team championship at Bled, Slovenia.
The Scots finished ninth in the 36-hole qualifying stroke-play which put them into the Second Flight - along with Wales and Ireland.
France are the top seeds with a three-over-par team total over two rounds, which represents some quality scoring in there.
England qualified in fourth place at 14 over par.
The Scots (29 over par) therefore join Wales (44 over par) and Ireland (46 over par) in the Second Flight Matches.
Top scorer for the Scots over the qualifying rounds was Swiss women's open amateur champion Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) with 77 and 71 for 148.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) and Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) all totalled 152, Louise with a pair of 76s, Kyle with scores of 78 and 75 while Sally followed up a 79 with a 73.
Stirling University student Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) improved by five shots with a 75 for 155 but Carly Booth (Comrie) is still not at her best with scores of 79 and 77 for 156.

Susan Wood wins Morison Cup again - by 14 shots at Colville Park

The winner, for the second year in a row, of the 36-hole Morison Cup, played over Colville Park today, was Susan Wood (Drumpellier) with a total of 152, made up of rounds of 78 and 74.
The runner-up was Ruth Rankin (Lanark) with scores of 86 and 80 for 166.
The SSS is 71 and the CSS for the day was 71 and 72.
Susan Wood also won the handicap prize with a net score of 146 (75 and 71).
The winner of the one-round Blackjack Cup was Sandy Williamson (Lanark) with a net 73.
In the junior championship, also played today over Colville Park, Alexandra Duffy (handicap 29) of Cathkin Braes won the championship salver with a net score of 65 while Nicole Benson (Cawder) won the scratch cup with a gross score of 84.

The overall winner of the Renfrewshire County July medal over East Renfrewshire to-day was Lindsay Mathie (Windyhill) with a net 67 (13) - a better inward from half from Jean Irvine (Ranfurly Castle) 67 (21). The best scratch was won by Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) with an excellent 72.

The Provosts of North and South Ayrshire held a Civic Reception to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ayrshire County Ladies on the evening of Friday 3rd July in the County Hall in Wellington Square. Captain Nora McCrossin - sporting mysterious dark glasses to hide the bruises from a [losing] encounter with a runaway caddy car - bravely wecolmed eighty Ayrshire members and invited guests to drinks followed by a superb meal and an evening of entertaining and informative speeches - including those from familiar faces from the SLGA, Chairman Shona Malcolm and Chief Selector Isobel Crawford.
Richard Cole-Hamilton, Past Captain of the R&A, outlined his love of Ayrshire and Ayrshire golf and encouraged the up and coming junior Ayrshire team [who have won the Kennedy Salver for the past 3 years] to emulate the achievements of former Ayrshire teams which still held pole position in Jamboree/County finals wins, but had struggled in more recent times. David Purdie, Professor of Obstetrics, with what might be described as an inside knowledge of women, kept everyone entertained with a speech filled with highly amusing anecdotes.

Ayrshire’s newest MBE, Nancy Chisolm was another, most welcome, special guest at the top table. The whole evening reflected the best of golf; we can compete ‘to the death’ on the fairways, but the friendships we make throughout the years, the bond between young and old, and the fellowship of the game we both love and hate at times, endures for ever.

The Janice Moodie Trophy is Abandoned due to thunder and lightening

The Janice Moodie Trophy had to be abandoned today at Windyhill Golf Club due to the thunder and lightening. Play was suspended for an hour but there was no sign of any improvement and the competition was abandoned. We are trying to find another date for this - once we have sorted this out we will be informed of he new date.

Heather Anderson is the Scottish Strokeplay Champion

Alyth's Heather Anderson, a former Downfield player, won the Scottish senior women's close amateur match-play golf championship over the Montgomery course, Kinross today (Friday).
16th Qualifier from the Strokeplay rounds Heather continued her good form by beating West of Scotland's Alex Glennie in this mornings 1st Semi Final and then beat former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) by 5 and 3 in the final with approximately two over par figures.
Moira (pictured below) led only once in the match, with a par at the first hole, but Heather then won four of the next five holes to be two up after six. Heather took a grip on the outcome when she won four holes in a row from the ninth to improve from two up to five holes ahead.

The Afternoon ties at Kinross

Helen Faulds (Douglas Park), Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Suzanne Cadden (Cardross) all reached the quarter finals of the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship this morning at Kinross in extremely hot and humid conditions.
Heather Anderson the former Downfield and now Alyth player squeezed into the match-play stages as the last of the 16 qualifiers but you would never have known from the quality of performances she produced today.
In the first round she toppled the No 1 seed Fiona Hunter (Baberton) with ease, beating her by 7 and 5.
And to show that was no fluke Heather then beat the eighth best qualifier, former Curtis Cup player and one time World Junior champion Suzanne Cadden from Cardross by 3 and 2.
Heather now plays the fourth seed Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) for a place in the final. Alex beat former champion Pamela Williamson (Bab erton) by 5 and 3 and then had a 2 and 1 win over Helen Faulds (Douglas Park).
The second semi-final sees Noreen Fenton (Dunbar), the No 3 seed, tackle the 10th qualifier, Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies), the 1968 Scottish girls champion and, more recently, winner of the Scottish Veteran women’s title at Blairgowrie.
Noreen, was given a run for her money by 14th seed Frances Neish (Moray) before edgining through on the 18th green in the morning and followed that up with another visit to the last green, winning by two holes against Mary Smith (Tain), the Scottish seniors stroke-play champion last year.
Moira Thomson had a good 2 and 1 win over a that capable Royal Montrose player Kathleen Sutherland before beating the defending match-play champion, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) at the 20th hole in the last quarter-final to finish.

Baberton’s Fiona Hunter (pictured above) has earned the top seed status in the Scottish senior women’s close amateur championship over the Montgomery course at Kinross.
Fiona had rounds of 73 and 80 for a total of 153.
Second best qualifier for the match-play stages is Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) who won the title at Deeside last year.
West of Scotland's Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie), Anna Telfer (Milngavie), Suzanne Cadden (Cardross) and Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) have all qualified for the matchplay stages
Alex Glennie was 4th in the Scratch Section , Anna Telfer was the winner of the Handicap prize over the 2 day event and Suzanne Cadden was 3rd in the Handicap Section
