Scotland made a good start to their defence of the Miller Stirling Trophy in the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Bath Golf Club today (Tuesday).
On a very wet day, they splashed their way to a 7 ½-1 ½ win over England North, whose line-up included former Scottish women’s champion Fiona Anderson from Blairgowrie but now living and working in the Manchester area.

Scotland Girls are inspired by Catriona Matthew

“The Catriona Matthew inspiration is working already,” said a cock-a-hoop captain Margaret MacNaughtan after Scotland toppled European champions Ireland on the opening day of the Under-18 gitrls’ home international matches at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today
Very much the underdogs against an Irish team that won the Euro girls team title only four weeks ago and includes two Vagliano Trophy team players in the 14-year-old Maguire twins, Scotland rallied from 3-1 down to win 5-4.
That sets the scene for a Day 2 summit meeting – Scotland versus defending champions England.
The English walloped Wales 8-1 in their opening tie.
“I’ve never seen a Scotland girls team so animated since they went to Royal Lytham to see Catriona winning the Women’s British Open and meeting her afterwards. And I’m quite certain that some of Catriona’s magic rubbed off on our girls,” said Mrs MacNaughtan, who played for Scotland … at hockey.
“To beat Ireland was a simply fantastic performance. I don’t want to single any players out for special mention because I’ve been stressing since we got here that this is a team championship – and everybody has a role to play in the team effort.
“And that was some team effort against Ireland.”
The Scots, 2-1 down from the morning foursomes, saw that deficit stretchto two points when Lisa Maguire produced some brilliant golf to beat Alyson McKechin (Eldereslie) 7 and 6. Lisa was six up at the turn and birdied the first, fourth, sixth and 10th She was roughly four under par for the holes played.
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) started the afternoon ball rolling for Scotland when she put a second team point on the board by beating Sara Helly 4 and 3Helly was one up at the turn but the initiative in what had been a tight match was seized by Briggs who won three holes in a row, the 13th, 14th and 15th , for victory
Rachael Watton put Scotland on level terms at 3-3 overall with a tremendous 2 and 1 win over Leona Maguire. The tone for a quality match was set when the first hole was halved in birdie 4s. Watton took the lead at the second and was never in arrears after that.
Maguire won the third but the Scot then won the fourth, fifth and eighth to take a three-hole lead. Briggs lost the 10th but went back to three up with a birdie 3 at the 12th. In a ding-dong finish Maguire birdied the 15th and 16th to cut her deficit to one but Briggs won the 17th and the match with a par.
Scotland moved into a 4-3 lead when their new champion, Ailsa Bain (Peebles) beat her Irish counterpart Emma O’Driscoll by one hole after being two down at the turn. Bain won the 10th, the 11th with a birdie and then the 12th to lead for the first time.
O’Driscoll squared the contest again at the 14th but Bain’s par 3 at the 17th put her back in the lead and the last hole was halved.
Ireland drew level at 4-4 when Carla Reynolds, who had been three up after three holes, bt Lesley Atkins (Minto) by 3 and 2 after the Scot had cut her deficit to one hole with a birdie at the 11th. Reynolds won the 12th, 13th and 14th to go four up. Atkins won the 15th but a half at the 16th ended the match in Ireland’s favour.
And so everything hinged on the last of the six singles – Sammy Lesie for Scotland and Patrice Delaney for Ireland.
After losing the first hole, Leslie, from Westhill, Aberdeen, won the next four in a row for a three-hole advantage which was cut to one when Delaney won the seventh and eighth.
A birdie by the Scot at the ninth put her two up again and a par at the 13th was good enough to re-establish Leslie’s three-hole lead and a half in bogey 6s at the 15th meant that neither Sammy nor Scotland could be beaten.

Super mum Catriona Matthew secured a three shot victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club today
She became not only the first ever Scot to win a women’s major championship, but the fourth ever Brit to do so following Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas and Karen Stupples.

Catriona Matthew remains on course at Royal Lytham
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew edged closer to her first major championship victory with a round of 71 on Saturday, taking a three shot lead into the final round of the RICOH Women’s British Open
The 39-year-old from North Berwick finished at four-under-par, three clear of Christina Kim from the United States, at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England.

Catriona Matthew has a Hole in One and leads the British Open
A breathtaking back nine of seven-under 30 took Scotland’s Catriona Matthew into a tie at the top of the leader board on day two at the RICOH Women’s British Open.
She had a Hole in One at the 12th today and is currently 3 Under Par for the 2 rounds and sharing the lead so far

GB&I win final set of singles but Continent of Europe win the Vagliano Trophy

The GB&I Team -- Courtesy of Gillian Kirkwood - Click to enlargeSkipper Mary McKenna's Great Britain & Ireland team finished with their tails up by winning the final singles 5-3 - the only one of the four sessions of play over the two days that they did not lose - but the Continent of Europe retained the Vagliano Trophy women's biennial amateur international trophy by a 13-11 margin at Hamburger Golf Club, Falkenstein in Germany.
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle)and Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) halved their foursomes tie this morning and Pamela had a comfortable win in the singles this afternoon.

West Kilbride Golf Club's girls' section has grown from two at the time our support group took over in 2004 to 36 after this year's intake.
In recognition of this the club have given permission for a new girls' open tournament to be held on Thursday, August 6 2009.
Nancy Chisholm, past president of Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, has agreed to present us with a trophy in her name for the scratch award.
June Kerr, Ayrshire county girls convenor, will put up a trophy for the pre-handicap section and local bakery business Kandy Bar will provide sponsorship and a handicap trophy.
"We are arranging a variety of attractions on the day and aim to make our event a fixture in girl golfers' diaries for years to come," said Keith who is also heavily involved in the Scottish Seniors Golfing Society.

Stewart Cink beats tiring Tom Watson in four-hole play-off for Open title

American Ryder Cup player Stewart Cink is the new Open champion, snatching the title from the hands of compatriot Tom Watson in a four-hole play off after they tied on a two-under-par total of 278 at Turnberry this evening.
Watson, who had turned the clock back all week, ran out of time in his bid to win his sixth Open over the same course where he won his second in 1977. The dream ended in anti-climatic fashion as the 59-year-old five-time champion wearied over the extra holes and destroyed his chances when he took two shots to force himself clear of the thick rough to the left of the 17th fairway. As they walked off that green he trailed 36-year-old Cink by four shots.
The final hole was a formality. Watson blocked his tee shot into the crowd and was in rough short of the green in two. Cink hit two perfect shots to less then three feet and tapped in the winning putt. Watson, sadly, trailed by six shots.
Unfortunately for the talented Cink, who has earned his place in the higher echelons of the game, he was cast in the role of villain.
Playing in his 50th major championship, Cink created his shot at the title with a closing round of 69, making up three shots on Watson over the final 18 holes. He has won five tournaments on the US PGA Tour over the past 12 years and has played in 11 Opens with a previous best of tied for sixth at Carnoustie in 2007.
He took up the game when his parents, both single handicap players, left him at the driving range before he was old enough to go on the course.
“I grew up watching Tom Watson on television and hoped I could one day follow in his footsteps,” said Cink. “I never expected to be playing against him. It has been a surreal experience on one of my favourite courses in this wonderful championship.”
Ross Fisher started his last round birdie-birdie to take the lead but ran up a catastrophic quadruple bogey 8 a few holes later and his chance had gone.
Lee Westwood was in the leading pair on and off after that but dropped crucial shots over the last few holes and he too finished with an anti-climax of three putts on the 18th to fall out of joint second place.
Chris Wood, the Englishman who won the silver medal as leading amateur at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago, did amazingly well as a rookie pro to tie for third place with Westwood on 279.
