Troon's Connie Jaffrey makes the cut at the British Girls
FIVE SCOTS GIRLS SURVIVE IN THE BRITISH
Thanks go to COLIN FARQUHARSON for the report
Five Scots out of 10 starters have made it through among the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the British girls open amateur golf championship at the links of Tenby Golf Club in South Wales.
Germany-based Rebecca McGeehan was the surprise top Scot, thanks to a splendid secoSnd-round of 71, one under par, for an aggregate of 147, which saw her claim No 4 seed status behind the No 1 qualifier, Perrine Delacour from Paris (72-71 for 143).
Seventeen-year-old Rebecca birdied the long first, the long with and the 11th and then, after bogeying the 12th, held her round together on a beautiful sunny and warm afternoon with six solid pars to finish.
Jess Meek, 18, from Carnoustie had an eagle 3 at the 14th on her way to a 73 for 152 and a creditable 10th place among the qualifiers.
Clara Young (North Berwick), still only 15, made it through with ease on 154 despite a second-round 79 in which she was seven over par after only six holes.
Scotland's other qualifiers were national Under-18s champion Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) on 158 (81-77) and Connie Jaffrey (Troon) on 159 (85-74).
The cut to 64 qualifiers fell at 160 so Connie made it with a stroke to spare.

SCOTLAND GIRLS LOSE TO IRELAND AND WIN THE WOODEN SPOON
Scottish Girls Team - Courtesy of Colin Farquharson |
England won the title and the Stroyan Cup for the fifth year in a row but it was much closer than usual. They beat Wales 5-4 after Wales, who had taken the foursomes 2-1, led 4-2 and needed one more victory in the singles to be champions for the first time since 1999.
But England won all of the last three ties for victory.
Ireland were runners-up and Wales placed third.
Scotland trailed 2-1 to Ireland after the foursomes - as they had done against Wales and England earlier in the week. They played well in the singles to share them 3-3.
If the Girls Internationals were decided on singles only then Scotland would be title contenders.
The Scots' singles winners against the Irish were Clara Young (North Berwick), Jess Meek (Carnoustie) and Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co).

SCOTLAND GIRLS LOSE AGAINST ENGLAND ON DAY 2
Only Scotland don't have a chance of winning the Stroyan Cup on the last day of the Girls' Home Internationals at Radyr GC near Cardiff.
They lost 5 1/2-3 1/2 to England, the defending champions, while Ireland and Wales played out an exciting 4 1/2-4 1/2 draw.
England have 1 1/2pt, Wales and Ireland 1pt apiece and the Scots only half-a-point.
On the last day it's Scotland v Ireland and England v Wales.
The damage was done for the Scots when they lost all three morning foursomes to England.
Give the Scots credit for fighting back and actually "winning" the singles but not by a big enough margin to wipe out the 3-0 lunchtime deficit.
Scotland's singles winners were Ailsa Summers and Jess Meek - both Carnoustie Ladies members - and Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co).

Scotland's Girls draw against Wales
Scotland drew with Wales 4 1/2-4 1/2 in their opening match of the Girls' Home Internationals on a rain-hit day at Radyr Golf Club, near Cardiff today.
It was a seesaw struggle which saw the Scots trail 2-1 after the morning foursomes, then take a 4-2 lead after singles wins by Scottish U18 champion Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) and Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co)
But, on afternoon during which there was a 35min suspension of play while some greens which were beginning to flood with the nonstop drizzle were squeegeed, the Welsh fought back and gained two wins and a halved match in the last three ties to finish.
Looking on the bright side, it would have been a defeat for the Scots but for debutante Eilidh Watson (Muckhart), three down with three to play against Ella Griffiths, winning the 16th, 17th and 18th, to earn the half point and the overall draw, which keeps Scotland's hopes alive.
Defending champions England led Ireland 2-1 in the foursomes but were also held to a 4 1/2-4 1/2 draw. Shock individual result in the singles here was a 4 and 3 defeat for Gabriella Cowley, the Scottish Under-16 champion and third in a huge international field at the recent RandA Junior Open.
Her conqueror was Olivia Mehaffey, one of the three singles winners for Ireland - Jessica Ross and Ariana Coyle Diez were the others, that enabled them to take England right down to the wire.
But for Meghan McLaren's victory in the final singles, Ireland, who have never won the Stroyan Cup which goes to the champions at the end of the three-day programme, England would have suffered their first defeat since Scotland won the title in 2006 and 2007.
Day 1

ALYSON McKECHIN WINS MACKIE BOWL AT GULLANE
Alyson McKechin - The 2012 Mackie Rosebowl Winner -- Courtesy of Gillian Kirkwood |
She headed a field of 39 players for the Mackie Bowl 36-hole SLGA Order of Merit tournament by one stroke with rounds of 72 and 75 for 147.
Runners-up, a shot behind were Rachel Walker (Dumfries and County) and Jane Turner (Craigielaw).
Rachel gained second prize with a second-round 71, the best of the day, to Jane's 73.
Fourth place went to Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw) with 150 (75, 75), thanks to an eagle 2 at the par-4 17th hole, holing her second shot with a 52 degree wedge.
It was a typical East Lothian day of wind and sun and threatening clouds scudding by, but never shedding their contents over the course.
The rough was punishing.

SCOTTISH UNDER-21 GIRLS OPEN AMATEUR STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Tournament leaders Gabrielle Macdonald, Gemma Dryburgh and Nicola Callander on the first tee at the Blairgowrie Lansdowne course for the final round of the Scottish Under-21 girls championship today. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
Nicola Callander, 16-year-old Anglo-Scot from Hertfordshire, won the Scottish Under-21 girls' open amateur stroke-play championship in a dramatic finish at sunny Blairgowrie today.
Nicola, the overnight leader started the final round with a one-stroke advantage over Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw) with Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield) four shots off the pace in third place.
But by the time they got to the 18th tee, Nicola had lost the lead after driving into trees at the 17th and running up a double bogey 7.
Dryburgh's par 5 at the penultimate hole put her into the lead by one stroke with Macdonald another shot farther back.
Then came the last-hole drama.
Dryburgh, 19-year-old Tulane University, New Orleans student, hooked her drive into the trees, hacked out on to the fairway but then was horrified to see her long third shot to the green drift out of bounds over the road on the right.
The hole cost her a triple bogey 7 for a 75 and a final total of three-over-par 222.
Callander got a flyer with a five-iron second just off the back of the green. She took three to get down from there but a 5 for 78 - her worst of the three rounds - and a two-over total 221 gave her the title by a shot.
A member of Mill Green Golf Club, near Welwyn, Nicola is the youngest Scottish Under-21 girls champion since Carly Booth, who was 15 at the time, in 2007.
Macdonald, 19-year-old Edinburgh-based St Andrews student, parred the last four holes for a 78 and a share of second place on 222.
Gabrielle was a possible winner until she dropped three shots over the 10th (double bogey), 11th and 12th (bogey).

LAUREN WHYTE WINS THE GIRLS UNDER 18 TITLE
Lauren Whyte, 16-year-old St Regulus club member from St Andrews,
will represent Scotland in next week's European Young Masters in Hungary as the new Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish U18 girls' champion.
She beat Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), 18, by 4 and 2 in this morning's 18-hole final over the Crail Golfing Society's Craighead course in Fife.
Lauren, who had beaten the top seed and 2010 champion Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) in the semi-finals, played quality golf to take the measure of international team-mate Ailsa, pictured below, who is the Angus women's county champion (but not the Angus girls title-winner this year).

TROON'S CONNIE JAFFREY LOSES IN THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE SCOTTISH GIRLS
Report by Colin Farqharson
Lauren Whyte from St Andrews will play under-18 international team-mate Ailsa Summers from Carnoustie in Saturday morning's (9am) final of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish girls' golf championship over the Crail Golfing Society Craighead course.
The four leading seeds were all knocked out in the morning quarter-finals.
St Regulus club member Whyte, the No 9 qualifier, beat the top seed and 2010 champion, Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) by 7 and 6, and was roughly level par in her one-hole semi-final win over Rachel Walker (Dumfries and County) who had beaten the No 4 seed, Jessica Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) by 2 and 1 in the morning.
Whyte won the first, third and fourth for an early three-hole lead but Walker pegged her back to all square by winning the ninth, 10th and 14th.
A birdie 4 at the 15th put Whyte in the lead again and the last three holes were halved.
Ailsa Summers, the Angus women's and girls' county champion, beat the No 3 seed, Nicola Callander (Mill Green, Herts) by one hole in the quarter-finals and then squeezed through to the final at the 19th against Tegan Seivwright (Deeside), the dark horse of the tournament.
Seivwright qualified in 23rd position but had a series of good wins to reach the last four, including a two-hole victory in the quarter-finals over the No 2 seed, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies).
In the semi-final, there was never more than a hole in it either way and it took a birdie-par-birdie finish under pressure by Summers to reach the final for the first time
Ailsa had lost the 15th and 16th to be one down to Seivwright but squared the match with a birdie 2 at the short 17th, halved the 18th with a par 4 and then won the first extra hole, with a birdie 4.
Summers was roughly one under par at the finish.
Germany-based Fiona Liddell won the Ansley Reid Salver tournament for those who just failed to qualify for the scratch championship match-play. She beat Molly Stewart (Murcar Links) by 4 and 3 in the final.
