Ireland win the Seniors Hole Internationals with reduced play format

The Irish Winning Team

Ireland has won the Women’s Senior Home Internationals for the third year running after edging out England in the weather-affected round-robin event at County Sligo.
The event was reduced to two days after severe weather was forecast for the third and final day and therefore the decision was made to reschedule and play the five singles games in each match on the second day so that a winner could be determined.
Ireland and England finished tied for first place on 2½ points after winning their matches against Scotland and Wales, and then sharing the points in the final match against each other.
Therefore, it was the defending champions who retained the trophy thanks to a superior points total across all three matches played – 12 to England’s 11.
Scotland finished third after securing a point with a win against Wales.
The 2020 Women’s Senior Home Internationals will be played at West Kilbride from 22-24 September.

Kirsten Brown wins Autumn Trophy at Alyth Golf Club

Kirsten Brown

From the Scottish Golf View Website

Kirsten Brown (St. Andrews University )  held off reigning R and A Scholar Champion Lorna McClymont (SRUC) to win the 14th Autumn Trophy for students at Alyth Golf Club

Kirsten Brown started the day with a two-stroke lead over Lorna McClymont and used steady, bogey-free golf to extend that lead to three at the turn. Birdies at 10 and 12 allowed McClymont to get back within two shots and a grandstand finish looked set.
Unfortunately for Lorna, bogeys followed on 13 and 14 which allowed Brown the luxury of two dropped shots in the final four holes on the way to victory by those two strokes.
A one under total of 212 for the tournament showed the consistently high level of golf she had produced over all three days and she was fully deserving of a first BUCS/SSS Tour victory.

In third place, St Andrews' Megan Ashley was in a contest with herself – three early bogeys meaning she was too many back to fully challenge for the lead but also confident of staying ahead of those behind. Birdies at 10 and 12, before a double at 14 and bogey at 16, left Ashley to finish +7 for the tournament, six back from McClymont but five ahead of the chasing pack.
Brown’s quality golf was enough for St. Andrew’s second team to upset their first team, Cassie Kneen and Rachel Maswi joining with Kirsten in taking the team competition by two strokes.

Clubs wary of being forced to use Scottish Golf’s own app

by Martin Dempster: from the Scotsman Newspaper

It was a mystery why a London-based newspaper ran a prominent story on Friday about Scottish Golf’s new all-singing, all-dancing app, given that it was unveiled last December at the governing body’s second national conference in Edinburgh.

Andrew McKinlay (Chief Executive - Scottish Golf)
Excuse me for being cynical, but it appears to have been a smokescreen because, on the same day, affiliated clubs received a communication about a directive from Scottish Golf that has been described by one club official as a “very dangerous move”. It has even been claimed that some clubs are now looking into the possibility of joining England Golf instead.

What on earth could prompt such a thought? Well, as part of the implementation of the new World Handicapping System (WHS) in 2020, it appears Scottish Golf is trying to eliminate independent software companies – some of which have long relationships with clubs – from the Scottish market to effectively control things for themselves.

“Scottish Golf will now facilitate the administration of the handicaps of all Scottish Golf club members,” stated the WHS update. “Current Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who provide handicapping software for clubs will no longer be given any access to handicapping calculations or any handicap data through open APIs [Application programming interface] or any other means.
“Clubs will still have the option to use the other services provided by these ISVs but Scottish Golf will become the centralised control point of all handicapping in Scotland. This transformation supports our vision of growing the game in Scotland and we feel that now is the right time to make this change.”

One thing that the document doesn’t highlight is that Scottish Golf is not working in tandem with the other members of The Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) on this. Indeed, Scottish Golf chief executive Andrew McKinlay and David Kernohan, Scottish Golf Limited’s CONGU board member, walked out of a meeting last week before a discussion on the ISV licence for the WHS was discussed

I believe McKinlay almost didn’t attend the meeting at all due to Scottish Golf’s position but, in a statement, he insisted that the governing body intends to remain a full member of CONGU along with the other home nations. “We have an important part to play in the roll out of the WHS and the Rules of Handicapping going forward,” he apparently told fellow delegates before departing the room.

As the official licensee, Scottish Golf will perform all handicap calculations from all authorised formats of play as outlined in the new WHS rules. It will then publish a player’s newly-calculated handicap index and make this accessible to all clubs and golfers. This will be done through a new central database of handicaps (CDH) and other platforms that are being developed for implementation next year.

“It is very dangerous moving forward for Scottish Golf to shut out the other providers,” said one match secretary.
“It effectively means clubs will be forced to use the Scottish Golf system, even though it cannot perform essential back office tasks like member direct debits, etc.
“The new Scottish Golf Venue Management System (SMS) is impressive from the brief example I have seen, but clubs will have to pay for different systems for all of their different needs while Scottish Golf take a booking fee on every tee time booked.
“Scottish Golf don’t have a very good track record with developing computer systems and, if they are the only show in town, they have to get it 100 per cent correct as there will be no back-up option. I have to admit to being extremely worried about the impact on clubs. Sadly, I predict chaos and losing even more people to the game before this is completed.”

Speaking about the new app last November, McKinlay described it is a “game-changer that could potentially bring in millions” as Scottish Golf bids to lead the way in trying to breathe new life into the game after more than 75,000 registered golfers were lost in this country from 2005 to 2017, with two courses in the Glasgow area, Eastwood and Mount Ellen, forced to close this year and Letham Grange in Angus set to shut in a matter of weeks.

On the evidence of that aforementioned article last week,it would appear that the new app is finally ready to be launched, with the main target market being the “nomads” or, to give them their proper title, non-affiliated pay-per-play golfers.

For the app to be a success, Scottish Golf surely need to have the clubs on their side. Effectively holding a gun to their head over something else doesn’t exactly seem to be the way to go about it?

LAURA MURRAY CLAIMS SECOND LETAS TITLE AT RÜGENWALDER MÜHLE LADIES OPEN

Laura Murray - (Photo courtesy of the LET Access Tour)

Scotland’s Laura Murray produced some sensational golf to claim her second LETAS title, with a -14 total, in the Rügenwalder Mühle Ladies Open at Golf Club am Meer in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. The 31-year-old led from round one, opening with a stunning eight under par, 64, to take a two shot lead over Germany’s Luisa Dittrich who recorded a 66 on the opening day.

Murray was solid throughout the week, driving the ball extremely well and producing some impressive iron play. When the Scot looks back on her win, she will probably remember the decision to try out a different putter that sat at home for some three years without being used.

“If feels incredible, it’s really good. I’ve been working really hard for this all season and I feel I’ve been knocking on the door recently and nice to finally cross the line and get the job done. I think my attitude on the course was pretty good. I just kept telling myself to keep smiling and just concentrated on what I was doing and holed a few putts and that kept me smiling a bit more. I’ve been playing so solid it was quite a nice relaxing week for me. And my attitude certainly helped me through it.”

“I put this other putter in my bag. It’s been sitting in my apartment for like three years and I just thought why not let’s chuck it in. Yes, definitely, sometimes just changing something can get a different feeling and it certainly helped this week so I think that will be staying in the bag.”

Murray’s win has catapulted her into 4th place on the Order of Merit and she now is in within touching distance of securing her playing rights on the Ladies European Tour for the 2020 season, but Murray doesn’t plan to get ahead of herself.

“I’m going to approach it in the same way because it worked so well this week so now I know I’m 4th then there’s a good chance of securing that top 5 in the Order of Merit. I’m looking forward to see what we can do next week and to see what the course is going to offer and I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Other Scots
29th: Jane Turner - Even Par
46th: Gabrielle MacDonald +7
Missed Cut -- Rachael Taylor and Hannah McCook

The season finale gets underway at Golf de La Largue in France, from the 4 – 6 October.

Hannah Darling finishes tied 6th in the World Girls Championships

Carmen, Hannah and Katy
Scotland's Hannah Darling  finished T6 in the world Girls Championship in Canada yesterday.

She had scores of 73, 66, 71 and 76 for 286 - 11 shots behind the title winner from Thailand, Atthaya Thitikul who had scores of 73, 63, 71 and 70 for 277.

The Thai's superb second round of 63 was the score, in the final analysis, that separated her from the field.

Two  other Scots in the field, Carmen Griffiths (78-81-75-74)  for 309, and Katy Alexander (83-80-86-79) finished 39th and 58th respectively.

Laura Murry leads on Day 1 of the Rügenwalder Mühle Ladies Open

Laura Murray
Scotland’s Laura Murray claims the day one lead at Rügenwalder Mühle Ladies Open with a stunning eight-under round of 64 at the Golf Club am Meer. Germany’s Luisa Dittrich ended the day two adrift of Murray after a terrific six-under 66 in her home event, whilst Sweden’s Isabella Deilert is a shot further back on -5.

Murray made the perfect start to her round with successive birdies on the opening two holes in Bad Zwischenahn. A huge drive led to a third birdie at the par-5 seventh before a rare missed drive at the ninth slipped the leader back to two-under at the midway point.

After a solid opening nine holes, the experienced Scot found her rhythm down the back nine with six birdies and no dropped shots coming back. Murray has been frustrated in recent weeks with strong tee-to-green play being let down on the putting surface but speaking after the round Murray had no such frustrations with a change of putter proving the key to her change in fortunes at the German course.

The other Scot in the field is Jane Turner who finished on 2 under and who lies in 11th place. She was delighted to have no bogeys in her round

With the Rügenwalder Mühle Ladies Open the final event before the season ending Road to La Largue Final, Friday’s second round is crucial for many players with vital qualifying points up for grabs. Overnight leader Murray will be conscious that a large group of players remain in contention and equally determined to secure a LET Access Series victory as the end of the season approaches setting the scene for a terrific day’s play once again in Bad Zwischenahn.

Hannah Darling has a Hole in One in the World Junior Girls Championships

‪A hole-in-one helped Hannah Darling on her way to carding a 66 in the 2nd round of the World Junior Girls Championships in Canada yesterday.

‪Hannah currently sits in second place on 5 under par - three shots behind ‬Atthaya ThitiKul from Thailand.

Carman Griffiths and Katy Alexander are in 45th and 55th position respectively.

CATHKIN BRAES ARE THE 2019 GREENLEES CHAMPIONS

Some happy Cathkin Team Members
Cathkin Braes played their final Greenlees Match today at home against Douglas Park.
The home team only needed 3.5 points for victory but with a very strong team they defeated the visitors 8.5- 0.5 to win the title from Troon Ladies.

Cathkin Braes Captain Susan Ramsay present Lindsay Mclean
with a bottle of wine for her hole in one
Douglas Park required only one point to remain in the 1st division, but this was not to be. The only highlight for them was Lindsay McLean having a HOLE IN ONE at the thirteenth hole.

They are joined by Ranfurly Castle to be demoted to Division 2 in 2020. West Kilbride stay in Division 1 by virtue of a countback on matches won (2 points for a win and one point for a draw)

In Division 2 Whitecraigs have finished on 43.5 points and Haggs Castle play Lenzie on Friday 27th and require a 7-2 victory to win the division.
Please note : 2 points to be deducted from Cathcart Castle match against Old Ranfurly (A player did not turn up)

Scottish Vets Round up from Blairgowrie including the Beddows Quaich and Tony Moffat Memorial Trophies

Fiona Hunter and Sheena Wood

Championship: We have a worthy 2019 Champion in Sheena Wood (Northern) who was pushed all the way by Fiona Hunter (Galloway)

The match was all square after 4 holes but Fiona built up a steady lead and was 3 up after 10 holes. Sheena fought back and the match was all square after 14. It looked like it would stay that way after 16 but Fiona sank a long putt to take her 1 up. Once again Sheena squared the match, on the 17th.
A tense finish on the 18th saw Sheena pitch onto the green from a tricky lie and once they were on the green, Fiona conceded the match. This was a game of high quality golf with a better ball of 3 over which, given that the course was playing its full length, was very good scoring.  We were all impressed by Fiona’s brilliant short game and I think we should all be out there over the winter with the aim of getting ‘up and down’ from anywhere off the green. It’ll pay dividends.

Some of the main prizewinners on Day 1
Patrick Rosebowl singles over Rosemount: Congratulations to Gillian Kyle on an excellent score of 76 net 73 which was the best scratch and net score of the day. The score was particularly good as Gillian teed off in the first game when it was particularly damp and misty.

President Maureen McKerrow with Linda Mcdonald with the Greensomes trophies --
Lorna Bennett missing

Beddows Quaichs and Tony Moffat Memorial Trophies: Linda Mcdonald and Lorna Bennett  played lovely golf and returned an excellent scratch 76 Nett 70.6.  -- CLICK HERE FOR ALL THE SCORES
