Bev New wins the British Seniors at West Kilbride

Bev New from Lansdown, Somerset, is the new Senior British ladies’ open amateur champion.
Making her debut in the tournament after reaching the eligibility age of 50, the former Ladies European Tour player who won the English title and Curtis Cup honours as an amateur, shot the low round of the championship today to come through to snatch victory from joint fifth overnight, four shots off the pace.
Bev had rounds of 78, 84 and 73 for 19 over par 235 – scores that reflect how bad the conditions were for much of the three days of the championship.
The over-20mph wind of the first day returned, increasing in intensity from noon.
New, who had been joint first-round leader on 78 with Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool, packed four birdies into her brilliant, wind-cheating final round.
Bev said she had come to Scotland with no great expectations and was genuinely surprised at how well she had done.
She thought the weather over the three days was the worst she had ever played in but despite that she had enjoyed the week tremendously ... "Fantastic" was how she summed up her victory.
"Everything in my game just fell into place in the final day, the driving, the approach shots, the putting. It all came together to help me put together a 73."
"I don't know if this victory will make me go out and play more golf ... I just don't have the time. Maybe it will. I'll certainly defend the title in Northern Ireland next year.

Kilmacolm Excile Maureen Richmond still leads the British Strokeplay Championship at West Kilbride

Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond, a Curtis Cup player, British and Scottish girls champion in her youth and now a GP at Wallasey, is one good round away from adding to a glittering golfing CV that has been virtually dormant since she became a GP several decades ago.
At the end of a long, long day – the start of play was delayed 2hr 15min until 45mph early-morning winds abated – Dr Richmond and her playing partners finished their second rounds almost in darkness at 7.45pm.
Maureen added an 80 to her opening round of 78 and her 36-hole tally of 158 gives her a one-stroke lead from England’s Caroline Marron (Bromborough), recent winner of the English seniors’ stroke-play title, and Ireland’s Helen Jones (Strabane), winner last week by six strokes of the Irish senior women’s open amateur championship.
Caroline had a 77 and Helen a 79, both for 159.
Defending champion Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen) is by no means out of the hunt. She had an 80 for 161 and is only three shots off the pace.
The field was cut to 40 and ties for tomorrow’s final round. Players had to have two-round aggregates of 173 or better to survive.
“I had a very poor putting round,” said Maureen Richmond. “I missed too many putts of around three to four feet.”
She had a double bogey 7 at the long seventh and bogeys at the first, second, fifth, 10th, 12th and 18th in halves of 41 (five over par) and 39 (three over).
Although the conditions were easier than was the case for the first round, players were still buffeted around by a wind of around 20mph.
Caroline Marron’s 77 included birdies at the sixth and 13th in halves of 38 and 39.
Helen Jones had halves of 40 and 39.
Other Scots in the picture after 36 holes are Ladybank’s European seniors team hero Lorna Bennett with a 79 for 163 and Blairgowrie’s Heather Anderson with an 81 for 164.
“I just played solidly,” said Lorna. “Nothing spectacular. Just kept going.”
Heather was drifting out of the top 20 when she reached the turn in 43 but she came back in 38, good going in the conditions, to salvage an 81.

Play will resume at 10:15 at West Kilbride

The winds were even stronger at West Kilbride this morning than they were yesterday. But they dropped sufficiently for play in the second round to start at 10.15am - a delay of 2hr 15min from the scheduled time.
That means the last players will not tee off until 3.45pm.
There will be a cut to the leading 40 players and ties at the end of the second round.
"We had a test of the conditions early this morning and the balls were being blown off the greens, but now the wind has dropped enough for us to start play for the day at 10.15am," said Tournament Director Susan Simpson after a second course/wind inspection after 9.30am.

The winds are even stronger at West Kilbride this morning (Wednesday) than they were yesterday!
The start of the second round in the Senior British women's open amateur championship has been delayed from 8am as scheduled to 10am.
"We will have another look at the situation then," said Tournament Director Susan Simpson.
"We had a test of the conditions early this morning and the balls were being blown off the greens."
If the decision is made to call of play today, the championship will be reduced to 36 holes with everybody playing in the second and last round on Thursday.

Senior Ladies Weather the Storm at West Kilbride

Eight Scots in the leading 20 of the Senior British women’s open amateur stroke-play golf championship at the end of a storm-lashed day at West Kilbride was a good effort on the part of the home brigade.
Winds of up to 50mph … lashing rain … a hailstorm … it was all there in North Ayrshire. But the over-50 female golfers are made of stern stuff.
Portaloos out on the course were blown over (fortunately no one in them at the time).
A scoreboard came crashing down when the support legs simply sheered off due to the force of the wind.
Umbrellas were either blown to bits or last seen heading for Northern Ireland.
The clubhouse was awash with horror stories from happenings out on the course. The Canadian who finished second in the Irish seniors open last week required 97 shots to get round, including an 11 at the third and an 8 at the 10th.
Yet there was never any suggestion that the Ladies Golf Union would show some mercy and call the players in. The course was never flooded and remained open. The balls were never oscillating despite the gale. Let the show go on.
And from a field of 90 players there nil No Returns and only one retirement.
Well done, girls!
At the end of day that was more like January than mid-September, Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool), pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and another former Curtis Cup player, Bev New from Somerset were the only two players to break 80.
They go into the second of three rounds sharing the pole position on six-over-par 78, one over the CSS (Reduction only).
Dr Richmond, a GP at Wallasey, is better remembered as Mo Walker, the teenager who won Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy honours, the British Girls Championship and three Scottish girls titles – and then, at the age of 19 entered medicine, virtually ringing down the curtain on what could have been a fabulous golf career.
“I only play in one big event a year – this one,” said 55-year-old Maureen. “I just can’t take time off from being a GP.
“How did I get it round in 78? In weather as bad as this you just have to get your head down and make the best of it. No point in feeling sorry for yourself. Just get on with it. And it helped that I am still pretty long off the tee.”
The other Scots who did well were Tain’s Anne Ryan, joint 10th with an 82, Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie), Jane Finnie (Troon Ladies) and May Hughes (Lanark), joint 12th on 83, and Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Mary Smith (Tain), Fiona Anderson (Formby Ladies) and Fiona De Vries (St Rule), sharing 19th position.

The one-day Scotland v England Annual Schools Golf International at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today was abandoned after the morning foursomes because of the high winds and rain.
England had led 3-0 at the end of the girls' foursomes

Lanarkshire September Spoon

The Lanarkshire September Spoon was played on a dry day today over Mount Ellen. The course was in good condition and the food was very good.
The winner of the silver division and of the Centenary Rosebowl was Adelia McEwan , Hayston, with a net 67 . Adelia won the Centenary Trophy earlier in the year in her first County Competition. Today was her second County Competition.
Lesley Lloyd had the lowest scratch score.
Jean Macintyre won the bronze division and Jean Allan won the breast cancer nearest the pin at the 11th.

The Scottish Mixed Foursomes was held at Haggs Castle Golf Club today. Just back from the Home Internationals in Cardiff after the fantastic win by the Scots, Internationalist Louise Kenney was able to maintain form and with partner Paul Shields won the Championship with a Gross 71 by 2 shots.

Haggs Castle Lady Captain Jennifer Mack and son Gavin playing off a combined handicap of 4.5 won the 2nd Scratch Prize by virtue of the better inward half with a gross 73 from past Scottish Mixed Champions Karen and Stephen Marshall of Baberton. Jennifer and Gavin's net score of 68.5 was the best of the day.

Club Golf Coaching at Erskine Golf Club in November --- Would you like to help ?

ClubGolf have agreed to do a Level 1 coaches course at Erskine on the 6th - 7th November.
Craig Chalmers the new West of Scotland ClubGolf rep has been telling people but they need more. The minimum number needed to hold a course is 6 and Janette McCartney from Erskine has about 5 at Erskine wanting to do it but 2 are now not available over that weekend.

Closing date: 6 weeks before the course (to allow the home study pack to be viewed) That makes it the 25th Sept so not much time left.

The Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship at West Kilbride Golf Club is due to start on Tuesday 14th September. It takes the same format as the recent Irish Senior Ladies strokeplay - one round of 18 holes on each of two consecutive days - Tuesday and Wednesday 14th and 15th September and the top 40 go forward to the third round on Thursday 16th September. There are 90 entrants from thirteen different countries although the bulk are undoubtedly from the home nations -

Scotland win the Home Internationals for the 1st time in 19 years

Scotland has won the Home International Matches championship for the first time since 1991.
In a nerve-tingling finish to the three days, and on an afternoon on non-stop rain, the Scots beat Ireland 5-4 in the title-decider.
“It’s a great feeling to be taking the title back to Scotland,” said team captain Lesley Nicholson. “It went right down to the wire and my players were great.”
The Scots took a 2-1 lead from the morning foursomes and shared the singles 3-3.
The fifth and winning point for Scotland was delivered by Pamela Pretswell who beat Curtis Cup team-mate Leona Maguire with a birdie at the last hole.
Ireland cancelled out Scotland’s one-point lunchtime lead when Danielle McVeigh beat Jane Turner by 6 and 5. McVeigh was three up after four holes, having birdied the second, third and fourth, and she never relinquished her grip on the outcome. Turner won only one hole, the fifth, against a Curtis Cup player in top form. McVeigh increased her lead with wins at the sixth, 11th, 12th and 13th.
Scotland edged ahead 3-2 with a two-hole win by Kelsey MacDonald over Mary Dowling in a battle of the Scottish and Irish champions.
There was never more than a hole in it until the 18th green with first one player, then the other having a one-hole lead. All square after 15 holes, MacDonald won the 16th with a par 4, halved the 17th and birdied the 18th for a two-hole win.
Dowling had birdies at the fourth, 11th and 13th. MacDonald had an eagle 3 at the fifth and that birdie at the last.
Louise Kenney increased Scotland’s overall advantage to 4-2 when she beat Sinead O’Sullivan by 3 and 2, having been three up at the turn and four ahead after 12
Then Ireland won a third point through Charlene Reid who beat Megan Briggs by 3 and 1. Two down after 11, Charlene turned the match around by winning the 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th, with a birdie.
But Scotland got the title-winning fifth point when Pamela Pretswell beat Leona Maguire by one hole, thanks to a pitch-and-putt birdie 4 at the long 18th. It had been a classic match-play encounter with Pretswell two up after five but two down after 11 to the resurgted Leona. Pretswell won the 12th and 13th to square the match but slipped one down again when Maguire won the 15th with a birdie 2.
The Scot squared the match with a 4 at the 16th, halved the 17th and then produced that all-important birdie at the 18th.
Lisa Maguire rang the curtain down on a tremendous afternoon’s play by both teams when she won by one hole against Rachael Watton. There was never more than a hole in either way.

Anna Telfer wins the West Vets Autumn Meeting at Milngavie

Anna Telfer (Milngavie) won the West Vets Autumn Meeting with a net 73 over her home course today by virtue of the better inward half from Janette McCartney (Erskine). She also had the best Scratch Score of the day with a 78.
Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) had the next best scratch score of 79.

Scotland beat England 5 - 4 on Day 2 of the Home Interationals

Scotland have not been champions since 1991 at Aberdovey. Ireland last won the Miller Trophy in 2004.at Royal Porthcawl.
The Scots and the Irish are the only teams with 100 per cent win records after two days’of match-play. Today Scotland beat England 5-4 while Ireland beat Wales 6-3.

Both West of Scotland Players Pamela Pretwell (Bothwell Castle) and Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) were stars in helping Scotland to beat England in the Home Internationals at Cardiff by contributing to 4 of the 5 points they got today.

Douglas Park and Milngavie played each other at Douglas Park yesterday. They started in the lashing rain which had been non stop all morning. The match, however was able to be completed with the result being a halved match.
The 2010 Greenlees Trophy is now down to the final stages with Milngavie, Cathkin Braes and Kilmarnock Barassie all within a near shout of the Trophy. But who knows Troon who have 2 matches to play may come in WITH A LAST FLURRY !!.
It looks like Whitecraigs have won Division 2 and Largs Division 3

Scottish Champion Kelsey MacDonald put her side ahead overall quite early in the afternoon with a surprisingly big win over Amy Boulden.
Kelsey won by 6 and 5, losing only the first hole. She won the second, third, fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth and 12th to go six up and a half at the 13th ended the contest.

Scotland went 2 points ahead when Pamela Pretswell won on the 18th green against Gemma Bradbury who had the better of the outward half and was two up at one stage. But the Scot, who recently won the British Stroke-Play title, came on to her game on the inward half. The turning point really came when Pretswell won three holes in a row from the eighth to turn a one-hole deficit into a one-hole lead.

Bradbury did get back on terms with a 2 at the short 15th but Pretswell responded with a birdie to go back to one up at the 16th. Bradbury wasn’t finished yet. She birdied the 17th to square the match. It all boiled down to the par-5 18th which Pretswell won with a 5 to a 6 for a hard-earned one-hole victory.

Wales got their first singles point from the sixth tie with Becky Harries beating Louise Kenney 4 and 3. Harries laid the foundation of her victory by moving into a four-hole lead after only seven holes. Kenney came back at her by winning the eighth, 10th and 11th, narrowing the gap to only one hole.
But Harries birdied the 12th to double her lead again and further wins for her at the 13th and 15th sealed her victory.

With three ties to finish, Scotland led in all of them but, with memories of the dramatic downturn in their fortunes over the final hour’s play against Wales 12 months ago, none of their supporters was counting their chickens.

Teenage Scottish debutante Rachael Watton ensured that her side would gain at least a draw when she beat Sam Birks by 3 and 2. Birks had the edge over the first few holes but Watton settled to win holes five, six and seventh and, from one up at the turn, pulled away from her opponent on the inward half.

Laura Murray clinched victory for Scotland with a two-hole win over Welsh champion Tara Davies. Murray was two holes up after eight but Davies won the ninth and 10th.

Murray got her nose in front again with a birdie 3 at the 14th and went to up at the 16th. Davies kept her hopes alive by winning the 17th to be one down on the 18th tee but Murray clinched victory by winning the last with a par 5.

Megan Briggs put the icing on the cake for Scotland by beating Kath O’Connor 2 and 1 after being two down at the turn. The Scot won the 12th and the 13th with birdies and they halved the short 16th in birdie 2s before Briggs produced yet another birdie at the 17th for victory.

Laura wins for the 75th time and Kylie is the leading Scot in Austria

Laura Davies fired a closing 70 to win the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open presented by Raiffeisen in Austria yesterday.
It was her 75th career victory and third at the same event at Golf Club Foehrenwald in Wiener Neustadt after wins in 2007 and 2008. She was also second in 2009.
Congratulations go to West of Scotland's Kylie Walker who made the cut and was the leading Scot

Lanark's Pat Hutton wins the SLGA Regional Finals

Lanark's Pat Hutton won the SLGA Medal's Grand Final Silver Division at Crieff Golf Club today with a net 74 off six of a handicap.
She won by a shot from former Aberdeenshire champion Sara Mathieson (Royal Musselburgh), playing off five, with Janis Davison from Eyemouth in third place with a net 76 off 14.l
Caroline Marshall (Newtonstewart) won the Bronze Division on a better inward half from Lynn Gray (Lauder).

Both had net 75s, Caroline off 21, Lynn off 101.

Anne McGonagle (Fraserburgh) finished third with a net 76 off 21.
The par and CSS were 74 and 24 qualifiers from the regional finals took part.

Scotland are the European Senior Team Champions

Scotland have pulled off a famous victory in the final of the European Senior Women's amateur team championship at Sporting Club, Berlin.
They beat the favourites and top seeds England 3-2 to win the gold medals for the first time.
Qualifying sixth of eight for the match-play stages, Pamela Williamson's squad had scored good wins on their way to the final but England were the overwhelming favourites.
When England took a 2-0 lead in the final, the writing looked to be on the wall for the Scots but they came back with a tremendous rally to tie it up at 2-2.
Then Tain's Anne Ryan, a debutante at his level of the game, won the title-gaining victory over Susan Dye in the last match to finish.
Anne, whose sister Mary Smith is also in the team, was two holes up at the turn against Susan Dye and not only maintained that advantage over the inward half, she added to it to win by 3 and 2.
Earlier Caroline Masson, four up at the turn, had beaten Fiona de Vries by 5 and 4.
And England had gone 2-0 up when Rozalyn Adams, also four up at the turn, had gone on to win by 5 and 4 against Heather Anderson from Alyth.
Then the Scotland glory run for gold started.
Mary Smith (Tain) and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) won the foursomes tie by 2 and 1 against Janet Melville and Felicity Christine after being all square at the turn.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) levelled it overall at 2-2 by beating Christine Quinn by one hole after leading by that margin at the turn.
Switzerland beat Ireland 3 1/2-1 1 1/2 in the play-off for third place and the bronze medals.

Scotland Seniors win against Ireland to reach the final of the European Team Championships

Scotland are through to the final of the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Sporting Club Berlin.
The team of over-50s, captained by Pamela Williamson (Baberton), beat Ireland 3-2 in the semi-finals today (Friday) to assure themselves of gaining at least the silver medals.
But the Scots are playing so well they will be fancying their chance of striking gold against the No 1 seeds and favourites England who beat Switzerland 3 1/2-1 1/2 in the other semi-final.
