Lauren Whyte (Fife) and Eilidh Briggs (Renfrewshire) are 1st and 2nd in the Scottish Schools Championship
Lauren Whyte (Fife) won the girls’ titles at the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schools golf championships over the two courses at Murrayshall Hotel, near Perth this week.
Lauren Whyte, a St Regulus Club, St Andrews member who did very well in the recent Scottish women’s championship at Machrihanish, had scores of 71 over the Lynedoch course and 72 over the main circuit for a three-over-par total of 143.
She won by one shot from Renfrewshire women’s county champion Eilidh Briggs, a member of Kilmacolm GC, who reached the final of the Scottish women’s championship.
Eilidh had scores of 74 and 70 at Murrayshall for 144, the same total as Aboyne’s Kimberley Beveridge (South Aberdeenshire) who had rounds of 70 and 74. Briggs’ better second round was the tie-breaker in deciding who received the second place prize
Only two shots separated the first three pairs in the girls’ team championship. Fife won the day with a total of 309, thanks to the sterling efforts of Lauren Whyte and Chloe Goadby.
South Aberdeenshire (Kimberley Beveridge and Shannon McWilliam) were runners-up, only a shot behind on 309, and one stroke further back 309 were the third-placed North Ayrshire pairing of Connie Jaffrey and Mhairi McKay.
The Paul Lawrie Foundation Salver for the best handicap total by a girl was won by Kirsten Pryde (Aberdeen City). Playing off 13, she had net rounds of 65 and 68 for 133.
Runner-up on 137 was Ellie Bryce (South Lanarkshire) with net scores of 68 and 69 off 19.
Molly Stewart (Aberdeen City) came third on 139 with scores off 69 and 70 off 15.

Closing Dates for Scottish Girls and Under 21's Championships
Hi All,
I appreciate this will be a busy time for you all with County Jamboree's coming up but I would appreciate if you could remind your Junior County members that the closing dates for the Scottish Girls Championship and the Scottish Ladies' Junior Open Stroke Play Championship are on Monday 13 June and Monday 20 June respectively. Entries must be received by 12 noon on the appropriate date.

REBECCA WILSON WINS MUNROSS TROPHY BY SIX STROKES
Monifieth’s Rebecca Wilson, playing out of the Grange club, recaptured the form that won her Scotland junior international honours, when she won the Munross Trophy, an SLGA Order of Merit 36-hole event, at Montrose Links today (Sunday).
Rebecca won it by the impressive margin of six strokes with rounds of 70 and 73 for a three-under-par total of 143.
Kilmacolm teenager Eilidh Briggs, beaten finalist in the recent Scottish women’s amateur championship at Machrihanish) and Rachael Walker (Dumfries and County) both totaled 149.
Eilidh had rounds of 76 and 73 to Rachael’s 75 and 75 and received the second scratch prize by virtue of having the better second round.
Rachael Walker won the first handicap prize ahead of Ashley Smith (Monifieth) and Emma Greenlees (Dumfries and Galloway).

Congratulations go to Loudoun Gowf Club Captain Liz Keohone, on a very successful annual Charity Cup day on Sunday 29th May, 2011, in which 60 teams from all over Ayrshire took part. Every hole was sponsored by companies and individuals and a large number of prizes were awarded during the day.
John Beck said ‘This is the sixth similar event the club have held for Ayrshire Cancer Support and everyone involved on the day should be very proud of their efforts. A great many people throughout Ayrshire have benefited from their support and generosity.
We are extremley grateful to the members of Loudoun Gowf Club and all the organisations who donated prizes for raising such an amazing amount for us.
We are experiencing a very large increase in the demand for our transport and clinical services and this very generous donation will be will be used to help us meet this demand and for the benefit of cancer patients and their families in Ayrshire.'

Five of the team of nine players selected to represent Great Britain and Ireland against the Continent of Europe in the Vagliano Trophy match at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, South Wales on Friday and Saturday, June 24-25 have never played in a Curtis Cup match or this biennial fixture against the best amateurs on the mainland of Europe.

Amy Boulden, Kelsey MacDonald and Kelly Tidy will make their debuts for Great Britain and Ireland in the Astor Trophy matches against Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes from June 15 to 19.
For Louise Kenney and Stephanie Meadow the Vagliano Trophy match will be their first appearance in a Great Britain and Ireland team.
The team of nine chosen to play the Continent of Europe is made up of the five selected some weeks ago for the Astor Trophy – Amy Boulden, Kelsey MacDonald, Kelly Tidy, Holly Clyburn and Pamela Pretswell - with the additon of Louise Kenney, Danielle McVeigh, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow.
Irish players were not available for selection to the Astor Trophy line-up.
Kenney, a Dunfermline schoolteacher, has recently won the Scottish women’s close amateur championship at Machrihanish for the first time, having been beaten in the two previous years’ finals. She won the Scottish girls’ match-play championship in 2000 and lost in the final a year later. Earlier this season Louise finished third in the Helen Holm Scottish women’s open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon. Like Kelsey MacDonald and Pamela Pretswell, she was a member of the Scotland team who won last September’s Ladies’ Home Internationals title at Whitchurch (Cardiff) for the first time in 19 years.
Danielle McVeigh is also a national champion. She won the Irish close championship last week, six years after winning the Irish girls’ title.
Sixteen-year-old twin Leona Maguire won the Portuguese women’s open amateur stroke-play championship by the astonishing margin of 15 strokes over 72 holes earlier in the year. In April, she almost repeated her 2009 victory in the “Helen Holm” but double-bogeyed the last hole at Royal Troon to lose the lead and finish second, a shot behind Charlotte Ellis, who is one of the reserves.
Stephanie Meadow, 19, has had a brilliant freshman season for Alabama University on the US women’s college circuit, winning three tournaments and being named to the All-American Team by the NCAA coaches at the end of their season. Born in Northern Ireland, Stephanie played in three Irish girls championship finals – 2004, 2006 and 2007, winning the Under-18s’ title in 2006. Stephanie has spent the last few years in America. She is currently No 12 in the Women’s World Amateur Rankings, two places ahead of Leona Maguire.
UNDER-16 GIRLS’ MATCH AT ROYAL PORTHCAWL
For the first time, a six-a-side match for Under-16 years girls, representing Great Britain and Ireland on one side, and the Continent of Europe on the other, will be played in conjunction with the Vagliano Trophy fixture at Royal Porthcawl.

Bronte Law beat Chloe Williams in a play-off for the SLGA Under-16 girls’ championship at Strathmore in April. Amber Ratcliffe finished third and Georgia Hall eighth in that early-season event.
Clara Young, at 14, is the youngest ever East Lothian women’s county champion.

Pamela Pretwsell is the leading Scot after the 1st Round at the St Rule Trophy in St Andrews
Despite high winds sweeping over St Andrews, four players broke the par of 75 for the New Course and they share the lead on two-under-par 73 after the first round of the St Rule Trophy 54-hole tournament today.
The final two rounds will be played over the Old Course on Sunday.
Ireland's Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) and Madelene Sagstrom (Sweden), ranked No 4 and No 5 in the European Golf Association female amateur ratings at the moment, are joint leaders with Breanna Elliott and Ashley Ona, both members of the Australian team who will be bidding to win the Astor Trophy in an international match-play team event at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire next month.
Leading English player is 15-year-old Bronte Law (Bramhall), who won the SLGA Under-16s' open title at Strathmore in April, She is on the level par 75 mark.
Top Scot is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), holder of the British women's open amateur stroke-play title, on 77.

SGU AREAS VOTE 10-6 AGAINST AMALGAMATION WITH SLGA
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
This evening (May 26) the Scottish Golf Union held a Special Meeting with the sole purpose of considering the amalgamation (with the SLGA) proposal. This proposal has been widely consulted upon with Areas, Counties and Clubs. The proposal was approved at the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Special Meeting yesterday (May 25).
The Scottish Golf Union’s shareholders, comprising the sixteen Area Associations, voted 10 to 6 against the amalgamation proposal. This means the proposal in its current format has not received the required level of support by our shareholders and therefore amalgamation cannot proceed at this stage
The Scottish Golf Union Board is disappointed with the outcome of the Areas’ vote. The Board believes that the vote is contrary to the wishes of the majority of clubs they represent, which saw 263 affiliated clubs (89.2%) approve the amalgamation proposal from the 295 clubs (51%) that formally responded with their views.
The amalgamation proposal has also been strongly supported by the amateur game’s other key stakeholders, including the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association and its members (Clubs and Counties), major funders sportscotland and other commercial sponsors and partners.
The Scottish Golf Union’s commitment to supporting clubs, together with developing talent and growing the game, remains at the heart of our activities and we will continue to strengthen relationships with clubs to deliver against this strategy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all clubs for their assistance and patience during this lengthy process.
The Scottish Golf Union Board believes that this result is a setback for the future development and governance of Scottish amateur golf. However, the Board takes heart from the fact that all 16 Areas have consistently reaffirmed their support for amalgamation and a commitment to finding a way to achieve amalgamation working with the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association.
The Board will continue to act in the best interests of Scottish golf and will meet on June 6 to consider how we can progress this important matter.

SLGA GIVE AMALGAMATION A BIG YES VOTE - OVER NOW TO SGU

Scottish Ladies Golf Association members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed amalgamation with the Scottish Golf Union at an extraordinary general meeting, held in the lecture theatre of the A K Bell Library, York Place in Perth today.
Now the pressure is on the Scottish Golf Union to get a "yes" vote at its deciding meeting tomorrow night.
If 12 of the 16 SGU areas vote in favour of the amalgamation, then it will go through automatically and Scottish Golf Limited – one governing body for Scottish male and female amateur golf - will become operational from October 1.
The day-to-day operations of the SGU and SLGA will continue independently until then while the new company is being set up with the selection of the Board for Scottish Golf Limited and the preparation of a final combined budget.
Dr Sheila Hartley, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the SLGA company secretary, said after the EGM in Perth:
“The proposal was carried by a significant majority, with 93.03% of votes cast being in favour of its adoption. The amateur game’s key stakeholders, in particular major funders sportscotland and other commercial sponsors and partners, have also strongly supported the proposal.
"The SGU’s Extraordinary Meeting is to be held tomorrow night, and the amalgamation will proceed if the Areas cast 12 of their 16 votes in favour.”
Shona Malcolm, pictured left, the SLGA chairman, said at the conclusion of the meeting:
“The SLGA Board is delighted with the outcome of the members’ vote and would like to take the opportunity to thank all of those who participated during the lengthy and extensive consultation process. Throughout the process the SLGA members have demonstrated a commitment to the future development and governance of Scottish amateur golf, with no thought of self interest.
“The SLGA is committed to progressing the amalgamation to its conclusion, while protecting the democratic principles of the clubs, the main funders of Scottish amateur golf, being the voting members.”
The SLGA was formed in 1904 and has its headquarters in Perth. The SGU came into being in 1920 and its present HQ is at The Duke’s Course, St Andrews. The leases on both current properties have a few years to run, but that would give the new Board time to identify the most appropriate permanent location for the amalgamated body in due course.
Although the amalgamation process in the SLGA has gone through months of discussion quite smoothly, the same cannot be said of the SGU. The major sticking point is that the present men’s area committees will have no role to play in the new controlling body for Scottish amateur golf.

EAST GIRLS WIN MHAIRI McKAY TROPHY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2007
East of Scotland girls beat their West of Scotland counterparts in the annual Mhairi McKay Trophy match at Bothwell Castle. A very strong East team won by 7 1/2-1/2 - their first win in the series since 2007.

The Anne Kerr Mixed Foursomes Trophy - Largs Golf Club

The Largs Mixed Foursomes was held today in rather windy conditions with the odd heavy shower. The local partnership of Doreen McConnell and Fraser Innes retained the Anne Kerr Trophy Trophy with an 81 net 72.5.
The Kerr Trophy was originally presented by Davie Kerr of Largs and later renamed the Anne Kerr Trophy after his late wife who was a great friend of Doreen's.
