Brilliant Beveridge crowned 2019 Scottish Women’s Amateur Champion.

Kimberley Beveridge from Aboyne Golf Club worked hard in gusting winds to come out on top against Chloe Goadby in a thrilling Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship Final.
Down by one hole at the half-way point in Sunday’s Final, Beveridge battled back to birdie the first three holes on the back nine to take her first lead of the match at the 12thhole. A par on 13 was enough to give Beveridge a two-hole lead with five to play.
Still 2 up with three holes to play, Beveridge looked in control of the match, however Chloe Goadby refused to back down as she birdied holes 16 and 17 to tie the match with one to play.
With little splitting the two players all day, it was Beveridge’s sensational approach shot on 18 that would separate the pair as her 8-iron from 131 yards stopped just short of the hole to set up the winning putt.

Speaking to Scottish Golf (video above) after winning on the last, Beveridge said, “I struck that last shot really good actually, it landed probably about 20-feet and rolled down nicely to the hole. The nerves kicked in for that two-foot putt, but I just went for the stroke and it went in.”
On being crowned Scottish Women’s Amateur Champion, Beveridge said, “Hearing that sounds really good, I am absolutely buzzing. I didn’t expect it to be honest, I just plodded along and played my own game and came away with the result.”
Beveridge had earlier beaten Tara Mactaggart of Minto Golf Club with a 2&1 Semi Final victory while runner up Goadby reached the Final with a 3&2 victory against Louise Duncan.
The Clark Rosebowl Matchplay brought yet more success for Aberdeenshire golf with Banchory’s Megan Robb seeing off Nairn’s Carinne Taylor by two holes.
Speaking to Scottish Golf, Robb said, “It was difficult today, the conditions are tough and Carinne is a good player. It could have gone either way, going down the last I was nervous, and my hands were shaking. With being 1 up, I just said to myself don’t do anything dumb. I was able to put it on the green and hole my putt which was nice.”
With two players from Aboyne also representing GB & Ireland at the Vagliano Trophies this week, the newly crowned Scottish Women’s Amateur Champion believes women’s golf in the region is in a good place, adding, “It is really strong at the moment and it is good to see some younger girls coming in to the game which is what we need, it is really good.”

🚨 HOLE IN ONE 🚨

The Continent of Europe showed their strength to claim a 14.5-9.5 win over Great Britain and Ireland and lift the Vagliano Trophy at Royal St George’s.
In securing a seventh straight victory over the sun-drenched links in Kent, the Continent of Europe maintained their dominance in the biennial contest to the delight of captain Anna Roscio.
With a 7–5 lead overnight, the Continent of Europe stretched their lead to three points after going unbeaten in the foursomes to win the session 2.5–1.5.
It was an exciting morning which included a hole-in-one from both Hazel MacGarvie from Scotland and Italy’s Alessia Nobilio.

McWilliam and MacGarvie shine on Day 1 of the Vagliano Trophy

The Continent of Europe claimed a slender 7-5 lead over Great Britain and Ireland after day one of The Vagliano Trophy at Royal St George’s.
Chasing a seventh straight win in the biennial contest, the visitors secured a 3-1 lead after the morning foursomes matches over the renowned Kent links.
In the blustery and warm conditions, Great Britain and Ireland quickly sparked an afternoon fightback with an impressive 7&6 singles victory for Scotland’s Hazel MacGarvie against Girls Amateur champion Emma Spitz.
However, the Continent of Europe managed to half the session 4-4 and go into tomorrow’s final day with the two-point lead as they seek to retain the trophy they last won in Italy in 2017.

At the venue for next year’s 149th Open, there were convincing singles victories for the Continent of Europe pair Leonie Harm and Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, defeating Isobel Wardle and Shannon McWilliam in respective 6&5 triumphs.
Great Britain and Ireland, who last lifted The Vagliano Trophy in 2005, fought back as Alice Hewson defeated Alessia Nobilio 3&1. Ireland’s Julie McCarthy then secured a notable 3&1 success against the top-ranked player in the match, Swede Frida Kinhult, who sits 3rdon the World Amateur Golf Ranking™.

Scots shine
The Scottish duo McWilliam and MacGarvie refused to be denied in the bottom match, putting the first point on the board for the home side with a one-hole win over Valenzuela and Roussin-Bouchard.
In the Junior Vagliano Trophy, the Under-16’s version of the competition, Great Britain and Ireland hold a 5-4 lead – helped by two wins from Ireland’s Beth Coulter.
After the Continent of Europe won the foursomes 2-1 in the six-a-side match, the hosts hit back in the singles, with victories from Coulter, Hannah Darling and Darcey Harry.

Entry is free of charge at Royal St George’s while live scoring, news and video can be followed on The R&A’s website and social media platforms.

JESS MEEK LEADS THE QUALIFIERS AT THE WOMENS SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Carnoustie’s Jessica Meek set the early pace at Kilmarnock Barassie on Friday as play got underway in the 2019 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship.
Meek, a former student at the University of Missouri, entered this week’s competition as the highest ranked player with a handicap of +4.9 and quickly made her mark on the field opening with a six-under par round of 69.
There was no letting up from Meek in the afternoon as she went on to go one better with a second-round score of 68 to take the top spot in tomorrow’s matchplay.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after a scorching day on the links, Meek said, “The course is in great condition and it was nice to have a little bit of a breeze today but other than that it was super toasty. I like playing in this weather, I would prefer to play in this than our usual Scottish weather.”
Qualifying as the top seed for tomorrow’s matchplay, Meek admitted she is looking forward to the challenge, adding, “Matchplay is a little bit different, so you just have to keep playing your own game. At the end of the day, I am just looking to have some really good matches out there. Hopefully it is good golf from everybody, and we will see how it pans out for me.”
Meek’s playing partner Chloe Goadby battled back from an opening round of 78 to go ten shots better in round two. The St Regulus member carded a bogey-free second-round of 68 to secure her place in the weekend’s matchplay.
Summarising her opening day, Goadby said, “This morning I just got into a bit of trouble off the tee, had a couple of penalty shots and dropped shots. In the afternoon, I chose to be a bit clearer and committed with my shots and it paid off so we will try and continue that into the rest of the weekend.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, Goadby added, “This course is an interesting one, I think on holes nine and ten you can be a bit more aggressive and be rewarded with it, whereas today you had to play a bit more conservatively. The wind can change things massively here so depending on that tomorrow, we will assess the strategy and see how aggressive we want to be.”
Defending Champion Gemma Batty missed out on a place in the top 16 but was able to secure a place in the Clark Rosebowl matchplay which will also take place over the weekend.

Women and Girls Fund by Scottish Golf

Douglas Park Golf Club -- 18th Hole

As part of the Scottish Government’s new Women and Girls Fund, Scottish Golf is one of fifteen organisations to benefit from £300,000 investment.

Aimed at getting more women and girls in Scotland taking part in sport, the fund will target women and girls who have previously had little or no access to physical activity for a wide variety of reasons. Scottish Golf have received £15,360 from the fund and will use this to set up new Women and Girls Golf Hubs to compliment the national governing body’s existing Get into Golf offering, with four Regional Hubs offering entry level coaching in a fun and inclusive environment across the country.

Carol Harvey, Women and Young People Development Manager at Scottish Golf, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Scottish Golf is delighted to have received new investment to support the organisation in its aims of encouraging more women and girls to get involved with the game. “In an exciting year for women’s golf in Scotland, with The 2019 Solheim Cup being staged at Gleneagles in September, the support from the Scottish Government’s Women and Girls Fund will allow us to deliver four new Women and Girls’ Golf Hubs across the country, aimed at introducing over 400 new women and girls into the game. “The Hubs will run for 39-weeks during term-time with PGA Professionals delivering entry-level coaching in a friendly environment for beginners.”

Sports Minister, Joe FitzPatrick MSP, congratulated the projects that have been successful in their applications. He said: “There are so many benefits to making sport and physical activity a part of daily life. From improving physical and mental health, to developing skills and strengthening communities, the impact can be life-changing and that’s why we want as many people as possible to enjoy those benefits. “It is encouraging to see that participation in sport and physical activity by women and girls in Scotland is increasing, but some still face barriers to taking part. “The projects who will be supported through the £300,000 Women and Girls fund have shown great insight and innovation in understanding those barriers and taking steps to address them. I look forward to seeing the impact that they have.”

Further details on Scottish Golf’s new Women and Girls’ Golf Hubs, including venues, dates and registration, will be communicated in due course.

East Vets retain the Elise Duncan Trophy against the West Vets

Captain Chris Fowler presents East Captain Anne Rorrison
with the Elise Duncan Trophy

The West Vets Team turned up at Glencorse Golf Club hoping for a win for the first time since 2014.
It was much closer than last year, unfortunately we lost 5 ½ -  3 ½
However 5 games were very well contested, going all the way to the 18th.

Both teams thoroughly enjoyed Glencorse, finding it a tricky and interesting course. It was in great condition considering the weather the day before.
As usual the friendship was evident on the course and in the clubhouse during the meal, and we must thank Glencorse G.C. and East Vets Captain Anne Rorrison for hosting such an enjoyable day.
