RENFREWSHIRE AND D&A ARE WINNERS ON DAY 1 OF THE WEST OF SCOTLAND JAMBOREE

In a completely different format than normal - 8 singles with no foursomes, no caddies and social distancing - day one of this year’s Jamboree saw Dunbartonshire & Argyll play Lanarkshire in the first flight.

The first point on the board was by Lorna McClymont (D&A) with a birdie laiden round against Susan Woodhouse (Lanarkshire).  Megan Docherty (Lanarkshire) replied with a good win over Fiona Rattray (D&A).  Laura McGeachy (D&A) was a worthy winner against Susan Wood (Lanarkshire).  Matches 4 and 5 both reached the 18th hole with Lorraine Campbell (D&A) edging out youngster Katie Graham (Lanarkshire) by 1 hole, while Lori McDonald (D&A) had a half match with Katie Scott (Lanarkshire).  Eva O’Connor (Lanarkshire) had a healthy 4-up lead at the turn against Maggie Kinvig (D&A) and victory came at the 16th hole.  Caroline King (D&A) sealed the crucial winning point with a birdie on the 17th hole against West of Scotland Veterans Champion, Lesley Lloyd (Lanarkshire).  Kirsten Brown (Lanarkshire) was the victor by 1 hole in a closely fought match with Aileen Baker (D&A).

The second flight was between Ayrshire and Renfrewshire with Alyson McGinnigle (Renfrewshire) winning the first point against Rachel Foster (Ayrshire).  Freya Russell (Ayrshire) levelled the scoring with a close win over Julie Wilson (Renfrewshire).  Beth Paterson (Renfrewshire), representing her county for the first time, secured a win over Emma Hale-Ritchie (Ayrshire) with Emma Thomson-Burns (Renfrewshire), another newbie, losing on the 18th to Luisa Gibson (Ayrshire).  Jennifer Rankine (Renfrewshire) came from behind to beat Audrey Thompson (Ayrshire) as did Carol Whyte (Renfrewshire) winning against Pauline Patrick (Ayrshire).  Liz Stewart (Renfrewshire) and Vice-Captain Donna Jackson (Renfrewshire) both won their matches against Jenny Linklater (Ayrshire) and Catherine Garrett (Ayrshire) respectively.

LOUISE DUNCAN IS CROWNED THE 2021 BRITISH WOMENS AMATEUR CHAMPION

West Kilbride’s Louise Duncan wrote her name in the record books as she won the R&A Women’s Championship final by the biggest margin in the event’s 128-year history. 

The 21-year-old Stirling University scholar crushed Iceland’s Johanna Lea Ludviksdottir 9&8 in the 36-hole title decider at Kilmarnock (Barassie) to become the first Scot since Alison Rose in 1997 to claim the coveted title. 

The success has secured spots for Duncan, who is coached by Iain Darroch at West Kilbride, in this year’s AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie and Evian Championship in France, as well as next year’s Augusta National Women’s Amateur and US Women’s Open.

She will be the first Scot to compete in the Augusta National event, which was held for the first time in 2019.

Scotland’s Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) and Jóhanna Lea Lúđvíksdóttir of Iceland will go head-to-head tomorrow in the 36-hole Final of The 118th Women’s Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie).

Duncan, who lives locally in North Ayrshire, progressed to tomorrow’s showpiece by winning a tough match which went to the 19th hole against fellow Scot Hannah Darling having defeated Jessica Baker in the quarter-final by one hole.

PERTH & KINROSS COUNTY TEAM FOR THE JAMBOREE

This year's North Division Jamboree is being held at Monifieth Golf Links (Medal Course), from Saturday 12 June to Monday 14 June 2021.

The 2021 Perth & Kinross Ladies' County Team will be defending the North Division championship title that Perth & Kinross won at Ballater Golf Club in 2019. They will be up against fierce competition from the other three North Division teams: Aberdeenshire, Angus and Northern Counties.

 

The winning team will go on to represent the North Division in the Scottish County Finals at Forres, from 27 - 29 August 2021.

West of Scotland's Louise Duncan reaches the Quarterfinals of the Women's British Championship

Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) and Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) have all qualified for the quarterfinals tomorrow at Kilmarnock Barassie in the Women’s British Amateur Championship 

Hannah Darling won in the morning against Rachael Foster ( Prestwick St Nicholas) by 1 hole and then had to go to the 22nd Hole this afternoon with a wonderful finish.   One  down after 17 she birdie the 18th to go to sudden death - Both had birdies at the 19th and par’d the 20th and 21st. Hannah then birdied the 21st Hole to progress to the quarterfinals  

West Kilbride’s Louise Duncan  had an easier day defeating Sara Byrne 6&4 this afternoon after finishing her morning match against Lottie Woad on the 16th hole in a 3&2 win.

Tomorrow she has set up a match with Jessica Baker who earned her place in the Quarter Final by winning the final three holes of her tie against Emma Allen for a 2 hole victory.

The Renfrewshire's Team of Orla Rooney (Cowglen), Jennifer Lynagh (Caldwell), Aaliyah Sanhu (Haggs), Rosie Maguire (Pollok), Katie Dunn (Paisley) & Sophia Docherty (Ralston) represented Renfrewshire. 

Morning Foursomes saw 1 win from Rosie & Aaliyah.

Singles saw wins from Jennifer, Rosie & Katie giving Renfrewshire a 4 points total. 

This matched Ayrshire & during these strange times, it was decided that a draw was the best result. 

Renfrewshire have a very strong squad of girls with handicaps at the moment whereas other counties were struggling for teams of 6.

Ava  (Elderslie), Melissa (Ralston), Lucie, Amelia,  Ruby & Mia. (All Kilmacolm) all helped by playing for D&A & Lanarkshire. This gave the girls a great experience which will help them all in the future. 

A massive thanks to Clair Barclay for organising the team & to Sandra, Donna & Pearl for supporting the girls on the day. Thanks also to the parents for transporting them to Irvine Bogside & cheering them on during the day.

BRITISH LADIES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS TODAY AT KILMARNOCK BARASSIE

Scotland’s Hannah Darling leads the field at The 118th Women’s Amateur Championship after the first round of qualifying at Kilmarnock Barassie today

Darling recorded an opening round of five-under-par 68 at Kilmarnock (Barassie) to lead by three shots from 2019 Women’s Amateur Champion Emily Toy of England. 

England’s Lottie Woad, Amy Taylor and Ellie Gower as well as Hulda Clara Gestsdóttir of Iceland recorded rounds of one-under-par 72 to be tied third with a group of five players recording even-par rounds.  

The top 64 players after two rounds of qualifying will advance to the match play stage of the Championship.

EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

 The first mixed staging of the East of Scotland Open Championship is to take place next month - a year later than originally planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 48th edition of the tournament on 26-27 June at Lundin will feature men and women playing for the same prize, won in the past by some famous names in Scottish golf, including George Macgregor, Sandy Stephen and Richie Ramsay.

The change, which has the support of the R&A and Scottish Golf, comes just over six years after Lundin, founded in 1868, became a mixed membership club.

“It is an exciting change,” said David Moir, a long-serving East of Scotland Open committee member and past president of the Scottish Golf Union. 

“We’ve actually been thinking about this for a while as we have club competitions among members that are mixed events, which is great.

“The organising committee remains very passionate about the East of Scotland Amateur Stroke Play Championship and we are delighted to be incorporating women into the event for the first time.”

A maximum of 18 women will feature in a 72-strong field on the Fife coast this summer in a move that mirrors the Berkhamsted Trophy in England being opened up to women for the first time. 

In the professional game, a mixed event is being hosted by Henrik Stenson and Annika Sorenstam in June.

The East of Scotland Open Championship committee is working on a flexible teeing system with the R&A and Scottish Golf which will ensure that both sexes compete on an equal footing.

Ramsay, the winner in 2004, has welcomed the change, saying: “It is good that they are trying new ways to open up this event. 

“Being proactive like this is essential for the future of many events. It’s a lovely course and the design lends itself to this format.”

With World Amateur Golf Ranking points on offer, the Lundin event will be open to players with handicap of 0.4 or better. While competing for the main prize, the Denholm Trophy, women competitors will also be playing for a separate piece of silverware.

If no women qualify for the final 36 holes, the leading four after two rounds will progress to the Sunday to compete for that trophy as opposed to it being awarded to the top woman following Saturday’s play.

Clare Queen, performance director at Scottish Golf, said: “We are always looking at ways we can strengthen the female game in Scotland. The opportunity to compete on a great course like Lundin in a high-quality field is a great one for females who compete in Scotland, especially during the quieter summer months.

“I believe that the increased level of competition could help to raise the bar for female golf in Scotland and give those players with ambitions of competing internationally or at professional level the perfect chance to develop their games.

“This type of event is becoming more popular on the professional tours, so it’s been great to see that Lundin have been so forward thinking and we are excited to see how the event develops.”

No doubt due to the revised dates of the Helen Holm, Clare Queen has intimated that we will probably get a lower entry from women than expected which is a great shame.

CHLOE GOADBY WINS THE 2021 SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Chloe Goadby gave a huge thumbs up to former British Women’s Open Champion Catriona Matthew after beating Tara Mactaggart 4 & 3 in the final of the Scottish Women’s Match Play Championship at Gullane

Goadby had played a couple of practice rounds at Gullane with Honorary member Matthew in the lead up to the championship and she admitted the advice she received helped her to beat great friend and rival and claim her women’s national match play title for the first time.

Goadby began the championship by finishing 14th behind Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) in the 36-hole stroke play and was taken to the fifth extra hole in her first round match against Penelope Brown (Auchterarder) before starting to find the sort of form that saw her earn a place in GB & I’s provisional Curtis Cup squad late last year.

She claimed a one hole victory over Rachel Foster (Prestwick St Nicholas) in the second round and then beat St Rule Trophy winner Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) 5 & 4 in the semi-final before maintaining her momentum with a fast start Mactaggart in the final.

Goadby began the final by winning the second and third holes. The reigning Lothians champion from Minto briefly got back to all square with wins on the fourth and the eighth but Goadby raced into a three hole lead by winning the ninth, 10th and 11th before sealing her success with another win on the 466-yard par five 15th hole.

The final of the second flight Clark Rosebowl competition turned about to be an all Blairgowrie Golf Club affair with both Katy Alexander and Megan Ashley winning their semi-final matches against Megan Docherty (Bishopbriggs) and Isla McDonald-O’Brien (Shrewsbury) respectively.

In the final Ashley was one up at the turn before Alexander pulled away to win 3&2.

Hannah Darling keeps her hopes of claiming her first national title

Hannah Darling’s hopes of claiming her first national women’s title remain very much alive after reaching the semi-finals of the 2021 Scottish Women’s Match Play Championship at Gullane.

Just six days after victory in the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews the 17-year-old Broomieknowe and Gullane member beat Ellen Caton (St Regulus) 5 & 4 in the first round and followed that up with a 4 & 3 victory over fellow GB & I Curtis Cup squad member Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) in the afternoon.

Darling will now face 2019 runner-up Chloe Goadby in the semi-finals after the St Regulus player beat Rachel Foster (Prestwick St Nicholas) by one hole in their quarter final match. Earlier in the day she had needed to go all the way to the 23rd hole before getting the better of Auchterarder’s Penelope Brown so not unnaturally she was feeling a few aches and pains after her two games.

In the other half of the draw, 2015 champion East Lothian champion Tara Mactaggart (Minto) will face 2015 Scottish Women’s champion Clara Young (North Berwick) in the last four.  

Mactaggart (Minto) reached the semi-final of the 2019 championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and now has a chance of going one better after a two year interlude caused by Covid-19. She beat Aboyne’s Carmen Griffiths by one hole in a tight match in the morning and then dispatched Luisa Gibson by 4 & 3 in the afternoon.

In the second flight competition for the Clark Rosebowl there is a chance that two Blairgowrie players will contest the final. Megan Ashley beat East Kilbride’s Susan Woodhouse 2 & 1 in their quarter final and will now come up against Isla McDonald-Obrien (Shrewsbury). Meanwhile Ashley’s Blairgowrie club-mate Katy Alexander will play Bishopbriggs’ Megan Docherty in the semi-finals after a 19th hole victory over Royal Troon’s Freya Russell.

Louise Duncan from West Kilbride carded a superb second round 65 to top the leaderboard at the end of the 36-hole qualifier for the 2021 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Gullane.

 

Louise reached the semi-finals the last time the championship was played in 2019 and now she has the chance to go even further following an exceptional performance capped by a stunning eagle on her final hole.

The Scottish internationalist carded a one under par first round of 73 on Gullane’s No. 1 course before firing two eagles and four birdies in a bogey-free round on the host club’s No. 2 course to set a pace none of the other competitors could match. 

Duncan’s nine under par 138 aggregate saw her top the list of 16 qualifiers a single shot ahead of fellow international Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), Penelope Brown (Auchterarder) and first round leader Luisa Gibson (Irvine) while Rachel Foster (Prestwick St Nicholas) and Tara Mactaggart (Minto), another of the semi-finalists in 2019, also comfortably made it into the draw for the match play stage on seven under par 140. 

Ellen Caton (St Regulus Ladies) and Lorna McClymont (Milngavie) also made the weekend with a minimum of fuss in a share of seventh place on 141, as did Jennifer Saxton (Dunfermline) who was alone in ninth place on 142, but it was a different story for Broomieknowe and Gullane member, Hannah Darling, who came into the championship as favourite following her win on Sunday at the St Rule Trophy but needed all her resolve to make it through after carding a morning round of 74 on No. 1.

In the end the teenaged GB & I Curtis Cup squad member showed why she is regarded as one of Scotland’s brightest prospects by carding six birdies in a battling four under par 69 which saw her climb up into a share of tenth place alongside Carmen Griffiths (Aboyne) and Hazel MacGarvie (Royal Troon) on four under par 143.

Chloe Goadby (St Regulus Ladies) reached the final two years ago at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and now has the chance to go one better after posting rounds of 72 and 73 to share 13th place with club-mate Gillian Paton and Katie Wright (Stranraer) on two under par 145.

It is the same for 2015 champion Clara Young (North Berwick) who posted rounds of 75 and 71 but then faced an anxious wait before claiming the sixteenth and last spot following a card countback on 146.

Carinne Taylor (Nairn) and Megan Ashley (Blairgowrie) were the unfortunate players to miss out on countback but they had the consolation of qualfying for the second flite competition involving those players finishing in 17th to 36th place in the stroke play.

The match play starts today (Saturday) and ends with the two finals on Sunday afternoon.

All scores from the 2021 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship will be registered by players on the course using the Scottish Golf App. This means that live scores from Gullane will be available for everyone to follow on the Scottish Golf Website.

Scottish Golf introduce Golf Open Play for Non- Member Golfers

At the 2018 Scottish Golf Conference, Scottish Golf announced their intention to launch an integrated software platform for golf clubs that would create inclusivity and a pathway into membership for all golfers. The principal aims and objectives of their strategy were: 

• To make golf Scotland’s Game for Everyone, ensuring the game is an inclusive and accessible sport for all 
   
• To finance the game in Scotland with the introduction of new revenue streams to reduce the reliance on external funding and member contributions and ensure that all who consume golf in Scotland make a financial contribution 
   
• To invest in technology to support member clubs in a way which allows them to embrace modern society through digital means 

Since that time they have been researching, developing and testing their approach and are now in a position to provide you with details of their new subscription service OpenPlay which launched today.  

OpenPlay is their independent golfer programme, where they have created a monthly digital subscription model for non-member golfers to obtain an official handicap in a way that their extensive research shows will more closely meet their needs and lifestyle. 

As you can hear from Martin Gilbert, Chair of Scottish Golf, Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A and Open Champions Paul Lawrie and Catriona Matthew, they all strongly believe that OpenPlay will reach out to the estimated 500,000 golfers in Scotland, who are not members of a club, to create inclusivity and a pathway into membership

Rosemary Ogilvie has a Hole in One at Ranfurly Castle

 

Very many congratulations go to Rosemary Ogilvie who had a Hole in One at the 7th hole at Ranfurly Castle on Wednesday 2nd June.

Susan Penman (East Vets Captain) and her team met the West Vets Team at  Douglas Park Golf Club  on Tuesday 1st June.

With Covid restrictions in operation in Glasgow - Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire - who lives in Glasgow ) had to withdraw and Donna Jackson (The Ladies Golf Club Troon) suddenly had to withdraw that morning due to work commitments.

Also West Vets Captain Chris Fowler came out to support but unfortunately could not go into the clubhouse due to living in Glasgow. Vice Captain May Hughes who played was able to present the winning Trophy 

However, the match went ahead and was enjoyed by all on a lovely day

Lanarkshire's Susan Woodhouse and Taylor White win the Inter County Foursomes Finals

The final of the inter  County Foursomes was played at East Kilbride Golf Club yesterday with the competitors enjoying the warm sunny weather and  a course that was in excellent condition.

The Lanarkshire pairing of Susan Woodhouse and Taylor White were the winners with a level par 73

Renfrewshire's Mother and Daughter partnerships Jan and Alison Macnab were runners up with a 79 

Lanarkshire also look the top award in the handicap section with Sarah Parker and Helen Wilson taking the top award with a net 67.5
