NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Bothwell Castle’s Pamela Pretswell, the Women’s British Open Strokeplay Champion, and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Champion, aim to start the new season in style at the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship at Troon from Friday to Sunday this coming weekend (April 22-24).
Pretswell is one of four backmarkers boasting a plus four handicap, and the 2010 Curtis Cup player is looking forward to the challenge.
“I have been busy at Glasgow University completing my Business and Management degree,” explained the 21-year-old, who hopes to graduate with honours this summer. “But I have also managed to spend some time in Portugal preparing for the season.”
“I’ve got a hectic golf schedule this summer and have made some slight changes to my swing and my putting over the winter so it will be good to test them out at the Helen Holm.”MacDonald had a terrific 2010 season. In addition to winning her first Scottish Amateur title, the 20-year-old also reached the final of the British Amateur, retained the Scottish Open Under-21 Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship and topped the 2010 Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association Order of Merit.
The Irish Maguire twins – Leona, who won the title in 2009, and Lisa – plus England’s Emma Brown are the other players with plus four handicaps in a field that has attracted entries from 11 countries.
Danielle McVeigh made it back-to-back wins for Ireland when she claimed the title last year, and she will be back to defend the crown. Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) was the best of the Scots in joint third place.
The 54-hole Championship takes place over three days. Following 18 holes over Troon Portland on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April, the top 66 players and ties will qualify for the final round over Royal Troon on Sunday 24th April.

A certain Past County Captain, Past Douglas Park Captain and Champion, Past Bearsden Captain and Champion, Past Champion of Elie and now is it Captain of the Seniors?
I’m unsure of the correct title, but Mrs. Helen Faulds (pictured left)suffered a somewhat “senior moment” this afternoon at Windyhill.
Roll back the hours and she acted as Caddy to Anna Telfer this morning – due to sore knee and perhaps tiredness she was replaced this afternoon as caddy to Anna! However, after lunch Mrs.Faulds prepared to go out onto the course to spectate along with some other members.
Somewhere along the line her “handbag” went missing! PANIC – BIG TIME! This inspite of her being insistent that she left it on the bench in the ladies locker room! First suspect [was it lifted in error by someone] – a certain finalist from the Bronze Championship, but on approaching her and returning to the Clubhouse to search and check, this lady, Anne Nicoll [Ranfurly Castle member], was completely innocent! What about the handbag lockers? No didn’t use one was the reply from Mrs. Faulds! However, Member Christine Kelly managed to obtain the “master” handbag locker keys and on opening No. 11 there was THE BAG! On further searching Mrs. Faulds came across the key to No. 10 Locker – in her pocket! How confusing!
I think the story could end now – an embarrassed Past Captain and everything and a very good laugh had by many.
Thanks go to D&A Vice Captain Alisoun Fairbairn for all the news

An excellent AGM was run by the LGU with Gillian Kirkwood (Chairman) , Jane Brown (Finance Director) and Shona Malcom (CEO) all giving their reports.
Mrs Jill Edwards MBE was appointed as the new President from the retiring President Maureen Lockett.
Janet Wake leaves the Council and Board and Lorna Bennett takes over the vacancy.
At the close of the meeting Alison Nicholas, Captain of the 2011 GB&I Solheim Cup team gave a fantastic insight into the problems tears and joys of being a Captain. The audience all enjoyed her humour and there was much laughter.

Tegwen Mathews and Alison Nicholas attend the LGU Dinner
Lanarkshire, D&A and Renfrewshire with Alison Nicholas - Click too enlarge |
The LGU dinner was held last night Friday 25th February at the Holiday Inn in West Nile Street Glasgow. Aileen Wilson, Beth Paterson, Fiona Roger, Carol Fell and Jennifer Mack were all there.
Guests at the dinner were Tegwen Matthews who has been appointed as the captain of Great Britain and Ireland's 2012 Curtis Cup team and Alison Nicholas who won the 1987 Weetabix Ladies British Open at St Mellion.
The highlight of Alison's career was when she was crowned 1997 US Open Champion when she held off golfing legend Nancy Lopez to win her first major. Following this success Alison was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to women's golf.
Representing Europe in the Solheim Cup six times was memorable for Alison especially being on three victorious teams in 1992, 2000 and as Vice Captain in 2003.
She was the Solheim Cup European Team Captain for 2009 and is the Team Captain for 2011 European Solheim Cup with Ladies European Tour members Annika Sorenstam and Joanne Morley who have been selected as her vice-captains. This years Solheim Cup is to be played in Ireland at Killeen Castle.
