EILIDH FROM KILMACOLM MAKES IT THRO' TO THE MATCH PLAY STAGES OF THE BRITISH GIRLS

Eilidh Briggs - Click to enlarge

West of Scotland player from Kilmacolm -- Eilidh Briggs (pictured above- Courtesy of Colin Farquharson - Click to enlarge) ) – qualified for the match-play stages after the two stroke-play eliminating rounds finished in wind and rain at West Lancashire Golf Club this evening.
Both Comrie's Carly Booth aged 17, and 16-year-old Elidh had totals of six-over-par 150, made up of two 75s each.
They qualified with ease quite high up among the 64 who made it through with totals of 158 or better.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) missed out with scores of 80 and 79 for 159, and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) bowed out on 168 with rounds of 82 and 86.
Borders women’s champion Lesley Atkins (Minto), who is enduring that loss of form which all young improving players go through at some time or other, had scores of 83 and 89 for 172.
Eilidh Briggs clinched her place with two late birdies, at the 14th and 16th in an inward 37 for 75 while Carly covered the last 13 holes with 12 pars and one bogey … the kind of form that wins match-play ties.
Rachael Watton had a nightmare 9 at the par-4 10th and had an inward half of 46.
Leading qualifier was the 15-year-old Spanish girl, Noemi Jimenez from Malaga, with rounds of 70 and 73 for 143.

A Golf Poem

In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, And Rather Small.
Oh How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess,
Or The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.
My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.
It Has Made Me Curse And Cry,
And Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises A Thing Called Par,
Even If I Can Hit It Straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.
It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Even Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.
With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.
It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball Knows ... I'll Be Back Tomorrow.
Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls....

A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud. Almost feel like a hybrid.

Scotland are Runners - Up in the Home Internationals

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland regained their pride and their fighting spirit to finish runners-up to Stroyan Cup winners England on the last day of the girls’ home international golf matches at sunny Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.
The Scots came from 2pt in arrears to snatch a 4 ½-4 ½ draw with Wales and so win the Swansea Spoon for finishing second.
"I'm thrilled to bits with the way Scotland played. England were the only team to beat us and we all agree they are different class this year," said Scotland captain Margaret MacNaughtan. "As we did against Ireland on the first day, we rallied from what could have been a losing position in the singles. Great stuff. I've enjoyed every minute of being here in Lancashire with the girls."
Kevin Craggs, the SLGA coach said," It was a good all-round performance. You have to remember most of the Scotland girls were new to international golf and it was a young team."
England were given their toughest match of the series by Ireland before beating them 6 ½-2 ½. LISA AND ALEXANDRA THE MVPs
The “Most Valuable Players” of the week were Ireland’s 14-year-old Lisa Maguire and England’s Alexandra Peters. Both won five times and lost one in their six outings.
Scotland’s top points achievers were Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), both with 4pt out of six. Ironically, both lost their final ties against Wales.
After the Wales v Scotland foursomes were shared 1 ½-1 ½, Wales claimed victory in the first two singles to finish. Amy Boulden beat Eilidh Briggs by 3 and 1 and Gemma Bradbury beat Rachael Watton 4 and 3.
The Scots’ rally began with a one-hole win by Alyson McKechin over Kelly Miller.
McKechin staged a grandstand finish to win both the 17th and the 18th for a one-hole victory.
Sammy Leslie’s 3 and 1 win for Scotland over Chloe Williams levelled the overall scoreline at 3 ½ pt each.
Katie Bradbury put Wales back in front by beating Rachael Taylor by one hole.
Scotland, trailing by one with one tie to finish, got the levelling point with a 2 and 1 win by their champion from Peebles, Ailsa Bain, over Natasha Gobey. Bain was never behind in a match in which she was three up after nine holes

Scotland Lose to England in the Girls' Home Internationals

Report By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland’s Under-18 girls team have tasted the highs and the lows of golf on consecutive days at the girls' home international matches for the Stroyan Cup at Fairhaven Golf Club.
Quite rightly proud of their come-from-behind 5-4 win over European champions Ireland on Tuesday, the Scots were humbled 8-1 by England today on a very hot day at the Lancashire venue.
England, the defending champions, are currently different class at this age level and when it is eight-a-side – or they certainly have looked it this week. They simply have more good players than any of the other countries.
On Tuesday, they slaughtered Wales 8-1 and 24 hours later they did the same to the Scots team who are no duffers by any means. Several of the Under-18 Scots will graduate to the adult line-up in the not too distant future.
England had to settle for a 2-1 lead from the foursomes when Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) won their alternate shot tie by two holes over Holly Clyburn and Alexandra Peters.
Holly is the new England girls champion and Alexandra is the Fairhaven women's course record holder, having won the Fairhaven Junior Open girls' title for the past two years. So that was a great win by Eilidh and Rachael.
But it was to prove the sole crumb of comfort.
England whitewashed the Scots 6-0 in the singles with defeats for Germany-based Rachael Taylor (3 and 2 by Holly Clyburn), Sammy Leslie (4 and 2 by Kelly Tidy), Rachael Watton, failing to win for the first time in four outings as she went down by 5 and 4 to Nikki Foster, Eilidh Briggs (3 and 2 by Hannah Turland), Alyson McKechin (2 and 1 by Heidi Baek) and Lesley Atkins (5 and 4 by Alexandra Peters).
Ireland came from 4-2 down to beat luckless Wales 5-4 but, even with the brilliance of the 14-year-old Maguire twins giving them a chance of securing three points – one in the foursomes and two in the singles – it is almost impossible to see them beating England in their last match.
Scotland finish by playing Wales – and, judging by the way the Welsh played against the Irish, it could be a close one.
DAY TWO RESULTS

IRELAND 5, WALES 4
Foursomes: Lisa & Leona Maguire lost to Katie Bradbury & Chelsey Herbert 1 hole; Carla Reynolds & Patrice Delaney lost to Amy Boulden & Gemma Bradbury 2 and 1; Laura McCarthy & Emma O’Driscoll bt Chloe Williams & Natasha Gobey 3 and 1 (1-2).
Singles: Leona Maguire bt Gobey 5 and 3, Paula Grant lost to Gemma Bradbury 3 and 2, O’Driscoll bt Herbert 1 hole, Reynolds lost to Katie Bradbury 6 and 5, McCarthy bt Kelly Miller 1 hole, Lisa Maguire bt Boulden 3 and 2 (4-2)

SCOTLAND 1, ENGLAND 8
Foursomes: Ailsa Bain & Sammy Leslie lost to Heidi Baek & Kelly Tidy 3 and 2; Sammy Vass & Rachael Taylor lost to Hannah Turland & Hayley Davis 2 and 1; Eilidh Briggs & Rachael Watton bt Holly Clyburn & Alexandra Peters 2 holes (1-2).
Singles: Taylor lost to Clyburn 3 and 2, Leslie lost to Tidy 4 and 2, Watton lost to Nikki Foster 5 and 4, Eilidh Briggs lost to Turland, Alyson McKechin lost to Baek 2 and 1, Lesley Atkins lost to Peters 5 and 4 (0-6) .

Scotland Girls are inspired by Catriona Matthew

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
“The Catriona Matthew inspiration is working already,” said a cock-a-hoop captain Margaret MacNaughtan after Scotland toppled European champions Ireland on the opening day of the Under-18 gitrls’ home international matches at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today
Very much the underdogs against an Irish team that won the Euro girls team title only four weeks ago and includes two Vagliano Trophy team players in the 14-year-old Maguire twins, Scotland rallied from 3-1 down to win 5-4.
That sets the scene for a Day 2 summit meeting – Scotland versus defending champions England.
The English walloped Wales 8-1 in their opening tie.
“I’ve never seen a Scotland girls team so animated since they went to Royal Lytham to see Catriona winning the Women’s British Open and meeting her afterwards. And I’m quite certain that some of Catriona’s magic rubbed off on our girls,” said Mrs MacNaughtan, who played for Scotland … at hockey.
“To beat Ireland was a simply fantastic performance. I don’t want to single any players out for special mention because I’ve been stressing since we got here that this is a team championship – and everybody has a role to play in the team effort.
“And that was some team effort against Ireland.”
The Scots, 2-1 down from the morning foursomes, saw that deficit stretchto two points when Lisa Maguire produced some brilliant golf to beat Alyson McKechin (Eldereslie) 7 and 6. Lisa was six up at the turn and birdied the first, fourth, sixth and 10th She was roughly four under par for the holes played.
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) started the afternoon ball rolling for Scotland when she put a second team point on the board by beating Sara Helly 4 and 3Helly was one up at the turn but the initiative in what had been a tight match was seized by Briggs who won three holes in a row, the 13th, 14th and 15th , for victory
Rachael Watton put Scotland on level terms at 3-3 overall with a tremendous 2 and 1 win over Leona Maguire. The tone for a quality match was set when the first hole was halved in birdie 4s. Watton took the lead at the second and was never in arrears after that.
Maguire won the third but the Scot then won the fourth, fifth and eighth to take a three-hole lead. Briggs lost the 10th but went back to three up with a birdie 3 at the 12th. In a ding-dong finish Maguire birdied the 15th and 16th to cut her deficit to one but Briggs won the 17th and the match with a par.
Scotland moved into a 4-3 lead when their new champion, Ailsa Bain (Peebles) beat her Irish counterpart Emma O’Driscoll by one hole after being two down at the turn. Bain won the 10th, the 11th with a birdie and then the 12th to lead for the first time.
O’Driscoll squared the contest again at the 14th but Bain’s par 3 at the 17th put her back in the lead and the last hole was halved.
Ireland drew level at 4-4 when Carla Reynolds, who had been three up after three holes, bt Lesley Atkins (Minto) by 3 and 2 after the Scot had cut her deficit to one hole with a birdie at the 11th. Reynolds won the 12th, 13th and 14th to go four up. Atkins won the 15th but a half at the 16th ended the match in Ireland’s favour.
And so everything hinged on the last of the six singles – Sammy Lesie for Scotland and Patrice Delaney for Ireland.
After losing the first hole, Leslie, from Westhill, Aberdeen, won the next four in a row for a three-hole advantage which was cut to one when Delaney won the seventh and eighth.
A birdie by the Scot at the ninth put her two up again and a par at the 13th was good enough to re-establish Leslie’s three-hole lead and a half in bogey 6s at the 15th meant that neither Sammy nor Scotland could be beaten.

Catriona Matthew is the 2009 Womens' British Open Champion

Super mum Catriona Matthew secured a three shot victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club today
She became not only the first ever Scot to win a women’s major championship, but the fourth ever Brit to do so following Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas and Karen Stupples.
Another point of interest -- her aunt Helen Crichton of Ranfurly Castle is absolutely thrilled with her win as is the rest of Scotland

Stewart Cink beats tiring Tom Watson in four-hole play-off for Open title

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE
American Ryder Cup player Stewart Cink is the new Open champion, snatching the title from the hands of compatriot Tom Watson in a four-hole play off after they tied on a two-under-par total of 278 at Turnberry this evening.
Watson, who had turned the clock back all week, ran out of time in his bid to win his sixth Open over the same course where he won his second in 1977. The dream ended in anti-climatic fashion as the 59-year-old five-time champion wearied over the extra holes and destroyed his chances when he took two shots to force himself clear of the thick rough to the left of the 17th fairway. As they walked off that green he trailed 36-year-old Cink by four shots.
The final hole was a formality. Watson blocked his tee shot into the crowd and was in rough short of the green in two. Cink hit two perfect shots to less then three feet and tapped in the winning putt. Watson, sadly, trailed by six shots.
Unfortunately for the talented Cink, who has earned his place in the higher echelons of the game, he was cast in the role of villain.
Playing in his 50th major championship, Cink created his shot at the title with a closing round of 69, making up three shots on Watson over the final 18 holes. He has won five tournaments on the US PGA Tour over the past 12 years and has played in 11 Opens with a previous best of tied for sixth at Carnoustie in 2007.
He took up the game when his parents, both single handicap players, left him at the driving range before he was old enough to go on the course.
“I grew up watching Tom Watson on television and hoped I could one day follow in his footsteps,” said Cink. “I never expected to be playing against him. It has been a surreal experience on one of my favourite courses in this wonderful championship.”
Ross Fisher started his last round birdie-birdie to take the lead but ran up a catastrophic quadruple bogey 8 a few holes later and his chance had gone.
Lee Westwood was in the leading pair on and off after that but dropped crucial shots over the last few holes and he too finished with an anti-climax of three putts on the 18th to fall out of joint second place.
Chris Wood, the Englishman who won the silver medal as leading amateur at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago, did amazingly well as a rookie pro to tie for third place with Westwood on 279.

Banff 5 day Tournament -- Lesley Watson is a winner

Cogratulations go to Lesley Watson of Cambuslang who beat Ros Dunsmuir (Cruden Bay) on the 18th to win the Doune Cup (Scratch Competition) at Duff House Royal in their Banff Open Week.
Agnes Carter of Kirkintilloch won the Low Handicap competition.
Also of note was Vicky Lindsay of Kirkintilloch who has not been in the best of health recently and hadn't played in a competition this year, went out in a buggy and shot a 66 (6 under her handicap), got cut and qualified for the matchplay. Unfortunately she lost in the first round. Not bad though for a Lady in her eighties. She's also entered for next year !
There were 195 entrants taking part in this Golfing Week and I have been informed that Brenda Livingstone (Lamlash) was the oldest qualifier in the Scratch Section!!
Well done to all in the West of Scotland who took part in this excellent golfing week

Scottish Girls Championship Eilidh Briggs is 2nd Qualifier

Rachael Watton, 17-year-old Mortonhall member, earned the top seed status in the match-play stages of the Scottish Girls (close) Amateur Championship with a five-over-par total of 153 in the 36-hole qualifying test at Lanark Golf Club today.
Rachael had rounds of 77 and 76 with playing the last eight holes in two under par to finish three shots clear of Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs (Kilmalcolm),
Eilidh had a roller-coaster first round of 77 which included an eagle 3 at the long 11th and a birdie at the long 14th as well as a double bogey sixth at the fifth. She had nothing better than par in her second round.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who led the 1st round with a one over par 75 did not do so well in the 2nd round but ended up being the 6th best qualifier for the matchplay stages tomorrow.

RACE FOR 2009 JUNIOR MASTERS TITLE STARTS THIS WEEK

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The race for the 2009 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters title, Scotland’s biggest participation junior golf event, gets underway with the first two of this summer’s four regional finals taking place this week.
Sixty four juniors will go west to Glasgow’s Bishopbriggs Golf Club which will tee off this year’s title race, the event then heads north to Boat of Garten with 69 young aspiring golfers hoping to be among those to secure a place in the prestigious grand final, which takes place on the Queen’s Course, Gleneagles, in October.
Qualifying competitions have been taking place up and down the country over the last three months, with the leading two boys and girls from each club making their way through to the regional finals. Following this week’s events, the Junior Masters regional finals moves to Alyth in Perthshire next week (21 July) and the following month to Lothianburn Golf Club, who will host the last qualifier on Wednesday 5 August.
Around 300 youngsters from clubs across the country will be participating in the four events, with the leading 80 players heading for Gleneagles, home of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Among the juniors taking part this year, over 50 competitors are girls, boosted by clubgolf’s ‘Girls in Golf’ programme.
SGU Marketing & Sponsorship Manager Ross Duncan said, “The Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters has been a huge success and we are very grateful to the sponsor’s contribution over the last three years.
“Their support of this event has boosted the grass roots game by promoting and supporting junior golf in communities across Scotland, as well as giving young players the chance to play in a national event at Gleneagles, the Ryder Cup venue for 2014. The calibre of the field at each event has improved year on year and demonstrates much of the hard work going into junior golf and our SGU Academys right now.”
The winner of last year’s Junior Masters girls section was Kirkintilloch’s Jorden Ferrie, whilst Renfrewshire’s Rory McKinnon from Ranfurly Castle won the boys section. Ferrie will be among the field teeing up tomorrow, however McKinnon is unable to take part and is replaced by Scott McAllister, son of two times European Tour winner Stephen McAllister.
This year’s players will need to be on the top of their game to top the Gleneagles leaderboard and take the respective titles at this year’s Grand Final which takes place on 11 October.

Come back to Ayrshire -- The Home of Golf

Come Back to Ayrshire - The Home of Open Golf

Comebacktoayrshire Newsletter

12 July 2009

It's a great year for golfers and anyone with an interest in golf to come back to Ayrshire.

Almost 150 years ago a group of individuals took to the sandhills of Prestwick and made Ayrshire the home of Open Golf. Today, Ayrshire boasts two out of five of The Open venues. This year, the newly refurbished Turnberry resort will play host the The Open, a world class event.

Those visiting The Open this year will have opportunities to find out more about the area including its range of links, public and parkland courses. A special 'Come Back to Ayrshire' stand will provide information on golf, tourism and the range of events taking place in Scotland's Year of Homecoming and beyond.

There will also be opportunities to discover your Scottish roots as specialists from Ayrshire Archives will be on hand to give you an insight into how to trace your family tree and discover more about geneaology.

Golf is of course one of the Homecoming pillars and the last practice day of The Open (Wed 15 July) is a special Homecoming Day.

Scotland's Year of Homecoming celebrates 250 years since the birth of Robert Burns. Burns was born in Burns Cottage, Alloway, Ayrshire, making this a "must visit" destination for all visitors in 2009. The Come Back to Ayrshire team will have lots of information on the Burns attractions in the area as well as annual Ayrshire events including, the Scottish Gold Cup Festival, Ayr Flower Show, The Burns an' a' that Festival and Alloway 1759.

The Homecoming Day will also be a great family day out with opportunities to 'Beat the Pro' at putting, have your photograph taken with The Claret Jug and see some special on screen welcomes from the world of sport.

Another special Homecoming golf related event will take place during the week of The Open and throughout the summer until 31 August 2009. Whole in One is a special golf exhibition that charts the history of Open Golf. This free exhibition takes place at Maclaurin Galleries, Rozelle Estate, Ayr and has something for all of the family to enjoy including golf artefacts and memorabilia, an interactive golf simulator and some nostalgic video clips. On a recent visit to Ayrshire golfing legend Jack Nicklaus said of the exhibition:

''The Whole in One exhibition is all about memories and rekindling the spirit of the past. I would encourage everyone with an interest in sport, their local history or those who are plain curious to have a look at the development of golf in South Ayrshire and to see some of the exhibits on show."
Jack Nicklaus

The Open provides a driving force for golf development in Ayrshire. South Ayrshire Council Leader Hugh Hunter said:

"Golf is a major asset to Ayrshire tourism. Often referred to as Scotland's Golf Coast, Ayrshire is a popular destination for golfers the world over. As well as major golfing events such as The Open, annual golf events are also organised by South Ayrshire Council bringing together locals and visitors to enjoy a sense of competition and camaraderie over a number of our courses in Ayr, Troon and Girvan and teams from Golf South Ayrshire and Junior Golf South Ayrshire (Club golf delivered by South Ayrshire Council within local primary schools) work together to develop the sport's social and recreational benefits amongst the young and young at heart!"

It is fitting that The Open comes back to Ayrshire in Scotland's Year of Homecoming and Turnberry, a luxury collection resort, newly refurbished to the highest standard will once again open its doors to provide the perfect setting. Who can forget the famous 1977 Duel in the Sun between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. This year looks set to be just as good with so many young exciting players emerging to compete with a few returning notable old hands.

Fifteen thousand grandstand seats, more than ever before, will provide not only uninterrupted views of the golf but will also showcase the breathtaking Ailsa Craig and the stunning Ayrshire scenery that surrounds Turnberry lighthouse. People the world over will be glad that The Open has come back to Ayrshire.
