EUROPE WIN THE SOLHEIM CUP IN STYLE

Caroline Hedwall rewrote the history books at Colorado Golf Club when she sank a 4ft putt birdie putt at the final hole to beat Michelle Wie and retain the Solheim Cup for Europe.
The 24-year-old Swede became the first player to win five out five matches – and by winning the 14th point for Europe she sealed the historic first win at an American venue
The final result was 18-10: the biggest ever margin of victory.
“I am still shaking but it is an unbelievable feeling,” said the elated Hedwall, who was also a star of the win when she was a rookie at Killeen Castle in Ireland two years ago. “But I was so pumped and I ready to go.”
Minutes later and a half point from Catriona Matthew against Gerina Piller took the European tally to 14 ½ points and the Cup had been won outright.
After a stunning 4-0 whitewash in Saturday afternoon’s four-balls, Liselotte Neumann’s team needed just 3 ½ points from the 12 singles to retain the Cup and England’s Charley Hull led the way with a huge win over Paula Creamer.
But the outcome remained in the balance as matches swung one way and then another and there was more drama when play was halted for thunder and lightning with Europe leading 13-7 and a tantalising one point from glory.
Before the one hour delay, 17-year-old Hull, the youngest ever Solheim Cup player, had packed five birdies into 14 holes and beaten Creamer, the world No. 11, by 5 and 4.
“I wasn’t too nervous,” said the super talented English teenager who won two out of three points. “It’s always the way I look at golf. I’m not going to die if I hit a bad shot.”
An amusing touch at the end of the match was Hull getting Creamer to sign a ball.
“I’ve got s friend, James, at home, who’s a big fan so I thought I’d ask,”’ explained the teenager who must have won a bundle of new fans over the past three days. “When I asked her she said ‘really’?
Creamer, who lost 6 and 5 to Matthew in the top singles at Killeen Castle, was generous in defeat. “She played great but I just wish I could have given her more of a battle.
“The Solheim Cup seems to bring the best or the worst out in me and I just couldn’t hit a fairway on the front nine.”
Anna Nordqvist added a half point for Europe in the top match against the Ricoh Women’s British Open Champion, Stacy Lewis and then Spanish rookie Carlota Ciganda brought the historic win even closer with a 4 and 2 triumph over Morgan Pressel.
Brittany Lang finally got a full point on the board for the USA with a 2 and 1 victory over Azahara Munoz.
Following the weather delay, Hedwall and Matthew did their stuff and after that everyone was playing for pride.
For Matthew, it was another great Solheim memory. The 43-year-old Scot has played seven times and she gained the winning point at Barseback in 2003.
“I was told coming up the 18th that if I got a half we would win outright so I was kind of shaking,” said the North Berwick mum of two who had parred the short 17th to draw level with Piller.
“I made a great par to win the 17th and then the five footer for the half at the last. Being able to celebrate with 11 team mates, the caddies and other helpers makes it far more exciting and more fun than an individual win.
“Lotta has done a great job. She inspired us and instilled confidence. We don’t need much motivation to go out and play but she got the pairings absolutely right. The key was the rookies, and the 4-0 four-balls victory on Saturday afternoon.”
With the match over as a contest, Suzann Pettersen, Giulia Sergas and Karine Icher all had halved matches and Jodi Ewart-Shadoff beat Brittany Lincicome before Beatriz Recari took her point against Angela Stanford.
Caroline Masson lost, but it didn’t really matter. Europe won the singles 7 ½ - 4 ½.
Hedwall was Europe’s top points scorer, while rookie Ciganda also had a 100% record from three starts. Recari also scored three points out of four while everyone contributed at least half a point.
European Solheim Cup captain Liselotte Neumann admitted she was “excited, proud and happy.” No wonder. Her side had just achieved an historic first away win by a record 18-10 margin and reduced the overall score to 8-5 in the USA’s favour.
After the most memorable three days at Colorado Golf Club, Neumann, who made history when she became the first Swede to win a major at the 1988 US Women’s Open, summed up her emotions.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” she said. “Everybody contributed and the whole team put in a huge effort. I was proud of the youngsters and my Captain’s picks. Everybody played extremely well.”
Germany’s Caroline Masson had extra reason to celebrate. Europe will defend the Cup in her country in 2015 at St. Leon-Rot.
“I will do everything I can to be on the team again in two years time,” said the rookie who contributed 2 ½ points. “I hope we can retain the Cup in Germany.”
Neumann acknowledged that the 4-0 whitewash in the Saturday afternoon fourballs was the key to success – but she also had to keep the team’s feet firmly on the ground on the eve of the 12 singles – Europe needed 3 ½ points on the final day to retain the trophy.
“I was in the team in 1996 when we led by four points going into the last day so I knew what could happen,” she said. “We were pretty calm and I just told them that they had to focus on every match and put pressure on the US team.”
For USA Captain Meg Mallon it was a tough outcome. “But my players kept fighting to the end,” she said. “But the Europeans played better and putted better. But I knew before the start that a young team with nothing to lose would be really dangerous.”
And so it proved.

KATIE WINS ST. NICHOLAS TROPHY

Katie McGarva (Troon Ladies) playing off 6 was the winner of the St. Nicholas Trophy played today over Loudoun Gowf Course yesterday. Conditions were difficult with a strong wind and also some very difficult pin positions due to an Ayrshire match taking place and also the Junior Club Championship.
Katie's nett 78 just pipped both Connie Jaffrey and Rachel Irvine who were on 79.
The bronze winner was Bethan Muir who off 36 had a nett 85 followed by Ali Roy, 24 handicap who was 89.
Connie won the Daily Telegraph scratch prize with a 78.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S CONNIE JAFFREY LOSES IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE BRITISH GIRLS MATCHPLAY

Scotland's three qualifiers for the match-play stages of the British girls open amateur golf championship at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes were all beaten in the first round today (Wednesday).
Tara Mactaggart (Minto) was seven down at the turn on her way to an 8 and 6 defeat by the top seed, Bethan Popel (Long Ashton) - who was beaten at the 19th by an Italian in the second round. Scottish U18 girls champion Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) had a much closer match. She was all square at the turn against Clara Aveling (Belgium) before losing by 2 and 1.
Monifieth's Heather Munro, the 63rd qualifier, looked to be on her way to the major upset of the first round when she was four up at the turn on the No 2 seed, Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall). But Morris found her game on the inward half to square the match at the 14th and take the lead at thr 15th, for the first time since the first hole. "Heather played really well and it was a much tougher game than I expected. I had to really get the head down after the turn and start winning holes," said Morris who won by 2 and 1.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S CONNIE JEFFREY MAKES IT THROUGH TO THE BRITISH GIRLS' MATCHPLAY STAGES

Three Scots - Under-18s champion Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), Tara Mactaggart (Minto) and Heather Munro (Monifieth) - are through to the match-play stages of the British girls golf championship at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes in Lancashire.
They made it by the skin of their teeth. All three were on the limit mark of 159 after the 36-hole stroke-play eliminator.
Connie Jaffrey added a 76 to her first-day 83 while Mactaggart and Munro both added 82s to first round 77s.
Mactaggart's "reward" is a first-round tie against the leading qualifier, Bethan Popel from Brimstol. She shot 72 and 73 for three-under 145 over the par-74 layout.
Jaffrey plays Clara Aveling (Belgium), a top 10 qualifier with 78 and 73 for 151.
Munro plays the No 2 seed Rochelle Morris from Huddersfield. She was at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day with 70 and 76 for 146 until Popel came in late to take the pole position.

The Patterson Cup at Kilmacolm GC for the best girls handicap score was won by Alison Macnab ( daughter of Jan Macnab ) with a best nett score of 53 with an eagle on the 14th.

WEST OF SCOTLAND' S CONNIE JAFFREY IS TOP SCOT AND WALES BEAT SCOTLAND ON DAY 3

Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), highlighted the morning foursomes play on the last day of the Girls Home Internationals at St Annes Old Links, Lancashire by achieving a hole in one with a nine iron at the 140yd third hole.
It was Lauren's second competitive ace. Her first one was at Dunfermline in the Scottish U21 girls strokeplay of 2011
Lauren and her partner, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), her predecessor as Scottish U18 girls champion, won their foursomes tie by 4 and 3 against Chloe Williams and Ella Griffiths of Wales.
The foursomes ended at 1 1/2-1 1/2pt apiece in both Scotland v Wales and also the England v Ireland match.
Wales went on to beat Scotland 5-4, by taking the singles 3 1/2-2 1/2. Scotland's singles winners were national champion Connie Jaffrey, who won by 5 and 3 against Bethan Morris, and Heather Munro (Monifieth), a 5 and 3 winner over Georgia Lewis.
Lauren Whyte had a square match in the top singles against full Wales cap Chloe Williams
Connie Jaffrey was the tournaments MVP - the top performer of the four squads with 5pt out of six. Whyte and Irish left hander Mary Doyle had the joint second best individual points totals of 4 1/2 each.
England's best was Annabel Dimmock with 3 1/2pt.
England won the tournament's Stroyan Cup for the sixth year in a row despite losing their last match 5-4 to Ireland.
With Scotland's defeat, England could afford to lose to Ireland and still take the title with their 2pt from the first day's play.
Ireland and Wales both finished with 1 1/2pt each. On a count back of individual games won, Ireland had the edge (13 1/2 to 11 1/2) and that won them the Swansea Spoon as runners-up.
Scotland finished last with 1pt.

SCOTLAND LOSE OUT TO ENGLAND ON DAY 2 OF THE GIRLS' HOME INTERNATIONALS

Scotland led England by 2 points going into the afteroon singles but it was not enough to stop the Stroyan Cup holders' march towards a sixth successive capture of the Girls Home International Matches title at St Annes Old Links Golf Club, a mile or two south of Blackpool.
The English, with so many good players in their line-up, took the singles 5-1 for an overall 5 1/2-3 1/2 win over the Scots for whom their 2013 champion, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) was the only afternoon winner
She beat Junior Vagliano Trophy team player Sophie Madden by 5 and 4 after being three up at the turn.
The writing was on the wall for Scotland halfway through the afternoon action on another gorgous summer's day in Lancashire.
It boiled down to a 3 1/2-3 1/2 scoreline with two matches to finish in which Scotland's Clara Young improved to be two up with six to play while Fiona Liddell was one down at the same point.
Young bogeyed the 13th and 15th, lost the 16th to a birdie and then bogeyed the 17th to lose by 2 ad 1 to Olivia Winning, the Rotherham girl who won the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke-play title at Troon in April.
Liddell lost by a similar margin to Sophie Madden, a GB and I junior international, who won the 13th and 16th when the crunch came.
Scotland skipper Laura Walker has not given up hope yet.
"Ireland could yet do us a good turn by beating England on the last day while we have to beat Wales," she said.
"But the hardest job is raising our team spirit again. Chins up will be my order of the day. We have to bounce back and show what we are made of. The core of next year's Scotland girls team is here and they have to learn to cope with results like this."

Scotland, hard-working 5-4 winners over Ireland, and England, very impressive 7-2 conquerors of Wales, meet on Day 2 of the Girls Home Internationals at very sunny St Annes Old Links, just south of Blackpool today (Wednesday)
England are bidding for a sixth straight Stroyan Cup triumph and they have a team studded with Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophy team players not to mention Olivia Winning who did not make the GB and I teams even though she won the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke-play at Troon in April.
But Scotland skipper Laura Walker says her team are not going into the crunch match against the Auld Enemy with any feelings of inferiority
"England are a very good team. No question about that. But, hey, Scotland are a very good team as well. I was so proud of the way they pulled through in the later singles when Ireland started to put a bit of pressure on them.
"Lesley Atkins, Fiona Liddell and Lauren Whyte all holed great putts over the closing holes," said Walker.
"This win over Ireland has really lifted the Scottish girls. It should be a great match against England."
Wales fought well in the foursome against England, losing only one of them and halving the other two to trail 1-2, going into the six singles.
But in the one-on-one match-play England's Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophy team players, Gabriella Cowley, Sophie Lamb, Sammy Fiuller, Alice Hewson as well as Helen Holm Scottish stroke-play winner Olivia Winning and England schools Sophie Keech, plus the talented Annabel Dimmock, added up to an irresistible force as far as the plucky Welsh were concerned.
A 5-1 singles count in favour of England for a 7-2 overall opening-day win was just about right.
In perfect warm, sunny conditions for low scoring, with only a faint breeze, the England players played a lot of sub-par golf and were just too good for the Welsh. No disgrace in that.
Scotland's 5-4 win over the Irish was not so polished as that of the English but if you need true grit to play winning match-play golf at international level, then Laura Walker's team of eight have got it.
The Scots came out of the morning foursomes with a 2-1 lead thanks to a one-hole win by Lauren Whyte and Connie Jaffrey in the top foursomes. That win was to prove vital in final analysis because the singles were shared 3-3.

They were 2-1 down after the morning foursomes but won five of their six singles in the afternoon. It all depended on the last match. Lanarkshire winning against Ayrshire.

So history was made at the Home of Golf. It was not quite of the monumental variety, as Inbee Park was not able to win a fourth consecutive major.
But to win an Open at St Andrews is always special and means the champion is a part of history. World No 2 Stacy Lewis won the Ricoh Women’s British Open with two magnificent birdies at the final two holes and will go down as one of the great Old Course specialists.
In the 2008 Curtis Cup, the American won all five of her matches and now in her first Open on these ancient links she came from three behind with two to play to claim a two-stroke victory.
This was a girl who grew up in Texas wearing a back brace for seven and a half years and then at the age of 18 had a steel rod inserted in her back to overcome scoliosis. To return to the game she loved was something of a miracle. To be piped off the Old Course holding the Open trophy on a sunny Sunday evening was a fairy tale.
“It’s unbelievable,” Lewis said. “I love this golf course. I love the history and it is amazing to think of all the great champions who have won here. Of all the links courses I’ve played, I think good shots get rewarded here. I played it 11 times during Curtis Cup week and this year we had a great gameplan for playing it in all the different winds. I felt so comfortable out there but after the seventh the wind was brutal. I never thought birdieing the last two holes would be possible.”
In the winds of the last three days, few else felt anything like at ease. On a day of two rounds due to the suspension of the third round early on Saturday, Lewis first compiled a 69, which included two late bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes. Only Catriona Matthew had scored better, a 68 helped by a birdie at the 17th and an eagle at the last when she holed a lob wedge from 67 yards.
Lewis entered the final round one behind Morgan Pressel. Of the last 42 players on the course in the afternoon, when the wind got up again, Lewis was the only player to match par. No one bettered it. Pressel closed with a 76 to share fourth place with Suzann Pettersen, who had a 74. Second place went to 36-hole leader Na Yeon Choi, who had rounds of 75 and 73 on Sunday, and HeeYoungPark, who closed with a 73. Matthew’s hopes of a second Open title went with a triple bogey at the fifth hole.
At some points in the final round, at least four players shared the lead. But when Pressel four-putted at the 12th and Choi holed a long putt at the 10th, the Korean was three ahead. Lewis was still three behind when she bogeyed the 15th, her third dropped shot in five holes although she also birdied the 14th.
After a par at the 16th, Lewis hit a five-iron at the notorious 17th to two feet. “One of the best shots of my career,” Lewis said. “It was a shot you see in your mind but then you pull it off exactly as you wanted. It was a low-five, hoping it would turn on the wind and land at the front of the green and roll up. If it had landed on top it would have run over the back. The wind knocked it down and where it landed was perfect.”
Lewis added: “I thought seven under might get in a playoff but after I made a birdie there, I was going for one more birdie at the last.” It came with a putt from just inside 30 feet and left her at eight under. Choi, who was spilling shots coming home, finished at six under alongside Park, who had been playing with Lewis.
“It all happened so fast at the end,” Lewis said. “You are fighting for every shot and then you make two birdies and it is all over. I was hanging in their all day. My patience is what won it for me today.

The Regional Medal Finals West Division was held at Cathkin Braes on Friday, August 2. Windy but dry conditions made it difficult to score for a number of the field but it didn't stop Emily Dunsmore (Bishopbriggs) who had the score of the day with a nett 72.

PAMELA FINISHES AS THE TOP SCOT IN THE HANDA LADIES EUROPEAN MASTERS

Pamela Pretswell finished the top Scot in the Handa Ladies European Masters. The Hamilton-based player shot rounds of 68, 69 and 73 for a six-under-par total of 210, 10 shots behind the winner, Aussie Karrie Webb (68-67-65) at Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Denham.
Pamela earned 6,360 Euros.
Kylie Walker slumped out of the top 10 with an inward half of 42 in a closing 77 for a total of 212 and joint 21st place. Earlier rounds of 67 and 68 had her well up the leaderboard and she birdied three of the first six holes in her last round.
But the Carrick at Loch Lomond player had four bogeys and a double bogey at the 17th in her nightmare inward half. She earned 4,740 Euros.
Vikki Laing also did not play as well in her third round as she had done for 70-71 over the first two rounds. The Musselburgh player completed her campaign with a 75 (37-38) for a share of 50th place on level par 216, which earned her 1,760 Euros.

CARLY FINDS FORM BUT TOO LATE TO BEAT THE BUCKS CUT

Comrie's Carly Booth shot one of the lowest rounds of the day - a four-under-par 68 - but missed the cut by one after 36 holes of the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Denham today.
Carly had two double bogeys in her first-round 77 and she could not quite make up the leeway.
To make the last round she had to reach level par 144 or better.
An eagle 3 at the ninth and birdies at the short fifth, 11th, 13th and long 14th gave her a fighting chance but a double bogey 6 at the 16th was the knock-out blow.
Even though Majorca-based Carly birdied the 17 for two-under 34 home, it was too little too late. A brave effort, nevertheless.
Three Scots are in the final round at - West of Scotland's Kyle Walker is on joint seventh on135, Pamela Pretswell, a 69 for 137 and a share of 14th place, and Vikki Laing, a 71 for 141 and joint 34th place among the qualifiers.

Kylie had five birdies and one bogey. One of her birdies came at the 17th, a hole which cost Pamela Pretswell a double bogey 6 to take the shine off a round which had earlier included six birdies.

Laing had four birdies in her 71 but three bogeys as well.
There's a three-way tie for the lead at 12-under-par 132. Caroline Masson (Germany) has had scores of 63 and 69, South African Ashleigh Simon, also 63-69, and Czech Republic youngster Klara Spilkova has had a pair of 66s.

KYLIE AND PAMELA HAVE A GOOD START IN THE ISPS HANDA EUROPEAN MASTERS

Kylie Walker is lying T6 after a 67, had her best start to an LET event for some time. Pamela Pretswell and Vikki Laing back her up with rounds of 68 and 70 respectively for a share of 11th and 27th places respectively. Only Carly Booth is in danger of missing the cut. She had a 77.
Kylie stood on the 16th tee needing three pars for a 65 but she dropped a shot at the 16th and another at the short 18th.
Earlier she had an eagle 3 at the long second and birdies at the first, long 10th, 11th, long 14th and 15th in halves of 33-34/
Pamela Pretswell also had an eagle 3 at the long second, backed up by birdies at the first, long 10th, 11th and 15th. She dropped shots at the fourth and 17th in halves of 34.
Vikki Laing was a third Scot to get an eagle but hers came at the ninth to see her out in 34 after a birdie at the long second and a bogey at the eighth.
The Musselburgh player dropped shots at the 11th and 16th but birdied the short 12th and long 14th in halves of 34-36.

JESS MEEK WINS SCOTTISH UNDER-21 GIRLS' STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

No surprise to followers of the Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open Tour that Jess Meek, the 19-year-old Carnoustie Ladies player, has won the Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke play championship at Inverness Golf Club.
Jess's form on the tour, in which she repeatedly finished ahead of lady pros and at one time headed them all in the tour's Order of Merit, was a signpost that she was going to win something big this season.
And it came today in the Highland Capital, where Jess started the final round level with Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), both of them one shot back of the long-time leader Eilidh Briggs.
Jess, as she has the knack of doing, rose to the occasion, responded to the presure and a birdie at the very last hole for a one-under-par 73 gave her a winning total of five-under-par 214.
Briggs and Watton finished two shots back in joint second place.
Both runners-up will be licking their wounds on the way home.
Eilidh birdied the 17th but bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 18th for 39 home (compared with 36 by Meek) and a 75.
Denver University student Watton had two 6s over the last five holes - a bogey at the long 14th and a double bogey at the 17th. She too came home in 39 buit for a 74 and 216.
So was Meek a lucky winner? Not a bit of it. She did what she had to do.
Jess (she prefers that to Jessica) Meek heads for the University of Missouri on August 5 and she couldn’t have asked for a better parting gift.
“This is definitely my best win so far,” said the 19-year-old. “I don’t really know what I was thinking coming down the 18th apart from try and hit the fairway and then the green.”
The Angus teenager had led the strokeplay qualifying at the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Longniddry in May, but then suffered a disappointing second round defeat.
“It was very disappointing at the time but I think I learned from that experience,” she said. “This week, I tried not to push too hard to make birdies.”
Now she’s looking forward to a new stage of her life as a US scholarship student. If she continues to improve at the rate she has done in first half of the 2013 season, Meek mght almost inherit the golfing earth!

Jessica Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) birdied the final hole for a one under par 72 and claimed the biggest title of her career at the Scottish Junior Ladies’ Open Strokeplay Championship at Inverness Golf Club.
In a dramatic finale, Meek and Eilidh Briggs (KIlmacolm), who had led by one after both round one and round two, were tied standing on the 17th tee on a final day that included a 90-minute thunderstorm delay.
Both hit good drives, but while Briggs pulled her second shot Meek made it onto the green in two at the 455-yard hole. Her first putt from 50-feet stopped a tantalising six feet short but she made the tester to secure victory on five under par.
Briggs three-putted the 18th for a 75 to finish on three under and in a tie for second place with Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), who had been two ahead with six to play but bogeyed the 14th and made a double-bogey after tree trouble at the 17th. The University of Denver golfer closed with a 74.

WEST OF SCOTLAND'S EILIDH AND CONNIE STILL AT THE TOP

It looks a three-horse race with one round to go in the Scottish Under-21 girls' open amateur stroke-play championship at Inverness Golf Club tomorrow.
Play was suspended for a spell early in the afternoon because of flooding but at the end of a long day, the three leading contenders were Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) in the pole position on 141, a shot ahead of Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) and Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies).
Eilidh Briggs should, in fact, have had a bigger lead. She ran up a double bogey 7 at the long 18th, a hole she birdied in her opening round of 67. Earlier in her second-round 74 (35-39) she had six birdies but five bogeys.
If the 20-year-old physical education student can eliminate the negative, the past Scottish Under-18s match-play champion is still favourite to add another national title to her collection.
US college circuit player Watton improved by eight shots, from 75 to 67, coming home in 32. Five of her impressive bag of eight birdies came over the last nine.
Jess Meek, who has been matching up well against the professionals on the Paul Lawrie Tour, is not doing too badly either against her amateur peers.
She did slip from an opening 68 to a 74 after losing her momentum with a double bogey 6 at the sixth.
New Scottish Under-18 girls champion Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) looks just that little too far back in fourth place. She had a 74 for 146, five shots behind leader Briggs.
Scottish women's champion Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) has closed the gap between her and the pacemaker to 10 shots but it would surely take an act of Alex Salmond's parliament to see her take the Under-21 title the same year as she was national women's champion - as Kelsey MacDonald (who won the "junior" title three years in a row) in 2010

KILMACOLM'S EILIDH BRIGGS SHOOTS A 6 UNDER PAR IN THE 1ST ROUND OF THE SCOTTISH JUNIOR OPEN STROKEPLAY

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm),  set a hot pace with a six under par 67 in the first round of the Scottish Ladies' Junior Open Stroke Play Championship at Inverness Golf Club.

 The 20-year-old Scottish internationalist was four under par after six holes in the sunny conditions and went on to finish one stroke ahead of Carnoustie's Jessica Meek. 

Rachel Polson (Peterculter), a semi-finalist at the Scottish Ladies' Amateur Championship at Longniddry in May, was in third place on three under par 70 with Connie Jaffrey (The Ladies Golf Club Troon) on 72.

Connie Jaffrey won the 2013 Scottish Girls' Championship at Ranfurly Castle on Saturday - she continued her run of form with the one under par score on the first day of the 54-hole Championship.

Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), the Scottish Ladies' Champion, opened her bid for a double with a 77 while defending champion Nicola Callander (Mill Green) had an 83.

Congratulations go to Ayrshire's Connie Jaffrey who won the Scottish Under 18's Matchplay Championship yesterday over Ranfurly Castle. The golf was just fantastic with Connie being 4 under par when she won against Tara Mactaggart from Minto.

Connie Jaffrey, 16-year-old Troon Ladies junior member, this morning added the Scottish Under-18 girls' championship to the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schoolgirls and Ayrshire women's county titles she won earlier in the season.
Just back from playing for Scotland in the previous week's European girls team championship in Sweden, Connie beat Tara Mactaggart (Minto), the 17-year-old South of Scotland girls champion, by 4 and 3 in the final at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club.
In one of the most polished performances in an Under-18s' final for some time, Jaffrey had six birdies and was roughly four under par for the 15 holes played.
The Troon teenager bogeyed the first but birdied both the second and third and made it three wins in a row with a par at the fourth hole. Another birdie, at the sixth, put Jaffrey firmly in the driving seat with a four-hole advantage.
The eighth was halved in birdie 4s, Mactaggart's only sub-par figure in the round.
Three up at the turn, Jaffrey bogeyed the 10th but regained a three-hole lead with a birdie - her fifth, all of them at par-5 holes - at the 11th and clinched her title with a sixth birdie at the par-4 15th.
It was Mactaggart's misfortune to run into an opponent playing so well in the final. The Borders girl was only one over par for the first 14 holes before having a double bogey 6 at the 15th, a standard of scoring that would have won many of the previous finals.

Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) is the 2013Scottish Under-18 girls' champion following a 4 and 3 victory over Tara Mactaggart (Minto) in the sun-drenched final at Ranfurly Castle.
The 16-year-old was an impressive four under par for the 15 holes – she was three under and three up at the turn.
“Winning this Championship was my goal at the start of the season and I’m absolutely delighted,” said the Kilwinning Academy pupil who had already bagged the Ayrshire Ladies’ County title and the Scottish Schools’ Championship this season. “Today was certainly one of my best ever rounds of golf.”
Jaffrey took up golf at the age of five. “I was going to dance classes but didn’t enjoy it so my Dad (David) took me to the driving range and I loved it,” she said. ”I then went to junior coaching at Gailes and have kept progressing.”
Set to return for her sixth and final year at school, Jaffrey is hoping to go to the US on a golf scholarship in August 2014.
Before then, she will still be young enough to defend the Paul Lawrie Foundation title at Dumfries and County next year.
And looking further ahead, Jaffrey has plans to make golf her living. “I would love to become a professional,” she said. “But not until I’m in my twenties.”

Scottish schoolgirls champion Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), also winner of the Ayrshire women's county title this season, will play South of Scotland girls champion Tara Mactaggart (Minto) in the 18-hole final of the Scottish Under-18 girls' championship at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club on Saturday morning.
In this morning's quarter-finals, Jaffrey ended the bid of St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) to become the first player since Carly Booth in 2007-2008 to win the national girls' title two years in a row. Connie, the fifth seed, beat Whyte by 4 and 2 and followed that up with a 5 and 4 win in the semi-finals against Nicola Robertson (Dunblane New) who had earlier KO'd the highly rated Carla Young (North Berwick) and then, in the quarter-finals, the 2010 champion Lesley Atkins (Gullane) by 5 and 4.
Jaffrey was level par in her victory over Robertson after being two up at the turn.
Mactaggart, 17, who reached the last 16 of the Scottish women's championship at Longniddry in May, was one under par in winning the all-Borders semi-final against Danielle Ker (Roxburghe).
Tara was one down after six holes but never looked back after birdieing the short seventh and long eighth to be one up at the turn.
Ker won the 13th and 16th on the inward half but Mactaggart won the 11th, 12th, 15th and 17th for victory.
