Scottish Golf introduce Golf Open Play for Non- Member Golfers

At the 2018 Scottish Golf Conference, Scottish Golf announced their intention to launch an integrated software platform for golf clubs that would create inclusivity and a pathway into membership for all golfers. The principal aims and objectives of their strategy were:

  • To make golf Scotland’s Game for Everyone, ensuring the game is an inclusive and accessible sport for all

  • To finance the game in Scotland with the introduction of new revenue streams to reduce the reliance on external funding and member contributions and ensure that all who consume golf in Scotland make a financial contribution

  • To invest in technology to support member clubs in a way which allows them to embrace modern society through digital means

Since that time they have been researching, developing and testing their approach and are now in a position to provide you with details of their new subscription service OpenPlay which launched today.

OpenPlay is their independent golfer programme, where they have created a monthly digital subscription model for non-member golfers to obtain an official handicap in a way that their extensive research shows will more closely meet their needs and lifestyle.

As you can hear from Martin Gilbert, Chair of Scottish Golf, Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A and Open Champions Paul Lawrie and Catriona Matthew, they all strongly believe that OpenPlay will reach out to the estimated 500,000 golfers in Scotland, who are not members of a club, to create inclusivity and a pathway into membership

A final  footnote to one of your webmaster's memories was :
In 2003 all clubs in Renfrewshire were represented at a meeting to hear more details of the CONGU system that is proposed to be introduced in February 2004. Nancy Chisholm from the SLGA with her "handicap hat on" as the West of Scotland no longer has a Handicap Advisor, reported exceedingly well on the many decisions that have been made. She also gave some advice for the handicap secretaries and their committees. However, the CONGU system is still to be ratified in Scotland at the SLGA AGM in Perth on Wednesday 26th November. -- CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
Now in 2021 -- We are going through it all again with the new WHS handicap system  -- I AM SURE YOU ARE GLAD TO BE OUT OF THIS ONE !!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Shaeen Ahmad, Tricia Chillas and Shona Cunningham leading qualifiers at Murrayshall

Shaeen Ahmad produced a grandstand finish to clinch a narrow victory in the women’s event at the Scottish Medal Finals Central 1 event at a wet Murrayshall Country House Hotel & Golf Club in Perthshire on Sunday 23rd May 2021

The 18-handicapper from Balmore Golf Club was level par when she stepped onto the tee at the 127-yard par-3 18th hole but holed out in two for a net one and a two under par net round of 69.

On a day marred by increasingly inclement weather that was enough to give Ahmad a single shot win over Tricia Chillas (Stirling) and Shona Cunningham (Mortonhall).

All three players qualify for the Scottish Medal Finals Grand Final at The Duke’s, St Andrews, where they will be joined by Janette Bowman (Auchterarder), Carolyn Smith (Dunblane New) and Kathy McIlwaine who shared fourth place with two over par net rounds of 73.

Williamwood's Sara McCorkell wins the Scottish Medal Finals (West Division)

Sara McCorkell

There was a home success in the West Division - Scottish Medal Finals with former Renfrewshire County Team member and former Williamwood Women’s Club Champion Sara McCorkell and carding a net two-over 74 to finish a single shot ahead of Shirley Dalrymple (Hayston) and Ruth Hunter (Lanark).

Laura McGeachy (Haggs Castle), Roisin Black (Gleddoch Resorts Ltd) and Susan Halley (Strathaven) also qualified for the Grand Final after carding net scores four over par 76 but there was disappointment for Patricia Crook (Southerness), Jane Richardson (Kirkcudbright), Joan Walker (Balfron Golf Society) and another Williamwood member Gillian McLeod who lost out in a card countback on the same score.

“It’s great to get to the Grand Final because I was at St Andrews University years ago but never got the chance to play the Duke’s course,” a delighted McCorkell said.

“I was first out in the morning and when I finished I thought I’d probably miss out by a couple of shots so it was a bit of a surprise to find out I’d won.

“There’s no doubt local knowledge helped a bit,” she added. “I holed a tricky birdie putt from about eight feet on the 13th but then went through a bit of an iffy patch before finishing with two pars.

“I’m looking forward to the Grand Final already.”

The Scottish Medal Finals West was the second of six Regional Finals with six men and six women at each event qualifying for the Grand Final at The Duke’s, St Andrews, in August.
